Mental ray Maya,3ds, XSI---Excellent!! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is the book that goes under the hood of the mechanics of mental ray. I learned so much by reading it. The MR features in all three apps are equally explained. The author describes the topics in detail:

Shaders,Shaders and more... (Architectural shaders little explanation)
Final Gathering and Ambient Occlusion
Subsurface Scattering
Indirect Illumination
Textures and projection, and more....
A Bonus chapter on Surface Approximation on CD

I recommend it to all CG artist.

Good- For Beginners 4 out of 5 stars.

This book was useful to me, as a teen filmmaker. I marked many pages with information that I could use, ranging from proper script format, to very useful advice on how to keep your project low budget, which is always a challenge. Unfortunately, having already read books and articles on the subject of filmmaking, as well as having made a few of my own short films, I felt that this book was slightly more geared at the amateur with little to no experience, rather than someone who is more familiar with the art of filmmaking. If however, you have found yourself with an excellent idea for a short film, and have no idea how to realize it, then this book is a highly useful resource that can help anyone deliver a low-budget, high-quality masterpiece.

Editorial Review:

You don't have to invest a small fortune, own expensive gear, and employ an army of technicians to create a movie. Today's high-tech tools will fit in your backpack and don't require the financial backing of a major movie studio, making this the first generation in the history of moviemaking that doesn't have to beg for big bucks to put its stories on the screen. "Digital Filmmaking for Teens" emphasizes Hollywood-style moviemaking, the way the pros do it. You'll learn how to tell your story on a budget, using tips from industry veterans. Not sure where to start? No problem. You'll cover each step-from developing your idea and writing a script to planning for production, shooting, and editing. "Digital Filmmaking for Teens" includes an amazing DVD packed with advice, instructional videos, and examples.

This is a great book.......... 5 out of 5 stars.

I've used a number of these and this one seems to get down to the practical things that you need to know in dealing with recording with Pro Tools. It's been a while since I've recorded so this was sort of like starting over. This book takes you step by step in set up and gives good pictures and illustrations of what you're doing. It comes with some files you can load but it recommends that you create some of your own. I found that to be very helpful. It took me from hooking up any instruments, drum boxes, or whatever to recording something to work with. It made it more "real world" instead of just following a file you've been given.

It's truly a book from a musician to a musician. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get down to recording!!!

* Use the XCode IDE to manage your source code, images, sounds, database files, and other application resources, building your app and deploying it onto your own device for testing.

* Develop your user interface the visual, code-free way, with Interface Builder.

* Master the iPhone's unique user interface components, including tables, tab bars, navigation bars, and the multi-touch interface.

* Connect your iPhone to the outside world with networking, exploit the power of a relational database with SQLite, and rock out with first-class support for audio and video.

In this book, the technical explanation of the nature of analog sound creation is followed by the story of its birth and its subsequent development by various designers, manufacturers and performers.

The individual components of analog sound creation are then examined in detail, with step by step examples of sound creation techniques. Then the modern imitative analog instruments are examined, again with detailed instructions for programming and using them, and the book is completed with appendices listing the major instrument lines available, hints on values and purchasing, other sources of information, and a discography of readily available recordings which give good examples of analog sound synthesis.

The CD which accompanies the book gives many examples of analog sound creation basics as well as more advanced techniques, and of the abilities of the individual instruments associated with classical and with imitative analog sound synthesis.

* A complete history of analog sound in one work
* Interviews with industry Legends and developers of of analog synthesizers
* Audio CD of demo sounds and tuitional pieces to illustrate the processes discussed in the book

A "must have" book for the experienced Logic 8 user. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I placed my order based on the topics covered in the table of contents which was posted at Logic forums. Now having the book in hand only increases my appreciation for the information it contains.

The introduction states that this book fills perceived information voids in the user manual and the two excellent Apple Pro books in response to questions that arise from using Logic in the real world.

What is so impressive is that Jay Asher has carefully targeted the content for experienced users yet the book is written in a clear style that gets right to the point. The following topics were of immediate interest to me. Tutorial #2 addresses how to set up multi-timbral and multi-output software instruments (SI), with #3 continuing on to address converting multi-output SI to audio. Tutorial #19 on gain structure techniques for mixing in the box, which the author describes as being controversial, provides compelling reasons to rethink how to achieve channel levels that will result in more open, better-sounding mixes.

"Going Pro with Logic Pro 8 really does pick up where the other books leave off. In my not-so-humble opinion, Jay Asher's book is a tremendous gift to the community of Logic users.

Editorial Review:

Logic Pro is arguably the number one digital audio workstation among professional musicians and composers, at home in both professional and project studios worldwide. “Going Pro with Logic Pro 8” is an expert level book that addresses the needs of the professional Logic user. The book picks up where the manual leaves off, guiding you from customizing setups of Logic Pro 8 for workflow enhancement, through the recording and editing processes, to preparing final delivery media, dropping power-user tips and tricks throughout the process. Topics covered include building custom mixers; designing templates; organizing your sound palette; dealing with third-party software, applications, and hardware, such as UAD cards and the Akai MPC3000; mixing tips; mastering tips; and much more.
