Editorial Review:

The Princess and the Goblin is a popular children's fantasy novel written by author George MacDonald. In MacDonald's second novel for children, The Princess and the Goblin is the story of a Princess named Irene who lives in a castle on a mountain with her nurse, and in a cave below is a race of ugly looking Goblins who have heads that are as hard as stone. A fatal battle of wits must take place between these goblins and the princess, her great-great-grandmother and friend Curdie. The Princess and the Goblin is highly recommened for those who enjoy children's fantasy novels and also those who are enthusiasts of the writings of George MacDonald.

Editorial Review:

Its height I could not distinctly see. As soon as I entered, I had the feeling so common to me in the woods, that there were others there besides myself, though I could see no one, and heard no sound to indicate a presence. Since my visit to the Church of Darkness, my power of seeing the fairies of the higher orders had gradually diminished, until it had almost ceased. But I could frequently believe in their presence while unable to see them. Still, although I had company, and doubtless of a safe kind, it seemed rather dreary to spend the night in an empty marble hall, however beautiful, especially as the moon was near the going down, and it would soon be dark. So I began at the place where I entered, and walked round the hall, looking for some door or passage that might lead me to a more hospitable chamber.

Unabridged Audiobook. 1 MP3 CD - 5 hours, 19 minutes. Read by Ian Whitcomb.

Young Princess Irene is sent to the country to be raised in a half farmhouse, half castle located in the side of a mountain. While exploring the top of the castle, Irene becomes lost and inexplicably finds her way to a mystifying and beautiful woman spinning a thread. Princess Irene is drawn to the woman whom she discovers is her great-great grandmother. But after she returns, her nurse, Lootie, refuses to believe in the old woman's existence and the young Princess cannot find the way back to her great-great grandmother.

Days later, while on an outing with Lootie, Princess Irene believes that she detects a Goblin. They meet a young miner, Curdie, who confirms her sighting. Soon Curdie discovers Goblins lurking under the castle that have constructed an evil plot against the king and his palace. Princess Irene's belief in her great-grandmother's powers becomes essential as she and Curdie work to foil the sinister Goblin plan. As the Princess tells Curdie, "sometimes you must believe without seeing".

Unabridged Audiobook. 1 MP3 CD - 6 hours, 1 minute. Read by Ian Whitcomb.

In this sequel to The Princess and the Goblin, Curdie has returned to his life as a miner and has dismissed the supernatural happenings of the past, believing them to have been a dream. When Curdie callously wounds a pigeon, his conscience leads him to Princess Irene's mystical great-great-grandmother for help. She has him plunge his hands into a pile of rose petals that burns like fire. Extraordinarily, this grants him the power to see what kind of "animal" a person is at heart.

She then sends him on a quest, accompanied by a peculiar doglike creature named Lina, who was once a human. However, Curdie must resolve his own skepticism before he can use the powers granted to him to defeat the evil that is threatening the future of the kingdom.

Editorial Review:

Possibly George Macdonald's best-known fantasy, At the Back of the North Wind has enchanted children and adults for more than a century. A landmark in the development of children's writing, this insightful and enthralling fairy tale is just as enchanting today as when it was first published. Modern readers will thrill to the adventures of little Diamond with the mysterious and majestic North Wind, who is both kind and terrible, and who seems to answer to a far higher power than herself. Newly designed and typeset in a modern 6-by-9-inch format by Waking Lion Press.

Excellent story, lousy publication 1 out of 5 stars.

This edition of this timeless children's classic was a disappointment. The paper is poor quality, the illustrations uninteresting and the print small, dense, and, for a child, difficult to read. The overall appearance was of poorly done, cheap work--and it is the most expensive ($26.95) of all those offered of this title. The story, however, is wonderfull and a marvellous one for an eight to ten year old; but try another edition!

Editorial Review:

Said to be on the bookshelf of C.S. Lewis, At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald is the story of a young farm boy, Diamond, who is naturally connected to goodness and nature -- he was even named after a horse. Diamond's story unfolds as he befriends, and is befriended by a magical, fairy-like lady who embodies the "North Wind." Inspired by MacDonald's deep Christian faith, as were all his works, the remarkable, moving character of Diamond is in part also based upon MacDonald's own son Maurice, who died very young. Particularly written for young readers, At the Back of the North Wind will please everyone who loves C.S. Lewis's Narnia. The enchanted land of the North Wind will please one and all.

Great Book; Excellent Recording 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I borrowed this 2-disc set from the library before buying it from Amazon, simply to be sure that the recording was a quality one. It is. Good musical interludes grace a multi-cast performance, with women reading women's parts, and men the men's.

The book itself, in my view, is second only to "The Lost Princess" (also often called "The Wise Woman") in all of George MacDonald's children's writings. By this I do mean that it is stellar in every respect. Highly recommended resource!

Editorial Review:

It’s a well known fact that a new-born princess will often be subject to a curse—especially if her royal parents neglect to invite an important magical relative to the christening. But never has there been a curse as charming (and hilarious) as that which befalls the Light Princess. Deprived of gravity, she can’t take anything—or anyone—seriously. Even worse, she’s apt to blow away on the first stiff breeze! Can even a handsome prince bring her down to Earth? One of the most acclaimed literary fairy tales of all time, George MacDonald’s profound and witty story floats into bubbling new life in this lovingly crafted full cast reading.
