Weighing in at over 700 pages, this new edition also offers plenty of coverage on what's new in Mac OS X Tiger, including Spotlight, the search tool that helps you find anything on your Mac instantly; multi-way video in iChat AV; the enhanced Mail application; Automator, which lets you automate repetitive manual tasks; Tiger's ultra-useful mini-applications (known as "Dashboard Widgets"); and more. Rounded out with plenty of tips, tricks, and sage advice, this book is equally useful for Macintosh novices as well as early adopters looking for a comprehensive reference on what's new in this much-talked-about Mac OS upgrade.

Editorial Review:

In the only Apple-certified guide to advanced video editing techniques, award-winning filmmaker Michael Wohl delivers comprehensive training in the real-world skills that professionals use every day. Working through six hours of superb raw footage on two DVD-9 discs, you’ll learn to cut dialogue, action, comedy, chases, fights, interviews, documentaries, music videos, and multi-camera projects, as well as complete an entire audio mix.

Unlike other software books, Wohl teaches you to use Final Cut Pro’s advanced features while you explore the art of crafting a story on film. So, for example, rather than just learn how dynamic trimming works, you’ll learn why it works and in what situations you’d want to use it. And as you perfect your split edits, you’ll learn to match angles, cut for reactions, and use cutaways and inserts effectively in dialogue. You’ll discover how editing choices make comedy funny, drama moving, or chases suspenseful. Along the way, Wohl shares valuable tips on creating polished transitions, refining rough edits, and fixing screen direction errors. The book also covers audio editing and finishing, managing clips and media, transcoding video, and working with film and 24p—all in the context of making you a better editor and a more effective storyteller.

• DVD-ROM includes lesson and media files for over 40 hours of training
• Focused lessons take you step-by-step through practical, real-world projects
• Accessible writing style puts an expert instructor at your side
• Ample illustrations and keyboard shortcuts help you master techniques fast
• Lesson goals and time estimates help you plan your time
• Chapter review questions summarize what you’ve learned

Moving Up to FCE, the Dummies way! 5 out of 5 stars.
91 of 92 people found this review helpful.

If you're the typical Mac enthusiast, you've dabbled in all the i-Apps, including iMovie. If you're like me, you've outgrown iMovie for many of your video projects. If you're also like me, you haven't got the kind of cash to splurge on Final Cut Pro, which costs as much as one arm, one leg, and some spare skin from the other leg. Final Cut Express fills the gap, allowing the video editor who works exclusively with the DV format a way to afford a powerful editing program.

The book being reviewed here, lest I forget and go off into Apple rapture, is Final Cut Express for Dummies. This book is a fine example of the For Dummies series of books from Wiley Publishing, Inc. Author Helmut Kobler is a well-known author on the subject of Final Cut Pro.

The For Dummies series of books is usually the way to go when learning a new application, in my opinion. This book is no exception. It's simply written, and well laced with a practical writing style that works well when mired in the complexities of a software application like Final Cut Express. The humor is not as prevalent as in other For Dummies books, but that's well compensated for in the straightforward way the information is presented. I definitely feel that I could use Final Cut Express to edit and output my next training or wedding video.

The book progresses in orderly and clearly written fashion, from importing, capturing and organizing your video media to editing basics and some more advanced techniques. Of special note is the nice way he discusses audio techniques within Final Cut Express. The first noticeable thing about any amateur video is the inadequate sound, and the author takes a fair amount of space helping you get the best audio tracks from your raw audio media.

Another great section is the ten tips for becoming a better editor, and the ten tips for making your editing easier. Nothing is worse than reading the Final Cut manuals, but not having any practical experience to using them in a real world way. These two sections go a long way toward helping the novice editor get a leg up on real-world application of the techniques that can be used in Final Cut Express.

Do you dream of becoming a movie mogul? Dive right in with this friendly guide to low-budget video editing on your Mac! If ZERO stars were possible... 1 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

The only honor this book is worthy of is that of the fireplace... Here's why:

1) This book provides virtually ZERO hands-on training for the reader. The only hands-on exercises that you will get to try out is found in chapter two, in which you create a blank, Keynote presentation file (for the first time), and type in five lines of text -- and that's IT!! No, I am not joking... That's it.

2) The book focuses upon a "show and tell" (with zero practice or hands-on exercises) approach. It uses 3rd party templates, which don't come with either the software [Keynote] or the book. This keeps you from being able to try any of the concepts presented.

3) The book focuses mainly upon the "theory" of creating a presentation, rather than on teaching you how to use Keynote. I wanted to learn Keynote, not the theory of public speaking.

4) The book's chapters are filled with commerials, prompting you to purchase 3rd party products. This book (at times) looks more like the classifieds section of a newpaper than a training publication. If you don't want to believe me -- please go and check it out for yourself! Page numbers are included!!

a) Page 18 -- Asks you to buy OmniOutliner. (Which is not needed. Keynote provides this same functionality, but he doesn't take the time or effort to teach you how to do it.)

b) Page 25 -- Use (and purchase) Microsoft Office for the Macintosh, so you can use their clipart.

c) Page 26 -- Buy sounds and music from soundrangers at $1.50 per song, etc.

d) Page 27 -- Buy more stuff from Hemera, NovaDevelopment, and DigitalJuice, etc.

e) Page 28 -- Buy Garageband from Apple, etc, etc, etc. You get the idea.

Normally, I like to give books a positive rating -- as a college-level, computer science teacher for more than 10 years, I have dealt with many of such book publications. However, I honestly cannot give this book even one star -- it has failed to even begin to meet its' stated objectives on the back cover.

My advice, if you truly want to learn, PLEASE LOOK TO A DIFFERENT BOOK. This is not the one you are looking for.

Editorial Review:

With its dazzling transitions, dozens of professionally-designed themes, and wide selection of typefaces, Keynote—Apple's top-notch presentation software—lets anyone create elegant, attractive presentations with ease. Now, to help users deliver high-quality presentations even when they're short on time, is this smart, concise guide designed to take them from standing start to stellar finish with their first presentations. Rather than cover every last option Keynote offers, author Tom Negrino steps readers through on a single, basic presentation, showing them the quickest, easiest, most effective way to communicate their ideas. Each short lesson builds a component of a basic presentation, from creating slides, formatting charts and tables, incorporating sound and video, creating transitions, and adding a bit of polish to their debut presentations. Friendly, step-by-step instructions and large, full-color screen shots make the information instantly accessible.

For many users, it's not working with a new operating system that's intimidating, it's all that needs to be done before, during, and after the upgrade that has them running scared. That's why best-selling author Tom Negrino has devoted an entire guide to just that topic. Rather than cover every last feature and function of Apple's newest OS, Tom focuses on just the need-to-know essentials that will ensure a smooth transition to Mac OS X Tiger. In short order, readers will learn how to prepare for the upgrade, how to back up their data, what's entailed in the actual upgrade, and how to reinstall software. Once Tiger is safely installed, Tom provides a quick overview of what's changed before showing readers how to customize their systems and use three of Tiger's key features: Spotlight search, Automator (for streamlining repetitive tasks), and Dashboard (the control panel for Tiger's nifty new widget mini-apps). And for readers who want to know more about what's new in this system upgrade, the book provides a handy overview of the top ten new additions to Mac OS X Tiger.

Editorial Review:

Cocoa in a Nutshell begins with a complete overview of Cocoa's object classes. It provides developers who may be experienced with other application toolkits the grounding they'll need to start developing Cocoa applications. Common programming tasks are described, and many chapters focus on the larger patterns in the frameworks so developers can understand the larger relationships between the classes in Cocoa, which is essential to using the framework effectively. Cocoa in a Nutshell is divided into two parts, with the first part providing a series of overview chapters that describe specific features of the Cocoa frameworks. The second half of the book is a detailed quick reference to Cocoa's Foundation and Application Kit (AppKit) classes. A complement to Apple's documentation, Cocoa in a Nutshell is the only reference to the classes, functions, types, constants, protocols, and methods that make up Cocoa's Foundation and Application Kit frameworks, based on the Jaguar release (Mac OS X 10.2).

Misleading and unprofessional 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I bought the book since I am a beginner in ABAP. Completely disappointed.

* The book is OLD and fails to mention the SAP version it deals with.

*It does not explain ABAP actions but rather shows and tells. How can one learn from this. For example a "logon client" is described as "... the number that the user types in the client field." No mention of the significance of clients for security and different business needs.

*On top of that, the CD with the book claims to be the best instrument in teaching and showing ABAP but it does work on any system later than 95 or NT.

All in all a very poor book.

Editorial Review:

The ideal book for a programmer who must get started in ABAP immediately, and does not want to know the complete story of how and why ABAP was originated. Provides all of the essential information that an ABAP programmer needs and provides it in a readable format. Provides examples that are real and practical not text-book based, like other ABAP programming books. The book also provides insight into the SAP certification process, although not actual coverage of certification because candidates must have two years of practical ABAP programming experience to even enroll in the certification courses!
