Unique insights from an atheist’s Sunday-morning odyssey

When Hemant Mehta was a teenager he stopped believing in God, but he never lost his interest in religion. Mehta is “the eBay atheist,” the nonbeliever who auctioned off the opportunity for the winning bidder to send him to church. The auction winner was Jim Henderson, a former pastor and author of Evangelism Without Additives. Since then, Mehta has visited a variety of church services–posting his insightful critiques on the Internet and spawning a positive, ongoing dialogue between atheists and believers.

I Sold My Soul on eBay tells how and why Mehta became an atheist and features his latest church critiques, including descriptions of his visits to some of the best-known churches in the country. His observations will surprise and challenge you, revealing how the church comes across to those outside the faith. Who better than a nonbeliever to offer an eye-opening assessment of how the gospel is being presented–and the elements that enhance or detract from the presentation.

Mehta announced prior to his churchgoing odyssey that he would watch for any signs of God’s existence. After spending Sunday mornings in some of the nation’s leading churches, what happened to the man who sold his soul on eBay? Did attending church change his lack of belief? The answers can be found inside.

Editorial Review:

The core idea behind Real World Web Services is simple: after years of hype, what are the major players really doing with web services? Standard bodies may wrangle and platform vendors may preach, but at the end of the day what are the technologies that are actually in use, and how can developers incorporate them into their own applications? Those are the answers Real World Web Services delivers. It's a field guide to the wild and wooly world of non-trivial deployed web services. The heart of the book is a series of projects, demonstrating the use and integration of Google, Amazon, eBay, PayPal, FedEx, and many more web services. Some of these vendors have been extremely successful with their web service deployments: for example, eBay processes over a billion web service requests a month! The author focuses on building 8 fully worked out example web applications that incorporate the best web services available today. The book thoroughly documents how to add functionality like automating listings for auctions, dynamically calculating shipping fees, automatically sending faxes to your suppliers, using an aggregator to pull data from multiple news and web service feeds into a single format or monitoring the latest weblog discussions and Google searches to keep web site visitors on top of topics of interest-by integrating APIs from popular websites most people are already familiar with. For each example application, the author provides a thorough overview, architecture, and full working code examples. This book doesn't engage in an intellectual debate as to the correctness of web services on a theological level. Instead, it focuses on the practical, real world usage of web services as the latest evolution in distributed computing, allowing for structured communication via Internet protocols. As you ll see, this includes everything from sending HTTP GET commands to retrieving an XML document through the use of SOAP and various vendor SDKs.

Disregard the recent grumbling over recent eBay Store fee hikes. A well-run eBay Store is worth every penny, and can add considerably to your profitability! Recent enhancements to eBay's Store features make running a Store an essential part of successful eBay selling. Stores give you so many new ways to cross-promote your eBay items that running a Store gives you an almost unfair advantage over sellers without one.

When shoppers enter your eBay Store they visit your own private eBay. They see only your items, organized in a way that suites what you sell; and when they use your Store's search feature only your items appear.

Stores can actually reduce your Final Values fees by 75% in some cases. Stores let you organize, showcase, cross-promote and catalog all of your items, (including auctions) in ways that make it easier for shoppers to find and purchase your items.

eBay Stores have come a very long way in the past few years, and when augmented with tools like eBay Express, Selling Manager Pro and Blackthorne, (all discussed in this book), they are poised for astronomical growth. If you are not onboard yet, it's time to get moving. You need a Store, and this book will help you launch and run a great one or bring your existing Store up-to-date.

Launching a Successful eBay Store offers eBay sellers tips, techniques, best practices and resources necessary to have their items gain high visibility on and off of eBay. You'll find out how to set up a new store, choose what to sell in the store, perform store bookkeeping, manage store inventory, promote the store on and off eBay, purchase eBay keywords and more. It will also show you how to take your selling to the next level, while saving money in the process.

Excellent for Much More Than Just eBay Photos 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Using simple, lo-tech language and a wealth of color photos, this excellent book can teach anyone to arrange, light, photograph and even edit macro (closeup) pictures. I bought it sight unseen on a friend's recommendation, and it's even better than I thought it would be.
The instructions are always clear and simple, and every instruction is illustrated with full-color, detailed examples. The results make you look like a professional photographer (or could even make you become one!).
I've bought tons of books on Amazon; but this is the first one I've felt compelled to review, because it's so darn good.

Editorial Review:

This must-have book features: professional secrets for taking great photos of everything from jewelry to cars; tips for using Photoshop Elements to enhance photos; an entertaining approach that makes even the advanced techniques easy to absorb; and page after page of inspiring full-color photos.

Letters to Ebay 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a very funny book, that is sure to entertain the people who receive it for Christmas.

Editorial Review:

By day, Paul Meadors is a fifth grade teacher in a small California town. By night, he trolls the millions of items for sale on eBay, posing as his alter ego Art Farkas, and catching sellers off guard with his ludicrous and bizarre questions about their auctions. As he amusingly demonstrates time and time again, even in today's hyper-vigilant and impersonal digital world, the spirit of human salesmanship lives on, no matter how outrageous the question or request. For example, Art asks the seller of a set of bongo drums if there would be a way to attach them to his grandmother's back so that she could take them to the corner and play on the street to earn her rent money--which elicits a sincere, yet bitingly humorous response. From the entertaining auctions themselves, to Paul's loony letters and the serious responses they provoke, LETTERS TO eBAY provides a fascinating and humourous glimpse into the strange world of eBay and those who dwell within.

If you have Titanium Ebay from the same author, this book is just a cut and paste work with an extended chapter on consignment 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

About 85% of the book is in Titanium Ebay, and in the exact same words. Its just cut and paste. If this is your first Skip McGraph book, this is excellent way to start.

I love McGraph style, and incisive info on the Ebay business. He tells you insider secrets of PowerSellers, and their tactics. But the best are the cases he makes, examples of what to buy, how to sell it and profit. He opens up your mind that almost everything sells.
