Perfect For Newbies 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is a great reference for anyone who has never edited video before. I don't have any experience with Final Cut Pro or any other editing program, but this book covers everything I need to know to create my own videos. It begins with basic editing tips and moves on to things like high-tech transition effects. The CD that comes with it also has several different plug-ins you can use to spice up your movies.

Don't bother 1 out of 5 stars.

Don't bother getting a DUMMIES book for Final Cut Pro. There are better books that achieve the same thing and can take you from ground zero to a point of understanding and knowledge that cost nearly the same. For instance, "Final Cut Pro 4 for MAC OSX is a great book". Even if you've never editing anything before don't waste money on DUMMIES. It's a good series for many things of course but not in this area.

Quiet on the Set! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Tired of making the same old home movie? Everyone with a video camera has made one. You know, they are usually titled "The Johnsons Family Vacation", "Christmas 2003" or "Johnny's 2004 Soccer Season Highlights." If you're ready to take the next step and create a movie that won't have the audience falling asleep in their seat, I suggest that you run to your local bookstore and purchase a copy of "Make Your Own Hollywood Movie."

"Make Your Own Hollywood Movie" is a great reference book. By just cruising through the index you can see it covers everything from creating a story board to lighting, special effects, and stunts. Anything and everything you want to know how to do is there. Considering that purchasing a new camera and computer will cost you any ware from $1000 to $5000 dollars spending $29.95 on a great "how to" book is cheap.

I found the book very easy and fun to read. Each chapter was thoroughly laid out and with many great pictures and diagrams. The Author claims the book is a "step-by-step guide" to digital movie creation. I would agree.

The majority of the information can be used by anyone with basic editing software like Apple's iMovie. Many of the high-tech editing and special effects will require using professional software like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere. But that shouldn't let stop you from buying the book. Learning how the process works will only make you a better videoographer and editor.

The "Hollywood Tricks" chapter was my favorite. The author explained in great detail how to build lunar landscapes out of clay and flour and then create outer space, stars and then add a space craft to the prop. And if that wasn't enough you can make explosions to create drama. I could easily waste a whole weekend recreating my favorite Star Wars scene.

I would recommend this book to anyone with a video camera. Those days of filming "Susie's Cello Recital" are over. Turn that Cello recital into an award winning concert. "Make Your Own Hollywood Movie" will show you how.

Editorial Review:

With an easy-to-follow, hands-on approach that includes over 500 images, this book aims to help transform you into a pro. Learn all the facets of moviemaking, including scripting, storyboarding, casting, shooting, editing, and publishing the finished movie to CD, DVD, and the Web.

An Excellent Introduction to Video 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Like many new editors, I came to Final Cut Pro with no NLE experience nor any knowledge of video whatsoever. In fact when I started, just over two years ago, there was not a single book on FCP. Since that time there have been a number of excellent books published about FCP. I have bought and read all of them.

During the past two years I have learned the terminology used with FCP video. But my knowledge is FCP-centeric. I had little understanding of video, it's relationship to film or it's history.

Last week I discovered "Nonlinear/4" written by Michael Rubin. I can best describe this book as a complete reference guide to all things video. But its actually more.

Each element covered in this book is in it's own section. Each section is brief, concise and clearly written. Very simple (read: clever) analogies are employed to help the reader gain understanding. While there is technical information, the book is not overly technical. There is a great deal of art, illustrations and photos. This art furthers the learning experience and is one reason that the book works so well, the art really illustrates the
lessons being taught.

The history of film and video runs throughout the book. This history is essential to understanding how and why video is what it is today.

I learned a great deal from this book and now have a better understanding of why things are the way they are. Our modern day NLE Digital video is the result of a long legacy, going all the way back to the early days of film. This book is a great reference guide as well with a full index at the back.

I am really glad that I came across Nonlinear/4. I truly have a better understanding of what's going on with Video and how it works. This knowledge will certainly help me with FCP.

Not a good reference book 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you're an experienced iMovie user wanting to learn FCE, then this book is not the best one. It's a useful tutorial book for a class, but simple references like creating slow motion clips, importing media from iMovie or iTunes, switching around clips, etc. are simply not easy to find using the index of this book.
I highly suggest Final Cut Express HD for Mac OS X (Visual QuickStart Guide) as a much better reference guide. And if you can find some audiovisual tutorials about FCE, those would work better for you than this book.

Editorial Review:

The only Apple-authorized guide to Final Cut Express HD 3.5, this book delivers the techniques you need to make movie magic with DV or HDV footage. Each chapter presents a complete lesson in an aspect of video editing and finishing, with hands-on projects to complete as you go. All the files you need are on the included DVD-ROM. You’ll learn how to make effective edits and adjust them precisely; create polished transitions and sophisticated composites; add audio tracks, titles, and speed and motion effects; then color-correct and finish your video for export to DVD or the Web. Whether you’re a student, a devoted amateur who’s serious about digital video, or a professional who needs a comprehensive editing program for your home computer, you’ll find everything you need to learn Final Cut Express HD 3.5 within the pages of this book. DVD-ROM includes lesson and media files for over 20 hours of training.
