Editorial Review:

Once before, the sentient races in the known part of the galaxy¿humans, Orions, Ophiuchi and Gorm¿had united to defeat alien invaders. The ¿bugs¿ were as incomprehensibly alien as they were revoltingly evil, using all other living things, intelligent or not, as food, and they had been defeated at a terrible cost. Decades have since passed and the gallant warriors of the battle against the bugs have grown old, while new generations have grown complacent . . . dangerously so. Long ago, much of the population of an entire planet had built a huge fleet of ships, each ship larger than a city, and fled their world before its sun went nova. Those slower-than-light ships traversed many light years, and have now arrived at the world they intend to make their new home. They regard the fact that the planet is already colonized by humans as a mere inconvenience, the more so since their mode of communication is so different from anything humans use that they do not consider humans and their allies to be truly intelligent. And the arriving aliens know¿or, at least, they believe¿that when they die they will be reincarnated, so they do not hesitate to attack humans and their allies with suicidal fury. This time, the intelligent races of the old alliance will not have to worry about becoming an invader¿s meal¿but that will be small comfort if the invaders decide that genocide is justified for their own survival. . . .

Easily one of the best novels I've ever read. 5 out of 5 stars.

...and that's out of thousands.

I cannot recomend this novel highly enough. Possibly the best I've ever read. Back in '92, I almost decided to not buy "Shadow's Daughter" when I stumbled across it on a bookstore shelf - I was soon very glad I didn't.

This would be fantasy, if you're one of those people who care. Set in the 4900's (Fifth Millenium) AD, after global collapse of civilization in the 2000's.

I am extremely impressed by Meier's skill at making her characters seem REAL, especially in the way she's able to convey a character's inarticulate thoughts in text. A great story, and with moral/ethical messages (for example, on justification) if you care to look for them. This is not a "nice" book - no Xanth here - expect nastiness at least on the level of Drake - but all done so POWERFULLY that it can only draw you further into the story. It's not PERFECT (as Haldeman said, no book is) but, imo, it is a masterpiece.

Meier is, as far as I know, an unknown. Someone this good shouldn't be.

Editorial Review:

After Megan's father's entanglement in court politics leaves her family penniless, they are forced to move into literally the lowest section of the city. It takes backbone the strength of steel to find triumph in adversity, and in F'talezon it takes more--it takes magic. But Megan learns to survive--and becomes a hero in the process. Original.

Great addition to the Fifth Milennium series! 5 out of 5 stars.

Shadow's Son gives people who have read previous Fifth Milennium novels a long-awaited look at Megan and Shkai'ra's family--not their separate childhood families, but the family they have forged for themselves as adults. The character of Sova particularly appealed to me, probably because her "outsider's perspective" on Shkai'ra is refreshingly honest. Definitely worth a read for the populace at large, *highly* recommended to 5th Mil fans.

A great addition to the Fifth Millenium Series 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this about six years ago and what stuck in my mind was the torment Megan was going through to find here lost son. She would do ANYTHING to get him back. I highly recommend this book to any readers of Fantasy.

Great adventure, multi-faceted characters, unique! 5 out of 5 stars.

I haven't read the rest of the series -- I picked this book up at random and read it, and now I'm dying to get the rest! The story's pretty darn unique, and the characters -- especially lusty, hot-blooded, death-machine Sh'kaira -- are awesome. This is not your average adventure story.

I want to know how Megan and Sh'kaira met, how the rest of the family came together. I want to read the full account of Sova's adoption, and of Megan's son's birth and sale, and Megan's escape, and -- yeah. You get the idea! It's one of those "read it and you're hooked" books. I advise you to get a copy (of the whole series) immediately!

Editorial Review:

After learning that her kidnapped son has at last been traced to Arko, currently under siege by the multinational forces of brilliant young general Chevenga Lion's Heart, Megan Thane becomes a mercenary in Chevenga's motley army. It's only a matter of time before Chevenga's army defeats the Arkans. Original.

There should be more like this... 5 out of 5 stars.

_The Cage_ is one of the best works of sf/fantasy written in the past two decades. It is a tragedy for the genre that there aren't more novels like this one being written these days. Like the rest of the Fifth Millennium series (Mr. Stirling, Ms. Meyer, Ms. Wehrstein, if you're reading this, won't you please think about writing a few more for us?), it is set in a brilliantly crafted future world which sets itself apart from the usual run of post-destruction-of-current- civilisation settings by not being a cheap copy of the Middle Ages with a few odd bits of anachronistic technology floating about. Instead, there are many carefully thought out cultures, complete with their own languages. Language, after all, is necessary to completely developing a culture, and, despite what some irritating people seem to think, there are many people (especially three thousand years in the future:-) who really don't speak twentieth century English. And, BTW, all the languages of the novel are perfectly pronounceable. People who don't like created languages (especially the beautiful developments of Stirling and Meyer) really shouldn't read SF. Or would such people perhaps prefer the atrocious attempts of certain past authors to represent the language of post-nuclear America with strange phonetic renderings of Southron speech? I'll take Brahvniki over the Duchy of Memfiz any day.

Editorial Review:

Habiku Smoothtongue corrupted everyone and everything that ever meant anything to Megan Thanesdoom--including Megan herself. But now Megan has returned, and she's not alone. Backed by barbarian warrior Shkai'ra's sword, Megan is ready to claim her rightful status in the world.

This book replaced by newer version 3 out of 5 stars.

This book was rewritten and republished in 1992 as "Saber and Shadow". The newer version is a much imrpoved book, and considerably longer to boot. It is part of the "Fifth Millenium series, which is collectively written by S.M. Stirling, Shirley Meier, and Karen Wehrstein.

Sharpest rip 2 out of 5 stars.

This book has been incorporated in the authors later effort "Saber and Shadow"; The later book never stated on the cover it's a rewrite or incorporates significant sections of the earlier work. Why do these authors find it neccessary to invent new words?? Peasants are peasants are peasants; why name them "shaiids" just because the book is set 5000 years after a holocaust. If the author finds it neccessary to put in all these made up words to show how the language has evolved or devolved at least they ought to parenthecize the word we as readers are familiar with and insert it right there in the sentence. I hate having to stop reading to try and sound out a place, "Illizbuah" sounds like "Elizabeth N.J." or break my concentration by flipping to a glossary. For goodness sakes we are reading the book this century (In English) not 30 centuries from now. The history at the back of the "saber and Shadow" book along with racial types, clothing worn, etc. was useful but I think it should be in the front of the book. Well written and
interesting esp with the inclusion of ten knife foot and his depredations whilst staying at the Weary Wayfarer. I think "sharpest edge" just plopped the reader into the action, I much prefered "saber and shadow"'s provision of more details leading up to the hot tub scene rather than starting the book in the hot tub as in the "sharpest edge". Interesting concept for a persistent world and the adventures of two fellows who happen to be female and end up lovers. As far as the cover art "I guess" it's done to attract oversexed adolescents (as they all are). I don't see their clothing as functional for all the rough and tumble and skipping across rooftops, sewer crawling the characters do. Nice legs but too much cleavage.
