Good source of information 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is about the size of a paperback novel (160 pages). The inside pages are in black and white and contain many photos and screenshots to illustrate points. If you have thought about purchasing an Apple TV, then this book would certainly be a handy thing to have on hand. It takes you from explaining what the Apple TV is and what it isn't, to getting it set up and connected and then how to use it.
There is a good Index if you need to hunt for a particular word or phrase.

I do not have an Apple TV and don't plan on buying one anytime soon, but I am interested in what it can do. Who knows? Maybe I will find a reason that I absolutely need one.

Things you can do with an Apple TV include streaming content from your iTunes Library to watch on the television. You can even stream content from a friend's computer to your TV. Obviously, you can show photo slideshows from your computer to the television, and play your own home movies including high-definition content, assuming you have an HDTV also. Actually, you have to have a widescreen HDTV or "enhanced definition" to use Apple TV--that is something I didn't know to begin with.

I didn't see any mention of viewing youtube.com videos through the Apple TV but Apple has said you can do that. This book was published in 2007 but probably just before that news was out.

I am hoping that in the future the Apple TV will let you do a lot more. Currently, I have watched many TV shows online that I missed watching when they were broadcast. It would be great to be able to watch any of those with the Apple TV through my television set while kicked back on the sofa. I could do that if those shows are in the iTunes Store, but then I would have to pay $1.99 for each episode I watch. Of course, I would get to keep them forever, but when it comes to watching TV shows, I usually am satisfied to watch it once.

Editorial Review:

Here is your essential companion to the Apple TV set-top box. The Apple TV Pocket Guide steers you through how to

  • Connect your Apple TV to your television and home network.
  • Rent and buy movies--including HD movies--using Apple TV.
  • Stream content from a friend's computer to your TV.
  • View high-definition content on your HDTV using the Apple TV.
  • Watch movies and TV shows, view photos, and listen to songs and podcasts.
  • Create high-quality movies from DVDs you own to play on the Apple TV.
  • Convert your own home movies for showing on the big screen.
  • Watch YouTube videos.
  • View photos from iPhoto, Flickr, and .Mac Web Galleries.
  • Fix common problems and learn what to do if you can't fix them yourself.

Insight into the Apple Faithful 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Do you think that you love Apple and are passionate about their products? This book is all about the passion and the ways in which people show their devotion. You might dye your hair one week a year, or have a logo cut into it, but those efforts quickly return to "normal." This book details arguably the largest subculture in computing: The Mac Faithful. Where an Apple logo tattoo is not unusual.

Contents:
Part 1: Macintosh Madness. Techno Fetishism, Macs and the Counterculture, Worshipping the Two Steves, Mac Tattoos and Haircuts, Macspotting, Mac Evangelism, The Mac Web.
Part 2: Gatherings of the Clan. Tales of MacWorld, Macs in Japan.
Part 3: Incessant Tinkerers. Macquariums, Fantasy Macs, Hardware Mods, Paper Macs.
Part 4: Hoarders and Recyclers. Mac Collectors and Collectibles, Antique Macs.
Part 5: New Frontier. iPod, What Makes Mac Fans So Loyal?
Index

The Cult of Mac, by Leander Kahney, is an amazing book on an interesting part of the computer world. While you may be put off by the use of the word "cult" in the title, make no mistake, Leander means this is in a loving way. His chapters focus on one aspect concerning "Macheads," from the simple Apple logo sticker, to tattoos, to collecting boxes, to the prevalence of the iPod, and beyond. Each chapter is well written and includes many colorful pictures of the subject matter. As you can tell from the contents, Kahney spends time on many topics, allowing the principals to share their story. Some of the subjects may be hard to rationalize (which is the point, I think), but Kahney allows them to their needed time which only adds to the colorful Mac culture.

I picked this book up specifically to see the extremes of the Mac faithful. Yes, it does deliver those examples but without any editorial comments. Kahney presents these people as they are, and allows the reader to make their own judgements. However, somewhere along the way, I was struck by what this book delivers to the casual Mac user as well as people outside of the Mac culture. Kahney shows how many of these Mac faithful give up their time to sell, without any compensation, Apple products in big box stores, like CompUSA (you can see that some of the information is a little dated). But think about that - would anyone do the same for a Windows machine? Or any other personal computer? The chapter on Hardware Mods is one of my favorite. Kahney presents people that turn their Macs into gorgeous works of art. Or creating a Mac product where none exists (like a Mac-based Web pad fashioned out of a touch screen iBook). I could continue to expound on this book, as there are many reasons that I like it. Suffice it to say that this is an excellent book.

If you have one of the Mac faithful in your midst, this would make an excellent gift. If you don't use a Mac or if you can't understand why people fuss over the Apple brand, this book will provide you with many of the answers. You will not get a history of Apple from this book, but you will get a fascinating look into the Apple faithful.

Editorial Review:

No product on the planet enjoys the devotion of a Macintosh computer. Famously dedicated to their machines, many Mac fans eat, sleep and breathe Macintosh. In The Cult of Mac, Wired News managing editor Leander Kahney takes an in-depth look at Mac users and their unique, creative, and often very funny culture. From people who get Mac tattoos and haircuts, to those who furnish their apartments out of empty Mac boxes, the book details Mac fandom in all of its forms. This paperback edition includes an all-new chapter about the iPod, updates throughout, and new photos that reflect current Apple technology.

Make your iPod more like an iPhone 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

iPod Fully Loaded by Andy Ihnatko

While I'm sure Andy has an iPhone, this excellent book was written when the iPhone was only an apple in Steve's eye, Andy does a great job of helping the average user tweak some extra features from their iPod. Those suffering from iPhone envy will find some solace in Andy's tips. This book is best for techheads who want to impress their friends, families and associates with all the incredibly cool things they can do with their iPod. iPods have evolved into mini PDAs that can do practically anything (it's the inputing that's the challenge!)

The first few chapters of the book were obvious tips that even beginner iPod'ers know and would annoy the intermediate to advanced audience the book is designed to reach. We all know we can copy songs from our CDs to our iPod. Yawn. Another distraction of the book is the annoying quips and too much personal info about Andy. Sorry, Andy, I'll read your blog to find out your opinion about Battlestar Galactica or the Simpsons, but I don't want it in a book about how to use an iPod. No offense, just not interested. Also, Andy played a bit fast and loose with disclosure on the risks of copyrights. It may be his opinion that some things should be legal, but in the murky legal environment today, more warnings of the risks of copying copyrighted materials should have been discussed.

Just like diamond surrounded by unimpressive coal, there are true gems in the book that I was able to immediately put to use. For example. Andy discussed programs for the Mac and PC that allow you to digitize to voice your emails and sync them with your iPod. I definitely downloaded some of his great tools and now I can laugh at those iPhone people because my iPod is almost as impressive. Almost. Also Andy does a great job of explaining how to use Automator in Tiger to get some really amazing features of your iPod working for you such as "listening" to a website. Take that iPhone! The most impressive iPod tricks Andy teaches is converting any text file to audio for listening, or simply easily breaking up the file for transport to the iPod. Many of the tricks don't require software, but use some neat ideas Andy has for existing tools such as taking a screen shot of a subway map and then putting it on your iPod.

As stated earlier, I quickly got annoyed by Andy's personal tips and societal opinions. Not tips on how to use your iPod, but tips on various SciFi TV shows. Again, Yawn. The tips interfered with the flow of the book because they were visual annoyance on the page. I expect those sidebars to give me exceptionally useful information. It's Andy's style as the "42nd most beloved industry personality" I'll give him leeway because he is an industry veteran and promoted the "Macquarium," just like I give my grandfather when he tells me story about the war (which one?)

Pros: Great tips to use your iPod to it's absolute potential. Great cure for iPhone envy.
Cons: Andy's style, which gets in the way of the information and artificially increases the length of the book.

Four out of Five Dogcows

Editorial Review:

Let Mac guru Andy Ihnatko show you how to put everything but the kitchen sink on your iPod—from old LPs, radio programs, television shows, and movies to spreadsheets, presentations, and PC rescue files. You'll quickly discover that music is only a small part of the picture as you learn how to record TV shows for an iPod, record radio broadcasts and automatically convert them into podcasts, convert Web pages into formats that can be read or listened to on an iPod, and even translate Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents for the iPod screen. Whether you're a PC or a Mac user, or have a past, present, or even future iPod, Inhantko advice works perfectly.

Mostly junk 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This book is 1/3 listings of movies and other such irrelevant nonsense.

The editing information may have been relevant several years ago, but is now completely and totally dated.

Certainly readable, but completely vapid.

Take your editing up a notch... 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have been using entry-level NLEs (e.g. Vegas Movie Studio, Pinnacle Studio, Magix Movie Edit Pro) for about four years. Any progress in my editing skills came from the traditional 'trial and error' approach, and from learning by watching other amateur-produced movies in a video club that I belong to...

"Editing Digital Video" helped me learn new techniques and approachs to editing my movies. Suggestions on how to get organized, good definitions & explanations of editing jargon, and the included footage for an editing exercise all help you take your editing up a notch to produce better movies.

The book is text-heavy---I would like to have seen more illustrations, and possibly a professionally editing version (or two) of the editing exercise. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Authors explain how to use any tool--from iMovie or Premiere to appliances like Casablanca and Screenplay or professional systems such as Avid, Discreet, Media 100--to turn your imagination into results fast. Softcover. CD-ROM included.
