Not the greatest, but still satisfying 5 out of 5 stars.

I can't say im a big fan of Marvel in general and X-titles are usually unapealing to me, but i am a fan of Mike Allred. Based on my love for Mike Allred's own Madman, i decided to give X-Force a chance and bought the hardcover version which collects the tpbs as well as some other extras. I wasnt disapointed, the writing by Peter Milligan is decent, better than 80 percent of whats out there at least, and Mike Allred's drawing style is clean, and uniquely his own. Laura Allred's colors are, as always, astoundingly bright and beautiful.

The story telling in X-Force is fast paced and teeming with satire. All in all, the book manages to be interesting and hold one's attention, but Id recomend you run to your local comic book store and leaf through the first few pages of the first trade paperback to see if this is really your bag, as the book deals with mature subjects and contains tons of graphic death scenes.

This is a good book and a good value 4 out of 5 stars.

I really liked this series. I especially like how this hard cover collects the entire run of Milligan/Allreds X-Force into one easy to read volume. Peter Milligan and Mike Allreds work is very spectacular! I had sworn off of Marvel books around 8 years ago but I could not resist the work of two of my favorites. Peter Milligans writing is quick, witty and interesting and I love Mike Allreds drawing style. My only gripe about this book was that the last issue of the series/collection was drawn by Duncan Fegredo and his artwork is possibly some of the worst artwork I have ever seen in any book. After reading through this large collection it was a bit of a letdown to have the "FINAL ISSUE" be drawn in such a haphazard way. I am serious. A third grader could have drawn the book more enjoyably than Duncan Fegredo! His "artwork" is a big detraction and to me, held this book back from being 5 stars. That being said I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes irreverant heroes to read.

Bullseye! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Christopher Chance was a soldier-of-fortune, a man who would disguise himself as someone marked for death then step in front of a bullet, betting his life that his skills and mind were sharp enough not only to save his life but the life of the person that had hired him as well. People called him the Human Target, and the nickname stuck. However, no one could ever guess at the huge price Chance had to pay to become someone else. The Human Target didn't just change his looks when he assumed an identity; he also changed his thoughts and feelings, becoming the person he was trying to protect. Now, Chance is semi-retired and he has a young protégé named Tom McFadden stepping into his shoes. Only Tom is struggling with the whole Human Target gig too-struggling so much that he sometimes forgets who he is and can't remember how to be who he really is. Earl James is a militant black preacher drawing a line in the sand against the local drug dealers, headed up by Dee Noyz. Emerald is an assassin-for-hire, every bit as dedicated and driven as Christopher Chance, and she's been contracted to kill the Human Target. Christopher Chance is caught in the middle of a vicious crossfire: he wants to save himself and Tom McFadden, who feels he must save Earl James. At the same time, Chance has to stay out of the line of fire from Emerald and Dee Noyz. Chance is working against the clock. How can he find the man he trained-someone who can be anyone?

Christopher Chance, the Human Target was first created back in the 1970s by Len Wein and Carmine Infantino as a series of eight-page and ten-page backup features in ACTION COMICS, DETECTIVE COMICS, and THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD. Rick Springfield portrayed Chance in a seven-episode television series in the 1990s. Peter Milligan brought Chance back to life for the cutting-edge Vertigo line at DC Comics. Milligan has also written HUMAN TARGET: FINAL CUT, the X-Force monthly comics series, ENIGMA, THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF CYCLOPS AN PHOENIX, CATWOMAN DEFIANT, and SKIN. Edvin Biukovic, the artist on the graphic novel, passed away but left a body of work as his legacy that includes: STAR WARS-THE LAST COMMAND, STAR WARS: X-WING ROGUE SQUADRON THE PHANTOM AFFAIR, GRENDEL TALES: DEVILS AND DEATHS.

HUMAN TARGET is a graphic novel that satisfies on numerous levels. For old-time nostalgia fans, the reappearance of Christopher Chance-though in a very different and dark incarnation-is a welcome marriage between the old and the new. The original idea of someone willing to risk his life by being someone else is simple yet fascinating, and all the storytelling is very human. Milligan succeeds brilliantly in bringing that humanness to his story. The fact that every character in this book is driven by needs and emotions that erupt from the core of his or her being is powerful. All of the characters are at once strong and complete, but each one carries his or her faults and the seeds of his or her destruction. The secondary characters in the story-McFadden's wife, Earl James' wife, Emerald's husband, Dee Noyz's old girlfriend-all contributed to the bullet-slick pacing and the emotional implosions that come at the climax. Biukovic's art is phenomenal, an array of lights and darks and fiery colors that dropkick images and action from the pages. The bullet-riddled cross left after the attack in the church and Dee Noyz's attempt to keep Earl James from getting shot by an assassin are stark and moving. Biukovic was as at home with penciling action scenes as he was in penciling simple scenes such as when Becky McFadden was talking with Chance and hanging out her laundry. The plot is convoluted and takes close reading, but is a gem of suspense and building anticipation.

Although Milligan somewhat covered Christopher Chance's background, a little more was needed. Where did Christopher Chance come from? Why did he get into the line of work that he did? Where did he get his training in martial arts and in disguise? Where did he find Tom McFadden? How did he train McFadden? Although these missing pieces don't spoil the overall story, their presence would have been welcome.

Fans of Greg Rucka, Brian Michael Bendis, and Ed Brubaker will want to add HUMAN TARGET to their reading list. Also, anyone interested in seeing what Vertigo Comics is capable of producing in the way of crime fiction for the mature reader will find no better introduction than this graphic novel.

It's better to burn out than to fade away 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

X-Statix vs. the Avengers contains three story arcs. One is "The Cure", the next is "X-Statix vs. the Avengers" and the final issue of the series, which is in a league of its own.

In the Cure, which reprints X-Statix #19 & 20, Myles Alfred, Vivisector decides to `cure' himself of his mutant gene, in order to make a normal life for himself with his new lover and to please his parents. In the end, he learns that not only is the grass not greener on the other side, but the price of his actions could be more than he, or X-Statix can pay.

In X-Statix vs. The Avengers, which reprints X-Statix #21-25, more of Doop's mysterious background and power capacity is revealed, but it leads to Doop's brain exploding. Both the X-Statix and the Avengers (who want Doop for themselves) chase around the world and battle each other for the brain pieces. Some truly funny moments happen. The fight between Mr. Sensitive and Iron Man is worth the price of the graphic novel.

Then, in the final issue, X-Statix #26, everyone is getting ready to disband the team that has brought them wealth and recognition. But one final payday proves to be a proposal that is too tempting to walk away from. And, much like other X-Statix tales, this one doesn't have that happy of an ending....

Milligan and Allred poured their hearts into this series, and it shows. This graphic is one of the strongest in the X-Statix line, and would make a fine addition to any comic collectors graphic novel shelf.

Recommended.

A tragic tale of how Mister Sinister came to be 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is the tragic story about the origin of Sinister. Scott Summers and Jean Grey are brought back to the Victorian age. It was when Sinister was still known as Nathaniel Essex: A brilliant scientist, who was way too obsessed with reaching his goal: Creating the perfect species. He even puts his neglected wife aside in the name of science.

Other scientists slam his ideas and he only meets failure when trying to pursue his goal. But then he meets En Sabah Nur, also known as the evil mutant Apocalypse - Who tells him there is a way for him to do it. All Nathaniel has to do is choose between that or the love of his caring wife.

This is a very good story about love, the difficult choice this man had to make and how he came to the decision he eventually made. After years and years of hating Mister Sinister for everything he's done to the X-Men... You find that he's had a heart once. And I couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for the guy. They did Sinister good with this story. The writing is great. The thoughts, emotions and distant relationship between Nathaniel Essex and his wife Rebecca are done marvellously. The events can be shocking at times (don't ever browse through a comic book quickly!!!)

The art is very dark and contains alot of shadows - which works very well for this setting and story. It sets the mood for the story just right. Some might take a while to get used to the style, but that happens pretty quick once you get deep into the book.

If you've loved the love story of "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm", I'd recommend this. I would probably be sorry for saying this, but... It made me shed a tear :o)

Got To Love KANO!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Anyone whos ever read 2000ad will definitely love this pretty gruesome book. Lots of great artwork & great characters. the only problem that i have with this book is that the description doesn't seem to tell u that the book is in B&W. Other than that, a great read...

Average follow up to fantastic story 3 out of 5 stars.

Bad Company: Kano is part 2 of the Bad Company story, the first part which is incorporated in "Goodbye Krool World" which is an essential collectors item for any 2000AD or graphic novel afficionado. The graphics are almost as good here, but the story wanders, retreading old ground. The depths of Kano's inner conflicts are plumbed, and it just leads more firmly to the conclusion that the best material was in the first volume. If you love volume 1 you should get this for completeness, but get vol 1 first.

Volume 1 = 5 STARS
Volume 2 = 3 STARS

Book 1 details the wonderful story of Danny Franks and his recruitment into Kano's Bad Company on planet Arrat. The second half of book 2 involves a quest by Danny Franks to destroy the Krool heart ending the reign of the Krool. It is in black and white. It begins at prog 500-519, 548-557, 576-585.

To clarify, book 2 is in mixed colour and black and white, depending on the original episodes as they appeared in the pages of 2000AD progs 828-837, and 1273-1277. It involves two separate stories, one involving Kano on a strange planet with ghosts of his former Bad Company colleages, then in a mission to return and confront Danny Franks, who became the Krool heart at the end of book 1.

Book 1 is fantastic. Get that book and then think twice about book 2.

Conspiracy theories and Skateboards 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In X-Statix: Back From the Dead, which reprints X-Statix #11-18, there a couple of small stories, and then one very interesting multi story arch.

In Introducing El Guapo, which reprints X-Statix #11, we meet the newest member of the team, who had both the guys and girls of X-Statix falling all over themselves to be with him.

In I See Dead People, which reprints X-Statix #12, we meet a very disturbed coroner who has a number of issues both in his own life and in his family. Just how much he loves the dead is not matter to be discussed in a public forum, and this is something that Dead Girl cannot tolerate.

In Back From the Dead, which reprints X-Statix #13-18, pop singing sensation Henrietta Hunter was killed, and comes back to life through sheer force of will. However, the people who killed her will do almost anything to return her to her grave. Matters are complicated even more when it's revealed she's a mutant and takes over leadership of X-Statix. This is Milligan and Allred's take on Princess Diana and it is very interesting, indeed. The last panel of this story scared me, which isn't easy to do, given my love of horror comics in general. Spider-Man also guest appears for all of you web-heads out there.

Allred and Milligan deliver yet another strong addition to the X-Statix library.

Recommended.
