An excellent training program for Macintosh's Garageband home recording studio for beginners. Easy to follow and use, but quite comprehensive at the same time. I wouldn't expect less from Apple.

Thank You Ms Plummer 5 out of 5 stars.

I did not know what GarageBand was until I explored the icons on my new MAC. Needed help here. Logged on to Amazon.com and found Mary Plummer's book GARAGEBAND 3. I am learning the program by doing the lessons in the book, supplemented with CD lesson files. I am truly excited because it has opened a new world--creating music tracks. Each lesson is a building block, and Ms Plummer's instructions are easy to understand and follow.

Finally a practical book on the craft of editing 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Most other books stop after explaining which buttons to press. This book is intended for people who already know that but want to know how to assemble a scene from the raw footage in a logical way.

There are different chapters for dialogue, action scenes, comedies, documentaries and music videos.

Finally also two chapters on audio, but I haven't read those yet.

Although this book is part of the Apple Pro Training Series and there are many references to Final Cut pro short cut keys, this book can in my opinion also be used with other editing programs.

Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Superbly fitted to a semester-length course, this is the ideal curriculum for a hands-on exploration of advanced editing with Final Cut Pro 6. In this Apple-authorized training book, director and filmmaker Michael Wohl delivers comprehensive training in the real-world skills editing pros use every day in the field. Each chapter presents a complete lesson in some aspect of video editing or finishing in Final Cut Pro 6, with hands-on projects for readers to complete as they go. He shares must-know professional techniques for cutting dialogue scenes, action scenes, fight and chase scenes, documentaries, comedy, music videos, multi-camera projects, and more. Two DVDs of excellent, professional footage and project files give you the chance to work with every genre as you learn.

A serious work 4 out of 5 stars.

Recently I've seen some digital tutorial and books that make me thinking on a precipitated release. Sure this is not the case.

Ignacio.

Just what I needed! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is just an amazing book. I'm still kind of in shock that it even exists. I've been a life long musician, but have never taken the plunge into digital audio. It just seemed like such a big, scary world. Well, it was until I found this book. I don't know how much it would benefit others, but to me, it was a total godsend. I now feel really familiar and comfortable with the entire WORLD of digital audio, not just one program. I now understand plugin formats, virtual instruments, and I also know all sorts of great secrets on where to get them for free, and which freebies are especially awesome. I would have paid triple the price for the knowledge in this book. Thanks to the author for this awesome and needful book.
Speaking of the author, he does a really fine job here. Yes, there are some things I feel were left out, but there's bound to be some stuff missing in a book that undertakes such a massive task, as this one does. Even though I'm not an expert, I feel so much more educated as to why I would want to use Logic vs. Reason vs. Ableton Live vs. Garageband (I've never been interested in Pro Tools, although it's also covered in the book).
Also, to any potential Windows users, this book can also be really beneficial for you as well. You won't have Garageband or Logic, but other than those two chapters (and a little bit of info about customizing the Mac for digital audio production), all this stuff applies to you as well. I'm a recent convert to the Mac platform, and I can use this info on either platform. I also plan on purchasing this book as a gift for some friends of mine on Windows.
This review is just too long, and I apologize. But I'm just so happy with it. Remember that it doesn't get deep. At all. In any regards. But it's just what I needed: a huge, sweeping overview of the entire digital audio world. Thanks again to the author for such a gem!

Editorial Review:

Featuring best practices, real-world examples, and interviews with audio professionals, this book pulls together all the programs and tasks you need.

Editorial Review:

Cakewalk's software synthesizers are some of the most powerful and most widely used in the market. Until now, there hasn't been one comprehensive resource to help users harness the power of all of these amazing tools. Cakewalk Synthesizers: From Presets to Power User will show you how to operate and get the best results from Cakewalk's complete range of synths, from those that are bundled with Cakewalk's main products (including SONAR, Project5, and Kinetic), to the rgc:audio synthesizers (such as Z3TA+), to Cakewalk's newest synthesizers, including Dimension Pro and Rapture. The book begins by diving into the general theories about synthesis and creating sounds with the featured synthesizers. From there, the chapters focus on each distinct synthesizer, its range of uses, the tools that are available with it, and how to set it up for day-to-day use. In addition to looking at all of the different synthesizers and how to use them in your productions, the book also discusses filters, envelopes, effects, the sfz format, how to make sounds and create patches, and much, much more. Also included with the book is an interview with the creator of many of the synthesizers, as well as sound design master classes from several leading synthesizer programmers. Chances are, you won't have every synthesizer covered in this book. That's okay, because this book has something for everyone, whether you own all the synths covered or you only use the ones that come with your host program. It's also useful if you just want to learn about synthesis. Simply put, this is the ultimate guide to learning about synthesizer programming and to understanding and using all of Cakewalk's synthesizers!

Insight into the Apple Faithful 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Do you think that you love Apple and are passionate about their products? This book is all about the passion and the ways in which people show their devotion. You might dye your hair one week a year, or have a logo cut into it, but those efforts quickly return to "normal." This book details arguably the largest subculture in computing: The Mac Faithful. Where an Apple logo tattoo is not unusual.

Contents:
Part 1: Macintosh Madness. Techno Fetishism, Macs and the Counterculture, Worshipping the Two Steves, Mac Tattoos and Haircuts, Macspotting, Mac Evangelism, The Mac Web.
Part 2: Gatherings of the Clan. Tales of MacWorld, Macs in Japan.
Part 3: Incessant Tinkerers. Macquariums, Fantasy Macs, Hardware Mods, Paper Macs.
Part 4: Hoarders and Recyclers. Mac Collectors and Collectibles, Antique Macs.
Part 5: New Frontier. iPod, What Makes Mac Fans So Loyal?
Index

The Cult of Mac, by Leander Kahney, is an amazing book on an interesting part of the computer world. While you may be put off by the use of the word "cult" in the title, make no mistake, Leander means this is in a loving way. His chapters focus on one aspect concerning "Macheads," from the simple Apple logo sticker, to tattoos, to collecting boxes, to the prevalence of the iPod, and beyond. Each chapter is well written and includes many colorful pictures of the subject matter. As you can tell from the contents, Kahney spends time on many topics, allowing the principals to share their story. Some of the subjects may be hard to rationalize (which is the point, I think), but Kahney allows them to their needed time which only adds to the colorful Mac culture.

I picked this book up specifically to see the extremes of the Mac faithful. Yes, it does deliver those examples but without any editorial comments. Kahney presents these people as they are, and allows the reader to make their own judgements. However, somewhere along the way, I was struck by what this book delivers to the casual Mac user as well as people outside of the Mac culture. Kahney shows how many of these Mac faithful give up their time to sell, without any compensation, Apple products in big box stores, like CompUSA (you can see that some of the information is a little dated). But think about that - would anyone do the same for a Windows machine? Or any other personal computer? The chapter on Hardware Mods is one of my favorite. Kahney presents people that turn their Macs into gorgeous works of art. Or creating a Mac product where none exists (like a Mac-based Web pad fashioned out of a touch screen iBook). I could continue to expound on this book, as there are many reasons that I like it. Suffice it to say that this is an excellent book.

If you have one of the Mac faithful in your midst, this would make an excellent gift. If you don't use a Mac or if you can't understand why people fuss over the Apple brand, this book will provide you with many of the answers. You will not get a history of Apple from this book, but you will get a fascinating look into the Apple faithful.

Editorial Review:

No product on the planet enjoys the devotion of a Macintosh computer. Famously dedicated to their machines, many Mac fans eat, sleep and breathe Macintosh. In The Cult of Mac, Wired News managing editor Leander Kahney takes an in-depth look at Mac users and their unique, creative, and often very funny culture. From people who get Mac tattoos and haircuts, to those who furnish their apartments out of empty Mac boxes, the book details Mac fandom in all of its forms. This paperback edition includes an all-new chapter about the iPod, updates throughout, and new photos that reflect current Apple technology.

Editorial Review:

Below the level of the musical note lies the realm of microsound, of sound particles lasting less than one-tenth of a second. Recent technological advances allow us to probe and manipulate these pinpoints of sound, dissolving the traditional building blocks of music—notes and their intervals—into a more fluid and supple medium. The sensations of point, pulse (series of points), line (tone), and surface (texture) emerge as particle density increases. Sounds coalesce, evaporate, and mutate into other sounds.

Composers have used theories of microsound in computer music since the 1950s. Distinguished practitioners include Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis. Today, with the increased interest in computer and electronic music, many young composers and software synthesis developers are exploring its advantages. Covering all aspects of composition with sound particles, Microsound offers composition theory, historical accounts, technical overviews, acoustical experiments, descriptions of musical works, and aesthetic reflections. The book is accompanied by an audio CD of examples.

Mostly retread of earlier versions but still good... 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I bought Adobe Premiere for Dummies for version 6.5 and was able to quickly master the basics covered in the book, then within a few months, I upgraded to Premiere Pro. I also purchased the Premiere Pro for Dummies book to get a good primer.
A lot of the "Pro" book is word for word the same as the 6.5 book with the additional features in Premiere Pro covered for good measure. I suppose there is nothing wrong with that since they have many similarities. My only point is that if you have read the previous version of Premiere for dummies, it is not neccessary to rush out and get the Premiere Pro for Dummies.
If you can use one version effectively you will have no problems with the newer versions. Still a good book if you are a newbie though, I would reccomend it!
