Editorial Review:

Brand-new contributions to the hoard of dragon lore by five top fantasy authors.

Orson Scott Card’s “In the Dragon’s House” is a gothic yarn about the mysterious dragon that lives in the wiring of an old house, noticed by a young boy who shares its body in dreams and feels its true size and power.

Mercedes Lackey’s “Joust” tells the story of a slave boy who is chosen to care for a warrior’s dragon—a dragon whose secrets may be the key to his freedom.

Tanith Lee’s “Love in a Time of Dragons” is a fable is imbued with her signature atmosphere—Old World, moody, erotic—as a kitchen maid goes a-questing with a handsome champion to slay the local drakkor.

Elizabeth Moon’s “Judgment” tells the tale of a young man forced by lies to flee his village . . . into an adventure of dwarfs and dragonspawn.

Michael Swanwick’s “King Dragon” invokes a truly sinister and repellent creature—a being with the soul of a beast and the body of a machine—part metal, part devil . . . all merciless.

The story ended before it started. 3 out of 5 stars.

In "Deed of Paksenarrion" there was very little explanation of the Girdish religion, so when I discovered this book I was very excited to learn more. It was very disappointing, though. Much of the plot didn't make sense to me (why, for example, is Luap so revered if Gird never even trusted him?), and it seemed like I was always waiting for character development to end and story to start. Actually, the first part of the book detailing Gird's rise to power was fairly good. The second part was the major disappointment. I would suggest reading this book only if you are very curious about the characters, or if you can't not finish a series. Deed of Paksenarrion is a much better read.

Inspiring! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a prequel to Moon's DEED OF PAKSENARRION. It is every bit as good and, in some respects, even better. That is no small accomplishment.

The DEED trilogy tells the story of the paladin, Paksennarion. It is a wonderful story but it is based upon a created mythos of the land in which the character lives. Central to much of it is the yeomen, marshals and paladins of Gird. We learn only a little of Gird in that series but it is enough to whet the appetite. With SURRENDER NONE, the appetite is sated.

Gird is a peasant treated cruelly and unjustly by his feudal overlords. Finally, he is forced into outlawry but chooses not to follow the path of the brigand. He instead tries to make things better. He works for the betterment not only of his own people but even their oppressors as well and leads a peasant revolt. Unlike that of Spartacus, his succeeds.

This is a work of fantasy but, as in Moon's other works, the fantastic elements are understated. There are gnomes and mentions of dwarves and elves but they are accessories. Magic does play a role and is even one of the reasons for the struggle portrayed within the book but the story is not of the magical; it is of the people. That in itself is magical.

It is a wonderful read all the way around.

Editorial Review:

Looking to her liberator, Gird, who enabled her to become the finest paladin her world had ever known, Paksennarrion learns the story of Luap, Gird's sworn follower and the king's illegitimate son.

Very Surprising 1 out of 5 stars.

After reading the author's Paksannarion series I had fairly high hopes that this would at least be a book with a fair amount of pace and a decent storyline, even if the characters - like the Paks series - were to be somewhat lacking. No such luck. The characters barely approach the one dimensional, while the story - if you can call it that - moves along with all the speed of the erosion of granite being weathered by drizzle.
If you find watching an oak tree growing too exciting, then this is probably the book to help calm your nerves. Astonishingly tedious and utterly dire.

Editorial Review:

Fleet officer Heris Serrano came from a family of Fleet officers, so when a lying superior forced her to resign, life lost all meaning. To pay the bills, she became "Captain" of a rich old lady's interstellar luxury yacht, adding insult to injury. But Cecelia, the rich old lady, had more brains than most admirals Heris had known, and before it was all over, Heris would have a chance to rejoin her beloved space navy -- if she could manage to stop an invading armada.

Continuing a Heroic Line 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Heris Serrano trilogy ended with Serrano beating the bad guys and getting back into the fleet. A fairly minor character who helped her to do that at the end of the 3rd book was Lt. Esmay Suiza who participated in a mutiny in order to recapture her ship from a treasonous captain. After being the senior surviving officer of that mutiny, she led her ship back to help Serrano defeat the enemy. This character is the central person of this story.

Mutinies, however justified, how looked at with jaundiced eyes by naval authorities. Although she was fully exonerated, there is still a taint to Suiza's name and, after the court martial, she finds herself stuck on a depot ship. She demonstrates her talents, though, when the bad guys try to capture the ship along with all of its stores and supplies. Even in her lowly rank, she finds that she has among the most combat experience of anyone on board. That redeems her in some eyes and is continued cause for suspicion in others.

This is a good book, every bit as good as Heris Serrano. If you liked it, you will likely enjoy this one too.

Editorial Review:

When Esmay Suiza found herself in the middle of a space battle, the senior surviving officer, she had no choice but to take command and win. She didn't want to be a hero, but Once A Hero....

What a disappointment! 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I discovered Elizabeth Moon when she wrote Sassinak. I loved the Deed of Paksenarrion and have have mixed (but mostly positive) reactions to the rest of her books. This, though...this was a bitter disappointment.

I love psychological studies. I usually like books with unlikable main characters. But there must be a point to the book. It must GO somewhere or DO something. This book promises and teases, but in the end, there is nothing.

This is a book that needed a fight. This book was desperate for a climax, a turning point, some action. Whether political or physical, this book just flat needed a real conflict, not the mess of never-resolved semi-conflicts with a weak deus ex machina device at the end.

This book needed a story, but it had none. It was too toothless for a tragedy, too wandering for a saga, too diffuse for a character study.

What a disappointment. I can't believe I bought this new. Never again! Elizabeth Moon is going firmly into my "used only" category until I find something of hers to be a lot more enthusiastic about.

Editorial Review:

Putting Women in their Place-As Heroes of the Fantasy genre 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is Marion Zimmer Bradley's third anthology of sword and sorcery fiction devoted to stories where women are the protagonists. They come in many forms, warriors, thieves, mages, healers, wise-women, adventurers and wanderers. MZB sticks to her guns throughout-these are not romances, nor are they stories where women are the sidekicks, or simply women to be overcome by a more powerful male. Instead, this anthology holds a wide range of stories, and an infinitely wide range of heroines. Since the first Sword and Sorceress anthology, these stories became increasingly popular, so that MZB had received rampant submissions for this third anthology from hopeful writers. Most of her intro delves into her editing methods, and what she expects from a story. Readers get to see a bit of the process behind selection, as well as MZB's sharp and humorous personality that I personally found delightful.

MZB once more serves up a range of voices; from familiar returning favorites, to brand new first sales. Probably one of the most noteworthy new authors, in my opinion, is Mercedes Lackey. "Sword Sworn" is, I believe, Misty's debut as a published author, and is certainly the first introduction to her unforgettable mercenary heroines, Tarma and Kethry who are the protagonists of Lackey's later novels; OATHBOUND and OATHBREAKERS. Lackey has gone on to quite a career since then, but even this first short story showcases her talents as a writer. As to returning favorites, MZB has included an interesting tale of a dragon and a young nature-wizard "Dragon Amber" by Deborah Wheeler (noteworthy, in part because Bradley tends to dislike any sort of `cliché' dragon story), "Valley of Shadow" by Jennifer Roberson, "Journeytime" by Dana Kramer-Rolls, "Marwe's Forest" by Charles Saunders, and "The Mist on the Moor" by Diana L. Paxson.

"Journeytime" by Dana Kramer-Rolls, "The River of Tears" by Anodea Judith, and "Sword Sworn" by Mercedes Lackey are more serious ventures, dealing with the transformation of character and the journey, both physical and spiritual, these characters make. Unlike her first two anthologies, number three has a greater number of serious stories, the balance of humor is not as prevalent, still there are one or two that lighten the mood. "Orpheus" by Mary Frances Zambreno is about an unusual pair of women adventurers sent to retrieve a soul from the underworld, and "Bargains" by Elizabeth Moon where the bargains in question, may be no bargain at all.

Among my favorites is "A Tale From Hendry's Mill" by Melisa Carpenter, an interesting take on the `rape and revenge' theme, and one very likable heroine. "More's the Pity" by L. D. Woeltjen is a haunting tale that works its spell very effectively in a few short pages. As mentioned above, "Sword Sworn" by Mercedes Lackey is her introduction to two female mercenaries, and a powerful story of both sword and sorcery-and vengeance. Perhaps the most intriguing story is Jennifer Roberson's "Valley of the Shadow". It's one you'll just have to read.

All of the stories in this anthology are strongly written and well selected, although there are quite a few longer, more serious pieces than in the last two anthologies. I still consider this collection worth five stars, but could have wished for one or two shorter humorous pieces interspersed in the mix. For any reader who enjoys reading stories about women in fantasy, this is definitely a good place to find them! If you have read this anthology and have enjoyed it, I highly recommend finding the first two anthologies-they're just as well written!

Happy reading! ^_^ --shanshad

An excellent book 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Anne McCafffrey and Co. have written an excellent space opera - as good as any that I've read (and I've read alot!) Sassinak keeps you excited as she works her way through the ranks and outsmarts the bad guys. Lunzie isn't as much of a page turner, but that's just me. It left me wanting more.

(Elizabeth Moon's Sporting Chance and Once a Hero series' are a good read and very similar world too)

Generation Warrior 5 out of 5 stars.

Great read...This is truly a space series that grabs leaving you wanting more. Its a story complete with strong hearted women that equals the Hononr Harringtons of the SF world. The Techie language is managable and the problems these women face who have been suspended in spcae for years appear to be real. I gave my copies of this series away and now wish I still had them for a reread!

Editorial Review:

The fate of the galaxy is placed in the hands of Lunzie, who discovers the true nature of a new friend; Fordeliton, who is dying of a mysterious poison; Dupaynil, who is exiled; and Aygar, who tries to prove himself. Reissue. AB.

mega authors in publishing shame scandal! 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

How Mccaffrey and Moon didn't die from embarrassment when this was published I'll never know. Perhaps they didn't actually read it? Perhaps the editors just relied on the wonderful reputations of the authors and didn't actually read it? I recommend you do the same and don't actually read it. Pick any book in the Honor Harrington series instead if you wish to see how this story should have been written. Note to self: once your reputation is made as a mega author, you can make money from publishing eclectic drivel.

Loose and Rather Limp 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I read this book because I had just finished Moon's Heris/Esmay series and wanted more. I was pretty disappointed. While the premise of this novel was a good one-- slave girl turning her life around to rise up in Fleet-- it didn't live up to its potential.

The novel is divided into four parts, and in part one, the plot starts out steadily enough. I actually devour all of Parts one and two in a matter of hours. But then, in my opinion, the plot starts to slow down. The storyline loosens, and if you pay attention, you can find loopholes everywhere. The authors also don't do that great a job of advancing character development. As a result, a lot of loose ends are left hanging, not in a good way either. For instance, take the way it was insinuated that Sass and Ford had had a previous relationship and that they might re-enter that even though Sass didn't feel ready for it. The authors never really followed up with that thought.

Its stuff like that that makes this book a big disappointment. Both McCaffrey and Moon are much better authors than this work seems to suggest.

Editorial Review:

Sassinak was 12 when the raiders came. That made her just the right age: old enough to be used, young enough to be broken. Or so the slavers thought. But Sassy turned out to be a little different . . . and bided her time to become the fleet captain of a pirate-chasing ship of her own. Original.

The worst has happened: Fleet is tearing itself apart. Some of the mutineers see injustice in the unequal spread of the rejuvenation drugs that offer virtual immortality to the rich; others are simply thirsty for power, or for blood. The Loyalists, meanwhile, fight desperately to preserve the rule of law in Familias Regnant space.
