Hardcover-CD? 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 17 people found this review helpful.

IT seems this book is a CD for use of a Wireless Area Network (WAN), so how can it possibly be hardcover? And why is is three times more expensive than the normal edition, but still looks like it is the same 10th edition material on CD ONLY?

If you're a mechanical engineer, save your money 3 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this, along with Lineburg's Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam when I took my PE Exam. I cracked it open a few times while studying and once during the exam. I didn't find what I was looking for and I almost NEVER use it during my work. I am in the process field, pumps, pipe, etc. I use Lindeburg's manual at least twice a week. Skip this book and buy something more specific to your specialty. It's far to generic to be useful to me.

I loved this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I think its very useful handbook. A must have for all fresh graduates.

A Must Have for Engineers 5 out of 5 stars.

This belongs on my desk. Katrina took my previous copy. I feel better having it within arms reach.

zune for dummies 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As one reviewer called this book "...for dummies who can't find the information free on the web" - this is true, but for anyone who doesn't have the TIME to search through the zillions disassembled pieces of information about the Zune or the knowledge of which of those pieces they need, this is a great reference - a lot of it was almost too technical, but I got the basics of what I needed and recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to take the time to wade through the endless information on the web, free through it may be!

Editorial Review:

Let Microsoft insiders Brian Johnson and Duncan Mackenzie introduce you to Zune, the exciting new portable media player that plays both audio and video. They explain the numerous entertaining possibilities of Zune, such as transferring a music collection to your Zune, purchasing new music, connecting with friends who share similar taste in music via ZuneLive!, and hooking Zune to your Xbox 360. Additional fun features covered include watching video on Zune, subscribing to podcasts, creating content to share with others, and a preview of upcoming Zune models.

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this in June of last year and I wish I'd not. I'm a live tv camera shader so my background is in color manipulation. If you have absolutely no idea how to manipulate colorimetry, this is not the book for you at all. It tells you how to drive the software with some helpful color hints scattered about. Read the manual, work in the application, scour the net and Amazon for information about color and you can learn the same stuff.

If you have a background in color manipulation, skip this book and read the manual to learn how to drive Apple's Color. If you're like me and enjoy constant learning, run and pick up "Encyclopedia of Color Correction" by Alexis van Hurkman. It's a far more useful text than this title.

Editorial Review:

In this guide to Apple’s masterful new color grading and finishing application, award-winning colorist David Gross starts with the basics of color balancing and correction and move on to the fine points of secondary grading. Topics include scene matching, using vignettes to isolate and track regions, creating advanced color effects and “looks,” skin tone adjustments, and adjusting the composition and framing of a shot. As with the other titles in the Apple Pro Training Series, each chapter in this Apple-authorized guide represents a complete lesson--with a project to complete and a review section to reinforce the lessons. Superb footage, including several BBC productions and broadcast commercials, provide real-world examples for you to work through as you master this revolutionary software.

Editorial Review:

"Mathematics can be as effortless as humming a tune, if you know the tune," writes Gareth Loy. In Musimathics, Loy teaches us the tune, providing a friendly and spirited tour of the mathematics of music—a commonsense, self-contained introduction for the nonspecialist reader.

Volume 2 of Musimathics continues the story of music engineering begun in volume 1, focusing on the digital and computational domain. Loy goes deeper into the mathematics of music and sound, beginning with digital audio, sampling, and binary numbers, as well as complex numbers and how they simplify representation of musical signals. Chapters cover the Fourier transform, convolution, filtering, resonance, the wave equation, acoustical systems, sound synthesis, the short-time Fourier transform, and the wavelet transform. These subjects provide the theoretical underpinnings of today's music technology. The material in volume 1 is all preparatory to the subjects presented in this volume, although either volume can be read independently. Cross-references to volume 1 are provided for concepts introduced in the earlier volume, and additional mathematical orientation is offered where necessary. The topics are all subjects that contemporary composers, musicians, and music engineers have found to be important. The examples given are all practical problems in music and audio. The level of scholarship and the pedagogical approach also make Musimathics ideal for classroom use. Additional material can be found at a companion web site.

Editorial Review:

While the last version of iMovie gave moviemakers the ability to capture and edit widescreen High Definition Video (HDV) from the new generation of camcorders, iMovie 6 is all about the ease of moviemaking itself. iMovie 6 includes five professionally designed themes with backgrounds, motion graphics, titles, and effects that act as building blocks for your projects. You can preview transitions and stunning new video effects--such as time-lapse video--in real time using the full screen. Or edit audio and add sound effects with a new built-in sound studio. For presenting your movie, Magic iDVD offers easy-to-use themes, including new widescreen options.

Whether you're a professional or an amateur moviemaker, this is amazing stuff. But if you want to learn the full capabilities of these applications, Apple documentation won't make the cut. Instead, iMovie 6 & iDVD: The Missing Manual is the ideal third-party authority that covers all of these changes through an objective lens. This witty and entertaining guide from celebrated author David Pogue details every step of iMovie 6 and iDVD production. The book shows you how to:

  • Work on multiple iMovie projects at once and drag & drop clips among them
  • Output your creation to a blog, its own web page, or as a video podcast with iWeb
  • Use "Magic iMovie" to import your video and make a movie for you
  • Integrate with other iLife programs to use songs, photos, and an original soundtrack
  • And a whole lot more

From choosing and using a digital camcorder to burning the finished work onto DVDs, posting it online, or downloading it to an iPod, iMovie 6 & iDVD: The Missing Manual zooms right in on the details in a clear, concise, and understandable manner. The book also provides a firm grounding in basic film technique so that the quality of your video won't rely entirely on magic.

Not Worth the money, but still pretty good 3 out of 5 stars.
53 of 55 people found this review helpful.

I've been in a fight w/ Apple and Peachpit over this 'new' version of DVDSP4.
I'm an Apple cert. instructor for this and other ProApps. When I started reading the new book I found the same mistakes from version 3 had been copied over to version 4.

Granted, the new compressor app is great but nowhere does it explain the new features of DVDSP4 like support for external video, VTS editing and the whole HD support. I was told by Apple and Peachpit that this version of the book was intended to be an 'revision' of the old book; however, the general advertising of this book says 'Fully Update' instead of 'Fully Revised'... a bit misleading to the people who thought this version would help instruct students on how to best use the new features. We'll have to wait.

Editorial Review:

Now the best-selling book on DVD Studio Pro is even better. Updated for DVD Studio Pro 4.2, this Apple-certified book uses striking, real-world footage (including the HD documentary One-Six-Right) to build four complete DVDs. This revised edition covers integration with Final Cut Pro 6,  Motion 3, and Compressor 3, as well as the new SD-to-HD workflow. Each chapter presents a lesson in an aspect of DVD creation and finishing, with hands-on projects for you to complete as you go. After learning how to storyboard your DVD and plan its interactions, you’ll set chapter markers, create stories, build still and motion menus, and add overlays and subtitles. You’ll also learn to work with multiple audio tracks and camera angles, create smart buttons and custom transitions, professionally encode audio and video files, and create useful scripts.

Cool Mac Apps 3rd Edition 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

"Cool Mac Apps" Third Edition by Robin Williams is an excellent information provider for anyone using Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Covered in this book are the mac applications iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iTunes, Mail and more, twelve in all.
There is an explanation of the application and instructions on how to do each of the functions within the application. The book is quite detailed. For example iPhoto itself is 97 pages.
This is an excellent book for reference after going through it at least once. I have prior editions and refer to them whenever I have a question on a covered application. Of course with each new Edition many features are repeated from the prior but the latest Edition incorporates all the new features of those applications.

This book is now part of my reference library and it is highly recommended. I would give it a 5 star rating.
