Editorial Review:

Matthew Currier Burden founded www.blackfive.net, one of the most popular military blogs on the Internet. His blog began as an homage to a friend killed on duty in Iraq and quickly became a source of information about what was really happening in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In The Blog of War Burden presents selections from some of the best of the military blogs, the purest account of the many voices of this war. This is the first real-time history of a war, a history written even as the war continues. It offers a glimpse into the full range of military experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, from the decision to enlist right through to homecoming. There are powerful stories of soldiers in combat, touching reflections on helping local victims of terror and war, pulse-racing accounts of med-evac units and hospitals, and heartbreaking chronicles of spouses who must cope when a loved one has paid the ultimate price. The Blog of War provides an uncensored, intimate, and authentic version of life in the war zone. Dozens of voices come together in a wartime choir that conveys better than any second-hand account possibly can what it is like to serve on the front lines.

Exactly what I was looking for! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I run a small local business, and in that business I sell flowers, as well as other items. My main business is flowers. We cover Prom's, Wedding's, Holiday's, and more.

I'm taking a small business class right now, and the teacher recommends having a blog, and he also recommends using wordpress (I currently have a regular webpage I paid about 500 dollars to get made and has 5 pages).

I know nothing about any of this technical stuff. So I went to amazon and typed in wordpress, and saw there was a dummies book on it and bought it right away.

When the book arrived, I was excited, I read it, and read it, and read it. I got some good ideas, but I was confused with where to start. I think that book is more for the technical crowd than any other kind of book. I kept getting confused, I didn't know what to do or where to go. I also didn't understand half of what was being said (but again I'm not a tech person, I'm a flower person).

After going through most of the book, I still did not have my blog online. I was going to pay someone to set up a blog for me and let me work on it from there when someone recommended this book to me.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to get it. The huge dummies book was to much for me, but the price was pretty low so I grabbed it.

To my surprise, this book was exactly what I needed. The book is basically a step by step book. It starts out with coming up with a name, then signing up with wordpress, or installing it yourself, and walks you through the whole process. It also shows how to fight spam, and how to keep your blog up to date.

It covers adding pictures, movies, how to format the text and more.

I have never built a website before. The website I had I never updated (didn't know how), this book explained it to me very plainly.

I'm very glad I got this book, if this book didn't work I was going to just pay someone to do this for me, and have them update it once a week. I'm glad that is no longer a problem for me.

I also bought another book called ProBlogger. It teaches you how to make money with your blog, and I'm sure that will help me greatly in the future.

Once I get used to blogging and wordpress, I'm sure the other book can help me, but right now I just cannot use it, and this little book is a lifesaver.

My favorite part about this book was, it did not slow me down with stuff I didn't need to know. This book will not make you a wordpress master, but it will help you get your blog up and online right away. (That's what counts right?)

This version also covers the new version, the other books showed older versions of the platform which also made things confusing.

I'm just so glad I finally have this done, I can be online and design my own website. It's so cool and empowering. I already got some posters printed out, and I cant wait to start showing off my new blog! I'm a blogger now! Yes!

My Little Lifesaver 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I actually bought the 2.7 book which covers the new one, but that book has been a life saver for me. I was tired of reading articles online, trying to go through the help file, and I bought a few other blogging books, but none of them actually showed me how to get my blog up and online.

This book did that for me, and for that I will be eternally grateful.

The book is not full of stuff I do not need (this means it is not a reference book), I think the whole point of the book is to get you online, and used to using the wordpress interface. It does this greatly!

I actually have pages highlighted, pages turned over, and I reference it most every time I start to write a new post (which is very fun!)

The other reviewer here mentions that the book is full of grammar issues (I did not notice any in my 2.7 book, but then again, I'm not a grammar nut)

Also, The books I bought to learn how to blog were all published very recently, and most all of them showed different pictures of the same thing. I think this platform must change rapidly, and I think its hard for the authors to keep up.

I bought the dummies book and it uses a very old version, and it is night and day compared to the new 2.7 interface (which the new book by Jason covers). I think this is just something we all have to deal with.

I was confused when reading the older books and trying to apply them to my blog. I was wanting to give up, nothing was the same.

Luckily I found this wonderful gem and got online and blogging right away.

I recommend buying this book (well the new version) and I also recommend checking out ProBlogger, which will teach you some nifty ideas on how to start making money with your blog.

If you want a reference guide to wordpress, this is not your book. If you want to get online, and you have never been online before, you will not be happier.

Blog is short for Weblog. A Weblog is a journal (or type of newsletter) that is updated often and intended for the general public. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or the Web site owner. In July 2006, the Pew Internet & American Life Project estimated that the U.S. "blog population has grown to about 12 million Americans," some 8% of U.S. Internet users. The number of U.S. blog readers was estimated at 57 million (39% of the U.S. online population). If you have a product, service, brand, or cause that you want to market inexpensively online to the world, you need to look into starting a blog. It is an ideal marketing vehicle. You can use it to share your expertise, grow market share, spread your message, and establish yourself as an expert in your field for virtually no cost. A blog helps your site to rank higher in the search engines because Google and other search engines provide references to blogs and their content. Tiny one-person part-time businesses and mega companies like Microsoft, Apple, Nike, General Motors, Amazon.com, and Yahoo! use blogs as well as. Most Fortune 1000 firms are using responsible blog marketing as well as advertising on blogs for one simple reason: it works! It generates profits immediately and consistently! In addition, many blogs earn additional revenue by selling advertising space on their niche-targeted blog.

Click Here is told by a 7th grade Web Nerd, Erin Swift. The Book starts when Erin and her best friend Jilly find out that they want be on the same track in the new school (which is middle school.) Erin grows to be more social and meets new people now that Jilly's not around. Erin is faced with a bully, a really cut guy, Mark Sacks, feelings of her own that are hidden inside of on a personal blog, and most of all a horrible situation.

Jilly trys out for the school play and makes Erin try out to, they both make it but Erin wants to do something she likes doing. Erin and her new friends Mark which she likes a lot and Rosa a new best friend all are apart of the school Intranet Club. Ms. Moreno puts Erin as the head of the program only because she has the most experience with computers. The club is to lunch a live internet webpage for all students to view at all times but something happens.

Many things happen between Jilly and Erin, and even a lot of other kids at the school that Erin writes about in her personal blog. Erin learns that life goes on and you meet other people. We all think that if we loses are best friend the world comes to an end, but Erin keeps going.

We all know middle school can be a big drama but we get thought it, fights and argument are resolved and people are forgived. In "Click Here" Erin has it the most but if you read this book you would understand that no matter what your friends are your friends forever. I would say that girls in there middle school ages would like this book the most. "Click Here" is a favorite book this year.

Editorial Review:

Writing with warm, knowing humor, first-time novelist Denise Vega perfectly captures life from a seventh grade girl's point of view.

""A solid... insightful explanation of how the Internet has armed the consumer—which is to say, everyone—against the mindless blather of corporate messaging attempts. Drop everything and read this book.""—The Wall Street Journal

The woman next to you in the coffee shop, typing madly on her laptop, just might be determining the ending to next year's block-buster film or how quickly the hottest new PDAT hits store shelves.  In homes, dorm rooms, waiting rooms, planes and trains around the world, millions of people are exercising enormous influence on what we buy, even though they have no official connection to those products and services.

Who are they?  What motivates them?  Marketing experts Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba explore the ramifications of social media in Citizen Marketers.  As everyday people increasingly create content on behalf of companies, brands or products, they are collaborating with others just like themselves and forming ever-growing communities of enhusiasts and evangelists.  From the rough to the sophisticated, the ""user-generated media"" of blogs, online bulletin boards, podcasts, photos, songs, and animations are influencing companies' customer relationships, product design, and marketing campaigns, whether they participate willingly or not.

Citizen Marketers is the first book to document this phenomenon, examining some of the early winners and losers in this new genre, as well as some of its most noted constituents.  With their exceptional knowledge of brands, products, companies and industries, the citizen marketers are democratizing traditional notions of communication and marketing, even entire business models.

Features:

  • Research on social media
  • Case studies of people and organizations fueling the growth of citizen marketing
  • Clarifies the context and importance of technological and societal shifts that are changing the nature of customer expectations and relationships

Good start for blogging novices willing to use TypePad 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This short book is a very clear and easy read; just about right for blogging novices seeking a quick introduction to the basics. The pages are written in "sound bites" for the busy non-tech professional, in lucid language, with no padding. You get just the facts needed to get your business blog set up, from idea to reality, in a reading that should not take more than one afternoon.

My major beef with the book: the author's single-minded focus on Typepad as a blogging platform. What about Blogger and Word Press? Exactly *half* of this book reads like a how-to manual for TypePad.

Although I understand this is the author's choice and probably the blogging platform he is most comfortable with, nowhere on the jacket blurb is TypePad mentioned. I would like to have known this if I was buying the book! What if I already had the start of a WordPress blog and wanted to know how to develop it? Half this book, short enough already, would be wasted cash for me. I find this a bit disingenuous on the part of the publisher.

I would recommend this book only if the blogger-to-be wanted a step-by-step description of starting a blog from *scratch* on Typepad.

For people already owning a blog, the book is just a bit too remedial. For the price, there are other books for the beginning blogger that should prove more useful and take one beyond the baby steps offered here.

Birding Babylon-Simple Beauty in Wartime 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is a small, beautiful book. The natural phenonomena and bird-life that Jonathan Trouern-Trend desribes with such simple elegance in Birding Babylon is both comforting and poignent as it all takes place in Iraq near the beginning of our most recent conflict there.

I salute Mr. Trouern-Trend, both as a fellow "birder" as well as a poet. His writing is spare and unembelished, yet the warm sentiment he awakens in the naturalist' heart is undeniable. Here, again, poignance was the feeling he inspired, as well as admiration for a job well-done.

I love this little book. I bought 3 more copies as soon as I read it to give to friends.

Thank you, Sergeant Trouern-Trend. I salute you! Beth Hall, San Diego, CA

Editorial Review:

Early in 2004, Sergeant First Class Jonathan Trouern-Trend of the Connecticut National Guard began a year’s deployment in Iraq. He had been a birder from the age of 12, so naturally he looked for birds during his free time on base and on trips “outside the wire.” From nearly day one until he left Iraq, Trouern-Trend wrote about his sightings in an online journal that attracted thousands of readers.
Now some of the highlights of his “Birding Babylon” blog are collected in this small, beautiful volume, designed to resemble a birder’s journal. Cutting through the politics of war like birdsong, it reminds us of our imperishable connection with nature; of how birds and their journeys tie the world together; of the persistence of life even in a wasted land.
