• Aspiring game writers and designers must have this complete bible

There are other books about creating video games out there. Sure, they cover the basics. But The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design goes way beyond the basics. The authors, top game designers, focus on creating games that are an involving, emotional experience for the gamer. Topics include integrating story into the game, writing the game script, putting together the game bible, creating the design document, and working on original intellectual property versus working with licenses. Finally, there’s complete information on how to present a visionary new idea to developers and publishers. Got game? Get The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design.

Pearls for sale, only 10 cents each 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My work consists mainly of creating "music videos" (slide shows set to music) that I output at WMV 720p using Photoshop Elements.

My limited use of Premiere is chiefly for the conversion of my WMV 720p slide shows to MPEG 1080i 30 format (MPEG2) either to play from my HDD on my HD monitor and TV, or, I use the MPEG2s to burn Blu-ray DVDs.

Despite the fact that I only skimmed those parts of Grisetti's book that are not currently relevant to my workflow (the chapters on Themes, Effects, Transitons, Titles, The Propeties Panel and Keyframng), I still found PLENTY of "pearls of information" to highlight with my yellow Sharpie.

Specifically, I counted more than 250 yellow highlights on the 161 pages, which works out to less than 10 cents a "pearl" (the book sells for $24.95).

Grisetti's previous "In a Snap" books were task-oriented, while this book is tool-oriented, that is, it covers how to use each of the many tools that are available in Premiere 7.

Now that I have both his task-oriented and his tool-oriented books by my three computers, I feel more capable than ever of "wow-ing" my clients with my music videos.

If you use ANY of the versions of Adobe Premiere Elements, whether 2.0 or 7 or one of the "in-between" versions, I would suggest that you get both this and his previous books. I currently use Premiere 4.0 while I'm waiting for my copy of Premiere 7 to arrive, nevertheless, I found both his older and his newer books to be packed with information that helps me use 4.0 more effectively.

Editorial Review:

Making great movies from your home videos on your personal computer has never been easier, or more fun, thanks to programs like Premiere Elements. Steve Grisetti, host of Adobe's Premiere Elements user-to-user forum and founding member of videomaker support site Muvipix.com, shows you all the tools in the newest version of Adobe's popular video editing software and how to use them to create movies that are as much fun to make as they are to watch. Special features include tips for making most efficient use of the program and your computer's resources and pointers to great tools in some not-so-obvious places.

Excellent. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn FC Pro 6. Without incurring a lot of money and time at a training facility one can learn the essentials of NLE at one's own pace.

You're gonna like this book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I wasn't aware of these books and found them to be a great read -- fast, useful, and a great reference. My first book in the visually style was Mac OS X Leopard. When you drop $2,000 on a computer I think it's worth it to spend a few bucks in books to help you get the most of the operating system. I liked this one so much I bought the Visually Photoshop CS3 book for a quick primer, overview, and reference guide too. Of course, these are not the "Bible" version of a way to learn a program -- those going into mind boggling detail and 20+ hour time commitment. Instead, they go into a right amount of detail for those wanting a broad based idea of the program, peaking your interest enough to then launch into buying the "Bible." Thumbs up on the Visually book series.

Editorial Review:

Do you prefer instructions that show you how instead of telling you why? This book is packed with easy, visual directions and full-color screen shots that show you how to tackle more than 150 tasks with Mac OS X Leopard, including adding applications to the Dock, color-coding files and folders, viewing windows in Exposé, using the QuickTime player, storing files on your iPod, creating your own Web widgets, and more. Succinct explanations walk you through step by step.

It worked for me . . . 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It takes some time to go through the exercises but I'm up and going now editing my own films. A typical guy, I hate reading directions but sometimes it is necessary. What negative feelings I have about this product are due to the fact I hate the necessary learning curve in learning a "substantial" software product. If only the old iMovie HD product had added an extra video track and kept its wonderful characteristics. I would be happy as a clam. It seems to me that FCE is like Photoshop in that one can accomplish the same task in a number of different ways. Learning all these options takes time. No way around it. Also, like photoshop, one can get competent on FCE without using ALL it offers. Anyway, this manual does explain things well although laboriously. As I start editing my own movies I find the manual very helpful when I forget something. I can go back and reread the chapter I need and move on. I have accepted that only time and repetition will make me competent on FCE and that, at some point, I will love this software. But, at this point I need a how to manual to get started. This training product did what it promised and will be near my computer in the near future as I edit my movies and need to refresh my knowledge base.

Editorial Review:

The only Apple-certified guide to Final Cut Express 4, this book delivers the techniques you need to make movie magic with DV, HDV, or AVCHD footage. Each chapter presents a complete lesson in an aspect of video editing and finishing, with hands-on projects to complete as you go. All the files you need are on the included DVD-ROM. You’ll learn how to make effective edits and adjust them precisely; create polished transitions and sophisticated composites; add audio tracks, titles, and speed and motion effects; then color-correct and finish your video for export to DVD or the Web. Whether you’re a student, a devoted amateur who’s serious about digital video, or a professional who needs a comprehensive editing program, you’ll find everything you need to learn Final Cut Express 4 within the pages of this book. DVD-ROM includes lesson and media files for over 20 hours of training.
