Thought-provoking SciFi noir 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's a pity that this fine, complex book is out of print--I encourage other readers to make the effort to find copies.

This story is hard to describe in a few lines, but centers around the protagonist's reluctant attempts to revive memories of his past as his former associates are picked off by an unknown murderer. Conspiracies and cover-ups abound. The characters are richly drawn and the near-future environment is wonderfully detailed and inventive. The novel takes the hard-boiled-detective noir genre and makes it fresh.

Thematically, the novel deals with some very interesting questions of identity and memory. One character who lives in a made-up reality seems to be the most lucid person in a world where identity can be manufactured. This is a book you can read both for the pleasure of the story and for the intellectual challenges the story poses.

My only problem was with the main character, who is such an ass that it's hard to identify with him as a hero. (Probably intentional on the part of the author.) But once the tale got into full swing, I forgot how much I disliked the hero and enjoyed the ride.

Hiding his former participation in the government's top secret Nimbus project, Peter Ambrose assumes the identity of a struggling jazz musician, until he learns that a killer is targeting his former Nimbus co-workers. Reprint.

Editorial Review:

In this second installment of THE WHEEL OF TIME series, young Rand learns that he's The Dragon reborn when he unwittingly uses his powers to subdue the Dark One's warriors. With the discovery, Rand knows he must find the Horn of Valere, with which he can summon the 100 Companions -- the greatest warriors that ever lived -- from the dead. When he finds it, the Dark One has little hope. Rand finds the Horn, but no sooner than he does, the Dark One's warriors steal it. It's up to Rand to get it back, before the 100 Companions are called to fight for evil, instead of good.

A Sequel Too Hard To Swallow 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Let me begin with the admission that I was unable to finish this book. I made it to about page 90 and just had to put it down. So, my review will be based on that fact. Also, there are probably what would be considered to be some plot spoilers here, so please skip this review if you don't want to know information that might reveal some plot twists too soon.

I am a Bladerunner fan. I love the original, and I love the director's cut. I own them both. I have watched them so many times, I have lost count. I thought it was awesome that somebody wrote a sequel. I was reluctant to buy it, because I am not a fan of Mr. Jeter's other works. However, I finally picked it up one day.

I was determined to finish this book. Even when I saw that J. F. Sebastian, to me a person who was irrefutably killed in the movie, was still alive. And then, Pris is still alive. I thought at first Mr. Jeter did a fair job with the characterization of Deckard, and then that began to disappoint me, too. Then finally, the thing that made me put the book down. Mr. Jeter would have us believe that Pris was not truly a replicant.

I ask any fan of the movie if this is even conceivable? To me it was not, and was the final nail in the coffin for the book for me. I just couldn't go on any further. The book became an insult to it's source material in my opinion. I honestly don't see how any one who is a true fan of the movie could enjoy this novel.

Like many sequels, this one would have been best left unmade. Most sequels are more stillborns than vibrant offsprings. The best sequels are the ones we create in our own minds. I applaud Mr. Jeter for his effort to create a sequel to such a bastion of sci-fi history, but I question his outcome. Like any author, he deserves praise for his talent, and his creation, but it is not for me, and I would imagine, not for many Blade Runner fans as well.

Based on the merit of reading the first 90 pages or so of this book, I do not reccomend it. I'll stick to the movie, but this book is not Blade Runner canon to me.

Editorial Review:

K.W. Jeter picks up the tale of Rick Deckard, the `blade runner' created by Phillip K. Dick and popularized by Ridley Scott's cult classic film.  Consistent with the sordid vision of 21st century Los Angeles crafted by Dick and Scott, Jeter creates a stylish piece of thrilling, futuristic suspense that finds Deckard not only in the role of hunter, but also hunted.  Again, Deckard is on the trail of an replicant, not knowing that it may be the most elusive and dangerous android of all.

A Brilliant Read 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I think what the reviewers who rated this book poorly, calling it 'dull & uncaptivating' & 'dont waste your time' are forgetting is that this books is meant for readers U16. The hero is a child, and if you're a child who reads this book, it is simply amazing: There's pretty graphic magic & action sequences, hero's, villians, treachery & love. And a boy who, against all odds (with the aid of friends) becomes all he can be & leads the fight against evil. I read this book when I was 14. It was amazing. Much better (at that age) than Tolkien, who I thought spent too much time describing the countryside than advancing his plot. For children, this should be next in line after Harry Potter.

Very ultra-traditionalist 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

It's basically a good book if you like traditionalist fantasy. But I give it only two stars because the characters seem more like archetypes than real flesh and blood people (The Wizard, The Chancellor, The King, The Lady in Distress, etc.) For a good read for me, the book would've had to have at least one good and decent Chancellor, and at least one bad and greedy Hand ;-)

Wonderful! Fantastic...a fantasy realm that lives! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

For the fourth time Mike Jeffries has kept me riveted to his story. His imagination has bound me into his story realm to the point that I wished that I too could take part in his dream.

From the start I was drawn into the realm of Elundium once again. The characters live and draw you into their lives...you worry that the Tunnlers and Marchers will gain justice, you hate the protagonists and wonder just how far they will go before they are caught...and will they be caught? An Excellent chapter in an excellent story.....that keeps me waiting inmpatiently for more Thank God the new one is out...I can't wait!

Part of a good series, but not as good as the previous books 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book, however it lacks the sting of the previous books of the series. This is a very character oriented book with only a little magic or mysticism in it. It looks at the fears of the common population of Elundium and how rumours can run riot when fear is mixed with the hate and envy of a different race (Tunnellers). It also shows how the evil within ones own people can be just as destructive as Krulshards and Kruel the pervious evil creatures of great power.

Editorial Review:

Running from false accusations that threaten to return them to slavery, Oaktangle, Sloeberry, and the rest of the gentle little people seek freedom and refuge in the land of Cawdor.

Editorial Review:

For millions of fans around the globe, the wait is over. Sequel to the international blockbuster bestseller A Crown of Swords, this epic volume continues one of history's greatest fictional journeys and the most extraordinary work of American fantasy ever published--The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and worldwide bestselling series--The Wheel of Time.

The phenomenal tale that is mesmerizing a generation of readers now continues.

The Seanchan invasion force is in possession of Ebou Dar. Nynaeve, Elayne, and Aviendha head for Caemlyn and Elayne's rightful throne, but on the way they discover an enemy much worse than the Seanchan.

In Illian, Rand vows to throw the Seanchan back as he did once before. But signs of madness are appearing among the Asha'man.

In Ghealdan, Perrin faces the intrigues of Whitecloaks, Seanchan invaders, the scattered Shaido Aiel, and the Prophet himself. Perrin's beloved wife, Faile, may pay with her life, and Perrin himself may have to destroy his soul to save her.

Meanwhile the rebel Aes Sedai under their young Amyrlin, Egwene al'Vere, face an army that intends to keep them away from the White Tower. But Egwene is determined to unseat the usurper Elaida and reunite the Aes Sedai. She does not yet understand the price that others--and she herself--will pay.

A book about treachery, hardship and heroism in a mystical land. There are two more books in the series after this one. I enjoyed it immensely.

Editorial Review:

Taking refuge from Elundium's mob in the ruins of a great city, the peaceful Tunnelers are threatened by Nevian, the Master of Magic, and a crippled boy and a runaway archer's son find the fate of their people in their hands.
