Final Cut Express for Mac OS X: Visual QuickStart Guide by best-selling author Lisa Brenneis is the first book on the market to cover Final Cut Express ($299), Apple's new consumer digital video editing application. The powerful Mac-only application is virtually identical to Final Cut Pro¿acking only a selection of key high-end features. Apple is targeting small business users, educators, students, and advanced hobbyists who want to move beyond the limited video editing capabilities of iMovie, but who don't need all of Final Cut Pro's high-end features. With Final Cut Express, users get a full-featured DV editing package with professional-level editing, compositing, and real-time effects at a price they can afford.

Available in March, Final Cut Express for Mac OS X: Visual QuickStart Guide introduces video enthusiasts to the comprehensive set of tools available in Final Cut Express. The Visual QuickStart series' step-by-step instructions lead readers through the basics and quickly into more advanced video editing projects. Brenneis uses concise language and tons of screenshots to show readers how to edit video, work with hundreds of effects and transitions, and master the program¿ compositing, titling, and audio tools as well as how to output their finished work, whether it's to DVD or the Web. Brenneis and author Jeff Carlson have also created a booklet with Final Cut Express tips, available for free download at www.peachpit.com.

Editorial Review:

If it's good enough for the legendary Hollywood film editors, it's good enough for you! This guide is aimed squarely at Final Cut Pro users just like yourself--at corporate, commercial, and independent post-production houses--who want to move beyond simple Final Cut Pro installations for their film and video masterworks. Through project-based lessons and step-by-step instructions, this self-paced guide shows you how to integrate high-end capture cards, storage systems, and other industry-standard hardware into a Final Cut Pro workflow, as well as how to install and configure Final Cut Pro to make the most of your professional non-linear editing system. This is the technical information most frequently requested by Final Cut Pro users, pulled together into one book that is both a self-paced learning tool and the official curriculum for the Apple Pro Training and Certification Program. The guide covers everything from system configuration, storage, and device connectivity to the intricacies of SAN solutions, and includes special sections on optimizing short-form/broadcast workflows and long-form/HD workflows. I am a digital video producer by trade and this booked proved to me that I really don't know as much as I thought I did. It is simple to understand, but incredibly useful and informative. It will always be kept close to my editing station as an invaluable reference. It has already saved me from a making a couple of mistakes, that I had been making for years. YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

Editorial Review:

This work serves as an introduction to both the Final Cut system and to the digital video format in general, imparting relevant information about the specifications of the format and the proper configuration of the basic editing system in jargon-free terms. In the case of systems such as Avid and Media 100, many complicated user settings occur transparently and automatically as hardware operations. Final Cut Pro, however, requires some understanding and manual configuration of those settings in order to operate effectively. This work educates users in hardware and configuration issues. A step-by-step approach to digital video projects explains the why as well as the how behind all the elements, from configuring the system to the final output of a project.

Editorial Review:

With Final Cut Pro fast becoming the de facto standard for professional video editing, it's easy to believe the software is too "high-end" for beginners. But this isn't the case--Final Cut Pro is the ideal tool for novices and students, if you have the right teacher. Enter Beginners Final Cut Pro: Learn to Edit Digital Video. Now, with no prior video knowledge, you can learn the language of editing in just a few hours and master the essential tools to edit like a professional. Whether you're an aspiring professional filmmaker or a weekend hobbyist looking to improve on your iMovie projects, the tutorials and information in this book will help you make the leap to sophisticated, "Hollywood"-style editing.

Written in an approachable, friendly style by best-selling author and entertainment-industry veteran Michael Rubin, this real-world tutorial demystifies the process of using Final Cut Pro. Starting with the basics, like mastering control of frame-by-frame movement of video, the book methodically adds tools and builds complexity. The final chapter helps you make the transition from mastering the tools of Final Cut Pro to facing many of the real-world scenarios that beginners encounter as they use FCP with low/no-budget productions. Throughout the book, Michael shares invaluable tips based on his hard-won digital video experiences using Final Cut Pro and in the trenches of Hollywood and (the more frightening) family projects. When you're finished with the book, you'll be able to build effects tracks or add music and prepare your project for output to DVD. Final Cut Pro for Beginners includes a companion DVD with more than 4GB of video clips you can use for illustration, hands-on exercises, and or your own experiments.

With Final Cut Pro software and this tutorial to lead the way, you'll be fluent in no time--ready to go wherever your movie-making interests lead.

Small, concise. Binding and small size doesn't allow you to open it up flat without damaging binding.

A beginners book 2 out of 5 stars.

Very very basic introduction to FCP. Do not be fooled by the word "professional" in the title. It is aimed for complete new comers. As a professional editor I found that the book answered very little to any questions I may had. It is a good beginners book.

Editorial Review:

Digital Editing With Final Cut Pro 4: 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For anyone who wants to learn editing, not just how to manipulate a computer editing system (Final Cut Pro version 4), this book is a "must have." Written by two editor-director-producer-teachers committed to helping others make good films, it shows the reader the reasons to make an edit as well as the keyboard strokes required to execute it. I've read many manuals and editing theory books over the years and this book combines the two in readily accessible manner that gives the reader a strong start toward becoming an editor.
The book's 322 pages contain numerous, supportive photos and illustrations and a short glossary. Best of all, the book comes with a DVD containing a 45 minute tutorial for Mac or PC and 5 gigabytes of footage for cutting a dramatic scene on a Mac OS X with Final Cut Pro 4 software. The book describes how to cut the scene from start to finish, not choosing the exact edits or pushing the buttons for aspiring editors, but enabling them to do so. When done with the book and cutting the scene, the reader will have solid, practical editing experience along with a finished scene to show for their efforts.

Editorial Review:

Used in conjunction with 12 steps of AA, Lowdown shows that being a parent or caregiver and being in recovery can be a win/win situation. An easy-to-use book on a complex subject: how to break the cycle of addiction in high-risk families.

Finally, a book that gives more than the basics! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Wow! I've been working on FCP for over three years and thought I had a pretty good handle on it, but I learned so much from this book. Every other editing book I've bought feels like a basic intro to editing. This book actually gives more advanced tips and some great ideas for working with effects. And the presentation is lighthearted and easy to read through. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who already has experience with Final Cut Pro.

Editorial Review:

The evolution of Final Cut Pro continues to win over converts from other digital editing systems and challenge users of the earlier software versions. Filmaker tells how to make a film! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Zed Saeed has made brilliant short films, and won many awards for them. This book reflects his expertise as a filmmaker, and THEN his expertise with computer systems and applications. To take a mind, eye and heart which is trained in cinema and its esthetics, and to combine those assets with computer genius, is to provide experienced and would-be filmmakers with just the guide they need. What a gift!!!

Best Book for Newbie and Pro 5 out of 5 stars.

Normally I find the "Bible" series of books to be cumbersome and difficult to extract meaningful information. Not so for the Final Cut Pro 2 Bible. This book is a joy to read because all of the topics are thoughtfully separated and self contained. The use of cross-references gives you a complete treatment of any subject. The wealth of information is amazing. I am learning something new each day. Like the manual that comes with Final Cut Pro, this book also provides many examples of information helpful for using the program in the context of DV production. In reality it is two books in one: a book about Final Cut Pro and a book about digital video production.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive book covers the hugely popular DV cameras and video format. It shows you how even a novicevideographer can turn a DV camera and Macintosh into a top-flight editing studio -- all with the ease of plug-and-play! Find out how to apply compositing and special effects to your videos. And check out coverage of Firewire, QuickTime, and other technologies that are the key to Final Cut Pro's success. This book includes coverage of storage solutions, video cards, and other hardware topics. Plus, you'll find out how to troubleshoot problems with Final Cut Pro 2.
