Definitely the best in the series so far!!! Great!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is, depending on how you count, the seventh novel in the Liaden Universe series. However, Meisha Merlin published two novels, _Local Custom_ and _Scout's Progress_, as one volume (entitled _Pilot's Choice_), and another three novels as one volume, so depending on what editions one buys, there are only four volumes so far. The authors predict a total of seven volumes, so we have more to look forward to. And this book certainly leaves one eager to order anything and everything else they care to write in the series!

It's a good idea, if you're not familiar with the series, to read them all; while this is a rousing good space opera in its own right, it is even better if you have followed the series. You could get by without the _Pilot's Choice_ volume, but you really need, at the very least, _Agent of Change_, _Carpe Diem_, and _Plan B_ to get the most out of _I Dare_. Agent and Carpe are two of the three novels in the _Partners in Necessity_ volume, so if you get that, you'll get _Conflict of Honors_ too. That's the first one I ever read of the series, initially published as individual paperbacks.

The series starts with Er Thom yos'Galen and Daav yos'Phelium, in _Local Custom_ and _Scout's Progress_. _Conflict_ takes up with Shan yos'Galen, Er Thom and Anne's son. _Agent_ takes up Val Con yos'Phelium, Daav and Aelliana's son. The rest of the books so far, including _I Dare_, continue to follow Shan and Val Con, and the various employees, friends and lifemates they drag into the ongoing story of Clan Korval. In _I Dare_ many of the separate threads from the previous volumes come together. We have the Juntavas, the interstellar Mob who actively appeared in _Agent_; we have the return of Daav; we have also Shan and Val Con's cousin Pat Rin as a major character. (That's Val Con and Pat Rin on the cover.) Surebleak, the planet Miri Robertson was born on, suddenly shows up again. Korval has already noticed that the Department of the Interior is trying to take over Liad and eliminate their family; in this book, Korval actively confronts the Department.

A large chunk of the book is taken up with battles and battle strategy; however, this didn't turn me off, even though I'm not that gung-ho on war stories. And there's a larger element of fantasy in this book than in the previous ones, in that more and more people turn out to have psychic powers. I'm not that much of a fan of psychic powers, but I didn't mind them here- it's just one element that keeps the story moving right along. The plot is extremely brisk; don't skip a page!

The end of the book does contain what seems to be a clear lead-in to a next book, since a new character shows up... I won't give away the details. One of the nice things about this book, and this whole series, is that there could be short stories written about it for years to come, because there are so many interesting characters. What exactly was Daav doing all those years at a Terran university? Whatever happened to Aelliana Caylon's younger sister? Can we find out more about Richard Davis, Anne's brother and Shan's uncle? Did Vin Sin chel'Mara ever reform after being exiled? More about Clonak ter'Muelen! Oh, and Nova yos'Galen - by the end of this book, all the current generation are lifemated save her; does she ever get true love? There are a few short stories that were only ever published in chapbooks; if Miller and Lee would write a couple more short stories, there'd be enough for an anthology, and I'd be sure to read it.

It's difficult to convey how much I like this series, and I like this book the best so far. If you like humor, romance, and battle in your science fiction - if, say, you already like Miles VorKosigan (Lois Bujold) - then I'm sure you'll like the Liadens!

Editorial Review:

In the action-packed conclusion to the saga of the Liaden Universe(r), the war between Clan Korval and the sinister Department of the Interior escalates as the DOI attempts to recruit Val Con's less than scrupulous cousin to their cause...

Low Port 1 out of 5 stars.

As a huge Sharon Lee and Steave Miller fan, I did not expect this collection of short stories to be up to their same standard of writing for it was written by many other authors; and as it turned out, it wasn't up to, seemingly, any kind of standard. This book was a complete and utter disappointment. The stories, admittedly are not high rolling, upper echelon situations or people but these short stories were down right dull and sometimes repulsive and that in itself is not from good writing. Even the best of authors can bomb out with an idea for a book or collection of stories and Sharon and Steave should have let it die on their kitchen table. Don't waste your money on it. It is an awful bore of a collection. Buy every single other book of theirs, the Millers, but let this one collect dust somewhere else but in your library.

Editorial Review:

Ever wonder what really happens on the lower decks of the space ship or in the castle kitchen? This unique collection of original science fiction and fantasy short stories focuses on characters that are normally in the background and brings them to the forefront of the adventure! Low Port features stories by Mark Tiedemann, Laura J. Underwood, L. E. Modesitt, Jr., Nathan Archer, Jody Lynn Nye and many others, including a new urban fantasy by Sharon Lee! So come along and meet an orphan with a dream, a dockworker who believes in freedom, a maintenance worker with feelings and visit a soup kitchen with a secret.

Great for old-timers and newbies alike! 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The Dragonlance Saga is the longest-standing TSR series ever, the archetype of "classic" AD&D. With the advent of the SAGA rules system, however, and the absence of Weis and Hickman in the creative process until recently, Dragonlance has taken a turn for the worse. However, this book is a great way to get back to the basics of what made Dragonlance and AD&D great back in the late 80s. Old-timers can play the epic again in a stream-lined, comprehensive book, made new by the inclusion of SAGA-style rules. Classic AD&D rules are also provided, though I recommend giving SAGA a shot, even if you're not into the Fifth Age products. Those new to the Dragonlance series can take part in what made it so great. The Chronicles and Legends novels have seen their third or fourth reprint for good reason.

I do have a few gripes about the material. I suggest that the referee running the adventure be familiar with the novels and make suitable changes as he sees fit. In some ways, this adventure follows the original adventure modules more than it does the novels, meaning that the same inconsistencies exist, even though Dragonlance Classics does include several sections explaining how the plot was advanced in the novels. I advise making some changes to the statistics of the characters to better reflect the novels. If you have any of the expansion material for Fifth Age, you can still use some of it to enhance your use of this product--there are simply a few adjustments to be made, which are not difficult at all.

In short, any Dragonlance or AD&D fan looking for a quality product should seriously consider this one. They are few and far between.

Local Custom Audiobook MP3-CD
Written By Sharon Lee & Steve Miller Narrated By: Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson From Stargate SG1)
Unabridged CD-MP3 Edition

The first of the seven books set in the Liaden Universe tells a rich and sweeping story of warring families and star-crossed lovers in a fantastic, other-world galaxy. Master trader Er Thom knows the local custom of Liaden is to be matched with a proper bride, and provide his prominent clan Korval with an heir. Yet his heart is immersed in another universe, influenced by another culture, and lost to a woman not of his world. And to take a Terran wife such as scholar Anne Davis is to risk his honor and reputation. But when he discovers that their brief encounter years before has resulted in the birth of a child, even more is at stake than anyone imagined. Now, an interstellar scandal has erupted, a bitter war between two families-galaxies apart-has begun, and the only hope for Er Thom and Anne is a sacrifice neither is prepared to make...

Changing the Realms! Yea, but wait awhile. 4 out of 5 stars.
93 of 98 people found this review helpful.

In the wake of the new D&D rules, Wizards has released this(it appears) first supplement that uses the 3rd edition rules for the popular Forgotten Realms world. There are good and bad things; bearing in mind that(to me) the jury is still out as to whether 3rd Edition is wholly successful.

First, the good. The story is an adventure in which the PC heroes will get to revisit a war-ravaged Cormyr in the wake of King Azoun's death. It is a good game line involving loyalty and betrayal, and ceratinly it tries to add to both the Realms gameworld's history and supplement the novel, Death of the Dragon, from which it is based. If you are planning on reading that novel, some spoilers are revealed here! The tale varies from some traditional, Realms fare by providing a distinct, but open storyline to follow. It gives minor side treks to enhance the main story, but also generates numerous foes of various levels to face the heroes. In keeping with Wizards of the Coast "new" approach to Forgotten Realms, Reynolds and Miller have kept more powerful, noted luminaries away(like Alusair, and Vangerdahast) and left the adventurers on their own with a basic mission.

Beyond the developing storyline, they have also managed to do a good job of forming the adventure to the new rules and concepts. For hardline gamers, some of these rules will seem unconventional with the game world, but a little speculation and thought will make them clear. Most importantly, the module tries to emphasize the action over the rules. This is valuable, given that there won't be an official Realms book translating and customizing the 3rd Edition rules until next year! It should have made it possible for old and new players to join in the game as it is set.

Now the bad. In spite of the fine 3rd Edition design, there is some perception here that this was reconfigured mid-stream from the older rules. The rules' framework seem skeletal, at times, on what to do, plus there is very little supplemental material to help in the transition to a 3rd Edition Realms game. Case in point, the priest conversion for Torilian gods are limited to 7 of them! This isn't very much given that in previous Realms material(Faiths & Avatars, etc.)there are probably around 50 unique beings characters can choose from. This wouldn't be so bad if, like other new 3rd Edition modules, this was a 1st or 2nd level adventure to get you used to the system. But this is intended for 10th Level players!

If you are new player, this makes it daunting to try an play advanced character in a new system without all the details or experience. If you are an older player, this means placing your current, likely 2nd Edition, characters through a conversion to the new rules, but lacking all the materials to make them Realmsian players. Clearly, more information would have been helpful to supplment. The assurance that you can make your own designs until the new Forgotten Realms release, and then "tinker" to match these impending new rules isn't comforting if you play with the your "home-made" changes for nearly year and then discover you are all wrong! However, I also realize that it would have bulked up the module beyond its design(plus been costly)!

Besides this awareness, I mention two other things. First is that some your opponents are rather daunting for this offering(given that the idea is to make it 4 10th level characters), especially Mahrlee's Raiders and their Blue Dragon ally! Second, the goblin city of Grodd is a great idea and is well developed, but given the implied urgency(to beat rival foes to the hoard) at this point in the adventure, I was surprised that it is left so open-ended for exploration. Ideas are given on how the characters could explore the city, but it stated that no guidance should be given to keep the characters moving along. Neither of these things are serious flaws, but they do generate some frustration if your are trying to maintain a consistent story.

So to wrap up: A great story and unique characters in the style Forgotten Realms fans will enjoy, but it lacks some foundations in terms of coping with 3rd Edition rules and higher level play. In a way, maybe Wizards of the Coast should have made it the "last" 2nd Edition module and waited to start the Realms anew next year. Long-time Forgotten Realms fans and gamers can probably adjust to their style of play, but newer fans or those committed to using pure 3rd edition rules will have to be flexible and follow your books well. I don't think you can pick it up and go. Maybe wait until next year to order it, when the new Realms sourcebook arrives in town. In the meantime, enjoy the new, Greyhawk-based ones to wet your feet!

Editorial Review:

The King lies dead after a terrible battle against an ancient and powerful dragon. Now treasure seekers gather across the land to find the lost hoard of the dead dragon. Whoever claims the treasure earns the crown of Cormyr! This treasure hunt is precisely the type of adventure that defines the Dungeons & Dragons(r) experience: heroic adversity against formidable foes with untold wealth awaiting the victors.

Size should not be an issue! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I found Such A Pretty Face a delightful romp from one end to the other. I very much enjoyed the concept that someone's size is irrelevant to their personality and abilities. The characters were people first and fat/large/whatever second, something I think more characters (and people) should try. I intend to buy many copies to give as gifts and would recommend this book to anyone who is tired of the fat versus thin stereotypes. These stories prove that there is more to people than just their packaging.

Editorial Review:

Think all heroes have washboard abs? Think all heroines wear Size 3 Junior Petite? Think again! Come join Gene Wolfe, Elizabeth Anne Scarborough, Jane Yolen, Jody Lynn Nye, and Sharon Lee & Steve Miller, who along with nineteen other authors, introduce you to some of the funniest, wildest, sexiest, most powerful, and normal (considering these are science fiction, fantasy, and horror stories) fat people on earth and a few other planets. Meet a pirate named "Valkyrie" and a cardsharp named "Fat Moriah". Meet a xeno-fitness instructor and an earth-mage who don't apologize for taking up space. Meet fat cats on a mission and a very different kind of vampire. Meet characters for whom "plus-size" is about body size and heart. Brought together in this first-of-its-kind collection are stories that raise the set point on adventure and redraw the picture of "the hero" along the way. Tales of power and abundance that prove that heroes and heroines come in all sizes.

Odd set-up detracts from otherwise great book 4 out of 5 stars.

Now, maybe you like having a sidebar at the bottom of almost every page that doesn't directly relate to that page. Some of the time I didn't mind it so much.
But when some of the sidebars go on for several pages, it's quite annoying. WotC may have been better off grouping these lengthy sidebars onto their own pages for easier reading. Such as the case with some of the adventure hooks that span four, five or more pages.
Other than that, this is a great sourcebook. You get coverage of all 3 movies, including charcters, ships, planets and a little beyond. The Ssi-ruk from Truce at Bakura and many of the characters from Shadows of the Empire.
Of course, not much new info is presented on the more well-known characters, but there's been so much written about them, it wasn't really expected. As usual, the place where books like this shine is the amount of info they provide on the backrgound players of the Star Wars galaxy.

Everything you need to know about the Empire and Rebel Alliance from the classic Star Wars universe can be found in this one sourcebook -- from weapon and ship statistics to information on non-player characters. Han Solo, the Death Stars, TIE interceptors, Princess Leia, stormtroopers, Luke Skywalker . . . it's all here in detail.
