Adorable! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was lucky enough to attend a screening where Terry Jones read these stories aloud to an audience, and adults laughed as much as the children. I've been looking for this book to buy to read my nieces and nephews ever since. Very silly, unpredictable stories that kids will want to hear again and again.

Good stories, but some repeats 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is chockful of fun, wacky, and slightly twisted stories. One item to note, all the Terry Jones stories in the "Bedtime Stories" volume are included in this book. We have "Bedtime Stories" and love it -- my three year old especially loves looking at the great and plentiful illustrations while listening to the stories. "Fairy Tales and Fantastic Stories" has far fewer illustrations (only one or two per story), making it less interesting for younger ones. Still, it's a worthy purchase and one that we'll read for years to come.

Editorial Review:

How slow is an ogre? How do you get rid of a dragon if it’s on your roof? Would you go off with a fly-by-night? And who was the funniest dog in the world? These are a few of the important questions that are answered in this book. Terry Jones’s fairy tales take readers to strange lands and fabulous kingdoms where they will find mystery and magic, sadness and silliness, and more adventures than they will know what to do with.

It's all in the delivery 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a long fan of fantasy, I would first have to acknowledge that the overall plot of this story is pretty standard. This, however, was not a deterrent with a cast of personalities that were interesting and (just as importantly) stayed true to form. The guardsmen were lewd, the evildoer was appalling, and the common people were ... common.

The faults and simple actions of the lowly are as relevant to the story as those of royalty. The flashy scenes of your typical fantasy novel share center stage with mundane acts, humor and fate - all equally important and compelling.

Although this book/trilogy does not break any 'new' ground in the fantasy genre, it is an excellent delivery of a solid fantasy story.

Editorial Review:

The first novel in a brilliantly crafted trilogy. As the King of the Four Kingdoms lays dying, traitorous conspirators prepare a political marriage to ensure their control of the crown. But the young Melliandra refuses to betroth a sinister Prince and flees the castle in the company of a miracle-working kitchen apprentice.

Da Vinci Code w/ very explicit sex scenes 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

In the interest of full disclosure, I wasn't able to finish this book. I put up with several explicit sex scenes before finally putting it down due to the explicit sex with a kid scene. Very disturbing. If you've read the Da Vinci code you'll be familiar with the basic plot line of Jesus was married and the Chrisitian church covered it up so they could set up a religion. If these things don't bug you then it isn't a bad book, but I'm submitting the review I wish was here before I bought the book.

Editorial Review:

After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Webster travels to Jerusalem in search of a friend from his college days. The haunted city, divided by warring religious factions, offers him no refuge from his guilt and grief. As he is wandering through the streets and the archaeological sites, a mysterious old woman appears to Tom and delivers messages that seem beyond his comprehension. But a fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls that had been kept hidden by an old Jewish innkeeper appears to offer the key to understanding the apparition. Driven to the edge of insanity, Tom believes the spirit of Mary Magdalene is trying to reveal the hidden history of the Resurrection, and he struggles to reconcile the distant past with his own future before the threads of his identity unravel.

Interesting Cultures 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have to give this book four stars because : 1) I like alien races. 2) I enjoy books that deal with Asia and this book has the 'Dragon Empire', who seem to have a society based on early China. 3) It also has a mystery and I love trying to figure out things before the characters in the book.

It starts out with action and has enough to keep you going to the end.

Editorial Review:

DRAGON'S HONOR

Isolated for centuries, the exotic Dragon Empires finally ready to join the United Federation of Planets. But first the emperor's eldest son must marry the only daughter of his oldest enemy, bringing to an end decades of civil war. Without the wedding, there can be no peace -- and no treaty with the Federation.

As honored guests of the Dragon Empire, Captain Picard and the crew of the Starship Enterprise™ must ensure that the royal wedding occurs on schedule, despite the Empire's complicated and difficult codes of honor. And Dr. Beverly Crusher finds her loyalties torn when she wins the confidence of the unusually reluctant bride-to-be.

More than just a treaty is at stake, for a vicious race of alien conquerors will stop at nothing, from assassination to invasion, to keep the Empire out of the Federation. Picard must now use all his skills to save the Empire...and preserve the Dragon's Honor.

Jones does it again! 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Author Courtway Jones takes us once again to the Kingdom of Camelot. This second installment is this time told from the prospective of Morgan, daughter of Igraine and her first husband. Morgan becomes half sister to Arthur when King Uther takes the Lady Igraine for himself. Morgan's story of being trained by the Lady of the Lake, going off to raise the sons of a widower, and then returning to the intrigues at Camelot keeps the reader riveted. Jones develops his characters so well that you can see them in your minds eye and you find yourself swept up in the intrigue as though you are there. This book leaves the reader with a true sense of what the characters of legend might really have been experiencing. They are very realistically portaited. There are simple reasons for the way the story plays out, rather than the mystical stories usually spun around Camelot. This reader hopes that the next book is as good as the last two.

Editorial Review:

In an original treatment of the Arthurian legends and the sequel to In the Shadow of the Oak King, Morgan Le Fay blames Arthur's bloodline for killing her precious father and retaliates by placing a curse on Guenevere, rendering the queen childless.

What am I missing here? 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I really, really wanted to be impressed by "White Queen", because of what I'd read about it. But I found it nearly incomprehensible. When I finally finished reading the book (and it was a challenge to finish it), I sat back, sighed, and quoted myself a little Shakespeare about sound and fury.

I don't recommend it, and I think I owe my sci fi book club an apology for choosing it as this month's reading selection.

Sedate Alien Encounter Novel 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Book Review by C. Douglas Baker

Set in 2039-40 A.D., this novel of first contact creates an almost credible near future earth and avoids the cliche of vastly superior aliens swooping down to subjugate humanity and strip its resources. Instead, Jones' aliens live among humans for awhile, cloaking their existence, until a strange emotional relationship between Johnny Guglioli, a UFO chaser, and Agnes/Clevel, an alien residing in Africa, leads to their discovery. Jones spends a lot of time creating our future world doing a credible job on technological and ecological aspects but the socio-political aspects are more alien, and unlikely, than the extraterrestrials. For example, the United States has been overthrown by socialists and are minor players in world politics. Equally unlikely is the lackadaisical response of the Earth's population to the discovery of aliens and the central role played by politically marginal actors in dealing with them.

Johnny Guglioli, the most interesting character, is infected with a "petrovirus" that destroys the substance "blue clay", which evidently has replaced silicon as the key data processing material. Being a former "eejay" or engineering journalist, his occupation is destroyed because he can no longer work with computers or similar machinery because his virus destroys the data processing capabilities of the "blue clay". Having his livelihood ruined he chases UFOs as a hobby, leading to his encounter with Agnes/Clevel, an alien who reveals itself to him. Enter Braemer Wilson, a journalist ostensibly searching for a story who seems to have information about aliens possibly living in Africa. The emotional triangle that develops between Guglioli, the alien Agnes/Clevel, and Braemer Wilson leads down a winding path of human and alien interaction, neither side quite trusting nor understanding the other. Through the emotional attachments of these characters the reader learns about the physical and spiritual components of the aliens. Their interactions raise the intensity level of the story and serve as a microcosm of the meandering search for understanding, frequented by severe misunderstandings, between alien and human throughout the novel.

White Queen's depiction of earth a little over fifty years from now does not seem quite authentic. And even though the aliens attempt to shield themselves from human observation, the groping attempts at mutual understanding seem too restrained for such a momentous event. White Queen is barely saved by its interesting human/alien interactions.

Editorial Review:

Johnny Guglioli used to be a journalist, but his QV virus has rendered him an outcast. In exile from his native America, he encounters an enigmatic young woman. He is convinced she is an alien, and that she is part of a small force sent to reconnoitre Earth.

Editorial Review:

The Blade Runner adventure continues in this dark and stylish novel of nonstop futuristic suspense as ex-blade runner Rick Deckard must cross the most dangerous line of all--the line between human and android.

Rick Deckard had left his career as a blade runner and the gritty, neon-lit labyrinth of L.A. behind, going to the emigrant colony of Mars to live incognito with Sarah Tyrell.  But when a movie about Deckard's life begins shooting, old demons start to surface.  The most bizarre and mysterious is a talking briefcase--the voice belonging to Deckard's most feared adversary.  The briefcase tells Deckard that he's the key to a replicant revolution back on Earth.  Deckard must deliver the briefcase--the secret contents--to the replicants of the outer colonies before he is tracked down and killed.  Is the briefcase lying?  Who is really after Deckard?  And who is the little girl who claims her name is Rachael?  Once again Deckard is on the run from a sinister force determined to destroy him--and already closing in.

Howard would be proud! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Well, if you don't already know who Robert Jordan is please ask whoever it is that has kept you locked in that closet to buy you the entire Wheel of Time series--and this book of course--before inserting you back into that dark, miserable vault. Then read them all voraciously. You will not be disappointed, with this or any of the other many books Mr. Jordan has written. This book in particular is probably the best Conan novel I have read in a great many moons. Why you ask? Well, the plotting is crisp and fast moving, the prose and dialogue effectively create action in the reader's mind, and as all of us RJ sycophants have come to expect, the characterizations are well done and extremely believable. A great book.

Editorial Review:

Conan defies the sorcerous power of the Cult of Doom for the sake of a beautiful young woman known only as Yasbet. From the glory of fabled Aghrapur, capital of Turan, to the demon-haunted wastes of the Blasted Lands, Conan proves himself the greatest hero of a bygone era of high adventure.

Hate detest loath abhor despise, you get my drift yet ? 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If I say it was a terrible abomination good for a feebleminded dolt it will be the nicest thing i'll ever even utter about this insufferable atrocity.

It is a disgrace to RJ legacy I couldn't finish this thing it was so absurd. the pages are not worthy to wipe the bottom of a swampy garbage dump / nuclear waste plant!

I love most of RJ's books but this excuse for one had the most dumb insufferable woman crazy self obsessed character ever. The other character is a supposable self-sufficient self reliable high standard not man crazy woman who chases the main character

if that dose not deter you from reading this thing maybe this will it had a really predictable unimaginative plot that I've ever seen since -ever!!

One reviewer said its for the younger crowd I beg to differ I really don't think its for a young crowed only an immature crowd. As you have no doubt realized if I could give it ZERO STARS I WOULD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Editorial Review:

Before Robert Jordan conquered the bestseller lists with his phenomenally successful Wheel of Time series, he revived the legendary fantasy hero, Conan the Cimmerian. These widely acclaimed adventures introduced the world-famous barbarian to a new generation of readers. This volume contains three tales, CONAN THE DESTROYER, CONAN THE MAGNIFICENT and CONAN THE TRIUMPHANT, all of which feature the storytelling magic and epic splendour that have made Robert Jordan one of the best-loved fantasy authors of all time. This edition also contains CONAN THE INDESTRUCTIBLE: a history of Conan and his times, by L. Sprague de Camp.
