Being Part of Liaden Universe is Saving Grace 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

If it weren't for its inclusion in a great series, this book would be a dud for me.

Rather than reading the Liaden books in the order they were published, I've been able to read them in chronological order (meaning Local Custom was my first).

I've enjoyed my run through the books, but I think that things are starting to get a little predictable by the installment of Agent of Change. It's a standard forumla: bad-ass Liaden dude suddenly discovers his softer side when, lo and behold, he discovers the "perfect woman." By this point, I see the plot heading this way and I just go "yawn."

The complaint about the characters I've seen mentioned before is that the male characters are a little overly sensitive in the efforts to make them, in my opinion, more appealing to the female audience. Able and willing to defend their woman to the end of the world, but soft and sensitive enough to want to "life-mate" and shout their affections from the rooftops. If I ever find a man half as caring and romantic as these characters I'll be the luckiest woman in the entire world. This deviation from what seems normal detracts from enjoyment, at least for me. They are cookie-cutter versions of the cliche "perfect man." And the women, while typically bold and decisive in their own rights, tend to suffer the "damsel in distress" plot twist at some point in the story - and I mean every one (of the main female characters).

I also think the "romance" element is extremely over-played. Now, I know this is space opera and there's supposed to be lovey-dovey elements, but I feel like it's not developed properly. The characters start falling in love and getting married just weeks after being introduced. It's a little unbelievable, especially in this book where I feel like Val Con and Miri were underdeveloped. I never got a feel for these characters the way I did in books like Scout's Progress (my favorite, thus far) and even Conflict of Honors. They hardly trust each other to start out with, but a few weeks later: boy gives girl expensive present of necklance and rings and - gasp - they're in love? Sorry folks, it's just a little hard to swallow.

However, on the good side (and there's plenty of good for all my complaining) the Liaden society is one of the best I've ever seen created. It's absolutely fascinating and the political themes foster extremely interesting situations and conflicts. The dialogue, as well, throughout the series, is consistently smart and sharp. Something to be admired and enjoyed. There are really good characters (Priscilla, Shan, Daav) that I really took to heart.

So, on a whole, the series is worth checking out. While this particular installment left me about as bored as Local Custom did, I hold faith in the series' improvment along the timeline. Val Con and Miri don't impress me what-so-ever, but that may just be because I'm comparing them to the team of Shan (who is massively entertaining on his own) and Priscilla or Daav and Aelianna.

Editorial Review:

Fleeing the scene of his latest mission, Val Con yos'Phelium finds himself saving the life of ex-mercenary Miri Robertson, a young Tarren on the run from interplanetary assassins. Thrown together by circumstances, Val Con and Miri struggle to elude their enemies and stay alive without slaying each other-or surrendering to the unexpected passion that flares between them.

Editorial Review:

A Letter from Anne McCaffrey about Crystal Dragon:

Every now and then you come across an author, or in this case, a pair, who write exactly what you want to read, the characters and personalities that make you enjoy meeting them. Apart from my passion for Kim by Rudyard Kipling, I had read some authors whose books I would buy the moment they came on sale (thanks to Amazon’s policy and pre-ordering facility) and then there are the precious few who sit in honor on my comfort shelf. The books I reach for when something in life has become intolerable. And I rediscover the joy that had infused me at the first reading. Such a book was "Agent of Change" first published by Del Rey. When I had finished, hungering for more, I got in touch with Shelly Shapiro, my editor at Del Rey and, prayers answered, she had the manuscript for "Conflict of Honors" on her desk. I beseeched her to send me a copy asap…my hunger for more of the Liaden Universe so intense. She did. However, I had to wait for the third of that first series: "Carpe Diem!"

I found out that Steve and Sharon had published chap books on the Liaden universe, Val Con and Miri Roberson, Shan yos ‘Galan and Priscilla. Sharon and Steve are always throwing you quips like that and reading them is all the more enjoyable for them. So I bought those as they were published. Some of them are now also published in hard cover. The only trouble with the chap books is that while they sort out one problem, or elaborate on a special character, they are not very long.

Then I discovered that Meisha Merlin was going to continue the series. I was delighted to get a hard-cover of "Partners in Necessity" which is the three single titles mentioned above…then we have more good chunks of Liaden in "Pilot’s Choice" which contains the two titles "Local Custom" and "Scout’s Progress". Following them, is "Plan B", which has the most devious plot and then on to "I Dare". Which is gorgeous. And then, for dessert, "Balance of Trade"…and the tales of "Low Port".

What fascinates me most about Lee and Miller as a team is how well blended they are, with a structured society that is almost Chinese in its adherence to custom…the graciousness of the language is always a delight (something I wish I had phrased as aptly). I can certainly see the Tree in my mind’s eye, spreading its ancient leaves over the valley it protects and the people it cherishes. And now these authors have come up with another pair of characters and a new chapter in the history of Liaden…"Crystal Soldier". Better yet, it says on the title page Book One of the Great Migration Duology. So, Happy Day, it means another book is coming "Crystal Dragon". Hurrrah. The hero is M. Jela Granthor’s Guards, and the heroine is Cantra: names which will have significance to those who have already entered the magic of Liaden.

I rarely rave on and on about stories, but I am devoted to Lee and Miller novels and stories. Start at the beginning, dear reader, and you will be rewarded with a sanctuary you can escape to, as I do when this world we’re stuck with is impossible to endure.

I was waiting for this book, but- 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I was wanting to see how the Liaden universe had began, but I really didn't get many answers from this book. The plotting is not up to the authors usual pace, and the characters are wooden. I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn't. I will skip the sequel, and wait for the authors to come back to their liaden roots.

Science fiction 4 out of 5 stars.

This story was good and the characters well developed. It kept my interest and provoked interesting thought.

Liaden Universe Prequel 5 out of 5 stars.

If you have read any of the earlier books, you have seen references to Jela's Tree - a tree with illusions of mysticism. Get to the root of the mystery in this novel of the early years of the Liaden Universe when Jela first encountered the tree. As always, the authors deliver great characters and intriguing plot lines. This book and its conclusion, Crystal Dragon, are well worth the price!

Editorial Review:

M. Jela Granthor's Guard is a soldier who was born to be a soldier, a soldier whose genes were selected before birth, whose life was chosen for him as one of service and dedication.

Cantra yos'Phelium is an ace pilot and a thoroughgoing rogue. She trades the dark and the gray markets along the war-torn Rim, running solo, with an eye on her own profit.

When fate casts them together, they form an unlikely-and uncomfortable-alliance, the soldier intent on his mission, the pirate intent on her survival...

A little too much talking not enough action 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I enjoy sci-fi with good character development and t I was intrigued by Lee's world. It seemed well thought out, great characters and excellent dialog. I really enjoyed the character of Shan but was lukewarm about Priscilla the heroine. She seemed way too much of a victim for my tastes. When she's not getting harassed by co-workers, she's getting beatup by thugs while on shoreleave. I guess I like my heroines more kick @ss.

I also admit that I didn't find the romance that believable. Priscilla is bi-sexual which is fine by me but her relationships lack passion. I just didn't care whether the character got her happy ending or not. She seemed so blase about her relationships that there was no tension.

The final straw for me was just how much dialog was in this book. Pages and pages of characters sharing their feelings and chatting about events, rather than experiencing them. I like well-written dialog but parts of this novel read like a script. I found my mind drifting after a while and found it difficult to remember which character was speaking.

2 stars. Started off great, but Priscilla the prozac princess did not cut it for me. I like my heroines tougher and more involved in the story.

Editorial Review:

In the third novel of the Liaden Universe, Priscilla Delacroix is betrayed and abandoned by her shipmates. But confronting the crew will be far easier-and safer-than confronting the demons of her past.

Editorial Review:

Whether you love Bujold's A Civil Campaign, McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series, or classics like The Prisoner of Zenda, you owe it to yourself to grab Partners in Necessity. You'll see why Sharon Lee and Steve Miller have gained devoted fans since the first three Liaden novels (collected here) first appeared; they helped bring the series back with the publication of Plan B 11 years after its debut. This is swashbuckling space opera at its finest, a blend of adventure, romance, humor, and terrific world building.

Meet Priscilla Delacroix y Mendoza, betrayed and stranded on a backward world by the Liaden trader she served as cargo master. Fortunately, another Liaden ship, Dutiful Passage, makes orbit and she applies for work. The captain, Shan yos'Galen, also has accounts to settle with Priscilla's former employers, and "among Liadens, revenge is something of an art form." Conflict of Honors is their story. In Agent of Change, Val Con yos'Phelium, Shan's cousin and foster brother, comes to the aid of Miri Robertson, former mercenary and bodyguard, who's being hunted by an interstellar crime cartel. Once a First-in Scout, he's become a spy for Liad, programmed to play the odds ruthlessly. He's just committed a murder. They flee together, aided by Edger, an alien shaped like a turtle. His "four-hundred pound bottle-green frame" is impressive to the Clans of Men, as are the beautiful, deadly knives of his people. He's considered a bit hasty by colleagues, but his appreciation of music is keen and he regards Val Con as a brother. In Carpe Diem, the stories of Val Con and Miri, and Shan and Priscilla come together and the story of Clan Korval, to which Shan and Val Con belong, unfolds further.

Once you've sampled Lee and Miller's Liaden Universe, you'll be delighted that Plan B and Pilot's Choice are available now, with I Dare still to come. Join SF and fantasy writers from Anne McCaffrey to Barry Longyear in badgering them for more. --Nona Vero

Compelling Book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Local Custom, set in the Liaden Universe created by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller is a Science Fiction Book and a Romance Novel. Beyond that, it is an exploration of what happens when two cultures collide. Er Thom is a Master Trader from Clan Korval of Liaden. It is his duty to his clan to find a suitable Liaden bride and produce an heir, but he has fallen in love with Terran Anne Davis. For the sake of his clan, he leaves and disappears from her life until several years later he shows up and learns during that their brief liason in the past, he fathered her son.

Liaden custom demands that the little boy be taken to Liaden and presented as his heir, but Anne is resistant. She is happy with her life, and had moved on from the feelings she had for Er Thom years ago. Anne is a music scholar, however, and that is one thing that draws her to Liaden. Once there, she is torn between the efforts of Er Thom and his family to assimilate her and her little boy.

This book was a definite page turner. I couldn't put it down. The atrraction between Er Thom and Anne is constantly present, growing stronger as the novel progresses, and the story of the alien, Liaden society is compellingly detailed.

This book is a terrific introduction to the Liaden Universe! 5 stars!

Editorial Review:

The first of the seven books set in the Liaden Universe tells a rich and sweeping story of warring families and star-crossed lovers in a fantastic, other-world galaxy.

Editorial Review:

Faliance is a world where there is traffic and trade between humans and Fey, elflike beings who control powerful magic. Lord Altimere is powerful, both in influence and in magic. The former because he is the Queen’s most trusted advisor—and, if his plans succeed, her consort as well. The latter because of a secret. He has abducted a human, Rebecca Beauvelley, middle child of the Earl of Barimuir. Even overlooking her withered left arm, she is not a beauty in the sight of humans, but the Fey are attracted to the auras of humans, and Rebecca’s exceeds even the most comely of human auras by a factor of ten. An enchanted collar which Altimere has placed around her neck makes her unable to resist obeying his orders. And each time she has an affair, carefully arranged by Altimere, with one of the Fey, some of their magical power passes through her to Altimere. So it was until Altimere was absent from the court, and Lady Sian of Sea Edge, one of the Queen’s cousins, came for a visit, discovered that Rebecca was secretly a prisoner in her own mind, and freed her of Altimere’s compulsion. Unfortunately, even now that both the Queen and Lady Sian know of Lord Altimere’s plot, he may be too powerful for anything but a large number of other Fey, pooling their magical power, to bring to justice—and since getting Fey to act in concert is like herding cats, the Queen will need some time to cajole and persuade enough of her allies. Iin the meantime, Rebecca must be protected from Altimere—and from herself. She is determined to return home, which cannot yet be permitted. And if she cannot go home, she is even more determined to kill herself!

THe book was a little too long even though its short. I read it, but did not really enjoy it. I am hoping when I re-read it in a couple of months I will find it more interesting.

This is the next great series by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller! 5 out of 5 stars.

No, The Tomorrow Log isn't set in the Liaden Universe. But don't let that stop you from mining the riches you'll find in this book. The Tomorrow Log is replete with relentless excitement, derring-do exploits, mystical elements, an understated romance, and the authors' trademark diverse socio/cultural touches.

Gem ser'Edreth is an electronics ace by nature and an independent thief by trade. He has very few ties to anyone and prefers to exist on the fringes of civilization, under the radar of the law. His preferred companions are his tiny robotic spider constructs, which are invaluable in reconnoitering and infiltrating many potential "jobs."

Gem's status quo changes when the beautiful and lethal Corbinye Faztherot - scout, mediator, and assassin for the GenerationShip Gardenspot - shows up and claims kinship with Gem (they're cousins) and tells him that he is the long-lost Captain predicted in the Tomorrow Log to steer the Gardenspot past its greatest peril and then onward to bigger and better things for Ship and Crew. But Gem dismisses her, an act which he also repeats time and again with Lady Belaconto, a chieftain of the planetary crime syndicate, who wants to commission Gem into stealing a legendary artifact in order to control the trade of a rare drug.

The tension is ratcheted up when Belaconto sniffs out Gem's familial ties with Corbinye and has her kidnapped and held as hostage until Gem undertakes and completes her commission. Little does Gem realize that the theft of the mystical Bindalche Trident will catapult him and Corbinye into a rousing, high-stakes adventure foretold by a prophecy centuries past.

This is the first entry in the Gem ser'Edreth series. The upcoming sequel is titled Web of the Trident, which hopefully will be out soon (the authors' blog says maybe around April/May 2007?). As usual, Sharon Lee & Steve Miller make for a wonderful, highly entertaining read. I was totally engrossed in The Tomorrow Log and finished it in one sitting. This book found me marvelling once again at the authors' talent for intricate world-building. Given time, Gem's universe might prove to be as entrancing as the Liaden Universe. Gem and Corbinye turn out to be as captivating, resourceful and heroic as Val Con and Miri. They certainly ingratiate themselves with the reader. Gem's cute techno-spiders make good supporting players, as Lee & Miller invest them with almost human characteristics. The valiant golden-eyed Spider Number Fifteen may well be my favorite secondary character.

This is a very promising start to what hopefully will be a memorable series. It's similar to the Liaden Universe in terms of its space opera scope and sensibilities. But at this juncture, The Tomorrow Log doesn't resonate as well with the fans. But, give it time...Anyways, four and a half stars.

Editorial Review:

Freelance thief Gem ser'Edreth makes the calculated mistake of turning down a commission from the local crime boss. Gem's hidden past proves an unexpected liability as his plans to leave the planet go catastrophically awry. Suddenly embroiled in interplanetary politics, and a potential interstellar war, in possession of a Trident, a mysterious, ancient object of power and an unwanted cousin, Gem discovers that the Trident may hold the key to his salvation-or his undoing.

Editorial Review:

How can a series with terrific character development, witty dialogue, and high adventure fail? Lee, Miller, and dedicated fans refused to believe it could, and after 10 years, the Liaden Universe has returned from book limbo! If you can find them, look for other books in the series: Partners in Necessity, an omnibus of the first three novels, another omnibus containing two prequels, and the fifth book, I Dare. But feel free to start here: Plan B stands alone, though previous books provide rich back-story.

Meet Val Con yos'Phelium of Clan Korval. Val Con was once an "agent of change": recruited by Liad's Department of Interior (DOI) and redesigned--his memories blocked, his emotions suppressed--into a precision killing device. Val Con's sanity was saved by his lifemate, Miri Robertson. She's a half-Terran former mercenary sergeant even shorter than Val Con, and almost as deadly in combat. Miri also has Liaden dramliza (wizard) blood from her mother's family, Clan Erob. In Liaden society, one's melant'i (roughly: reputation, or face) is preserved by appropriate speech and behavior, including honor duels when a Balance is owed. Miri is nervous but Val Con says: "'Together, cha'trez, we are--' he bent his head, put his mouth next to her ear and breathed '--hell on wheels.'"

DOI has plotted to destroy Korval; Korval now invokes Plan B: retreat strategically, trust no one, prepare for all-out war. Val Con and Miri are trapped by an invasion force of the militaristic Yxtrang as they await Val Con's foster siblings, who are arming the clan. And of course their adopted Clutch brothers, Edger and Sheather, who resemble giant turtles, are also on their way. Somewhat more slowly. Can everybody stay alive long enough to reunite?

If you love Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan books, visit Liad. This is space opera at its best. --Nona Vero

Ah! the Pleasures of the Liaden Universe 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

One of the best ways to help a reader understand a strange culture is to plunk an outsider down in the middle of it and observe what happens. In Balance of Trade, Sharon Lee and Steve Miller put Assistant Trader Jethri Gobelyn, the youngest member of the crew of a Terran trade ship, right in the middle of Liaden culture by apprenticing him to Master Trader ven'Deelin.

Suddenly he is plunged into a totally new world where an incorrect bow can cause extreme offense. Jethri has always been fascinated by Liaden culture, however, and takes to his new world with alacrity.

While Jethri is an interesting character, the book at times seems to lose focus, and there are some things that are just never really explained to satisfaction. Why does Jethri's birth mother hate him so much? What on earth is that business at the end regarding the salvage cargo about? I feel as though I caught about two thirds of what was actually going on, the rest was much too obscure. Jethri, himself, did not completely understand the events that unfolded around him and, I must confess, neither did I.

However, the plot and characters are compelling enough to make this a very fun read. Young Jethri is a well drawn character and I'd like to see more of him.

Editorial Review:

Assistant Trader Jethri Gobelyn was an honest, hardworking young man who knew a lot about living onboard his family's space-going trade ship; something about trade, finance, and risk-taking; and a little bit about Liadens. It was, oddly enough, the little bit he knew about Liadens that seemed like it might be enough to make his family's fortune, and his own, too. In short order, however, Jethri Gobelyn was about to find out a lot more about Liadens... like how far they might go to protect their name and reputation. Like the myriad of things one might say-intentionally or not-with a single bow. Like what it would take to make a Liaden trade-ship crew trash a bar. Like how hard it is to say "I'm sorry!" in Liaden. Pretty soon it was clear that as little as he knew about Liadens, he knew far less about himself. With his very existence a threat to the balance of trade, Jethri Gobelyn needed to learn fast, or else help destroy all he held dear.
