Editorial Review:

As director of the Jerhattan Parapsychic Center, telepath Rhyssa Owen coordinated the job assignments for psychically gifted Talents. And though she had her hands full dealing with the unreasonable demand for kinetics to work on the space platform that would be humankind's stepping-stone to the stars, she was always ready to welcome new Talents to the Center.

Feisty and streetwise, twelve-year-old Tirla used her extraordinary knack for languages to eke out a living in the Linear developments, where the poor struggled to make ends meet and children were conscripted or sold into menial work programs. Young Peter, paralyzed in a freak accident, hoped someday to get into space where zero gravity would enable him to function more easily. Both desperately needed help only other Talents could provide.

With the appearance in her life of one extraordinary man with no measurable Talent at all, Rhyssa suddenly found herself questioning everything she thought she knew about her people. And when two Talented children were discovered to have some very unusual -- and unexpected -- abilities, she realized that she would have to reassess the potential of all Talentkind...

Great Story 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the first book in a trilogy that was an all time favorite of mine. I bought the book on tape for my husband at Christmas. He loves it as much as I did!

A good start! 3 out of 5 stars.

The next books are much better. But this was good for the first book. The reader could really do a better job!

Dragonflight 4 out of 5 stars.

I love the book and all of the books of the Dragon Rider series. Anne McCaffrey does agreat job building a world with characters that we can fall in love with and it only gets better from here. The audio book is well done and read but I don't care much for the short tracks.

Editorial Review:

On the beautiful planet Pern, colonized for centuries, Land Holders and Craftsmen have traditionally tithed food and supplies to the dragonweyrs to which they are bound. In times past, the mighty telepathic dragons and their riders were the only protection from the dreaded, life-threatening Thread.

But it has been over 400 years since the last Threadfall, and some people have come to doubt that the menace will every strike again. But F'lar, rider of Pern's greatest bronze dragon, has no such illusions. The Red Star is near; Thread will fall soon.

An overall enjoyable series, but where is the "Challenge"? 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As far as the overall story line and characters go, I'd say this book (and the whole series) has five-star potential. However, one major gripe I have is that the story went along so smoothly, with never a bump in the road and the characters weren't faced with any difficulties that actually threatened their goals or existence. Actually, every plan they came up with is accomplished without even the slightest glitch and the most traumatic moment for the main character Kris is when she has to wait a few extra days for Zanail to get home and she is worried that something went wrong (which of course it didn't). I was sure that in this third book, the conclusion to the main story line, there would have to be some kind of surprise or "Challenge" that would take the characters unprepared and maybe lend a little excitment to the tale. It's just hard to stay absorbed in a book that is completely predictable and contains zilch for suspense.

While the series is well-written and for the most part entertaining and thought-provoking, its just plain disappointing not to encounter some kind of unexpected "Challenge" to the people of Botany.

Editorial Review:

In Freedom's Landing, a galactic invasion forced thousands of humans to colonize a new planet. In Freedom's Choice, human Kris Bjornsen and her comrades found new hope for rebellion.

Now, in Freedom's Challenge, Kris and her Catteni lover Zainal prepare to face danger and pain, in the final fight...for liberty.

"Interesting characters...space opera action!"--Locus

"A satisfying culmination to a saga of desperate courage and the desire for freedom."--Library Journal

"Rip-roaring adventure no science fiction fan could possibly resist."--Romantic Times

* The thrilling follow-up to McCaffrey's national bestsellers, Freedom's Landing and Freedom's Choice

"Rousing, fast paced and riveting. McCaffrey continues to amaze..." --Booklist

Over-simplified but still enjoyable 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Khorii is traveling with her parents when they run into first a derelict space cruiseship, and then get word of a plague that is ripping through the galaxy. Khorii's parents are famous healers, so they drop Khorii, along with her cat and her cyborg step-brother, at a school where they thinks she'll be safe, and head off to confront the plague. But Khorii is not really safe. First, there's a bully who actually tries to kill her cat, then there's the threat of starvation. The plague has been so complete that no food is reaching the school.

When she discovers that a plague-infested freighter is near, Khorii decides to stop following the rules and to act. She travels to the freighter, heals the sole survivor, and, when the school refuses to allow her to return, sets off on a mission of healing.

Unfortunately, the bully comes along--and causes no end of trouble for her with his ambition to become a space tyrant or pirate lord.

Authors Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough use the Acorna series to attempt to help teen and pre-teen readers discover the magic of SF. The clever cats, the device of using a unicorn girl as the protagonist, and Acorna/Khorii's innocence, vegetarianism, and passivism will all appeal to the young reader, especially the young female reader. It seems to me, however, that McCaffrey and Scarborough (both wonderful writers who have created some of the most powerful fantasy available today) go too far in simplifying their writing and simplifying the plot. Rather than write over their readers, I fear that they write under their readers.

Unlike several earlier Acorna stories, however, FIRST WARNING manages to be simple without being annoying. Even adult readers will find much about this story to be enjoyable, and the coming of age aspects are charming.

Editorial Review:

The breathtaking saga of the second generation begins!

It is difficult growing up in the shadow of heroes revered throughout the galaxy. But that is the lot of young Khorii -- daughter of the legendary Acorna and her lifemate Aari -- who must now follow her own destiny through a fantastic universe of wonders and perils.

On a journey, Khorii's trip is delayed when her ship encounters a derelict spacecraft floating aimlessly among the stars, its crew dead in their seats. Suddenly a planned visit by her parents has turned into a terrifying race against time as a deadly plague spreads relentlessly across the universe. Even the healing powers of the Linyaari cannot slow its horrific advance. And now Khorii, one of the few unaffected by the outbreak, must find an antidote -- before the scourge consumes everyone and everything in its path . . . including those she loves above all others.

I truly enjoyed this book, as this is the second time I have purchased and read it. I have all of Anne McCaffrey's books and enjoy reading and re-reading them.

Thanks 5 out of 5 stars.

It finishes off the collection I have. So now I can enjoy this books anytime I want to.

Very sparse on plot and action 2 out of 5 stars.

I usually enjoy Anne McCaffrey's writing and I own many of her books. Unfortunately, this book is far below her normal quality. I like all of the Freedom series books less than those in her other series, however, the first three books had intriguing characters and featured an interesting exploration of the dynamics of forming a new society on an alien planet. In addition, the end of the third book worked well as the end of a trilogy. In my opinion, the only topic worthy of writing about further in future books was a greater exploration of the mysterious Farmers. That storyline is not addressed in any depth in this book.

This novel resembles the additional material an author writes to flesh out the characters or the story's world in the first draft of a novel--the kind of material that is usually greatly condensed or eliminated in the final version. There simply is not enough material here to warrant a novel and the material that is here is more observational than narrative. There is almost no direct conflict in the book to move the plot forward and no major character development either. Unless you like reading about coffee and trading for spare parts for hours, I would recommend stopping at the third book. Better yet, read one of her other excellent series instead. I recommend the Pern series for fantasy fans or the Crystal Singer series for readers who enjoy science fiction.

Editorial Review:

The surviving colonists of the planet Botany have conquered the alien invaders who enslaved them. But their ravaged world needs technology. Planet Earth needs food. And now the survivors need to decide what kind of world they will become.

second wave: Acorna's children 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is similar to those others in this series by the author. They allow you to see what is being written about as if you were there. This story tells how Acorna daughters work out being picked on by the preancestors and how then they learn that they are sisters.

A very good book 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this book on a friday and was reading the last page by Sunday night. I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed this book as much as the rest of the Acorna Series. I can't wait for the next one.

Editorial Review:

It is difficult growing up in the shadow of heroes revered throughout the galaxy. But Khorii became a hero in her own right as she fought to save the universe from a mysterious, deadly plague that not even the healing powers of the Linyaari could stop. Now, confined with the rest of the survivors on Paloduro, it seems as if Khorii and her friends may be able to stem the tide of death and disease. However, ominous signs indicate that the epidemic is only beginning, as old enemies reemerge and a shocking family secret is revealed. With the aid of her android "brother," Khorii must foil the deadly pestilence before a covert mission to cripple the entire star system is catastrophically complete.

A nice way to get into a different kind of Anne McCaffrey... 5 out of 5 stars.

The Lady was my first non-science fiction/fantasy Anne McCaffrey experience, and I was totally hooked! She is truly a great storyteller, and this book had me riveted from the get-go; I found myself rooting for the characters here just as much as any of her Pern or otherwise books. If you`re looking for a good read, pick up The Lady and enjoy Anne just as much as you always have in her other storylines.

almost turned me Republican 3 out of 5 stars.

Warning: This review contains spoilers.

When the horses and the minor characters are considerably more likeable than the main ones, there might be a problem. The three main ones are Michael Carradyne, described as "a very manly sort of man," the trainer/owner of the stable, who cheats on his wife not only during the marriage, but when she's in hospital and also right after she dies; Selina Healey, who like Michael has a monstrous spouse that she is unfaithful to; and Michael's daughter Catriona, who at least is too young to start copying the infidelity of her elders.

Oh, and all three are beautiful, well off and superb riders. With the child, we get hammered with her perfection page after page. About the only thing she does wrong is because a stablehand tells her to, and this is sort of laughed off when it's discovered, because well, she's perfect. She can ride better than anyone except the dead grandfather. Plus her mother was a horrible you-know-what when she was alive. Case closed.

The only character I felt sorry for was the soon-to-be dead wife of Michael. And I only felt sorry for her because all the other "good" "sympathetic" characters hated her, and her husband trots off to a horse show the moment her funeral is over.

Frankly, I was appalled at the behavior in this book. I don't think you can excuse someone's moral shortcomings by their superb riding ability. Not here anyway.

Editorial Review:

They are the Caradynes, who for over 200 years have bred and trained horses of the finest caliber on Coernanagh. But all is not idyllic at hearth and home. Catriona, the youngest child, longs to ride her family's big jumpers and show horses. Her father Michael, recognizes her gift, but her mother hates the very idea. All is in a stalemate until Lady Selina Healy enters their lives, and provides for Catriona and her father a stunning example of how the reins of power can be held by a glorious, fearless woman.

A great read! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I have read Anne McCaffery's books for years now and this one was one of her greats. Granted there are no dragons as her books usually have but don't let that stop you. One of the best books by her that I have ever read and I have many of hers from the Dragon Riders to Acorna and out of all those books, these three are the best read of all hers. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed reading this book. I believe that I've read it about 4 or 5 times now and it still can't put it down when I start it again. A dangerous book to be sure. Enjoy!

I can't see how you could hate this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This series is so great that I was able to read it all in 3 days! I have re-read it so many times I could almost tell you the plot by heart. I highly recommend this book to everyone who likes sci-fi and adventure.

The Jack of All Trades grows up 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

In this authorized sequel to McCaffrey & Stirling's "The City Who Fought," it's 10 years since the barbarian spacegoing raiders the Kolnari captured Space Station SSS-900-C and were sent scurrying with tails between legs by Simeon, the Brain that runs it, and Joat, the 11-year-old technodemon who lurked in its conduits. In gratitude, Simeon and his Brawn, Stationmaster Channa Hap, adopted Joat and saw that she received an education. Now Joat is out on her own, a dropout from Brawn school with a small ship called "WYAL" (for While You Ain't Lookin') and her very own AI, Rand, who, while not a Brain, functions almost as well as one.

Unfortunately the Kolnari have neither forgotten nor forgiven their defeat, and their warlord, Belazir t'Marid, has succeeded in acquiring a virus that attacks the cognitive centers of the brain and, in effect, brings on a kind of artificial Alzheimer's Disease. To spread it, he must create a human carrier, then return that carrier to his own planet and wait for the virus to do its work. The carrier he selects is Amos bin Sierra Nueva, Prophet and leader of the religiously-oriented colony world of Bethel, which played a major role in the Kolnari defeat a decade before. So that Amos can't warn his people of his state, Belazir injects him with a paralyzing agent and advertises, through his underground contacts, for a free ship to carry his "package" home. The "WYAL"--which, unknown to Belazir, has been hired by Central Worlds master spy Bros Sperin to look into the man Belazir uses as a contact and fence--responds, and in short order the fate of Bethel, Station Simeon, and much of the civilized Galaxy hangs on Joat, Rand, Sperin, a Sondee scientist named Seg !T'sel, Joat's one crewmember Alvec, and Amos's close friend and head of security, Joseph.

Anyone who liked Han Solo should be pleased to make the acquaintance of the adult Joat, who is just as shifty and morally ambiguous as the world's most famous Corellian and even better with techie toys. And the Kolnari, like the Imperials who were Solo's bugaboo, are a race of villains you love to hate--utterly evil, yet in a way comprehensible. Seg the Sondee--a romantic with James-Bondworthy dreams of the glamor of espionage, "working on an opera in his spare time" (as practically every Sondee is), and a highly skilled medic and computerman--is another great original character. Though the romantic attraction between Bros and Joat seems rather forced, the story itself is convoluted and fast-moving, with lots of military throwaway such as might be expected from Stirling. A good entry into the Brain & Brawn series.

Editorial Review:

Hoping to settle old scores with the Kolnari who destroyed her home and with an unscrupulous uncle, Joat is challenged to overcome a ""breakout"" disease that destroys its victim's minds and is threatening the entire universe.

Editorial Review:

Perfect for diehard fans as well as readers discovering McCaffrey for the first time, this dazzling new volume features three classic novels from the early years of Pern–Dragonsdawn, Dragonseye, and Moreta.

The spectacular planet Pern seems a paradise to its new colonists–until unimaginable terror turns it into hell. Suddenly deadly spores are falling like silver threads from the sky, destroying everyone and everything they touch. Pern is in mortal danger. The only thing that can stop the Thread is the fire from Pern’s flying dragons. Now, the colonists must join forces with the dragons to burn the Thread before the parasite devours any and all organic life–and turns lush Pern into a barren wasteland.

On Dragonwings traces the story of the early generations on Pern. From the colonists who first created the fire-breathing dragons for protection, through the rise of the dragonriders, these three novels set readers on a daring quest to protect a beautiful and extraordinary planet.
