Editorial Review:

I recommend this book to anyone looking into the platform or for those that are actively using it.

— Jack Herrington, Code Generation Network

While Apple provides a modicum of documentation for developers just starting with WebObjects, more-skilled WebObjects developers typically learn from each other or via trial and error. Practical WebObjects formalizes this process for the skilled and experienced WebObjects developer with this 100% pragmatic resource.

Written by two expert WebObjects developers, Charles Hill and Sacha Mallais, this book features working, world-tested solutions for difficult problems. Endorsed by Global Village, Practical WebObjects includes many topics not covered anywhere else, including localization, validation, and optimization.

Practical WebObjects will prove invaluable for WebObjects developers trying to solve specific problems and wanting to increase their overall knowledge of WebObjects.

Editorial Review:

WebObjects is an object-oriented Web application server that is used to generate scalable Web and Java applications from reusable templates. A product of Apple Computer, WebObjects¿ client list includes such Fortune 500 companies as Disney, Adobe, and the BBC. The productr Java 2 Enterprise Edition and its competitive pricing are expected to expand WebObjects¿ growing position in the market for Web application servers, a market that is expected to grow by more than $2 billion in revenue by 2002 (Forrester Research).

WebObjects Developeris a unique, step-by-step guide for intermediate- to advanced-level developers. It uses a hands-on instructional approach to make the sophisticated and sometimes complex WebObjects technology accessible to developers. The book explains WebObjects concepts and paradigms, and it illustrates the art of modeling applications with the Enterprise Object Framework.

The author provides practical insight into WebObjects development based upon his extensive experience as a consultant for major international corporations.

THE place to start for the new WebObjects Developer... 5 out of 5 stars.

I ordered this book expecting it to be a more advanced WebObjects book than it actually is. Unfortunately, most of the material covered in the first 11 chapters CAN be gleaned from Apple's documentation accompanied by some experimentation (which I've done over the last year or so). For me, those chapters were a rehash of stuff I knew, although I did pick up some good advice and tips from those chapters.

However, for a Java developer (the book doesn't pretend to teach you Java) who is new to WebObjects, those first 11 chapters are a a godsend, filled with well-written text containing a huge amount of practical advice and illustrated with extensive screenshots. Reading this book and doing the exercises will save you literally dozens if not hundreds of hours of "doing it the hard way."

Chapters 12 and 13, on the other hand, are filled with bits and pieces that are NOT easy (or sometimes possible) to get from the official documentation and can only be learned by finding a more experienced developer to mentor you. For me, these two chapters were worth the price, and for a computer programming book, the price is quite reasonable.

A big thumbs up for this book as an introductory WebObjects tome, and here's to hoping that some publisher will contract Mr. Marker to write a follow-up "Advanced WebObjects for Mac OS X" because I'll be first in line to buy that one.

Editorial Review:

Apple's best-kept secret may be WebObjects, its highly regarded, but little marketed Web-application development software. With WebObjects, you can easily create dynamic Web pages containing data from a relational database, making it perfect for e-commerce sites. Companies like UPS, Sony, Virgin and British Telecom use WebObjects to build their own custom Java-based Web applications that handle heavy user loads.

WebObjects 5 for Mac OS X: Visual QuickPro Guide offers task-based content and a tabbed format to let you learn as you work, giving you just what you need to know to get the job done-no wading through pages of lessons. By following the step-by-step tasks, you'll be building custom Web applications in no time.

This book is for novices only 3 out of 5 stars.

As a two year WebObjects develoer, I bought this book in hopes that it would help me learn how to implement some of the new powerful features in WebObjects 5. Unfortunately, there is very little code and examples and no CD Rom. It is 90% theory about general WebObjects and databse concepts that anyone using WebObjects for more than a few months should already know.

If you are new to WebObjects and would like to know what you can accomplish with the product, the book is decent. I give it 3 stars for that.

This book is only for beginners or people who want to know what you can do with WO. If you are Wo programmer or you have already read the tutorial, maybe you don't need this book.

Editorial Review:

This professional resource explains in full how to use WebObjects 5 for Java. You'll get details on deployment, database interaction, optimization, security, client and server-side technologies, and much more. There's also a jump-start section to guide you to the most productive and efficient ways to implement a WebObjects solution.

A step in the right direction. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is somewhat equivalent to the WebObjects Development 1 course offered by Apple. It might be for WebObjects 4.5, but everything in the book can be done in 5.0 without any large hassles (be sure to note that NSGregorianDate has been replaced by NSTimestamp). I haven't seen the "WebObjects5 for Java" book, however if you are wanting to learn WebObjects and looking for a book to set you on your way, this book will be a definite help. I suggest you read Apple's "WebObjects for HTML" PDF, then this book, then look at the old "EnterpriseObjects Framework Development Guide" PDF (listed under WO4.5 in Documentation on Apple's website) to get a clear view of what you are doing with regards to development with WebObjects.

I'm hoping the author will make a sequel to this book which covers most of what is learned in Apple's WebObjects Development II course. WebObjects has always been the best web development tool out there, but has lacked adequate documentation; with books like this, it is possible for more than just hardcore NeXTers to appreciate the power of WO.

Editorial Review:

Web development guide for the experienced Java developer, with a series of tutorials introducing software development with WebObjects. Shows how to create Enterprise Object Classes, applications featuring WODisplayGroup database data displays, Java Web applications that access relational databases, and methods that validate data entered by the user. Softcover.
