Fantastical Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.

Reviewed by Susan Pettrone for Reader Views (8/06)

Shadow, trouble in the form of an elf, a thief and a woman, returns to her homeland after being absent for a few centuries. But things are not as she left them. A human city has appeared nearby the woods and within the city, humans and elves struggle daily to co-exist. When Shadow returns, she immediately discovers there is more wrong with the city than first meets the eye.

Instead of a calm, average city, Allanmere is a strange place, filled with surprises and danger for this wily elf. Even the "token" she expected to purchase from the Guild is odd. Instead of one token which covers all, she discovers there are three separate tokens a thief can choose from - copper, silver and gold - and instead of the Guild protecting its members, it routinely turns its back on those who are in need. Being a master thief, Shadow purchases her gold token, but not after she has an encounter with Ganrom the local Guildmaster, an encounter she soon regrets.

It is this encounter that sets the stage for more trouble than Shadow ever expected. And in fact, Shadow's travels throughout the city become even more interesting when she learns a silver bracelet she has acquired attracts more than its usual share of attention from many, including an assassin who seems determined to kill Shadow. Early on, Shadow is deeply embroiled not only in the day to day trials of a thief, but in a fight for her life as well. She finds a long lost friend in Donya, the High Lord's daughter with whom she has a previous history, as well as Cris and Aubry, two fellow thieves who prove to be more help than she ever imagined when the final encounter with Ganrom occurs.

"Shadow" was very different from the type of books I usually read and I was hesitant at first as to whether I'd find it to my liking. But by the second chapter, I was drawn into the mysterious Shadow and her lifestyle and by the end of the book I was so involved in Shadow's life, that I found myself wanting to know more about this magical elf.

"Shadow" is a fantastical adventure that is sure to mesmerize any young reader who is interested in fantasy and lore. It is filled with interesting characters, engaging dialogue and a storyline that keep the reader wanting more. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in a story that is "out of the norm" or simply "out of this world". For like its main character Shadow, this book promises, and delivers, a new adventure around every corner.

Editorial Review:

Never trust an elf, a thief, or a woman. Shadow is all three... Shadow, a light-hearted (and light-fingered) elven thief, returns to her homeland after several centuries' absence only to find that a great human trade city has grown up next to the forest in which she was born. Now the elves and the humans maintain an uneasy alliance, but when Shadow steals a magical bracelet, she finds herself caught in the middle of a plot that may tear the city-and the alliance-apart forever.

Shadow Dance is possibly one of Logston's best books ever 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Shadow Dance, by Anne Logston, is a marvelous fantasy that concludes the trilogy. Logston brings her characters alive once again with the same stylish, mischevios air that makes her other novels so popular. Shadow, Donya and the other characters are added to a marvelously complex plot that can only be rated with five stars.

You can't help but love Shadow 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book, along with the rest of the series, is full of personality. They aren't very long, but within those few pages you live with the characters. I would recommend anything by Logston.

Shadow's back, and better than ever! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Everyone's favorite elf thief doesn't seem to get a moment to enjoy her fine wine or fine men before yet another problem crops up. This time, a strange, exotic man has appeared in the forest. He says he's looking for something... but isn't very interested in sharing the whole story. Then, plague starts spreading through the humans of Allanmere. Shadow and friends must find a way to stop the plague, and solve the threat that brought the foreigner so far from home -- otherwise they may find themselves facing it as well.

I can't even begin to explain how enjoyable the Shadow novels are, and this one is no exception. The characters are loveably realistic, with flaws and tempers, thoughtful and sometimes tragic histories, all put into a setting that leaves you craving more history and knowledge about it. You never stop having a good time with Shadow! Although fantasy novels are longer these days, you won't feel like there's anything missing or shallow about these books... you'll just wish there were more of them written.

Editorial Review:

When the Crimson Plague leaves hundreds dead in the streets of Allanmere, Shadow must lead a band of warriors into a horror-laden swamp to find a cure.

Wild Blood is a story that you can get lost in 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Wild Blood, by Anne Logston is a captivating story that's so good that once you pick it up, you get lost in it, finding it hard to get back out and to put it down. If you have anything important to do don't start reading it or you might never accomplish what you have to do. The characters in this story seem like real people, because they're not too perfect. Often when you read stories the characters are unbelievable, and are often too perfect to be possible. but the characters Ria, and her twin brother are so realistic that its hard to imagine that they don't really exsist.

There are better books, but I'D buy it. 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is reflected from two different view points- that of Ria, and that of her brother. Ria, a half elf, is raised amongst humans, and her brother raised amognst elves. Ria, promised to marry a boy who's like a brother to her, longs for the understanding of someone, while her brother wishes that all the elves that stand against him would not. Will Ria and her brother learn to live with the race that cares for each, or will the plans of agroup of people run awry, and the two races go sofar as to kill each other as they did before Ria?

Editorial Review:

Dreaming of returning to her elven ancestors and locating her twin brother, Ria is forced to make a decision regarding her arranged marriage to a human and hopes to form an alliance between humans and elves.

A wouderful book just to enjoy 5 out of 5 stars.

Jael, a royal elf of Allenmere, is short, with amber hair, slanted eyes, and has a sixth toe on her left foot. Also known as Jael the unlucky or Jael the cursed by her people because bad luck clings to her like an invisible shadow. When she finds out that her father is not the king, but a total stranger, she is lost, confused, and soulsick. During this time she runs across a cult with the ambitons to kill her for a ceramony. Geting away, talking with her aunt Shadow (a thief) and finding out the truth from her mother, Jael finds inner peace with herself. When all ends to all, she finds a true friend. This is a great book to read when you feel like escaping.

Impossible not to love 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was pretty young when I first read this book, 13 or 14, and it forever set my view of how a fantasy novel should be. Some eight or nine years later, I still love this book, although fantasy novels these days tend to be longer and more detailed and epic. However, Anne Logston's forte is characters, and there is not one you won't love (or love to hate) in this book. She's also very good at political plots without ever making them dull and difficult to get through. Quite the opposite, in fact!

Jael is a princess of Allanmere plagued by bad luck, starting with how she was unfortunate enough to be born with such oddly exotic looks -- and not stopping with how she seems to have an adverse effect on any magic around her. (If that wasn't enough, she's twenty and pretty much flat-chested!) Allanmere is a mostly human city that has trading ties with the forest inhabited by elves next to which it is built, but racial tensions run strong, especially ever since the resurgence of the plague not long ago. Jael, daughter of the human queen and her elvan husband, often finds herself dealing with this difficult balancing act as well -- yet another "dagger's edge" she must walk.

Frustrated with her situation, Jael slips out into the city fairly often, where she can meet up with her human friend Tanis. However, she's not going unnoticed. A handsome ambassador with his eye on Jael and a rising religious cult both are bringing change to Allanmere. But a string of murders is sending the city into turmoil and Jael and Tanis are caught up in it somehow. Jael's going to have to put her bad luck to good use as she navigates a crisis brought on the city, and a few problems she's brought on herself, even as she discovers the truth about her heritage and her magic.

All this and I haven't re-read the book in a few years. :) I've lost count of how many times I have read it, though. The characters are endearing, and you'll find most of them appear in a previous series, the Shadow books -- which are just as good, if not better, with the lively and somewhat hedonistic "Aunt" Shadow of Jael's as the main character. I recommend reading this one first, though, otherwise Jael's heritage will be totally spoiled for you! Also, there is a sequel to this novel, Dagger's Point, which is about Jael setting off on a journey to reconcile with her heritage and claim what she's missing. Don't pass up anything Anne Logston if you love a good adventure and characters that you'll never forget.

Editorial Review:

Shadow, a fiesty elfin thief, is the only hope when an evil cult seeks to destroy all the elves in the world and targets Jael, the part-elfin daughter of the rulers of Allenmere.

I really enjoyed this book when I was younger, I've been trying to find it in stores. It's out of print, but it really should be reprinted. It's a good book for teens who like fantasy novels.

Jael's journey continues 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the sequel to Dagger's Edge, in which Jael finds out the truth about her heritage while dealing with the crisis a religious cult brings on Allanmere, the city of which she is a princess. Now, one of her siblings has been chosen as heir, and Jael is free to do as she wishes. Inspired by her "Aunt" Shadow's wandering ways and her own desire to come to terms with her exotic heritage, Jael sets out on a journey for the furthest anyone from Allanmere has ever been... to the place where her father is from.

Tanis, her best friend, insists on going with her, and the mysterious assassin Blade gives her a request as well. (If you can call it a "request".) But Jael is determined to make it on her own terms and discover who she really is, no matter what. Unfortunately it's a wide, harsh world they live in, and traveling through it is no easy task. Then there's the fact that Jael has no idea how welcoming her father's people will be, what her father will be like, or what challenges she will face in order to find the piece of herself that she needs. Does she have the courage and perseverance to make it that far?

It would be hard for any book to replace Dagger's Edge in my heart anyway, but I don't feel that this book is as good as the first. There's some good character development of Jael and Tanis, with the difficult relationship developing between them, and seeing more of Anne Logston's magical medieval world is interesting, but there just isn't as much charm to this novel as the one before. Still, if you liked the first, I'd recommend reading this one. There are plenty of memorable moments, and you get to see Jael growing up while she and Tanis weather the ups and downs of their somewhat pell-mell journey.

Editorial Review:

Jaellyn's mixed heritage gives her powerful magic, but a portion of her soul is missing, and she must risk her life to save her future, confronting bloodthirsty dragons and hideous shape shifters as she searches for her father.

couldn't put it down 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I read this book and couldn't put it down for a minute. I LOVED it! Ms. Logston has done it again by bringing to life a very lovable elf and entangling her in another problem. The creative way she then gets her out kept me on the edge of my seat from page one.

Shadow's at it again! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book belongs to the Shadow trilogy, and in these novels the pace never slows. Shadow is a loveable and feisty elf with wandering feet, eyes, and hands. If you asked her to pick between wine, men, and treasure -- well, she couldn't. But although she denies it, she's pretty fond of her friends, even the humans. Every time you pick up a Shadow novel, expect an adventure, because that's exactly what Shadow's going to give you!

This time around, Shadow's been blamed for stealing something -- and she didn't even do it. The irony is killer, but not as killer as the factions threatening to break apart the city of Allanmere. As Mistress of the Thieves' Guild, Shadow reluctantly concludes it's in everyone's best interests to find the item. She only has one lead, though -- the incredibly powerful man to whom it originally belonged, long ago. But isn't he dead by now?

Her "friend", the notorious assassin Blade, seems to believe otherwise. Blade also seems to have motives of her own, deeply intertwined with her mysterious past. The two end up joining forces to recover the item and exact some revenge, but they're far from unexpected... either of them. Can Shadow squeeze out of this predicament, and save her friends' hides while she's at it? And maybe, just maybe help herself to a little bit of the treasure?

These days, fantasy novels tend to be longer and more "epic", but nothing can replace a good Shadow adventure. If you want a good time with memorable characters and intriguing situations, wrapped up in a fun and fast-moving plot, then don't pass these novels up.

Editorial Review:

Determined to recover a stolen jewel from the wizard Baloran, Shadow must rely on the help of Blade, an assassin who can guide her to the sorcerer's lair.

Do you like fairy-tales? 4 out of 5 stars.
18 of 21 people found this review helpful.

The first thing I did when I finished this book was open it up to page one and start reading it all over again. Heh, I haven't done that with a book since I was about 15 (I'm 26 now), so I guess that says something. The book is not perfect: I pretty much knew how it would end by page 3. But it's a pretty darn enjoyable trip getting there, and didn't spoil the experience for me. Ms. Logston's Crystal Keep is an incredible setting for a novel: a long hallway, with virtually unlimited doors leading into other worlds. And the premise of having to search these worlds to be granted your heart's desire is, at the same time, fresh and timeless. The characters are quite likeable, and the plot is entertaining enough, making for a very enjoyable read. My only other criticism is that the plot resolution is a little weird: too literal for my taste (you'll have to read the book to understand). But the setting and concept behind the story are enchanting enough to make up for the (few) weaknesses in the plot. Highly recommended for those looking to indulge in a little escapism.

A young woman searches for her own special magic-and finds her own heart.

"A charming fairy story of love and self-discovery."-Locus

So-so 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

It was readable but I did almost give it up at one point in boredom. Neve's "strength" is her adamant and childish desire to become the next Guardian, so whenever she rises to the occasion so to say, you have to read through her spoiled-brat resolve, but otherwise she's an okay kid. I admit that I didn't find the story at all romantic. I disliked Ash, the "hero", too much. I had just finished rereading Guardians' Key in happy anticipation of this sequel, and I guess that was a big mistake, because it reinforced standards, and made Gespry, the monkey-demon, much too fresh in my mind for me to digest Ash in a romantic light(he's a sailor with monkey-like feet and Gespry's way of talking). It was like reading a version where Dara hooks up with Gespry, except that I liked Dara better than Neve, and the setting of Guardians' Key was obviously more fascinating, as was the plot. When I was finally done with this book I did have a question: why doesn't Neve seem to consider herself Dara's daughter? Sure she thinks of Dara as 'mother', but when she thinks along the lines of who's child she is, she always thinks of the Nexus and Vanian. (BTW: It WAS nice having a few scenes with him in, though I wish those scenes included Dara, since I so love the way they interact). I'm sure I've by now made it evident that my liking for Guardians' Key has perhaps made Exile so disappointing, but Exile doesn't just suffer in comparison. The plain fact is that Exile is not a "good book". It's not exactly horrible though either. Still, I suggest you merely reread Guardians' Key if you want to revisit the Crystal Keep and reread Lord Vanian and Dara's adventure if you want a fragile romance.

The Prequel to "Shadow" 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Overall an excellent read. If you haven't read any of the "Shadow" series then read this first. If you have then still read this. The book goes into the character of Cherie, the elf that always seems to help Shadow and is said to be the oldest of the Wilding clan. The book takes place in the beginning of elf-human contact and explains how the tradition of the high lord & high lady elf/human relationship started. Overall very well written due to its 3D characters and fascinating story. The beginning is a bit slow but it rapidly picks up its pace.

chyrie and mother forest make a good pair 5 out of 5 stars.

anne logstons book green daughter is sweet but also sad. It tells a tale of elves ripped from their home and forced to work with the ones who abused them. This book is overwelming with excitement i suggest anyone who has had anything to do with adopitons to read this book.

A classic fairtale... 4 out of 5 stars.

Anne Logston has the ability to pull the heartstrings and tell a good story at the same time. In this book, which is based off of the world she created in the Shadow series, Chyrie is an elf caught in the middle of a war/invasion she doesn't understand. The book is written in such a way and is short enough that is creates the feeling of being around a campfire telling fantasy stories. I must say that I enjoyed Greendaughter, and if you have read any of Logstons previous books and enjoyed them, then you will not be disappointed with this one.

Editorial Review:

Elf animal-speaker Chyrie must help forge an alliance between her race and the despised humans if they are to survive the barbarian invaders who threaten both people.

Very Good Read 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

If you like your fantay filled with romance, then Anne Logston is the leading lady. Logston manages to write books that are enthralling (and safe) for youth and adults. She has an excellent sense of dialog and her stories are always complete.

Periann, daughter of the High Lord and Lady of Agrond, is on her way to her Aunt, High Lady of Bregond, to be prepared to take over that duty from her. Not the least thrilled, she takes a swift ride away from her guard to clear her head. Being the warrior that she is, she sees someone in trouble and rescues him. Low and behold, she rescues a Sarkond, the two other countries' greatest enemy.

Atheris could hardly believe he'd been rescued by a Bregond. He's being chased by deadly warriors trained to kill, though, and can't wonder too long. Chased into the land of her greatest enemy, Peri is forced to trust this man and follow his lead.

This book is a must for any Logston fan, but please read Firewalk first and get a good feel for the pride and history of those two countries: Agrond and Bregond.

Editorial Review:

A new romantic fantasy from the author of "Firewalk". Known equally for her swordmanship and for her magical talents, Peri single-handledly rescues a prisoner from a Sarkond warriors' camp--and finds herself the liberator of a dreaded Sarkond heretic. Now, they must depend on each other in order to survive--and face the prophecy they are destined to fulfill, together.
