Sloppy Stuff- Not For Beginners 1 out of 5 stars.

I'm new to Premiere so I thought this book looks rather promising.
I have to admit I haven't read the whole book. I'm still stuck at chapter 1 ('Premiere Quickstart'), and that's because the steps given are not entirely in sequence, some important labels in the diagram are missing (where's the thread area you're talking about?), and things work out differently than described.
In summary, this book (at least the first chapter) is a sloppy piece of work. Don't touch it if you're a beginner.

Most of what is in this book really has very little to do with making video look like film. Rather, Shaner spends a lot of time talking about very basic issues of general photographic lighting as well as audio editing -- not sure what audio has to do with the "film look" really. He also spends a lot of time talking about aspect ratio such as 16:9 which imply film format, but again -- it is a technique that has NOTHING to do with REALLY making video look like film. Finally he includes a short video that has been altered using the "Magic Bullet" software he seems to promote a lot. The sample he includes is quite awful. Honestly, the original unprocessed video looks BETTER the final "film look" outcome. The "film-look" template which is available with even the most basic digital editing software such as an entry level Pinnacle software.

This is a horribly written book, flawed by numerous instruction errors and miserable Quality Control and editing by the publisher. The premise and idea of this series is commendable, but as someone who teaches After Effects and Premiere, this was a sad experiment. I much prefer Adobe's Classroom in a Book, and I generally find much better third party titles than Adobe's. If possible, wait for more titles for the new version 6.5 to come out... authors will have had more time to catch up to the program than this particular volume.

An extremely well presented, and surprisingly complete inroduction to Adobe Photoshop 6. The organization of material and page layout are outstanding, together with spiral binding and "place-mark" cover create an extremely user-friendly courseware. The focus is on essential real-world applications of the software, not special effects. Much more than an exercise book, this book will continue to serve as a reference long after the "course" is completed. Of the Photoshop introductory courseware I've seen, this is the best.

As a classroom teacher, I can assure anyone who buys this book that they can't beat it at twice the price. If you take the time to do each lesson, you will feel extremely comfortable with a very complicated program

As a previous reviewer stated, if all computer books were written this well, software publishers could close down their tech support departments.

Easily worth twice the price. The only fault (?) I found was that the CD was prepared for Windows and doesn't work on Windows 95 (no one, of course, said it would or should) but the only consequence was that certain introductory movies were not accessible; everything else was. If all instruction books were written this well, we'd all use computer programs better and with more enjoyment. Someone put a lot of thought, effort, and testing into making this exactly what it asserts: A Classroom in a Book. A Quality Product, just like Premiere itself.

There seems to be a lot of "Teach Yourself Visually" books on the market these days, so I guess the format works for some, but it definately didn't do much for me.

It was boring, lacked detailed information, and seemed to start in the middle of what you'd need to know to get started, so I lost interest quickly.

The entire book is basically written in point form, with not so helpful screenshots to guide you through, but it never gives any detailed information on anything - instead assuming that the reader just wants to learn where to point the mouse. If that's all you DO want, maybe this is for you. If you want to really LEARN about using this professional software, look somewhere else.
