Clarifies this Enigmatic symphonist 5 out of 5 stars.

Shame this is out of print. Simpson was annotator, promoter at The BBC. He is a composer himself of large scale symphonies.

Bruckner has long been an enigmatic creator, a late bloomer, spending years in pedagogical subjection of counterpoint. And his oefish, awkward demeanor gave a false impression to those who surrounded him, usually less talented unclairvoyant scholars who sought the necessity to revise his symphonies. Simpson here scours these giant symphonic boulders one by one, revealing where a great rupture takes place, where Bruckner's symphonic vision begins to look outward, beginning with the Fifth Symphony. Although the D-minor Third begins this transmogrification of vision. Bruckner looked well beyond the shadow of Beethoven, not utilizing that aesthetic pallette of pent up momentums, and overwrought festering movements that get resolved. Instead the Bruckner movement in fact doesn't move, there is no forward moving implication, we must simply withstand the overbearing presence of each movement in its own right, within its own oceanic spaces. Simpson is a good writer and brings some literary image to the outside gestural features, as his machine-like repetitive conconctions, its moments which simply begin and end mindlessly at times,as the various variegated Scherzi. You need the score I found to read Simpson for he does drag us through these symphonies as a callable narrative, moment to moment, step by step,(not quite note for note) inch by inch. This can get tedious, but that is what was the usual fare of musical analysis. Now hopefully there are those essays which introduce more social and political dimensions to the creation of art.

Editorial Review:

This is a revised and expanded edition of Robert Simpson's study, first published in 1967, of Bruckner's music. It includes additional material on the 3rd, 4th and 8th symphonies, whose original versions have only recently become available, and a new chapter on the String Quintet. Dr Simpson, himself a composer, is also the author of "Carl Nielsen, Symphonist" and the BBC music guide, "Beethoven Symphonies".

Sixteen essays by leading experts introduce the lay reader to issues that have concerned scholars over the past twenty years regarding Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). They provide an introduction to the composer's life and works, covering such problematic areas as his relationship to Vienna; the numerous editions of his symphonies; performing styles; and his appropriation by the Nazis during the Third Reich. They also consider the extent to which his Catholicism shaped not just his religious music but his symphonies as well.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive study treats the wind works of Anton Bruckner as a complete genre and uses them to illustrate how the composer evolved in style throughout his career. A major nineteenth-century composer, organist, and church musician, Bruckner's compositional style changed dramatically in the early 1860s, dividing his career into two distinct parts. During his early career he immersed himself in the study of traditional musical principles including form, harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration. The second phase of his career, in which he composed the symphonies upon which much of his current reputation rests, was marked by his experimental approaches to harmony and tonality. Many of his early compositions exhibit landmarks of his later style. The wind instrument pieces incorporate the best aspects of both of Bruckner's styles and reflect the progress of his professional life. Organized chronologically, the music is studied and classified within set time periods. Each wind work of a particular period is reviewed according to the historical circumstances contributing to its creation, its specific musical content, and its success as a musical work in relation to wind music and specifically to Bruckner's development. The analyses of Bruckner's compositions are enhanced by musical examples throughout the text.

A Serious Disappointment 2 out of 5 stars.

In view of the lack of modern books on this subject, and the failure to reprint the standard (and admirable) biographies, this monument of modern academic P & P (pedantry and pedagogy) is seriously disappointing. If you are seeking enlightenment about this motivation and methods of this most sublime of composers --- look elsewhere. This is a view through a microscope of the vast Brucknerian universe. You will, however, get a glimpse of current efforts to achieve tenure in academe. The standard works (in addition to Simpson, Schoenzeler, and Doernberg, perhaps the recent compilation by Stephen Johnson)remain essential --- so search the used book sites.

Editorial Review:

This volume contains historical and analytical essays on Anton Bruckner and his music. For the past century the principal concerns of scholars of Bruckner's music have been his personal and musical relationship with Wagner, editorial problems in his scores, his enigmatic personality, and the assessment of his monumental late-nineteenth-century style. The studies in this volume consider these issues in the light of the latest research. Of interest to the lay person will be the discussions of the manner in which politics and special interests have affected the dissemination and perception of Bruckner's music, particularly in Nazi Germany.

An uninspired thesis retread 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The substantive content of this slender volume is in absolute contrast to the greatness of this monumental symphony, arguably the most imposing symphony of the second half of the 19th century. The small book still manages to be stuffed with filling, but of the wrong kind: intricate and tedious academic harmonic analyses and self-proclaimed 'controversial' findings with regard to the various editions of the symphony. Thus, despite its short length, the book overstays its welcome by failing to balance its technical minutiae with any larger musical issues such as where the symphony could proceed after Wagner or the sublime solution of Bruckner. All-in-all, it resembles an unfocussed and undigested doctoral thesis (which doubtless was its unfortunate genesis). IMHO, one of the weaker titles in the otherwise fine Cambridge Press series, and a disappointment for those hoping for a long-overdue addition to the sadly empty bookshelf on this extraordinary composer.

Editorial Review:

Anton Bruckner's Eighth Symphony (1890), one of the last of the great Romantic symphonies, is a grandly complex masterpiece. This book explores this many-faceted work from several angles. It documents the complicated and often misunderstood history of the symphony's composition and revision and provides an accessible guide to its musical design. It demonstrates, by means of a study of well-known recordings, how performance styles have evolved in this century. It also revisits the conventional wisdom about the various versions and editions of the symphony and comes to some provocative new conclusions.

Editorial Review:

Celebrating its 100th anniversary, this extraordinary series continues to amaze and captivate its readers with detailed insight into the lives and work of music's geniuses. Unlike other composer biographies that focus narrowly on the music, this series explores the personal history of each composer and the social context surrounding the music. In a precise, engaging, and authoritative manner, each volume combines a vivid portrait of the master musicians' inspirations, influences, life experiences, even their weaknesses, with an accessible discussion of their work-all in roughly 300 pages. Further, each volume offers superb reference material, including a detailed life and times chronology, a complete list of works, a personalia glossary highlighting the important people in the composer's life, and a select bibliography. Under the supervision of music expert and series general editor Stanley Sadie, Master Musicians will certainly proceed to delight music scholars, serious musicians, and all music lovers for another hundred years.
This particular volume contains a vivid account of Bruckner's struggles and achievements both in his personal life and in his creative career. The later chapters cover each of his works in detail, from the mighty span of the mature symphonies to the smallest of his undeservedly neglected motets. As well, the characteristic features of his art and his strikingly individual conception of mass and symphony are discussed and set alongside the works of his contemporaries.
