What am I missing here? 2 out of 5 stars.

I really, really wanted to be impressed by "White Queen", because of what I'd read about it. But I found it nearly incomprehensible. When I finally finished reading the book (and it was a challenge to finish it), I sat back, sighed, and quoted myself a little Shakespeare about sound and fury.

I don't recommend it, and I think I owe my sci fi book club an apology for choosing it as this month's reading selection.

Editorial Review:

It's 2038 and the earth has been devastated by tectonic shifts accompanied by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The U.S. has undergone a socialist revolution, retro-viruses are rampant and most technology relies on a powerful organic "clay" instead of microprocessors. When aliens land near American-exile Johnny Guglio's adopted African home, Braemar Wilson, a cutthroat reporter, befriends him to get a jump on the story. Though no one knows the alien's intent, White Queen, an anti-alien group, begins working to undermine human trust. Even as ambassadors from both worlds talk, Braemar and Johnny must work together find themselves in a unique position to uncover the truth. The book won the 1991 James Tiptree Jr. Award.

Super Reader 5 out of 5 stars.

This is another of those 'how the h*ll did she think of this books'?

On the face of it, you might think it would be either a) ludicrous, or b) inordinately soppy.

It ain't either. I don't know how Jones did it, but she did. Even escapes nicking Hendrix' titles.

In a little bit in the future England, things are falling apart. So much so that the musical counterculture again has political clout, and so much so that a rockstar of the violent bent stages a coup.

That does not end well, and this brings to the fore the classic Arthurian trio of Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot.

Or, in this case, Ax Preston (got to have a guitar player, right?), Fiorinda Slater, and Sage Pender.

With a severe energy crisis looming, and a fractured country and war with the muslims coming, and the standard government completely useless these three must try and use their musical and other talents to get everyone through.

With the decline of most technology, the rise of just that bit of mystical power is coming.

Editorial Review:

The Home Secretary of the UK decides to recruit a Countercultural Think Tank of pop stars in order to make the government look too cool to be overthrown. It's just another publicity stunt for the rockers, until the shooting begins. Now, Slater and her friends must find a way to stay alive, and overthrow the dominant social order, while the UK disintegrates under their feet. Will rock & roll's revolutionary promise finally deliver, or will ethnic violence drown hippie idealism in rivers of blood? Either way, the world will never be the same.

Editorial Review:

The subject matter of this collection is varied, but displays Jones’ stance as a practicing SF writer and a feminist; the writing is characterized by both an incisive engagement with the texts and a refusal to dress that engagement in jargon. This very readable book provides insight into the work of one of the UK's most interesting writers and presents strong – sometimes even subversive – views of a range of modern SF and fantasy.

"Gwyneth Jones is one of the two or three most important writers of the current sf boom in the UK... from the evidence in this book it is clear she is also one of the most reflective and readable sf critics working today."—Science Fiction Studies

The Final and the finest volume of the WHITE QUEEN trilogy. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In White Queen the aliens arrived, and not everyone on Earth was pleased. North Wind brought us back to an Aleutian-run Earth. With Phoenix Café, three hundred years have brought us to a nearly decimated Earth, but one with a united purpose -- everyone wants the Aleutians gone, especially the Aleutians. Miss the Aleutian characters from previous books? You're in luck. Or not. Almost no one in Phoenix Café is who or what they appear. That's part of what Jones does best, destroying assumptions and keeping the reader off-balance. Assumptions about sex and sexuality are the first to go.

Phoenix Cafe 5 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. It brings to an end one of the best trilogies I have ever read in SF. The characters are,as ever in a Jones novel, well developed in a 3 dimensional way (no make that 4 dimensions since time is a very important element). The development of the electronic arts scene is mind blowing. The science is convincing. There is rather a lot of weird sex but who's complaining?

I was just sorry when it ended that I would not be meeting these people again.

Editorial Review:

The concluding and most powerful volume in the SF masterpiece, The White Queen trilogy, "Phoenix Cafe" is "a flamboyant, wildly imaginative, and deeply moving novel about (of all things) the aliens among us" ("Washington Post Book World")

one of the best SF books this century 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Fascinating exploration of gender, self, difference and all facets of identity. This book is a sequel to "White Queen", but I don't think the order you read them in matters. Set on earth in a future of poverty, virtual reality and a "gender" war between traditionalists and reformists. Two hundred years of a limited alien presence on earth has not improved communications or relations - the humans think the aliens can read their minds - the aliens regard science and human technology as mysticism and magic and are equally paranoid. Their is a temporary ceasefire and a massacre of the aliens, and a disabled librarian survives with a human guide who may not be trustworthy....

Editorial Review:

In "White Queen", Jones introduced readers to the Aleutians, mysterious aliens whose reproductive process appears to be a method of assuring immortality for the individual. Now, "North Wind" picks up the story of Bella, who may or may not be an alien, and the human Sidney Carton as they search the war-ravaged remains of Europe for the last vestige of human technology that may save civilization.

Life- a thought provoking book 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Life is a novel about a woman, Anna Senoz, as she makes her way through life as a scientist, a wife and a mother. The underlying theme that seemingly connects all these aspects of her life is sexuality. As a college student she freely explores her sexuality, in ways "nice girls" are not supposed to. During this time she winds up in a series of emotionally charged situations. As a wife, she struggles with the loss of a child due to miscarriage and the issue of infidelity. Anna finds herself in a situation familiar to many working women- she must decide how to balance career and family. Furthermore, she deals with the role reversal of having a husband who stays at home and is the primary child care-giver. Lastly, as a scientist she studies human reproduction as well as the underlying genetics of gender. Throughout the book, Anna's research leads up to the discovery of an interesting (though fictional) genetic finding that could have major implications on the definition of gender in our society. Along with this discovery, Anna is forced to deal with skepticism within the scientific community as well as unethical, discouraging mentors. The author chooses to have Anna focus narrowly on the science of her discovery, and as a result glosses over the social implications of such a finding. Although this book is entertaining and has some quality character development, I believe the true value of this book is as a catalyst for discussion. The author briefly touches on a myriad of interesting topics such as gender equality, the definition of gender in society, and even the expectations of marriage-all of which are thought provoking issues.

Editorial Review:

"Life" is a richly textured fictional biography of the brilliant Anna Senoz, a scientist who makes a momentous discovery about the X and Y chromosomes. Anna's discovery provokes widespread sexual rage and impacts cruelly on her career, her marriage, and her child. Ultimately, Anna faces a challenge that the practice of science alone cannot meet.

beautiful prose, fascinating characters. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Too bad the author forgot to write a story. :(
It's really too bad. The premise is wonderful and the writing is great. However the characters are so sterile that I simply don't care about them in the least. This book reminds me of fine crystal. Sharp, beautiful but cold and, in the end without meaning.

The Enchanted World of "Divine Endurance" 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book over 10 years ago and the memory of its beauty still haunts me. The prose was so elegant and so precise that I could taste, smell and feel the sensations being described on paper. The world of a post-nuclear holocaust oppressed by a rigid social and political structure should have been ugly and unpleasant, but quite the opposite--it was enchanting and thrilling.

Three scenes from the book I remember particularly: the richly clad prince wandering among blossoms of ylang-ylang (altho' it's been so long since I read this it may have been jasmine); an erotic encounter between the bandit Derweet (a beautiful woman disguised as a handsome man) and his/her computer-generated servant, the lovely child, Cho ( I felt as tho' I, too, were being ravished); the slipping, sliding journey that Cho takes in search of her brother down the mountains of southeast China that have been melted into glass by nuclear blasts. Nor can I forget the creature that lends her name to the book as its title, "Divine Endurance," the small, brown, wise, tough-talking little cat that accompanies Cho in her travels.

Gwyneth Jones has a subtle imagination and a deep understanding of human nature. You experience this beautiful book rather than merely reading it.

Editorial Review:

The Cat - intelligent, elegant and heartless - and her loving companion Cho together go in search of the race who had left them alone. Cho believes she would be able to put an end to the world's problems. Divine Endurance had promised her that. And it is true: Cho has the power to grant every wish of the human heart. In the Peninsula, Cho and Divine Endurance discover a land of intricate beauty, but it is also a land riddled with corruption, where a desperate struggle is in progress between the people and the indifferent power of their Rulers. Everywhere death creeps in like the tide. And sometimes every wish of the human heart doesn't always work out ...

A drug and a medicine 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I really feel honored to have the pleasure of being the first reader to review this book. I picked it up quite by accident, but though I'm into fiction and scifi, it was quite something yet unexperienced. The tale takes place in an alternate Orient enchantingly described. The story is... intriguing, bizarre and sincere. At times a bit too childlike, but if in reading it you don't win, at least you are guaranteed not to lose!

Editorial Review:

"While Flowerdust is a very exciting action adventure involving drug-running and political turmoil in an exotic, far-future Malaysia, it is also shot through with miracles, giving it a vivid, scary, metaphysical power. Gwyneth Jones is one of the greatest science fiction writers working today."--Kim Stanley Robinson.
