Gorgeous book with easy to follow story. 5 out of 5 stars.

My 5 year old loved the movie so I bought this book and it is/was a big hit. Even though it is rather long for a childrens book each page isn't too wordy as some can be and the illustrations are a beautiful as the movie's animation.

Love the chicken feet on the castle! 4 out of 5 stars.

I saw the movie, Howl's Moving Castle, and then saw the picture book advertised. As I am a teacher-librarian in a high school, I decided to buy the book to put in the school library. I found the pictures bright and eye-catching, and I knew that our students do a study of picture books in English in their senior years. The castle also links very strongly to the story of Baba Yaga, whose house was on chicken feet, although it was a much darker abode. One of the seniors has reserved the book already, so I think my decision has been vindicated. Also, the book is much more appealing than the text version, although the text version does explain some of what happens to Sophie. I highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Add Howl's Moving Castle to this list of must-have movie books. Director Hayao Miyazaki is a master storyteller and his films have all become classics of animation. There's no better way to preserve the magic of Howl and his flying castle than by adding this delightful volume to your home library.

My Neighbor Totoro is great! It is a very humorous story, filled with many cute characters! The totoro series would be great for anyone looking for something to read, or just for laughs. It is truly a magical journey in every page.

Wonderful movie depicted on paper! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is such a nice book that depicts the last part of the movie vividly (make sure to collect vol. 1~4 for a complete set). It's nice to have watched the movie first, and then own the book so you'll enjoy and understand the whole story even when there's no dialog. I can watch the movie over and over again, but with the books, I get to review any part of the movie any time and any where I like, and it's very lovable for all ages, boys or girls, guaranteed!

"Aren't you even going to knock?" 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Having little or no will power, I have succumbed to the temptation to pick up more of these little specialty manga created from the cells of Hayao Miyazaki's latest anime creation, 'Spirited Away.' This film has been a runaway bestseller in Japan, and is due for release in the US shortly. When I bought the first volume as a novelty, my greatest concern was that the books would 'spoil' the plot. However, after reading two volumes, I find I'm even more interested in seeing the film, which looks every bit as remarkable as 'Princess Mononoke,' another Miyazaki hit.

These are the story of Chihiro Ogino, a young girl whose parents have inadvertently wandered into a bathhouse for spirits and been turned into pigs. Chihiro is determined to rescue them and discovers that she must find a job in the bathhouse or suffer the same fate of her parents. This volume is the story of her quest for employment, starting with the spider-like Kamaji who runs the hot water system to the giant Yubaba who is the matron of the resort. One has to admire Chihiro's determination, even though she is actually a bit irritating in a little girl way. Of course, I might be a bit self-centered and panicky if I found myself in the comic version of Motel Hell.

The styling is classic Miyazaki, with great work on the expressions of both the human and non-human characters. These last come in every shape and type imaginable. The dialog is minimalist. Often, the plot is moved forward by the visual story, full of both menace and sight gags. Another thing I like is, since the sound effects are in Japanese, someone has gone to the immense trouble of providing a frame-by-frame translation of them. Just the thing for an adult who wants to read these aloud to a child.

One warning. These manga done in Japanese order [right to left, top to bottom]. At first, this is a bit confusing, but after a while, it gets to be fun. In addition, it preserves the effect of the original manga page layouts, which really is the best way to present them. If these manga aren't over-distributed, then they may very well be eminently collectable.

Editorial Review:

Hayao Miyazaki is probably best known in the West for his films; My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service are celebrated for their lavish animation and sophisticated treatment of their young heroes. But among his many fans in Japan, his epic manga tale, Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind, which Miyazaki later made into a animated movie, is often cited as his greatest work. Indeed, the Comics Journal once described the first volume as "the best graphic novel ever." Many critics favorably compare the story to such fantasy classics as C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia or J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

In Nausicaä, as in most of his work, Miyazaki centers his narrative on a strong young woman who struggles to create peace in a world torn by war. Readers of Homer's The Odyssey will recall that Nausicaä is the name of the Phoenician princess who healed Odysseus when he washed up on her shores. Miyazaki took that character as the inspiration for his Princess Nausicaä, but their worlds could not be further apart. Underscoring the book's deep ecological messages, Miyazaki's Nausicaä is a passionate defender of the natural world, and her ability to commune with the creatures of the forest appears almost magical. As a princess, she is testing the waters of leadership as her father languishes on his deathbed. As a citizen of the Valley of Wind, she has mastered reading the shifting wind currents and air pockets as she navigates the skies in her glider.

Readers learn at the beginning of her tale that the Earth has become a hostile place. Environmental crises have made the forest--known as the Sea of Corruption--into a kingdom of spores and giant insects called Ohmu. The remaining humans huddle in the valleys and sheltered cities while holding on to the remnants of technologies long-since rendered mysterious. Now, the Imperial family has begun a massive campaign to extend its hold on the remaining pockets of civilization. However, intrigue between the reigning Princess Kushana and her brothers suddenly place Nausicaä and her people at the center of a civil conflict that could extinguish the last people on earth. With the grandeur of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and the grace of Miyazaki's Totoro, Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind is a classic of fantasy literature and one of the finest works ever in the comics medium. --Patrick O'Kelley

Wonderful Graphic Novel Of Wonderful Movie! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite film makers. It is a wonder to behold and these graphic novels - in full color, help recreate the movie in a wonderful way. I like them for the students in my class and they read them again and again. My kids are learning English so they are very excited about these books and it makes them easy for the students to read. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Set in the Japanese countryside of the lawless and chaotic Muromachi Period, Princess Mononoke is the story of a young man's quest to reconcile the powerful forces of human civilization and industry with the need to live harmoniously in the natural world. It is a time when Samurai warriors raid each others' territories whenever they sense weakness or advantage. Men and women driven from areas of conflict have begun to eke out their livings in even the most remote forests where the gods of old still rule the land.

Editorial Review:

It was the Age of Iron: a time when mankind was just starting to understand its ability to exploit the world and its natural resources. But a war was brewing--a war between a village of iron miners and the animal gods of the surrounding forest. The villagers unwittingly found themselves in a dangerous situation they didn't totally understand.

The only hope for peace lay with a young girl named Princess Mononoke. Raised by wolves and calling the forest her home, she was in a unique position to bridge the gap between the two factions. Together with a boy carrying the curse of a rampaging boar god, she must find a way to bring peace to a world on the brink of eternal conflict.
