Not for Kids 2 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my daughters, age 8 and 3. I ordered it online without ever having seen a real copy, but instead looking at the first few pages displayed on the Amazon site; specifically the page with the little 5 year-old girl's handwriting - misspellings and all - about capturing her first fairy. I thought it would be a cute children's book that my daughters would enjoy.

Instead, it turned out to be a very adult book dealing with the theme of sexual repression in turn-of-the-century England. For adults, I thought this was a very good book -- for children, totally inappropriate. I would have appreciated this being addressed in the description of the book since I believe it's presented in a kid's book manner.

*spoilers* As a little girl, Angelica Cottington captures fairies in her book, and blames the little mischief-makers for doing things like stealing her stockings and changing the answers on her homework so that by the morning, her sums, which were correct the day before, are all wrong as to get her in trouble with her Governess.

As Cottington grows up, however, the fairies get the blame for her budding (and guilt-ridden) sexuality. At one point, she goes on holiday to Italy where a potential suitor shows up in her hotel room (after her "chaperone" has taken a sleeping drug and passed out in her own room) and what ensues can possibly be construed as a rape -- Cottington intends to say "no" to the man, but one of the fairies flies into her mouth and twists her tongue into saying yes.

Soon afterwards, she flees back to England where the fairies are more proper (touching on the stereotype that Italians are passionate and English are reserved.) When she gets home, however, the English fairies trick her into taking a hallucinogenic drug ("...the sweet nectar slipped around and over my tongue like a liquid glove of exquisite pleasure or pain -- I could not be sure which ..."), and causes her to take off all her clothes and dance around naked in a field. When she wakes up, a clergyman she has known all her life is hovering over her. She confesses to him that the fairies are making her do horrible things, and he admits to her "'Oh Lady Angelica! Yes! They torment me, too! Those little fairies!" .... His eyes had an unnerving intensity about them and he seemed to have dribbled on his purple front. At the same time, he slipped his arms around my waist. ... Your breasts are whiter than a five pound note ..." -- adding the theme of clergy taking sexual advantage of people they are supposed to be helping in their time of need.

This book would possibly make a good study for a college class on the subject of sexuality and history, particularly Western cultural sexual repression in women. But I REALLY think this book description should come with a warning about the content. It is very easy to misjudge it's intended audience based on what is available to look at on the Amazon website.

Editorial Review:

In 1995 Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book was released to an unsuspecting public. Called "an unstoppable phenomenon" by its publisher, it became an immediate international best-seller. Now 2005 can be named the Year of Lady Cottington with the 10th anniversary of the publication that first exposed the world to the science of fairy exploration.

This volume records in authentic facsimile the latest incarnation of this notorious book along with eight additional pages and enhanced artwork throughout, virtually overflowing with freshly flattened fairies. Former Monty Python member Terry Jones and artist Brian Froud provide a new introduction to place the book in its proper perspective, offering insight into the book's often maligned historic relevance. As a bonus, included is an incriminating DVD showing rare film footage of the elderly Lady Cottington in her garden demonstrating her fairy-squashing technique, as well as a photo gallery, desktop wallpaper, and screensavers.

amazing artwork 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my girlfriend, that loved it when she was little, but lost the book in a moving.

This book is really charming and very imaginative. The explanations and names of the creatures are very amusing, the illustrations are amazing, and the talent of the author shows.

However, it is more a goblin catalog than a fantasy book or novel, so be sure of what you are buying. It is an artbook, not a tale or a novel. It can be enjoyed anyway by young and old, I think, but it is what it is.

Editorial Review:

In 1986, the magical fantasy movie Labyrinth introduced the world to a set of unforgettable goblins from the minds of Jim Henson and Brian Froud. Not only has the film become a classic with a huge cult following, but Brian Froud’s long out- of-print book about the malevolent and cantankerous goblins—packed with his brilliant drawings and paintings—has achieved similar cult status.

Now Abrams is proudly reissuing The Goblins of Labyrinth in a brand-new 20th Anniversary Edition. With even more artwork than the original and a new afterword from Brian Froud, this mesmerizing work, like Froud’s The World of The Dark Crystal, is a must-have for collectors and Brian Froud fans everywhere.

Editorial Review:

Arguably the greatest collaboration in the whole history of comedy!

Bestselling author Douglas Adams wrote the storyline based on his CD-ROM game of the same name (as this novel, not as him, obviously).

Terry Jones of Monty Python wrote the book. In the nude! Parents be warned! Most of the words in this book were written by a naked man!

So. You want to argue with that? All right, we give in.

Starship Titanic is the greatest, most fabulous, most technologically advanced interstellar cruise line ever built. It is like a cross between the Queen Mary, the Chrysler Building, Tutankhamen's tomb, and Venice. Furthermore, it cannot possibly go wrong. . . .

Sadly, however, seconds after its launch it undergoes SMEF, or Spontaneous Massive Existence Failure. And disappears.

Except, everything's got to be somewhere.

Coming home that night, on a little known planet called Earth, Dan and Lucy Gibson find something very large and very, very shiny sticking into their house. . .

Rather inventive 5 out of 5 stars.

Hilarious and all-together head-scratching, as you find yourself realizing they're talking about something you've been wondering about all along. You may have thought you were the only one undergoing the cruel and unusual punishment of these noxious fumes and stains, but here you find you are not alone... If you're going to read this aloud as a bed-time book or as a book of quotations, you are required by law to read it aloud with an English accent. If you cannot speak with an English accent or if it is terrible beyond measure, please read silently. Don't even mouth the words as you read. If by chance, you meet someone who is talking about smells and stains in a bad English accent, smack him. If he's bigger than you, you may let him off with a warning...or politely kick him and run, because big guys take longer to build up the inertia to accelerate than little guys. If he doesn't catch you and is breathing heavily, then run up to him and smack him. That should get the point across.

Adorable! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was lucky enough to attend a screening where Terry Jones read these stories aloud to an audience, and adults laughed as much as the children. I've been looking for this book to buy to read my nieces and nephews ever since. Very silly, unpredictable stories that kids will want to hear again and again.

Good stories, but some repeats 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is chockful of fun, wacky, and slightly twisted stories. One item to note, all the Terry Jones stories in the "Bedtime Stories" volume are included in this book. We have "Bedtime Stories" and love it -- my three year old especially loves looking at the great and plentiful illustrations while listening to the stories. "Fairy Tales and Fantastic Stories" has far fewer illustrations (only one or two per story), making it less interesting for younger ones. Still, it's a worthy purchase and one that we'll read for years to come.

Editorial Review:

How slow is an ogre? How do you get rid of a dragon if it’s on your roof? Would you go off with a fly-by-night? And who was the funniest dog in the world? These are a few of the important questions that are answered in this book. Terry Jones’s fairy tales take readers to strange lands and fabulous kingdoms where they will find mystery and magic, sadness and silliness, and more adventures than they will know what to do with.

Absolutely a must have for fans! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you liked the movie, then you'll love this book. I bought a mint condition copy for about seventy dollars last year, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Like the movie, the book tells of a young girl draw into a fantasy world by her own overactive imagination in order to save her little brother, who has been stolen by the goblin king, who says he is only seeking favor in her eyes, and seems to have fallen in love with her.

The book follows the storyline of the movie exactly, but offers more insight into the characters thoughts and actions. I can remember in particular that the ballroom scene was quite staggeringly more descriptive. A wonderful book, worth the price; espescially if you can find one in good condition.

transporting you to another dimension 5 out of 5 stars.

gosh, i was six when i first saw the movie! now that i'm eighteen makes no difference how i love this enchanting story.

smith brings the story up to another level, as he dwelves deeper into sarah's feelings... and also jareth's. the chemistry between the two is undeniable. i would like to think that in another situation both of them would be together, albeit the fact that she's mortal and he a goblin prince.

smith's writing is of course, very detailed and deep, and he tries to explain all the different meanings and reads between the lines of the movie. he has us vying for the king, and rooting for the good guys, too. he makes us want jareth to have a happy ending, and perhaps one with sarah. he makes us want to see the movie.

well, maybe the movie IS old, and the special effects kind of horrid by today's standards, but truth be, enchantments are timeless.

Hidden Turnings 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Hidden Turnings, edited and assembeled by Diana Wayne-Jones, is a teriffic collection of short stories mostly in the science-fiction, or fantasy genre. This book contains short stories such as Fifty-Fafty, The Master (my personal favorite), and many more. I only gave this book three stars because although I liked Hidden Turnings, it was an average book, with not many exceptional features. It wasn't written that well, and I found that many of the characters lacked emotion, making some of the stories somewhat borring. This book was also just a bit below my reading and interrest level. It was probably for the 10 to 13 year old age group.
Over all though, this was a good book and you should consider reading it.

Not Froud's best 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Don't expect the breathtaking paintings and art found in most of Brian Froud's books--the Goblin Companion is mainly full of quick sketches and gritty ink-and-watercolor drawings, and I found the art rather mediocre.

Great book, but rather odd... 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

A splendid blend of hilarious text and even-more-hilarious art, The Goblin Companion is great for the accomplished goblinologist, on for the dedicated fan of the movie Labyrinth.

Another awesome accomplishment Brian!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I discovered this book at a small store in England, and instantly fell in love. On the plane back here, I read the whole thing twice. It is very interesting and often funny!! If you loved Good Faeries/Bad Faeries (or vice versa) you'll LOVE this book!!

Editorial Review:

Earthy, enigmatic, and--until now--elusive, the goblin is little known and even less well understood. Thanks to Brian Froud's discovery of the notebooks of Dashe, a goblin portraitist, this rare breed is now an open book. This is a definitive, profusely illustrated field guide to the goblin world, annotated by Terry Jones, Monty Python professor emeritus of Obscure, Absurd and Truly Hilarious Arts. Full-color illustrations.
