It's a witch hunt. Save the innocents! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Heroes are caught in the middle of a massive witch hunt, in which both the overzealous cleric conducting the inquisition and the witches he hunts bring terrible darkness to the land. The heroes must sort out clues, avoid traps set by the opposing sides, and save the innocents from the mob's growing fervor.

A Romp on the Dark Side for Fans of Fantasy Horror 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Domains of Dread takes TSR's popular gothic horror Ravenloft setting and gives it a new soul: an evil one, naturally. Imagine a city whose sewers materialized from another dimension, a heart-eating mummy who retains her beauty, or a lithe and limber Frankenstein's monster as lord over his own land, and you'll start to get an idea of the new and improved Ravenloft.

This expanded version of Ravenloft contains a much wider geography of the Demiplane of Dread, and for the first time includes the option for playing characters who are Ravenloft natives. Included is a chronology that sets all previous Ravenloft publications, whether novels, adventures, or accessories, into context as the history of the current campaign book. Earlier Ravenloft material is also tied in, item-by-item, to each description of a land, realm, island, or kingdom (called domains) and the lord of each region. Enough background is presented so that an inventive dungeon master can proceed from the material given, while those interested in the novels and available adventures may single out which products they may be interested in buying.

Domains introduces four new character classes (avenger, anchorite, gypsy, and arcanist) as well as one new race, the half-Vistani. All changes and effects pertaining to spells, items, and character traits in Ravenloft settings are included, along with special rules applying only to Ravenloft. New sections explain the rewritten fear, horror, and madness checks for characters. However, dungeon masters will find that some of the other Ravenloft products, particularly the Monstrous Compendiums, are necessary in order to use this campaign book.

The emphasis is, of course, on creepy: many of the characters and situations in Domains will be familiar from classical horror literature, with different names of course. Vampires and lycanthropes abound; Dr. Jekyll's spiritual brother is here; and Dr. Frankenstein, as Victor Mordenheim, seems to have acquired an unwanted empathic link with his creation. Other classic characters with a delicious horror twist appear here, such as a domain lord called "Pinocchio" who led his wooden brothers and sisters on a murderous rampage.

A "nice" romp on the dark side for fans of horror and things of the night.

Secrets, No. Some useful Material, Yes. 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As the first real supplement for the new Star Wars Role Playing Game from Wizards of the Coast, `Secrets of Naboo' could have had a little more...well, a little more. `Secrets' is a complete misnomer, because it reveals nothing that could be considered unusual or out of the ordinary. In fact there are no secrets revealed that any moderately dyed in the wool Star Wars fan wouldn't already know. The proper title should have read something like `Fodor's Guide to Naboo', because although it is well written, it reads a little like one of the many country guides available in most book stores today.

It briefly covers both species to the planet-the humans and the gungans, but doesn't go into much detail about either. It talked about how when the humans first arrived on Naboo almost four-thousand years ago they went to war with the gungans because of vast differences, but in the end both races come off as being basically they same-both revere nature, but the Naboo build in harmony around it the gungans build in harmony with it. And the highly artistic, refined and intelligent Naboo view the gungans as backwards, primitive screwheads. It does have some Naboo customs, but most involve the Queen (as if she were the only interesting person on the planet), and what it lacks for either species is diet-what kind of foods do they eat, manufactured goods-what stuff do they make, marriage customs, you know, important stuff.

What it does spell out is that the Naboo are influenced strongly off Plato's Republic and Confucianism-children are constantly tested to see where the aptitude lies and they are placed into the profess. It also said that even the lowliest sanitation workers talked about poetry, and then went on to say that there is rising organized crime, and one is given to wonder if Naboo gangsters discuss politics while they break someone's knees. It doesn't really detail any of the cities other than brief mentions, and the maps are such a complete waste of time that might have not bothered with them at all.

Where it is good were portions on the various flora and fauna-including a section on poisons. All of the animal and monster stats were much appreciated as well. Plus the section on the criminal element on the planet was good, but again it could have done with more detail. And excluding the pictures from the film, all of the interior art and maps are basically worthless. But there just isn't enough meat to this source book, and I am pretty sure they could have filled the last 36 pages of a 96 page book with yet another retelling of the invasion of Theed! Come on, they already have a boxed set- that does just that and the Phantom Menace video game, and it really doesn't matter if this adventure is a little more detailed-it has been done already.

Is it worth owning. Tough call, but I'd say that it is. The game information is quite good and it is a genuinely well-written book. Plus, if you're like me and have to have most things Star Wars, then yes, go buy it. I only hope Wizards can stop fixating on the Phantom Menace.

Editorial Review:

In the Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace movie, fans got a brief glimpse of the distant planet Naboo. Now fans and players of the Star Wars roleplaying game finally have the secrets of Naboo revealed. The first-ever book detailing adventures and source material about the planet, the Campaign Pack lets fans explore Naboo like never before-from the Queens palace to the Gungan underwater city to the Naboo capital. Its a trip no roleplayer or Star Wars fan will want to miss.

Here you'll find: Van Richten's Guide to Fiends, Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani and Van Richten's Guide to Witches . If you are looking for rare monsters you sould look in this accessory.

If you have ALL the guides, you don't have this one! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the one you HAVE to get. I have ALL the Van Richten "Guides", but this one carries the "Guide to Witches" which has never before been published! So, if you thought you had it all, you don't. Don't be fooled, however, with volumes 1 & 2. If you have ALL the Van Richten "Guides", you already have ALL of 1 & 2 and most of 3. The "Guide to Demons" is nothing more than "Van Richten's Guide To Fiends"! It was renamed for these publications. Volume 3 is the one to get!

Next volume, please! 4 out of 5 stars.

The Star Wars Monster Manual 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Wizards of the Coast has gotten a lot of bad flak for their take on the Star Wars Roleplaying Game. I, for one, have been very pleased with most of the books so far. Alien Anthology is no exception. This book contains full-color illustrations and information necessary to run many of your favorite Star Wars aliens as characters including Duros, Zabrak and Gand. It also includes information on other alien creatures such as Banthas and Womp Rats.

You also get creatures rules/classes, new prestige classes, Challenge Codes for multiple creatures and a table listing the ages for all the aliens (similar to that in the Core Rulebook).

All-in-all a very useful book for any Star Wars gamer.

Editorial Review:

Like the Dungeon & Dragons(r) Monster Manual, this product contains detailed statistical information that will give Gamemasters new options for nonplayer characters to include in their campaigns. The species descriptions also afford players opportunities to play the aliens as player characters. This is the ?rst collection of fascinating aliens and creatures from the Star Wars galaxy. It contains statistics and other information that will be fundamental to any Star Wars campaign, as well as be useful to any other campaign that uses the d20 system, such as the Dungeons & Dragons game.

An excellent introduction to VtDA 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I completely disagree with the other two reviewers. Clash of Wills is an excellent starting point for a VtDA chronicle. My only complaint is that's it's way too short (short but sweet :-)).

As for the plot: there are many possible branches (the book explains what to do for each different choice), the players aren't forced to do anything, and some events may indeed take place wether the PCs are there or not. But that's the way I like it, I don't want the story to be shoved down the player's throats no matter what they do. They will have to face the consequences for their actions (or inaction) later...

Sure, it's no story for experienced elder characters, but they should be playing something like Transylvanian Chronicles anyway to prove their salt's worth :-)

A nice try 3 out of 5 stars.

If you need information on the lords of medieval England's Long Night, it's here. If you're looking for an adventure set in medieval England's Long Night, well, you might want to think twice.

This adventure is strictly linear -- the same events will occur whether the players try to counter them, try to promote them, or go on pilgrimage to Rome instead of playing this adventure. If your group prefers linear gaming, you'll probably like "Clash of Wills". If not, you will need to do a lot of editing before you run it; and it might be just as easy to write your own adventure.

A visit with old friends. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Lee and Miller have done it again.
Yes, these wonderful stories were published individually elsewhere, but this is their first publication together in a quality hardback edition.
These back stories, prequels, and epilogs to the Liaden Universe books are refreshing, and give us insight into some of our favorite character's motivations.
If you have never read a Lee & Miller book, you are in for a rare treat. You will enjoy these well-written, human, incredibly real characters.
I'd give it 10 stars if possible!

The North Unveiled 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great step upward from the first Gazetter and does an excellent job of portraying the Northern Lands of Ravenloft. The book discusses the domains of Necropolis, Darkon, Lamordia and Falkovnia. The author provides numerous potential starting points for adventures as well as ideas for developing the attitudes and histories of people from these lands. Also, the book gives insights into the newly returned Azalin and raises questions about why Azalin is interested in collecting information about all the different domains. I found the descriptions about Necropolis to be particularly useful since I have been eager to discover the nature of that domain. Altogether the book is an important addition to the Ravenloft collection and I encourage anyone who is interested in running a campaign in the northern realms to add this book to their library.

Good from begining to end. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Second of the Gazetteer's is an absoulutly solid product, We get an update and a real good look at one of the largest domains in Ravenloft, Darkon. Also are some really detailed looks at Necropolis, Lamordia, and Falkovnia. My personal favorite was Lamordia as I have always been interested in getting a closer look at the land of Mordenheim and Adam. Also the Who's Doomed section of this Gazetteer is packed. Not only the Darklords but 5 other personalities of note,(though you kinda figure Mordenheim as half a Darklord i guess.) I hope they keep pumping out products of this caliber..

Last Call for Rloft a good one? Yes and no... 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Being a collector as well as a player and fan of Ravenloft, I have seen every encarnation of the realm, from the lamest "belfry" mod, to the unequalled "roots of evil". If this happens to be the last hooray for official products, then the swan song for the realm is a bit of a plain jane.

In essence, this book tries too hard to do too much. The stories are rushed at times, and not as fleshed out as they could have been, had this been a collection of tales and legends, as the title claims. The game information is confusing at best, and absolutely unnecessary at worst. Dont get me wrong, any Rloft dm worth his/her weight in blood should be able to use a lot of what this book provides, but by giving an endless array of options on how to turn the legends into adventures, the authors take away from the legends themselves, and the most important element of any Rloft product, the gothic horror, gets lost amid shortened stories, lackluster villans, and a completly inexcusable myriad of spelling errors, run-on sentences, and gramatical aberrations. Quite frankly, the only horror within these pages is the one suffered by the reader as he tries to keep his/her inner monologue from sounding like a total illiterate.

Please forgive if I sound irate, but were the editors on strike when this product shipped? I have never seen a rloft book or module so poorly edited.

For this and the consistent lack of focus, I can only recommend this product as merely mediocre. Being a fan and collector of the genre, I could not stay away from it, but if your passion is not as intense as mine, I would suggest you look elsewhere for your Rloft fix.
