Not my cup of tea 2 out of 5 stars.

I've never really been a fan of the Jade Falcon sub-line of Battletech/Mechwarrior novels, and this book is no different. Once again the book focuses on Malvina Hazen, who by most counts qualifies as a villain (as opposed to an anti-hero), as she works to destroy all life in the Inner Sphere. As she grows stronger, her enemies grow dumber, and so she wins time after time.

The parts of the book I liked the most were when they touched upon other events in the Inner Sphere, especially with House Steiner and the Wolves. But they were few and far between.

Editorial Review:

The epic science fiction action saga continues

She has found her vision-and it is of doom...

Jade Falcon Galaxy Commander Malvina Hazen and her warriors are encamped on the planet Skye in their Occupation Zone, overseeing the consolidation of power on the worlds they've wrested from The Republic. When a ship appears at Skye's jump point and its commander declares a Trial of Possession for the wartime doctrine he claims Malvina stole from Clan Hell's Horses, Malvina sees her vision unfolding: she agrees to single BattleMech combat.

Malvina emerges from the fray victorious-and inspired to ride her growing reputation into Clan Jade Falcon's halls of power. But her bold actions may herald the beginning of a civil war that could unmake not simply her own Clan, but the entire Clan way of life.

Review From Mr. Ronto's CCG and RPG Page 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This story has no basic story line, is a jumble of lots of characters, is completely unexpected, and is a great novel! This one of a kind novel is completely a surprise to the reader, because you never know what Zaranda will get into next. One minute things are looking good, and next, she's doomed. Even though the backside of the novel is completely wrong, you still are surprised at every turn. The mix of different kinds of characters is good, but not unique, but they come and go pretty fast. By that I don't mean that they die fast, no, some just leave, and that is definitely unique in a FR novel. The story is serious, but some parts, even intense parts, make you laugh, mostly because of the absurdity of bad things that happen and the ways that they happen. A lot of this story is on the edge excitement or action, and little on romance. But like the novel before it, this one also has aging and not too healthy characters, so adds to the realism. I thought it would be hard to have a novel come close to King Pinch in quality, but War in Tethyr does it. A really good novel, that should be read by every FR fan out there, or just any fantasy novel reader, because this one has something in it for every one.

Editorial Review:

The second installment in the Nobles series introduces the adventures of many striking new characters, who do battle to the death--and beyond--in the Forgotten Realms setting. Original. 75,000 first printing.

Good book, but not enough Mech battles 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book had an all around good plot, but it didn't have any good mech battles until the end. Most of it was just talking.

BOOK GOOD BOOK GOOD 5 out of 5 stars.

Victor Milan did himself proud when he created the Caballeros in Hearts of Chaos and they've come clear to Black Dragon getting wilder all the way. However Subhash dying was a definite minus and Franklin Kurita should have been expanded upon but this is still a first class book

Long live the Kanrei 5 out of 5 stars.

Camacho's Caballeros are an endearing bunch. But the parts I really liked is the development of Ninyu Kerai's character. I've been fascinated with this nekagami-trained ISF operative. Now he comes into his own, becoming a more multi-faceted character instead of a cardboard thug. The role of Franklin Sakamoto was also nicely done. These small things reward Battletech readers who take the trouble of actually completing as much of the series as possible. I'm just sorry Sun-Tzu Lao is now the new First Lord....I'd hope it was Theodore.

Editorial Review:

A deadly mercenary force named Camacho's Caballeros and their ace operative, Cassie Suthorn, attempts to unveil the traitorous Black Dragon secret society before they can succeed in sending the entire Inner Sphere off its course.

Looking for plotting; found plodding 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am an emerging science fiction author. I am also an old fan of the Mechwarrior RPG. I wanted an example of descriptive scifi action to learn from. I made a BAD choice with this book. I forced myself through the first 25 pages and threw this book across the room. Victor Milan's usage of the English language is incomprehensible. It takes him 25 pages to describe three minutes of action - and I use the word "action" loosely. He get's sidetracked in irrelevant topics of internal politics and sordid details of sex between siblings every other paragraph. Victor! Show us the big picture! What's going on?! I don't care about the minutia! You gotta write lean an mean when trying to write action.

I don't know why 4 out of 5 stars.

I don't know why the other people did not like the book, but i did i like it alot but that's my opinion.

A Gem in a Rough Series 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The previous Mechwarrior: DarkAge books were, um, weak. But Flight of the Falcon breathes some new life into the series. Victor Milan is one of the best Battletech writers.

In this book, the Clans come to life again. The Clans you love to hate: vicious, skilled, myopic, relentless. Not the cariatures of the Clans that have inhabited the last several years of BT books.

I will say this though - I am getting really tired of the Tara Campbell character. That is no reflection on Milan though. He works with the material he is given.

Editorial Review:

Great characterization and interpretation 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Milan in _Close Quarters_ gives perhaps the first best characterization of those people living in the Battletech era. The similes and metaphors are totally in-character to the setting, not relying upon contemporary comparisons to make the reader understand. However, while this might normally prevent a reader unfamiliar with the setting and some of the major characters, I think that the preentation is such that even a newcomer could understand without trouble.

My beef is with the characters. The main character is entirely too superhuman in her abilities. Not only is she the best scout and tactician of the regiment, she is also the best hand-to-hand fighter and the fastest runner and everything else. Her only flaw is a lack of emotion, which is the only aspect of her character that might be considered to change during the course of the novel. She becomes friends with people she normally would not, but her growth I feel is very limited. Also, the other characters are either two-dimensional or cliches, like the unit commander grief-stricken over a family-member's death and unable to function to the commander's son desperate to earn pop's approval. Those elements reduce the quality of the overall work. There is the standard combat scenes which are not as good as others in the Battletech series. Also, the story does not really seem to impact the big picture, just those involved directly in the story. In that respect this is not really a "core" novel in the series and is not terribly essential to the overall comprehension. However, as noted above, the perspective of the characters and setting in this might be the best to this point in the series.

This is one to read for a good laugh. 5 out of 5 stars.

I could not help but laugh when I read this book. Victor Milan wrote this book with a great sense of humor which made it that much more enjoyable for me to read. I request that you read this book, you might like as much as I did.

A great book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have to admit, the beginning was a little boring, forcing me to leave the book behind in favor of the others that I had ordered, but when I got a little bit into it, the book was impossible to put down. I loved it, it had great details and a great plotline with great characters. I give it a four because of the beginning.

Great Book! Milan writes outstanding Battletech stories. 5 out of 5 stars.

Milan does a great job in this second book featuring the freewheeling 17th Recon Regiment. Rich in plot (and sub-plots) Milan weaves a compelling story populated with the eccentric and colorful characters of Camacho's Caballeros.

The 17th Recon is unlike any other outfit in or out of the Inner Sphere and Milan's stories require more attention span than some of the one dimensional Battletech books around. But for a good story with some of the best Mech action around you can't beat Hearts of Chaos.

Editorial Review:

Sent to the planet Towne to prevent an invasion by the secret Black Dragon Society, Cassie Suthorn and Camacho's Caballeros find a world that has descended into faction-ridden turmoil, with a hostile population that rejects all outside intervention.

An interesting Suprise 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have to admit, I passed this book many times on the bookshelf (laughing) before I had the nerve to read it. Despite the slightly uncanny title, the book is rather ingenious for its time. Remembering that Milan wrote it during the genesis of the cyber-punk revolution. An interesting tale about the plight to find a theorem for generating randomness. I believe that die-hard C.P. readers will find this early text an interesting read, especially in comparing with more modern works.

It is after World War Three.... 5 out of 5 stars.

...and the world is trying to put itself back together. Japan, which was able to sit out the war, is now the center of civilization. Well, not really. Mega-corporations run the nation, having most of the wealth and having assumed control over their employees. Now they fight against each other, using all the weapons available to gain total power over all Japan. The story focues on one such corporation developing an AI with true self-awareness. They in fact create Tokugawa, the first program with consciousness. They start training it with scenarios and ideas from Japan's past, making him into a Samurai. Little did they know how much he would need the training!

Don't judge by the cover. This is cyberpunk to the max, with advanced computers, cool weapon systems, VR devices and hired mercenaries!

If you liked this book, there is also the second in the series: The Cybernetic Shogun.

An Excellent Work 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Victor Milán managed to synthesize artificial intelligences, post-apocalyptic cyberpunk, and space adventure in this excellent novel. I picked it up almost at random, and was pleasantly surprised by its depth. It takes place in an alternative history to ours, a couple of decades after a NATO-Warsaw Pact Third World War, and just a couple of weeks after a Fourth World War fought by the embittered successor states. In a world where the pre-War Three Great Powers (the US, Soviet Union, China, western Europe) have been devastated, and where the pre-War Four Great Powers (Brazil, Indonesia, Greater Queensland, EasyCo) have fallen into civil war, only Japan has managed to survive intact, as a technological power. The first AI created -- TOKUGAWA -- saved Japan from nuclear war, but killed himself rather than lead Japan into empire. His children, HIDETADA and MUSASHI, manage to throw the world into chaos through their fights, as Japan approaches the point of military coup d'état, Europe becomes a theocracy, and the rest of the world sinks into chaos. MUSASHI -- by far the more benevolent of the two AIs -- tries to launch a starship to let some people escape from the hell that is Earth ... This story isn't the most cheerful that I've read, but it's one of the most complex and downright interesting that I've happened upon. I strongly recommend anyone reading this review to get it, by hook or by crook.

Military SF with an *extremely* hard edge 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the grimmest pieces of Science Fiction I have ever read. I found it to be well written and funny (in an extremely brutal and nasty way). I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys military SF.

Sven Hassel did it first, and better, IMO 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A lot of this book seemed very familiar to me, but I was reading Sven Hassel's novels about the 20th Panzer Penal Unit in World War II years ago. In general, this book is even more of a downer than a lot of Hassel's work; these future-soldiers do their work in a society and army so degrading that Hell itself would be preferable.

Vivid & Grisly 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This isn't a happy ending, enjoyable sort of book - far from it. But after reading a lot of military SciFi, this story sticks tenaciously in my mind, whereas many others quickly fade, and to me, that by itself makes it a noteworthy accomplishment. If you aren't squeamish, and can enjoy a gritty, grisly story about an group of criminals force-drafted into a vicious, bottom-of-the-barrel military outfit, who are abandoned during a botched invasion on a hostile planet, look for this one; otherwise stay away. Personally, I wish the author had written more stories about the CLD.

Editorial Review:

Assigned to overtake a planet that resists the Universal Will of the Stellar Collective, the deathbird kamikaze fighters of the Collective Landing Detachment begins what may be the most terrible battle in the history of the galaxy.
