A Masterpiece of the master Manara 5 out of 5 stars.

Manara is, along with Serpieri, one of the greatest artists of the female form. To read uninformed critics saying that his art is "crude" is laughable, a clear sign of how some people have no knowledge of art.

It's also preposterous, ludicrous to call his work "too hardcore". Maybe there is some magical book of rules that every artist should follow when drawing female characters? I wouldn't know, i have never heard of such book.

Manara's work is, to put simply, far above even popular american artists like Adam Hughes and Frank Cho (Hughes and Cho themselves say so - and they do it not to sound humble, but because THEY actually know what they are talking about).

Every book of Manara available here on Amazon is a masterpiece, and any REAL fan of art should have them on their collections.

Only for Manara fans 1 out of 5 stars.

Manara is one of the most lauded graphic novel artists, but I have no clue why. His drawings are crude, and way too hard core porn for my tastes. I thought this book would have tasteful nudes. This book is only for Manara fans in my opinion.

Piranese 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent graphic book, very far above average in writing, and a total work of art in graphics.

A rare disappointment from Manara & his collaborators 2 out of 5 stars.

A fine draftsman, watercolourist and storyteller, Milo Manara is best known, in the US at least, for his (1) sex comedies, the Click series, Butterscotch, etc. which range from light and breezy to downright raunchy (regardless they are always fun), and (2) illustrated historically-based collaborations with the late Hugo Pratt (creator of "Corto Maltese"), "Indian Summer" and "El Gaucho." and the filmmaker Alejandro Jodoworsky ("Santa Sangre," "El Topo"), "Borgia."

"Piranese: the Prison Planet" falls into neither category: rather "Piranese" represents a disappointingly weak opening chapter in a sci-fi epic, the kind of which is serialized in the US in "Heavy Metal" Magazine (usually beautifully illustrated, though often meandering and often inconclusive). Ensuing chapters might get better, once Manara hits his stride with this particular story, but as far as opening chapters go... this really isn't his best work.

Based on amazing primary sources drawn from Pratt's research into colonial times in the Americas, Manara's collaborations with Hugo Pratt are highly recommended. If you are into 'raunch and roll' comedy, check out "Butterscotch," and the "Click" books. Check those out instead.

Manara paint the legacy of Pratt 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Milo Manara is one of the greatest italian artist. He is a famous illustrator and his fine touch can transform simple pieces of paper into sweet and fantastic dreams. But with Hugo Pratt you can see the real Manara, his love for history and adventures, for poetry and prose, for every kind of art. Don't miss this masterpiece!

Oridnary colonial soldiers story 3 out of 5 stars.

If you expect a book about sex and people, this ain't it. This is pretty much just a story about soldiers in the wooden ships and muskets age, with some women thrown in for bonadage slave sentiment, with a few sex scenes - those mostly sordid. The art is okay. See his other titles for truely sexy books - Gullevera is a quick, neat, sexy, fairly clean romp for adults who like naked women but also enjoy women who aren't always naked.

As good as "Indian Summer". great story, great drawing 5 out of 5 stars.

I think Pratt and Manara are the Italian dream-team of comics. The detailed but light drawing style of Manara fits perfectly Pratt's great historic pieces. I wish Pratt was alive to complete a trilogy that started with Indian Summer and continued with el Gaucho.

Beautiful, but expensive 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is beautiful in many ways, but is disappointing at times. The combination of Louys' text and Manara's art is a sure winner. Originally published in France with the original French text, this English version chooses an anonymous, but wonderful, translation from the 1920's. Following a long tradition of publishing this work with sensuous illustrations, the publisher has come up with a new approach. They will publish an original one volume novel in four volumes and illustrate each with the work of a different artist. This first volume contains 15 full-page watercolors by Milo Manara, an artist better known for his adult comics. Those expecting Manara to have converted Louys' sensual story into a graphic novel may be surprised that this is not the case. Where Manara shines as a comic artist, his watercolors are uneven. While some are outstanding, the painting of the statue of Aphrodite is a disappointment. The illustrated binding and layout is sumptuous... This promises to be a beautiful set with Georges Bess and Wendling slated to illustrate volumes 2 and 3. It is wonderful to see Louys' work getting this lavish treatment. The text is still vibrant enough to take on the sensual artwork of these modern artists....

Editorial Review:

Alphrodite is a masterpiece of French 19th century literature. This classical tale of sensuous love was one of the best-selling novels of its time. Published in 1896, Aphrodite made Pierre Louys famous and was by far his greatest success, surpassing that of his other well-know works such as The Songs of Bilitis. Conceived as a novel of the antiquity focusing on women and on light, Aphrodite lends itself naturally to illustration.

Book One, illustrated by Milo Manara - The story takes place in Alexandria in the 1st Century BC where Demetrios, a renowned artist falls in love with a courtesan, Chrysis. She asks him to prove his love to her by committing three crimes and Demetrios agrees. In this volume, Manara lets his imagination run wild as he illustrates a part of this novel.
