Simply Brilliant. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a brilliant learning method. Most language CDs/DVDs are too primitive for practical study, and focus on isolated phrases at the expense of a thorough grammatical understanding of the target language. This set of audio files, however, gives a complete basic vocabulary with individual words both by themselves and in context, enabling the student to understand the underlying language structure simply by listening and to start building his/her own sentences. Its perfect for the daily commute or a walk in the park, and feels just like an endlessly patient teacher tutoring you in a one-on-one lesson. If you want to learn Chinese all youll ever need is Beverly Hongs 'Speak Chinese Today' and iSpeak Chinese - put it on your iPod right away and see results immediately!

Editorial Review:

Podcasting does for Internet audio listeners what TiVo does for television viewers--it puts you in charge of when you enjoy a program. Podcasting is a web-based broadcast medium that sends audio content (most commonly in the MP3 format) directly to an iPod or other digital audio player. You subscribe to audio feeds, receive new files automatically, and listen to them at your convenience.

As you can imagine, podcasting is taking the "blogsphere" by storm. A podcast is a professional-quality Internet radio broadcast, and like blogging and HTML before it, this revolutionary new way of publishing to the Internet has become the new outlet for personal expression.

If you've got Internet access and a copy of Podcasting Hacks, you can find out just how easy it is to listen to and create your own Internet audio programs. With Podcasting Hacks, Jack Herrington, a software engineer with 20 years of experience developing applications using a diverse set of languages and tools, delivers the ultimate how-to of podcasting for anyone looking to get the most out of this hot new medium.

Since August 2004 (the month that iPodder.com editor Adam Curry considers the start of podcasting), audio blogging has exploded. Podcasts cover every conceivable topic, including sex, relationships, technology, religion, home brewing, recreational drugs, rock 'n roll, food, entertainment, politics, and much more. There were podcasts from the Democratic National Convention in Fall 2004, and some programs on Air America and NPR are also podcasts.

Podcasting Hacks offers expert tips and tools for blogging out loud--for transmitting (and receiving) audio content worldwide with ease. This groundbreaking volume covers both entry-level and advanced topics perfect for aspiring and experienced podcasters. Herrington shows you how to get started, create quality sound, use the right software, develop a great show, distribute a podcast, and build an audience. More advanced topics include audio editing, podcasting on the go, and even videocasting.

Editorial Review:

A music lover’s astonishing account of his obsession with the iPod, and a fascinating look at the phenomenon that has revolutionized the way we hear music.

First came fire, the wheel, and penicillin…and then, according to Dylan Jones, a compulsive album collector, music journalist, and multi award-winning men’s magazine editor, the next great invention to bless the human race was the iPod, Apple’s groundbreaking mp3 player. Small, sleek, and sexy, but with the capacity to hold up to ten thousand songs, the iPod has stunned music lovers and gadget enthusiasts around the world. It has delighted indie-rock college kids and elderly jazz fans, classical musical buffs and teenage hip-hop hustlers, almost no technology has so seamlessly crossed the great divide.

In iPod, Therefore I Am, Jones tells the story of his own entrée into this exponentially growing cult, taking the reader on a hilariously candid journey through his lifelong addiction to all genres of music, however unfashionable. Along the way, he gives a tantalizing behind-the-scenes look at the genesis of the iPod, from its original conception by Steve Jobs, the man who famously reinvented Apple Computer, to the landmark design of Jonathan Ive, the innovative designer who has become a legend in his own time. Behind it all, we get an insight into the way that the iPod has radically transformed the way we approach music, listen to music, and possess music—turning all of us into curators. Appendices containing Jones’s top playlists and his expert tips on getting the most out of your iPod make this love song to the iPod as practical as it is entertaining.

A definite "must-see" 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Shelly Brisbin's "Easy iPod and iTunes" by Que publishing may be the best book available for using an iPod or iTunes. (After reading it, I have no need for an alternate book to learn from.)

Shelly writes clearly and concisely, in a "playful" tone. Her "Easy" book is indeed easy to read and follow. Or you can skip to what you want since the Parts (chapters) are divided well. Every single page is filled with large, colorful pictures, making it appealing and quick to learn with the aid of pictures. "See it done. Do it yourself." A manual cannot be easier to use, plus this soft-cover book doesn't have the "dry" feel of a manual. The back cover says, "No need to feel intimated; we'll hold your hand every step of the way." Why struggle through a manual?

Thanks Shelly Brisbin for writing this "reference" book!

Editorial Review:

Frustrated by the lack of instructions and documentation that came with your new iPod? Don't throw it out the window! Instead, consult Easy iPod and iTunes, a full-color, visually oriented book that covers iPod and iTunes usage from the beginner's point of view. With step-by-step instructions and visual elements on every page, you will go from opening the iPod box and installing its software, to ripping music in iTunes, syncing with the iPod and beyond. You will learn to work with music files, podcasts, audio books and Internet radio, and you'll discover the iTunes Music Store and how it works with iTunes and iPod. As long as you have a current model iPod (including the new Nano and video models), this book will work for you.

Outdated? - Perhaps 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The previous reviewer dismissed this as outdated and suggested if you don't already own an iPod, to avoid the book. I bought the book after making the decision to buy but before I had actually made the purchase. I'm glad I bought it. I found the book highly informative both in the features and use of the iPod but also with the iTunes software. For me, it is indispensible. If you're planning on purchasing an iPod, or already have one and are trying to get maximum functionality out of both the iPod and iTunes, this is money very well spent.

Editorial Review:

The updated Rough Guide to iPods, iTunes & Music online is the ultimate companion to the defining gadget of the digital music era – and an essential guide to sounds on the Net, on your PC or Mac, and in your pocket. As in the previous edition, it explains how to select the right model and get the best deal, how to import your CDs and manage your music library, how to digitize music from vinyl or cassette and download from the best online sites and stores, all this plus much, much more. Whether you already have an iPod or you’re thinking of buying one, you need this book.
