It's refreshing when you find a Batman story that both is epic and successfully explores the core of a resolutely explored character. Taking as its catalyst a sub-plot from the seminal Batman: Year One, the story revolves around murders occurring on national holidays, the victims connected to Mob boss "The Roman." Dubbed "Holiday," the killer uses an untraceable handgun and leaves small trinkets at the scene. Plenty of suspects are available, but the truth is something the Dark Knight never suspected. This series scores two major coups: it brilliantly portrays the transfer of Gotham rule to the supervillains and charts the horrific transformation of Harvey Dent from hardened D.A. to the psychotic Two-Face. Both orbit around the sharply portrayed relationship between Dent, Commissioner Gordon, and Batman: a triumvirate of radically different perceptions of Justice. It is always great to see the formative incarnation of Batman, drenched in noir here.Jeph Loeb's writing is keenly aware that Batman is a detective, and Tim Sale portrays a Gotham that is a fertile breeding ground for corruption and madness. Here, Batman is coming to terms with the potent image he projects and the madness it attracts. There are many fine Batman stories, but the ones that capture the spirit with extreme clarity are few. On this alone, The Long Halloween comes highly recommended. Masterfully executed, this is an excellent chance to revisit the world of Batman as fresh as in the summer of 1939. --Danny Graydon

A Worthy Long Halloween Followup 4 out of 5 stars.

Dark Victory expands upon The Long Halloween, and has a story interesting enough to please fans of Loeb's original Batman-mob story. Robin isn't played heavily, which is a good thing for me, but any Batman fans should pick this up.

Paired with "The Long Halloween" this is one of the best graphic novel series I've read. The illustrations are phenominal and the story works very well introducing Batmans greatest foes in with the realistic mob villians.

I thought it was pretty good. I guess its hard for me to get into the whole batman vs the mafia(godfather) story in both novels, but it was written so well I was addicted and flew through them.

The only complaint I could have would be that the "freaks" parts fell short. I know that we all know about their back stories and if they went deeper into the freaks it would be like retelling what we all know already, but isn't that what we all love?

I mean for me there just wasn't enough depth to the Joker, or Freeze, who both have great back stories and personality. Characters like Poison Ivy, Penguin, and Scarecrow barely had any lines. They felt more like small parts and I thought they were taken out and down way too easily. They hardly had a deep plan or sinister actions that we are used to.

With a title like Dark Victory, I guess I expected a little more darkness from the freaks, at one point Joker comes close, but falls short.

Jim Lee's art is fantastic. The only reason I've cracked this book open again after my first and only read is to look at the art, and the art alone.
Jeph Loeb's storytelling is the same as it's always been. Bits are genuinely cool, good characterization here and there- which keeps you reading. But then the guy starts randomly shoving in cheap twist after twist- until the whole thing is reduced to an unintelligible pile.
He ends with little to no resolution on important plot points.
That sort of thing leaves some people wanting more.
I only wonder why I bought the damn thing.

Unfortunately, this second volume of "Batman: Hush" falls victim to the same problems that usually plague the second halves of graphic novel series. In other words, the storyline is predictable and the action outweighed by tedious amounts of exposition, as though the author is trying to unravel the previous volume's mysteries as fast as possible rather than allowing the story to unfold more naturally. The artwork is still very solid, but I would have greatly preferred to sacrifice some of the mystery of Volume I (which is excellent!) if it would have meant keeping Batman from long expository ponderings while he's supposedly fighting for his life!

Reading this second volume, I was reminded again and again of the second volume of "Superman: For Tomorrow", which suffers almost all the same problems. Overall, I'd say both series are still worth reading, but in both cases, the first half is definitely better!

Very well made book, although it does feel a bit fragile; the pages are beautifully made. The pictures look great and it looks like a great read from the story that inspired Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and The Dark Knight movie. I have yet to read it all, but it is a really good Batman novel so far. Its even got a neat interview with the director himself. Interested in Batman and the Absolute line? You gotta buy this book.

Hmm, i bought the Absolute Hush from Amazon not the Long Halloween but i did read the long halloween and the story is amazing, the second book Dark Victory is a good follow up as well, if you're a batman fan and haven't read this book you should, it almost like not owning your own copy of Blonde on Blonde.

This is a great Batman story! And the Absolute Batman edition is a great addition (or start) of a Batman collection. Great read and a must have for any Batman fan.

The dream is dead...for now 3 out of 5 stars.

In the aftermath of Civil War, Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, met his apparent end via sniper's bullet. With Cap dead, Fallen Son focuses on the aftermath of his demise, and the effects it has on fellow heroes Wolverine, Spider-Man, and his one time ally and opposing force of the pro-registration act, Iron Man. The comics collected in Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America, are the various Fallen Son one-shots written by Jeph Loeb, who marked this as his return to Marvel. The biggest flaw of Fallen Son is that there are so many great ideas here that never really come to fruition. Loeb has managed to garner emotion in his previous, more higher profile works for Marvel (Daredevil: Yellow and even Spider-Man: Blue), but his attempts to do so here just seem stale. There's great artwork throughout though, including the talents of the great John Romita Jr., Ed McGuiness, and Planetary and Astonishing X-Men artist John Cassaday as well. That being said, you'll either dig Fallen Son or you won't, depending on how you feel about an icon like Steve "Captain America" Rogers getting laid to rest (for now). All in all, Fallen Son is worth a look at the very least, but don't expect anything special.

The Supreme Power series and Ultimates series each provided a fresh take on old characters and stories, injecting a new level of "realism", depth, and consistency in characterization and plot. Those elements have weakened over time in the Ultimate universe, at different rates in different titles, but until now remained strong in Supreme Power. This book destroys both universes. The characters become two dimensional at best and act completely against their established personalities and storylines to advance arbitrary action and plot twists. Perhaps the authors spent too much time working on "traditional" comics, or perhaps their individual genius was lost in committee, but either way the magic is gone - and unfortunately the "canonization" of the events in this series makes it unlikely to return.

Loeb is one of our greatest comic book writers,especially when it comes to Batman. He'skinda making our hero into something new, much more believable. Loeb and Sale's classic story (where their reputation rests) is the early Batman stories, like The Long Halloween, which features Catwoman quite prominently, though she does disappear. This is the story of her time gone from TLH, in Rome. We learn a lot about Selina Kyle. It seems Loeb's influence is heavily on her as well as many of the other Batman characters.

When we last saw Catwoman at the end of Dark Victory, we had learned of the possibility that Carmine Falcone was her father. In this followup, the last of Jeph Loeb's very successful trilogy that started with The Long Halloween, we find Selina in Rome searching for the answers to this mystery. Accompanying her on this roller coaster journey is one Mr. Edward Nigma, aka The Riddler, who ably and humorously provides the fodder for Selina's many acid tongued barbs, and as we eventually find out later in the story, much, much more. From the intriguing plotline to the witty one-liners and Selina's insightful and engaging internal monologue, this tale fires on all cylinders. Loeb's love for Catwoman is obvious, with his extensive use of her in all of his Battales, and who can blame him. Her star power shines brightly throughout them all by the sheer force of her multifaceted and magnetic personality. Loeb delivers, for a delightful change, a fairly wordy script that isn't the rapid read that his two previous installments of this ongoing saga, especially TLH, were and in the process delivers his most exceptional work yet. Most sequels usually end up as pale and disappointing imitations of the original, but he has bucked that trend with this series that exhibited improvements with each installment, culminating here with his grand finale. His place in the Batman pantheon of writers was cemented with these books, and while he may be currently writing for Marvel, here is one fan who would like to see him weave his magic one more time with the Bat and the Cat.

Ultimate Example of the Generation Gap 4 out of 5 stars.

Here is the first of 4 X-Men books, chronicling the Onslaught Saga from the late 90's. Many people will praise it. Many people will hate it. This is one of the those books that marked the beginning of a downward trend for Marvel.

I grew up in the 80's/90's. I was in Elementary school when the X-Men cartoon first aired. To me and my generation, that was our X-Men. We bought the toys, watched the show, read comics like "X-Cutioner's Song" and loved every minute of it. I think Onslaught marks the end of our era. "Fatal Attractions" was the highpoint, and "Onslaught" was the swan song. There was a lot that I remember and liked about this story. For my generation, Onslaught is a quiet classic.

However, for those who grew up in the 60's/70's, Onslaught is one of those moments that burns them. They can't stand the bizarre, ridiculous plot twists, and cheap shocks. From an unbiased standpoint, I can see their point. This is not the X-Men they grew up with. This is not their style. It was our style.

Essentially, the X-Men are facing a mysterious threat known as Onslaught that has been haunting them since the end of the "Age of Apocalypse". In this book, Onslaught is revealed and his plans for evolution and domination are set in motion. The story brings in the entire Marvel Universe and this was essentially the prelude to the Heroes Reborn series that relaunched Captain America, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, & the Avengers.

At $30, the price is a bit high and should only be considered by people who know what they're getting into. My only disappointment with the book is the lack of material from the months of build-up to the story. In the original trades, the book starts with the Juggernaut story where he first utters the name "Onslaught". I think that would have been a nice addition to this new release.

This really is a nostalgia book. Those who grew up with this era, should have a lot of fun remembering this story. Those who were already adults when this came out will loath it. Those who recently started reading comics recently will find it simplistic and lacking depth. Choose your path!

Jeph Loeb is known for two things in the world of comics, creating amazing stories that become instant classics and creating unreadable dribble. This stories falls into the latter category, and being backed up on art by Michael Turner who apparently has never seen a human body doesn't help matters. Save yourself some money and skip to Superman/Batman Volume 3.

It's difficult to read this story now without a tinge of melancholy in light of the recent heartbreaking and tragic passing of Michael Turner. The entire comic industry, along with his family and friends, has lost a remarkable talent and, by all accounts, a great guy also. He didn't do many complete stories outside of his own projects, which makes this rare assemblage of impressive illustrations all the more cherishable. This trade is one of the very few that I occasionally peruse strictly for his beautiful artwork alone. From his fearsome Batman to his gorgeous Wonder Woman, his amazing ability is strikingly evident in every panel. Not to be slighted, Jeph Loeb's writing talent is also quite evident in this tale that is easily the best of the four that he worked on for this title. His trademark dueling internal monologues are showcased, as is the return of Supergirl. This time around, Superman and Batman are joined by Wonder Woman and Big Barda on a perilous mission to Apokolips to rescue Supergirl from the clutches of that dastardly despot Darkseid, highlighted by a titanic physical battle and also one of high stakes poker between Batman and Darkseid. The sole flaw is that the story should have ended about thirty pages sooner upon their return to Earth, since the closing pages appear more like an epilogue whose primary purpose was to set the stage for the introduction of Kara to the rest of the DCU, and painfully cheesy it was at that. Nevertheless, still a very solid story with stunning art, the likes of which, sadly, we will never see again. Michael, you will be missed.

Superman and Batman is there a better pairing in comics? I don't think so and this is exactly why I think it. Superman and Batman are just perfect foils for each other. Batman the paranoid pessimist, Superman the over trusting optimist. I could go on but, I'm not going to the two just fit together. The story is solid with several different characters from across the board heroes and villains both making appearances throughout. Art isn't the best you will ever see but, it's not too bad. I recommand to anyone who likes either of the characters.

Illustrated by Ed McGuinness and written by Jeph Loeb, this volume collects the first six issues of the Superman/Batman comic book. This book is like a throwback to the team-ups of yesteryear such as World's Finest. Highly enjoyable!
