Great, concise storytelling 5 out of 5 stars.

"Fabulous Harbors" is a perfect introduction to Moorcock's "multiverse", a place where horror, fantasy and heightened realism sit side by side. Fans of Elric will enjoy seeing their favorite hero reimagined in a twentieth century fashion as Ulrich Von Bek. Other highlights include the mysterious and beautiful Rose Von Bek and her quest for a stolen ship. I liked this book because of the author's "Let's throw everything in, including the kitchen sink" approach to storytelling. If you like such contemporary fantasists as Jonathan Carroll and Clive Barker, you might want to give this book a try.

Super Reader 3 out of 5 stars.

An collection of stories exploring the Von Bek family, and their search for and occasional search for the Grail, as well as their ability to enter both the First and Second Ether, at times.

Various other characters are encountered, and the Beggs are involved quite a bit, especially Sexton, and his consultancy on Baker Street. Elric and Jerry Cornelius are to be found here as well.

Editorial Review:

Eleven interlocking tales return readers to the alternate universe created in Blood and follow the adventures of the Grail-linked Beggs and von Beks, captive virgins, villains, monsters, Jerry Cornelius, and others.

An excellent overview of Fantasy novels from 1726 to 1987 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Fantasy is much older than Science Fiction and is also much closer to classic literature. The 100 books reviewed here make this quite clear.

Fantasy books by authors from classic literature includes works of Johnathan Swift, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, Emily Bronte, Robert Louis Stevenson, Oscar Wilde, and Franz Kafka.

Fantasy books from familiar Fantasy authors include works of Tolkien, Mary Shelley, Lord Dunsany, William Morris, E.R. Burroughs, Fritz Lieber, Ursula K. LeGuin, and many others.

Each review tells about the author, the book, and its significance in Fantasy literature. This book is really an indispensible guide for Fantasy fans looking to find significant Fantasy literature from the earliest works to the contemporary.

The only major flaw in the book is the under-emphasis of Michael Morcook's works. Because Michael Moorcock is a co-author, the authors felt that his works should be de-emphasized as a matter of journalistic integrity. Too bad.

I think you will find this book much more helpful than Pringle's "Modern Fantasy" guide as Pringle's review only covers works since 1946--after so much of the world's innocence and romanticism had been lost.

Editorial Review:

The lyrical genius of Michael Moorcock defies categorization; his creations soar to grand and golden places hitherto unimagined and unimaginable. In this, his most heartfelt and astonishing work to date, he carries the reader across mystical thresholds viewed from afar in the brilliant Blood and Fabulous Harbors, and reveals the mighty destinies, exemplary loves, and the true and secret histories of his most beloved and intriguing characters. It is a tale of the incomparable Rose von Bek, who discovers the myriad possibilities that life has to offer in the special, infinitely wondrous places known as the Second Ether--where time has no bounds and existence is a river of endless reinvention. Here, also, is the love of her life--the volatile and enigmatic Sam Oakenburst--and the story of the ill-fated passion of the exotic Colinda Dovero and the swashbuckling gambler Jack Karaquazian. These four together--along with their exceptional companions, including Rose's mad uncle, Michael, late of Texas--will become allies in what some call the great War in Heaven, fighting shoulder-to-shoulder against the agents of evil and stagnation, in a battle whose outcome will determine the very nature of reality itself.

One of my favorite Elric Books 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Takes place back in time before Stormbringer killed a loved one. I would read it after the first or second Elric book personally. Elric's father's shade is introduced, and it also should be read before The Dreamthief's Daughter. I really need to reread the other books before making a judgement, but would probably rate this as my 3rd favorite Elric book. I like Moorcock's books because I can get thru them quickly, yet they are still magnificent works that are different than 90% of the fantasy out there. I like his writing style better than about every other fantasy/science fiction author except maybe George R.R. Martin. But I don't get that soap opera pull from Moorcock; I can leave his books for a while and know they will always be there when I need a new adventure to escape into. While Tolkien appeals to a wide range of readers, most Moorcock works wouldn't appeal to religious folk, or anyone who doesn't like reading about death. While Elric constantly tries to save humanity in his own way, his sustenance comes to him by sacrificing souls to his patron Duke of Hell - Arioch.

So-so 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

My reasons for buying this were fond memories of the Elric novels and the fact that Russell illustrated it. Russell's work is beautiful, A+++, and it complements the story well.

HOWEVER...

I also feel that there was too much story here. Elric reads well in novel form, but put illustrations to it, and you find out just how bland some of the stories can be (even the First Comics adaptations).

Also, the Topps Comics story "One Life, Furnished in Early Moorcock", by Gaiman and Russell, is included. All I can say is, these guys must have had one heck of a childhood. I'm not sure what the point of this story was, other than to talk about homosexuality.

Editorial Review:

There was a time when great movement fell upon the earth and above it, when the destiny of men and gods was hammered out upon the forge of fate, when monstrous wars were brewed and mighty deeds were designed. Greatest of these heroes was a doom-driven adventurer who bore a runeblade that he loathed. His name was Elric of Melniboné, king of ruins, and lord of a scattered race that once ruled the world. Legendary artist P. Craig Russell adapts Michael Moorcock`s climactic Elric novel -- the grand story of the final battle between Law and Chaos -- to the comics format. This is Russell`s finest work yet, and the greatest Elric epic of them all, combining the best elements of horror, sword, and sorcery into one amazingly powerful story.

Moorcock continues to amaze 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The three full-length novels contained within this volume are each so different, one from the other, that the reader cannot help but be amazed that the same author wrote all three!

In "The Warhound and the World's Pain," Moorcock's usual themes of "chaos" vs. "law" are put in more the familiar terms (at least for us earthlings) of the Devil vs. God. Like his more popular Elric character, Moorcock has his "hero" Ulrich von Bek allied with chaos--the devil. The reader is treated to watching a master of fantasy play with common themes (the hero descends into Hell, and comes out with a quest that he must fulfill in order to save all humanity) that he rearranges in order to ask some penetrating questions about the nature of God, the Devil, faith, and religion in our lives.

The second novel, "The City in the Autumn Stars," is written in a completely different style from the first. Set in Germany (mostly) in the late 1700's, the book makes many references to actual historical happenings, in particular the French and American revolutions and the Industrial Revolution. The motivating factors behind these and other events are examined in extensive dialogs between characters as well as through internal monologues of the protagonist, Manfred von Bek. Someone a little better versed in English literature than I am could place the exact style Moorcock takes up with this novel, but it reminds me of Jules Verne. The chapter headings are long ("Chapter Sixteen: In which house rules are broken. An infestation and a visitation. Vermin destroyed. The Red O'Dowd's fish. Some useful attributes of a magic sword.") And the author manages quite capably to maintain this tone throughout the entire novel. Until the end, that is, when the multiverses start to conjoin, devil worshippers take center stage, and the feeling that one is reading a conventional historical novel rapidly disappears. The ending was not quite satisfactory, but nevertheless a tour de force by Moorcock.

The third novel, "The Dragon in the Sword," is one of my favorites, and I have reviewed it separately on the Amazon site.

The volume is capped off with a very short story, "The Pleasure Garden of Felipe Saggitarius." Although the main character is nominally a von Bek, and Hitler the Holy Grail, and some other toss-away references to familiar Moorcock characters are mentioned, there is no clear reason why this story was ever written, or indeed, why it was included in this volume.

Editorial Review:

The first three novels,The Warhound and the World's Pain, The City in the Autumn Stars and The Pleasure Garden of Felipe Sagittarius, of Michael Moorcock's classic fantasy sequence.

One Of Moorcock's more sympathetic "Champions" 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

While Elric remains Moorcock's most enduring charecter, Corum is the most likable. The Corum stories are also probably the best written because they were written as a series, unlike the Elric stories which were written through a 15 to 20 year time span. (The first 4 volumes of Hawkmoon are also excellent.)

Corum, like Elric is a tragic Hero, but is much more likeable and really has a lot of elements of being a true Hero. While Elric is a taker (The Stealer of Souls), Corum leaves his own world for another to help humans in a dire struggle against an Ancient race of Gods. (Actually charecters and representations from ancient Celtic Mythology.)

All in all one of Moorcock's best series. A must for any Sci-Fi/Fantasy Genre fan.

Corum is Second only to Elric himself! 5 out of 5 stars.

My first experience with Moorcock was Elric. I loved the character and wanted to read more Moorcock, so I picked up Von Bek. Well, I did not care for Von Bek, so I picked up the Eternal Champion, which, excluding the Von Bek story, I liked. I had heard many good things about Corum and decided to give him a try. While I will not say that he is greater than Elric, he is almost as good. Corum's story is one of irony to the end. Humans take his eye and his hand, but he aids humans in their struggles and falls in love with one. She dies and the Prince with the Silver Hand collection starts up. I liked these novels and consumed them rather quickly. They are well-written and thought out and everything that happens, for the most part, is resolved. Moorcock's sense of continuity is wonderful. Corum, as are most Moorcock books, is violent and full of arrows through heads and swords through throats. If you are at all interested in dark fantasy, read Corum

Editorial Review:

First "published" in 1915, as World War I raged through Europe, The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases was for thirty years disseminated to doctors around the world in the form of loose-leaf carbon copies and photocopies. In 1945, London’s Chatto & Windus published the first formal edition of the Guide. Twenty editions later, the Guide was discontinued, but continued to be updated by Dr. Lambshead and his colleagues and privately printed by friends. From Freetown to Istanbul, Timbuktu to Ulan Bator, it has proven its worth under less than ideal conditions. When a doctor lost in the Congo rainforests with only a few antibiotics and feral pigmy elephants for company cannot diagnose his odd spinal condition, he reaches for his handy copy of the Guide. When a family practice doctor cannot understand why a patient of 30 years with no history of mental defect suddenly begins to mimic inanimate objects, she turns to the reliable Lambshead Pocket Guide.

Now that the Lambshead Pocket Guide will once again be publicly published, Dr. Lambshead, well over one hundred years of age, has decided to pass the editorship of the Guide on to the capable if rather young, in the good doctor’s opinion, hands of Jeff VanderMeer and Mark Roberts. Although Dr. Lambshead will continue to monitor the influx of documentation regarding new diseases, he will leave the day-to-day editorial duties to VanderMeer and Roberts, both able doctors in their own right.

Spellbinding! Quality Product 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I was initially cautious about purchasing this item without benefit of peer review but I talked myself into it when the second volume came out. For the record, I purchased the MP3 version which is only 1 CD. I wonder if the 5 CD audiobook version has more in the way of liner notes because the MP3 version just has what's printed on the slip but I guess I won't know unless someone else writes a review of that format.

I've been an Elric fan since the early 80's and he remains my favorite fantasy character. Hearing Moorcock himself pronounce some of the more obscure names in the novel changed the way I remember my 13-year-old-self trying to decipher them but the haunting way in which the text is verbalized both by Moorcock and Jeff West only adds to the excitement of the story. There is background music but it is fitting, subtle, and adds to the overall presentation.

While I can guess the Moorcock read opening chapter may have been spliced together with several takes, the Jeff West tracks blend together with near perfection. When I stopped the audio after my 30-minute train ride into Chicago I had to check my player to see what chapter I made it to. I suppose that's another reason why I purchased the MP3 version, as I knew I'd only rip the audio CD into MP3 anyway. Plus who needs 5 CDs cluttering your home when you can have only 1. Oh ya, and the MP3 version is less expensive. Am I the only one wondering why you just can't download these from Amazon?

I recommend this item. Perhaps Amazon will post some sample length tracks which would have sealed the deal with me a lot sooner.

Editorial Review:

It is the color of a bleached skull, his flesh; and the long hair that flows below his shoulders is milk-white. From the tapering, beautiful head stare two slanting eyes, crimson and moody... He is Elric, Emperor of Melnibone, cursed with a keen and cynical intelligence, schooled in the art of sorcery and the hero of Michael Moorcock's remarkable epic of conflict and adventure at the dawn of human history. An 1 disc MP3-CD edition. Read by Jeff West. Included is a dramatic introduction, over 10 minutes in length, read by Michael Moorcock.
