Editorial Review:

Updated to cover Flash MX, the newest version of Macromedia Flash, ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide, Second Edition is the one book no serious Flash developer should be without. ActionScript is Macromedia's programming language for Flash MX, the popular authoring tool for creating rich internet applications and animations for the Web. With Macromedia's new focus on application development, ActionScript now includes a direct drawing API, loading of external MP3 and JPG files, improved sound control, an extensive set of text formatting tools, complete support for component development using movie clip subclasses, local data storage, accessibility features, and much more. And ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide is the most complete, up-to-date reference available for the latest version of this language. Author Colin Moock, one of the most universally respected developers in the Flash community, has added hundreds of new code examples to show new Flash MX techniques in the real world: how to draw circles, save data to disk, convert arrays to onscreen tables, create reusable components, and preload variables, XML, and sounds. The book's language reference alone has nearly doubled from the first edition, with more than 250 new classes, objects, methods, and properties. You'll find exhaustive coverage of dozens of undocumented, under-documented, and mis-documented features. Along with the new material, Colin Moock has meticulously revised the entire text to conform to Flash MX best-coding practices. In particular, objected-oriented programming and the new event model get special attention in light of changes to Flash MX ActionScript. From sending data between two movies to creating getter/setter properties, the new edition of this book demystifies the often-confusing new features of Flash MX, giving developers easy access to its powerful new capabilities. ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide is structured so non-programmers can learn how to use ActionScript and programmers can take their skills to new heights. If you are in the market to really learn about the hows and whys of ActionScript, then this is the book for you.

good book for beginners and switchers 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Since I switched from Windows to iMac I was looking for a book the gives me an overview over the system. This book does an excellent job in doing so. It covers everything you need to know goes into some detail, but not too deep (which also would not be possible in a book like this, otherwise it would be thousands of pages long).

I can really recommend this book for people who switch or beginners.

(this is basically the the same review I wrote for the Mac OS X - the missing manual ... I think both are very comparable and equally good ... I preferred the layout of the missing manual, but thats just personal preference)

Editorial Review:

Cocoa® is more than just a collection of classes, and is certainly more than a simple framework. Cocoa is a complete API set, class library, framework, and development environment for building applications and tools to run on Mac OS® X. With over 240 classes, Cocoa is divided into two essential frameworks: Foundation and Application Kit. Above all else, Cocoa is a toolkit for creating Mac OS X application interfaces, and it provides access to all of the standard Aqua® interface components such as menus, toolbars, windows, buttons, to name a few. Cocoa in a Nutshell begins with a complete overview of Cocoa's object classes. It provides developers who may be experienced with other application toolkits the grounding they'll need to start developing Cocoa applications. Common programming tasks are described, and many chapters focus on the larger patterns in the frameworks so developers can understand the larger relationships between the classes in Cocoa, which is essential to using the framework effectively. Cocoa in a Nutshell is divided into two parts, with the first part providing a series of overview chapters that describe specific features of the Cocoa frameworks. Information you'll find in Part I includes:
  • An overview of the Objective-C language
  • Coverage of the Foundation and Application Kit frameworks
  • Overviews of Cocoa's drawing and text handling classes
  • Network services such as hosts, Rendezvous URL services, sockets, and file handling
  • Distributed notifications and distributed objects for interapplication communication
  • Extending Cocoa applications with other frameworks, including the AddressBook, DiscRecording, and Messaging frameworks
The second half of the book is a detailed quick reference to Cocoa's Foundation and Application Kit (AppKit) classes. A complement to Apple's documentation, Cocoa in a Nutshell is the only reference to the classes, functions, types, constants, protocols, and methods that make up Cocoa's Foundation and Application Kit frameworks, based on the Jaguar release (Mac OS X 10.2). Peer-reviewed and approved by Apple's engineers to be part of the Apple Developer Connection (ADC) Series, Cocoa in a Nutshell is the book developers will want close at hand as they work. It's the desktop quick reference they can keep by their side to look something up quickly without leaving their work. Cocoa in a Nutshell is the book developers will want close at hand as they work. Perfect For Newbies 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is a great reference for anyone who has never edited video before. I don't have any experience with Final Cut Pro or any other editing program, but this book covers everything I need to know to create my own videos. It begins with basic editing tips and moves on to things like high-tech transition effects. The CD that comes with it also has several different plug-ins you can use to spice up your movies.

Don't bother 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Don't bother getting a DUMMIES book for Final Cut Pro. There are better books that achieve the same thing and can take you from ground zero to a point of understanding and knowledge that cost nearly the same. For instance, "Final Cut Pro 4 for MAC OSX is a great book". Even if you've never editing anything before don't waste money on DUMMIES. It's a good series for many things of course but not in this area.

Editorial Review:

* Covers rendering, compositing, transitions, adding titles, audio and video filters, and advanced effects, as well as basic digital video editing information.
* Includes instructions on outputting the final product to videotape, DVD, CD-ROM, or even onto the Web.
* Provides practical, real-world solutions to managing media and incorporating various special effects into unique video/film productions.
* Includes a DVD packed with first hand commentary and project examples from the personal files of author Helmut Kobler, an independent filmmaker.

Editorial Review:

It used to be that two laptops, sitting side by side, couldn't communicate with each other; they may as well have been a thousand miles apart. But that was then, before the advent of Zero Configuration Networking technology. This amazing cross-platform open source technology automatically connects electronic devices on a network, allowing them to interoperate seamlessly-without any user configuration. So now you don't have to lift a finger! Needless to say, it has completely changed the way people connect to devices and programs for printing, file sharing, and other activities.

Zero Configuration Networking: The Definitive Guide walks you through this groundbreaking network technology, with a complete description of the protocols and ways to implement network-aware applications and devices.

Written by two Zero Configuration Networking experts, including one of Apple's own computer scientists, the book covers more than just file sharing and printing. Zero Configuration Networking also enables activities such as music and photo sharing and automatic buddy discovery on Instant Messaging applications. In fact, Zero Configuration Networking can be used for virtually any device that can be controlled by a computer. And this handy guide has the inside scoop on all of its capabilities-and how you can easily apply them in your own environment.

For the technically advanced, Zero Configuration Networking: The Definitive Guide examines the three core technologies that make up Zero Configuration Networking: Link-Local Addressing, Multicast DNS, and DNS Service Discovery. It also reviews a series of APIs, including C-API, Java API, CFNetServices, and Cocoa's NSNetServices.

Whether you want to understand how iTunes works, or you want to network a series of laptops and other devices at your office for maximum efficiency, you'll find all the answers in this authoritative guide.

This is a very useful book on SAP PM.This covers recent Version of of SAP PM ie 4.6x.Flow is smooth.Transaction codes are also available for quick navigation.

Teaches the fundamental concepts of SAP PM 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Rather than trying to be a detailed guide to Plant Maintenance, a comprehensive reference book, or a source of answers to complex problems, Stengl tries to teach the fundamental concepts of SAP PM.

A very basic introductory book that demystifies the PM module. Aimed at the newcomer to SAP R/3, the book is a great guide. And a guide any new traveler must have to navigate the highways and back roads of SAP. It works best as a supplement to a SAP-PM course, but lacks the depth of a resource book.

In Chapter 4 - "Objects in R/3 PM", the authors do a good job of explaining the relationship of Functional Locations, Equipment, PM Assemblies, and Materials. Chapter 5 attempts to tackle breakdown and corrective maintenance, having worked as a Maintenance Planner, my first reaction was humor. In a perfect world, the roles of Maintenance Planner, Maintenance Technician, and Maintenance Controller would be this structured and defined. In the real world things are not so black and white.

Buy the book if you are new to SAP PM. It is a nice entry point. If you are approaching the Plant Maintenance with prior SAP experience then I recommend skimming the chapters in a bookshop before buying online.

Not for bedtime reading 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book is a one-to-one version of the course material found in the Directory Services Integration and Administration v10.4 course, the Security Best Practices v10.4 course and more. The exercises are well thought out and easy to do. Not so easy to remember are the 800+ pages, but it is not meant to teach you all you need to know about being an SysAdmin. It is enough to get you through these two exams, which give you 7 credits and the ACSA. And it is enough to set you off into a job as Junior SysAdmin or, as in my case, a supporter with server duties.

Ideally, one should visit both official courses - not so much because more is offered in the actual courses than in the book, but rather because one can ask pointed questions of the teacher, that one cannot ask if something in the book is not clear.

As in most such books, it represents a beginning - the rest is a matter of acquiring experience. Do not expect this book to give you all the answers. I doubt if that would be possible. But it will give a whole lot of things to look out for and a whole lot of new input, especially if you have been doing some SysAdmin-ing and now want a look-see as to how the fulltime SysAdmins do it.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive, technical reference guide provides in-depth information on Apple technical architecture. It will teach the reader how to install and configure machines; architect and maintain networks; enable, customize, tune and troubleshoot a wide range of services; and integrate Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, and other Apple technologies within a networked environment. The book covers myriad system administration topics from Directory Services integration to Tiger Server deployment, Xsan administration, accountmanagement best practices, security best practices, and more. Following the learning objectives of the Apple Certified System Administrator exam, this book is a perfect supplement to Apple's own training class and a in-depth technical reference for existing system administrators and engineers.

Editorial Review:

If you used iPhoto when it first came out, you'll remember the way it slowed to a crawl once you loaded it with about 2,000 photos. Compare that to this year's model: iPhoto 6 can handle as many as 250,000 images and still have the power to run a host of suped-up features. Its new software engine lets you make changes with a drag & drop editing tool, find photos with a robust search feature, and manipulate images without affecting the originals in your master library. You can also:
  • View and work on full-screen images
  • Make quick edits with one click
  • Work with RAW images
  • Create cool new calendars, greeting cards and books
  • Post photos online with the new iWeb application
  • Use a method of sharing called "Photocasting"

Apple makes it all sound so easy: just drag this, click that and you're done. But, as intuitive as these features are, you can still get lost, especially if you're new to iPhoto. Not to worry. iPhoto 6: The Missing Manual gives you plenty of undocumented tips & tricks for taking advantage of the new version and every little feature packed into it.

It's the top-selling iPhoto book for good reason. With wit and objectivity, David Pogue and Derrick Story start you out with a crash course on digital photography, complete with tutorials on buying a camera, composing brilliant photos in various situations (sports, portraits, nighttime shots, even kid photography), and making digital movies. From there, you'll dive into every detail of iPhoto, from camera-meets-Mac basics to storing, searching, editing, and creating books, calendars and greeting cards. You'll learn to build a personal web site built with iWeb, and discover "Photocasting"-the new service that allows. Mac subscribers to publish photo albums online so that others can use the photos, even if they work on PCs.

With iPhoto 6, you could add 1000 photos a month for the next 20 years and not fill it. With iPhoto 6: The Missing Manual, you can get going in no time.
