This is one to read for a good laugh. 5 out of 5 stars.

I could not help but laugh when I read this book. Victor Milan wrote this book with a great sense of humor which made it that much more enjoyable for me to read. I request that you read this book, you might like as much as I did.

A great book 4 out of 5 stars.

I have to admit, the beginning was a little boring, forcing me to leave the book behind in favor of the others that I had ordered, but when I got a little bit into it, the book was impossible to put down. I loved it, it had great details and a great plotline with great characters. I give it a four because of the beginning.

Great Book! Milan writes outstanding Battletech stories. 5 out of 5 stars.

Milan does a great job in this second book featuring the freewheeling 17th Recon Regiment. Rich in plot (and sub-plots) Milan weaves a compelling story populated with the eccentric and colorful characters of Camacho's Caballeros.

The 17th Recon is unlike any other outfit in or out of the Inner Sphere and Milan's stories require more attention span than some of the one dimensional Battletech books around. But for a good story with some of the best Mech action around you can't beat Hearts of Chaos.

Editorial Review:

Sent to the planet Towne to prevent an invasion by the secret Black Dragon Society, Cassie Suthorn and Camacho's Caballeros find a world that has descended into faction-ridden turmoil, with a hostile population that rejects all outside intervention.

An Excellent Work 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Victor Milán managed to synthesize artificial intelligences, post-apocalyptic cyberpunk, and space adventure in this excellent novel. I picked it up almost at random, and was pleasantly surprised by its depth. It takes place in an alternative history to ours, a couple of decades after a NATO-Warsaw Pact Third World War, and just a couple of weeks after a Fourth World War fought by the embittered successor states. In a world where the pre-War Three Great Powers (the US, Soviet Union, China, western Europe) have been devastated, and where the pre-War Four Great Powers (Brazil, Indonesia, Greater Queensland, EasyCo) have fallen into civil war, only Japan has managed to survive intact, as a technological power. The first AI created -- TOKUGAWA -- saved Japan from nuclear war, but killed himself rather than lead Japan into empire. His children, HIDETADA and MUSASHI, manage to throw the world into chaos through their fights, as Japan approaches the point of military coup d'état, Europe becomes a theocracy, and the rest of the world sinks into chaos. MUSASHI -- by far the more benevolent of the two AIs -- tries to launch a starship to let some people escape from the hell that is Earth ... This story isn't the most cheerful that I've read, but it's one of the most complex and downright interesting that I've happened upon. I strongly recommend anyone reading this review to get it, by hook or by crook.

An interesting Suprise 4 out of 5 stars.

I have to admit, I passed this book many times on the bookshelf (laughing) before I had the nerve to read it. Despite the slightly uncanny title, the book is rather ingenious for its time. Remembering that Milan wrote it during the genesis of the cyber-punk revolution. An interesting tale about the plight to find a theorem for generating randomness. I believe that die-hard C.P. readers will find this early text an interesting read, especially in comparing with more modern works.

It is after World War Three.... 5 out of 5 stars.

...and the world is trying to put itself back together. Japan, which was able to sit out the war, is now the center of civilization. Well, not really. Mega-corporations run the nation, having most of the wealth and having assumed control over their employees. Now they fight against each other, using all the weapons available to gain total power over all Japan. The story focues on one such corporation developing an AI with true self-awareness. They in fact create Tokugawa, the first program with consciousness. They start training it with scenarios and ideas from Japan's past, making him into a Samurai. Little did they know how much he would need the training!

Don't judge by the cover. This is cyberpunk to the max, with advanced computers, cool weapon systems, VR devices and hired mercenaries!

If you liked this book, there is also the second in the series: The Cybernetic Shogun.

Military SF with an *extremely* hard edge 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the grimmest pieces of Science Fiction I have ever read. I found it to be well written and funny (in an extremely brutal and nasty way). I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys military SF.

Sven Hassel did it first, and better, IMO 2 out of 5 stars.

A lot of this book seemed very familiar to me, but I was reading Sven Hassel's novels about the 20th Panzer Penal Unit in World War II years ago. In general, this book is even more of a downer than a lot of Hassel's work; these future-soldiers do their work in a society and army so degrading that Hell itself would be preferable.

Vivid & Grisly 4 out of 5 stars.

This isn't a happy ending, enjoyable sort of book - far from it. But after reading a lot of military SciFi, this story sticks tenaciously in my mind, whereas many others quickly fade, and to me, that by itself makes it a noteworthy accomplishment. If you aren't squeamish, and can enjoy a gritty, grisly story about an group of criminals force-drafted into a vicious, bottom-of-the-barrel military outfit, who are abandoned during a botched invasion on a hostile planet, look for this one; otherwise stay away. Personally, I wish the author had written more stories about the CLD.

Editorial Review:

Assigned to overtake a planet that resists the Universal Will of the Stellar Collective, the deathbird kamikaze fighters of the Collective Landing Detachment begins what may be the most terrible battle in the history of the galaxy.

genetic manipulated society 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the most really SF-like Star Trek books in the series. I say this because in this books, next to the normal first contact episodes, the ever present klingon warriors, the torpedo's, the bantering between the 3 leading characters, in this book two interesting alien societies are sketched. Esspecially the strongly individualistic culture of geneticly manipulated humans, that have adopted themselfs to their tasks, their waterful environnement and their own wishes is fascinating.

Editorial Review:
