Final Cut Pro already outdated or is it? 4 out of 5 stars.

Great hands-on manual but the FCP 6 book just came out. The reality is there aren't enough changes to make this version obsolete. If you still need a manual to work in FCP then this version will get you 99% of the way.

Long time Premiere Pro User 5 out of 5 stars.

I recently upgraded to the Mac Pro System from my PC for my digital editing and I needed the Final Cut Pro System but since I was not familiar with the system I needed a little assistance navigating through the programs so that I can use it effectively. I am so pleased with the purchase of this book. It is so through and even though I have been editing for years it is still useful for me when it comes to navigating and using advanced features of Final Cut Pro. You do not have to be an avid reader to appreciate this book and nor do you have to be a pro to appreciate the book because you can skip through and target your weaknesses because the the book is laid out just that way. A smart buy for the novice to the intermediate.

Editorial Review:

This newly updated guide from Lisa Brenneis, an undisputed master of the digital video medium, provides task-based, step-by-step instructions along with loads of visuals and time-saving tips that will help busy readers quickly find what they need to know about Final Cut Pro. Topics covered include essential editing operations and media-management strategies, transitions and motion effects, filters, rendering options, and more. This must-have reference also addresses features new to version 5: including higher quality effects, RT Extreme with Dynamic RT, closer integration with Apple's other creative tools and more.

Really fun and informative 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought one these guys' other books about the Palm, and was glad to see the same format for an MP3 book. They tell you everything about burning, ripping, players, software, Web radio stations, and even legal stuff about MP3. They do these hilarious point/counterpoint arguements like they did in the Palm book -- very funny, guys! Oh and the reason I bought this book is there's stuff for bands and musicians about getting your stuff distributed on the net and making money from it. Rip the cover off, though, cuz that girl is WEIRD-LOOKING!

Editorial Review:

A hot new release in the extremely popular How to Do Everything series, this friendly, solutions-oriented book is filled with step-by-step details on how to create, download, upload, play--and even remaster--MP3 and digital music files. You'll also get a completely up-to-date survey of peer-to-peer file sharing services like Napster, Aimster, Gnutella, and others, and details on all the latest and best MP3 players, both desktop and portable.

Great book for beginners! 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm currently on chapter 5 and have to say this is a great book if you're just starting out with Pro Tools. Some of the information is pretty basic in the beginning, but it really gives you a good grasp on what's going on. Plus the examples from the book are great practice and learning tools. I'll probably be looking for more of Mr. Hagerman's books when I'm finished with this one.

Editorial Review:

A distinguishing feature of video games is their interactivity, and sound plays an important role in this: a player's actions can trigger dialogue, sound effects, ambient sound, and music. And yet game sound has been neglected in the growing literature on game studies. This book fills that gap, introducing readers to the many complex aspects of game audio, from its development in early games to theoretical discussions of immersion and realism. In Game Sound, Karen Collins draws on a range of sources—including composers, sound designers, voice-over actors and other industry professionals, Internet articles, fan sites, industry conferences, magazines, patent documents, and, of course, the games themselves—to offer a broad overview of the history, theory, and production practice of video game audio.

Game Sound has two underlying themes: how and why games are different from or similar to film or other linear audiovisual media; and technology and the constraints it has placed on the production of game audio. Collins focuses first on the historical development of game audio, from penny arcades through the rise of home games and the recent rapid developments in the industry. She then examines the production process for a contemporary game at a large game company, discussing the roles of composers, sound designers, voice talent, and audio programmers; considers the growing presence of licensed intellectual property (particularly popular music and films) in games; and explores the function of audio in games in theoretical terms. Finally, she discusses the difficulties posed by nonlinearity and interactivity for the composer of game music.

The manual that should have come with the Zune - very basic 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

The Zune Pocket Guide is very well written. But the title tells it all - it is a pocket guide. Simple, basic and to the point. I had anticipated the guide to be pretty basic, with some advanced tips toward the end. I was however disappointed to discover that it is very basic. I'm still reading through it - but there appears to be NOTHING that I couldn't figure out on my own about the Zune. I am technically inclined, but Microsoft products also tend to be fairly user friendly - as in, if you play around enough you can figure it out. (I've probably just opened myself up for a lot of attacks on that comment.) One thing ALL Microsoft products lack though is a decent user manual. Granted, enough play and you can figure their products out. But some people out there are afraid to play, so I really wish MS would spend just a little extra and include manuals that are a little thicker than the 4 page booklets they have been using (and that only include all those safety warnings we all know and don't read). However, The Zune Pocket Guide by Farkas is just that. It IS the manual that MS should have included with the Zunes. Basic, straightforward and simple to follow. Great starting point for anyone who is not a Techno-Geek (have I just shown my age with that comment?). The entire book appears to be the manual written for the Zune that somewhere along the line got rejected before the release date - it even includes a fair amount of publicity for the Zune accessories available at the press time. So far, I've only found 2 useful pieces of information in it - info about the first sync erasing all the preloaded media on your Zune and the difference between basic and detailed online status. I'm only half way through the book, but I don't anticipate learning much more. Check it out from the library if you have figured out most of the Zune workings. Buy it if you are looking for more info before buying a Zune or if you are technically impaired.

Editorial Review:

Here is your essential companion to the Zune player and software. The Zune Pocket Guide steers you through how to

  • Import songs into the Zune software, assemble playlists, and burn CDs.
  • Browse Zune Marketplace to explore musical recommendations and discover and purchase songs.
  • Import and view photos and videos on the Zune player.
  • Accessorize your Zune.
  • Make your Zune even more useful with handy tips and tricks.
  • Use Zune-to-Zune wireless connections to find other Zune folks to share your songs and pictures with.

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.

The Dummies Guides can be a mixed bag, but this one is very clear and informative. I especially liked the chapters on recording one's own MP3 files, something that some of the other books don't cover in as much detail. Great intro, with enough 'meat' to keep you going for quite a little while.

Great Book with Lots of Info! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a comprehensive book encompassing not just the basics of MP3 both other useful information as well. The book is for all levels knowledge; from novice digital music lovers to musicians.

Although the author only briefly describes the theory behind sound and digital sound recording, he does a great job of explaining all the digital audio compression terms and other technical buzzwords such as ripping, encoding, Codecs, MIDI, WAV files, WinAmp as well as other terms. After discussing just what an MP3 is and how to use it, the author shows you how to turn you PC into a MP3 based digital work station.

Going beyond just describing MP3s, the author also shows you how to set up your home stereo system to play MP3s off of the computer or off of a CD that you just made. He also shows you how to play MP3 files off of the web or how to web cast your music play list. The final chapters are for musicians with some excellent real life stories from several musicians. The author even includes brief discussion on how musician can record, mix, master, distribute and promote their work. All in all a good and comprehensive read that is not too technical (it is a "dummies" book).

Editorial Review:

MP3 For Dummies, 2nd Edition covers all the essentials you need to know to find, download, create, share, save, and hear MP3 files. You'll find out about the enhanced features of the new release of MusicMatch Jukebox as well as the newest portable and home stereo MP3 players. This and updated edition also covers the newest features on MP3.com as well as coverage of the "bad boys" of MP3 -- notably the Napster file swapping service. The book's CD includes MP3 players -- MusicMatch Jukebox and WinAmp -- as well as a sampling of free MP3 files to test out.
