Entirely worthless 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It's slim - like a pamphlet - and infuriatingly replaces the manual in the Starcraft Battle Chest. The guide to the single player missions is reasonable, but they tend to be simplistic in any case (make a base or two, build a lot of defense, and crank out The Unstoppable Army so you can sweep the map in one massive wave.)

The unit descriptions and tactical advice are worth a buck or two at most; you'd be better off just fooling around with the units on your own to see what they do. Passages range from accurate but non-informative to flat out wrong - for example, the author claims one powerful spell that protects your units from all ranged attacks only works against air-to-ground fire. Captions often have nothing to do with their picture, which has nothing to do with the page.

There is a very brief section on multiplayer strategies, and it's the worst in the book. In describing the new layer of depth multiplayer adds, he offers this possibility (from memory):

"For example, if you say to your opponent "I hope your flank is protected", what should he think? Are you really about to attack his flank? This is the kind of thing that brings multiplayer to a different level from single player."

Nothing more needs to be said.

Editorial Review:

StarCraft: Prima's Official Strategy Guide is the perfect reference for solo play. The guide provides detailed walk-throughs for each of the game's 30 levels, with clearly marked maps and screen shots to help illustrate important points and tactics. The book offers more than 50 pages of statistics on the various units available and an easy-to-follow list of general strategies. Statistical information about the game's units and buildings, a section dedicated to the StarCraft campaign editor, and a brief multiplayer primer for gameplay on Battle.net round out the guide. --Michael Ryan

This book covers the very basics of Starcraft that everyone probably knows. It also covers making maps in great detail which is good. Creating custom troops and vehicles gets kind of tricky. Then there are the LOGIC COMMANDS that you have to create to make things work, if you like to write computer languages you will like this part, otherwise god help you because you won't be able to make your creation work at all. This book has lots and lots of SPACE and is worth $30 MAX

VERY GOOD GUIDE IF... 5 out of 5 stars.

I've had this book for several months. I read it in about two days. If you are a really good Starcraft player and have very good strategies (you can take on 4 comps or more) then this book won't help you. This book will help you, however, if you aren't that good. If it challenges you to take on two computers, this book will help you. I was already good at Starcraft before I got this book. The main thing I learned was about Zerg spells and variable fleats. This book has two main disadvantages: it does not include brood war units and it uses up too much space on unimportant information like unit and map properties. If you are very good at Starcraft, the best strategies you can get are from yourself. Hard core strategies can't be put on paper easily. One thing that I thought was very useless was the unit properties of all the Terran, Protoss and Zerg units. IF YOU ARE VERY GOOD, YOU DON'T NEED THIS BOOK! ...

Editorial Review:

StarCraft Multiplayer: Unofficial Strategies & Secrets focuses specifically on StarCraft's multiplayer mode instead of trying to cover every aspect and feature of the game. Penned by Gamers Extreme, a group of well-known hard-core game players (such as Dennis "Thresh" Fong, who cowrote the Sybex guide to Quake II), the book begins with a great introduction to Battle.net, Blizzard Entertainment's free online gaming service and the (primary) Internet home of StarCraft. The guide then moves on to the actual nitty-gritty of gameplay, highlighting basic tactics and in-depth, race-specific strategies that will help you win no matter what race you play as--or against. --Michael Ryan

StarCraft 64 Guide rocks! 4 out of 5 stars.

I found this guide very informative. I found all discs, beat all campaigns and conquered multiplayer. I give it 4 stars only because of its lack of multiplayer strategy.Anyways,it rocks!

The best way to learn or improve your Brood War game is... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

to buy this excellent book. I know how useful it is to watch replays, learn from friends etc. but this guide will provide a handy walkthrough, that will help you overcome the Single-player missions (that help you master the units and overcome the basics of the strategy) and then the Multy-player intense action. It provides excellent tips on how to beat each race (what strats to use against them) and even extras such as campaign editor and unit stats help. I for one didn't regret buying this examplary product, and I bet neither will you. It's cheap and useful, just what a SC gamer wants.

And I bet most of us are striving for SC perfecction, right? It's one of the most popular games of today, you know, if you don't play it, when you walk on the street people will point at you and say "hey look, there goes that guy that doesn't play SC, whatta case! When my son got all Fs in school, I said, "that's ok, you won the SC tourney and that's all that matters. Screw graduation ;)."."

Jokes and metaphor aside, I can assure you that if you really want to improve your SC skill, buy this book, it's well worth it and so much more... I know you probably play SC just for fun and not to be a progamer and travel to Korea etc. (neither do I), but it's more fun to squish others then get owned, you are happy instead of frustrated with just a little diligence and this game is a fine choice if you want to spend those endless-sleepless nights in front of the Computer ;).
