Untitled

There's a good chance that anyone who's studied vector-based drawing during the last decade has read an Illustrator Visual QuickStart Guide in one of its many versions. Though this book has become the standard text in many design schools, it has evolved over the years along with the program itself. And with some of the radical changes in Illustrator 10 -- such as live distortion tools, dynamic data-driven graphics, and symbols to create repeating Web graphics and keep file sizes small -- the authors thoroughly revised this popular QuickStart Guide.

Illustrator 10 for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide includes information on all the latest features, a 24-page color section, and clearly marked locators to both new and improved features that can easily be found by simply flipping through the book. Best of all, it's delivered in a highly readable, entertaining, visual, and easy-to-navigate format. This affordable, task-based book may be the only one users need to create powerful graphics for print or Web.

Easy book to learn for dummies like myself. Lots of pictures and easy content.

Beautiful layout with a film POV, mandatory! 5 out of 5 stars.

I had a background in professional film production and analog video but had never worked with a non-linear editor before. This book explains everything from the point of view of a filmmaker not a computer tech and includes interviews with actual filmmakers. It is beautifully laid out and illustrated and takes you through the practical considerations of various stages of production. You will not get buried in arcane detail rather you will get a thorough understanding of everything you need to know and a broad exposure to more advanced concepts. I worked through all the exercizes with the provided Coney Island footage and then due to circumstances beyond my control didn't get back to using FCP for a year, when I was unexpectedly asked to sync an audio effect with a visual event for a director to see in five minutes. The training had stuck and I pulled it off. I much prefer this book to the Apple Pro Training Series and it gives a better overview of the whole editing process, so if you can only buy one book this is what I'd recommend.

Editorial Review:

Here is the follow-up to one of the most applauded Final Cut Pro books! Thoroughly updated for Final Cut Pro 4, this premier full-color guide emphasizes how to achieve professional quality results. It first introduces basic concepts, then leads you through a movie project from start to finish, while offering expert tips and advice from professional video editors. An abundance of striking illustrations and screen shots help you visualize important concepts and activities. New FCP features, all covered in this book, include better audio scoring, full-featured titling, and 24 frames-per-second capabilities for HD. The companion DVD features the book's sample video project for practice editing.

Appleworks 6 for dummies is great. Apple has manuals stored in Appleworks 6 but they get in the way of what you are trying to do. Having the book handy makes it a great asset for any Appleworks 6 owner. Easy step by step instructions.

This book really is for dummies. It explains Appleworks 6 well, and if you're new to Appleworks in general or if you are only familiar with Appleworks 5, this is definitely the book for you.

Editorial Review:

Advice from this leading Mac authority helps you if you're new to the Mac and need to get up to speed fast. For starters, you definitely need to know a few basics about the software suite that came with your iMac or iBook. Try spreadsheets and word processing, and then add drawings and charts. But if you really want to impress your peers, whip out your AppleWorks paintbrushes and palettes. And you'll be fully wielding your new creation tool when you set up an address book database, design a Web page, or build a business presentation.

Understandable help is finally here for FCP 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Remember when the most recent iMovie was released, how everyone was up-in-arms over the changes. Well, that version proved to be the version they should have had from the word "go." So some some hardy souls set sail for Final Cut waters (what's with the sea-fairin' analogy). Uncharted territory to be sure (oh ... I see). But bravely we pushed onward to the distant shores of the prosumer. But shouldn't we have a map (I promise, that's the end).

There are literally dozens of books and electronic tutors out there, not to mention Apple's One-on-One sessions to help you get a leg up. But still when you launch the program, be it Express or Pro, up come the `deer in the headlight' looks.

But here's a book for the novice seeking answers to the pro that needs the casual reminder. Lisa Rysinger, the book's author, has been steeping in professional video for a long time. Her book, Final Cut Pro 6 (US$46.95).

The first section of the book lays a thorough foundation of digital photography. It goes in to the lexicon of NTSC, analog vs. digital, and so forth. If you're a neophyte to the world of Final Cut do not skip this section as it will aid you when Ms. Rysinger guides you through the limitless possibilities in video editing. Remember, you have to know the rules to break them. An imperative read for the novice, a good refresher for the veteran.

Once you have mastered the foundations, Ms. Rysinger brings you along the step by step process of editing, first with the back story of Apple's involvement in video editing. Then we learn how to organize all of our raw material.

From here we go on to the introductions of all of FCP's various tools and their uses. (NOTE: If you possess FCE 4, you will have none of these extras. Whereas, if you still have a copy of FCE HD, you will have Soundtrack and Live Type.) These are what will really make your project shine.

You are then shown, with accompanying illustrations, the power that now lies at your fingertips. Rough cuts, the proper use of transitions and how to edit the waveforms of your audio tracks. And if the book isn't enough, there is an accompanying DVD that contains tutorials and a free trial of FX Factory plug-ins. Plus there is an HTML page crammed with valuable links. That should keep you busy for a while!

Final Cut Pro 6 is a worthy asset to your technical library and will serve as a handy reference as you wind your way through DV and your imagination. Now sit down at your editing console and break some rules.

Editorial Review:

In the world of Unix operating systems, the various BSDs come with a long heritage of high-quality software and well-designed solutions, making them a favorite OS of a wide range of users. Among budget-minded users who adopted BSD early on to developers of some of today's largest Internet sites, the popularity of BSD systems continues to grow. If you use the BSD operating system, then you know that the secret of its success is not just in its price tag: practical, reliable, extraordinarily stable and flexible, BSD also offers plenty of fertile ground for creative, time-saving tweaks and tricks, and yes, even the chance to have some fun.

"Fun?" you ask. Perhaps "fun" wasn't covered in the manual that taught you to install BSD and administer it effectively. But BSD Hacks, the latest in O'Reilly's popular Hacks series, offers a unique set of practical tips, tricks, tools--and even fun--for administrators and power users of BSD systems.

BSD Hacks takes a creative approach to saving time and getting more done, with fewer resources. You'll take advantage of the tools and concepts that make the world's top Unix users more productive. Rather than spending hours with a dry technical document learning what switches go with a command, you'll learn concrete, practical uses for that command.

The book begins with hacks to customize the user environment. You'll learn how to be more productive in the command line, timesaving tips for setting user-defaults, how to automate long commands, and save long sessions for later review. Other hacks in the book are grouped in the following areas:

Customizing the User Environment

Dealing with Files and Filesystems

The Boot and Login Environments

Backing Up

Networking Hacks

Securing the System

Going Beyond the Basics

Keeping Up-to-Date

Grokking BSD

If you want more than your average BSD user--you want to explore and experiment, unearth shortcuts, create useful tools, and come up with fun things to try on your own--BSD Hacks is a must-have. This book will turn regular users into power users and system administrators into super system administrators.

I beg to differ 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I found this book AMAZINGLY helpful! I'm a Java, C and C++ programmer moving over to RB because
it's cross platform and has a very easy GUI development system. I DON'T need another book to answer
what a byte is, how to write a loop or how to do Object Oriented Design.

This book does not coddle you. It assumes you know the basics of programming. It assumes you know
what you want to do. It will tell you how to do it. I have sticky tags all over my book, and it lives
at my right hand on my desk. It tells you all the strangenesses of RB on the different platforms, and how
to do the harder things. First read all the other books to learn the language. THEN GET THIS ONE!!!
You will be using it consistently.

Editorial Review:

REALbasic Cross-Platform Application Development treats REALbasic as a serious development environment and is targeted to developers with a minimum of programming experience, but who may or may not be new to the REALbasic platform. Written by a writer and developer with extensive REALbasic experience with input and guidance from REAL Software, this book will show you how to take advantage of the new cross-platform abilities of REALbasic and teach you how to create cross-platform applications. Don't waste any more time with the other novice-oriented REALbasic books out there. Get inside this development environment with REALbasic Cross-Platform Application Development.
