This is one of the best book I've read and I would definately recommend it. The ending is very surprising and original - not what you expect. Too bad this book cannot be brought in the UK though. Can't wait to read the sequel.

Couldn't Put It Down! 5 out of 5 stars.

Superbly written, exciting depiction of a magical yet increasingly scientific world. The first of a wonderful series, this book entices you to become part of the experiences of the war in Strand. The search for unicorns brings not only a possible weapon to the magical kingdoms, but also hope for the lone humans on the planet. The unicorns have much to teach the humans, but first their lives must be saved. Now the humans only have to convince the unicorns to help them.

The book was difficult to put down, in fact I found myself flying through it to continue on with the series. Keep in mind, that you too will soon have the entire series on your bookshelf so you can read the adventures again and a again.

Editorial Review:

In a final, desperate attempt to save the empire of the Strand, Mage Jerrof and Lady Marianna embark on a perilous quest in search of the mythical unicorn. Reissue.

disappointed 2 out of 5 stars.

I read several of John Lee's Unicorn books before finally giving up on the series. The concept of these novels was very interesting - a mideval type society with magicians and all the like, battling a non-human species that inhabits their own planet. The humans and other sedinent creatures are having trouble co-existing, and enter a war to eliminate each other.

Meanwhile, a trio of Unicorns with some telepathic type abilities hook up with one of the mages, and the humans view these unicorns as the key to their success. The Unicorns can also travel through space, and bring their human friend to another planet, perhaps in hopes of helping win the war?

Overall, the series had some interesting concepts and the battle scenes were graphic (for those who like war stories). However, the characters were VERY VERY dry (even depressing), and I found myself barely able to concentrate on the books, and finally gave up. These books desperately needed a little more humor or at least humanity to its dour characters.

Editorial Review:

Jarrod Courtak, Mage and friend of the Unicorns, faces new challenges when the unicorns take their leave and threats of new conflicts loom. Original.

Editorial Review:

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace...only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A Feast for Crows

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears....With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist--or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces--some familiar, others only just appearing--are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes...and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests--but only a few are the survivors.

I've read the entire Unicorn series, and the only thing I didn't like about it was that it ended. I keep looking for more books by John Lee. I hope he writes a new series, or continues the Unicorn saga.

Editorial Review:

Darius of Gwyndryth works to save the Eastern Front, while his daughter Marianna accompanies a gawky young magician on the only journey that can save them: the quest for the unicorns. Reissue.

unicorns? FIGHTING?!?!?! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Can you imagine a more horrifyingly uncute apocalypse? Shining hoof pitted against glimmering horn - terrors, horrors, unHOLY. I mean, the dialogue is riveting ("Lt. Fetlock, Ms. Minnie-mae Diamond Sparkles has been hit by peppermint shrapnel!!! Awaiting instructions, SIR!"), but if you are easily disturbed, stay away from this violent romp; it will haunt you in your dreams. I woke up several nights running, upon finishing the saga, drenched in fear, clutching my unicorn pillow to my chest so tightly that his (Lycobus') faux-gem eye left an indent in my bosom. Not for the faint of heart, but 'heart'-ily recommended!

Young magician Jarrod Courtak and his sometimes unwilling companion, Marianna of Gwyndryth, are assisted by a legendary family of unicorns as they attempt to save the world of Strand and change the course of history. Reprint. LJ. VY.

Welcome to Apocalyptic Horror "Light" 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This novel is a snappily-written, funny, thought-provoking read... especially if the reader is a teenager or "young adult" - this book's intended audience. With that in mind, I highly recommend this to that category of reader.

If, however, you are a "not so young anymore" adult, you'll probably find yourself doing what I did as I read: asking Enthoven to get a little more down and dirty and to tone down the humor a bit. For instance, it's one thing have the stereotypical idiot commando leader, gonzo to the point of insanity over "the mission"... it's quite another to let said leader get so many lines in a story that really barely even needs him.

The ironic tone that Enthoven uses for his protagonist, Jack, is superb; don't get me wrong. The writing really is excellent. But I found myself wanting Jack to be - well, a little less of a sarcastic teenager and a lot more of a ... well, of what he finally becomes in the end. That's actually a good indication of the skill that Enthoven possesses: he definitely hooked me with a great character with a strong voice that I was rooting for, from beginning to end.

Lastly, regarding the existential stuff, I found myself fascinated with the depiction of hell and its denizens. It wasn't offensive to my sensibilities in the least to see God's "real job", and frankly I found myself often laughing at the ways in which the residents of hell were often laughing at "us". I think my own beliefs are solid enough to withstand a few hours of entertainment with a book as imaginative and as fun as this one!

Editorial Review:

Jack’s best mate, Charlie, has always been effortlessly cool. When Charlie wakes up one day and finds a mysterious, moving black tattoo on his back, it’s a clear sign that he’s even cooler than Jack thought. To top it off, Charlie has got super powers also.
Or does he?
Jack soon learns the terrifying truth: Charlie’s incredible powers come from an age-old demon called the Scourge, who is using Charlie to bring about its evil master plan.
When the Scourge vanishes with Charlie, Jack and Esme, a girl with super powers of her own, follow their friend from the streets of London into Hell itself, where they face horrors that may well cost them their lives.
