The Moust Beutiful Plas 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The story that I read was really snappy and cool. It's called The Most Beautiful Place in the World By Ann Cameron. There was a boy named Juan and his grandmother. There was also Juan's mom. It takes place in San Pablo, Guatamala. The problem is she leaves him for ever and his mom doesn't let him visit her. He really loves his mom after his dad left them. Some one would want to read this book because its really sad and who ever loves tragedy or not it's a really good book.I recommend this book to people of any age.

Editorial Review:

"Seven-year-old Juan lives in Guatemala, a place of stunning beauty and grim economic reality. Abandoned by his mother, Juan lives with his grandmother and shines shoes. He passionately wants to attend school, but fears Grandmother will say no. Finally gathering his courage, he is surprised when she not only agrees to send him to school but also chides him about the importance of standing up for himself. Juan tells this bittersweet story, which reads smoothly and powerfully on several levels, with warmth and dignity."--Booklist.

Julian and Huey 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My review is about a boy named Julian and his little brother, Huey. Julian tells a lot of different things to his brother. Julian is a person who like to trick his little brother. His little brother thinks thses things are real, so he keeps asking his big brother, Julian, questions about these things. I thought this book was really good. I think the author was thinking about what he and his brother used to do together when they were little.

The Stories Julian Tells 5 out of 5 stars.

The Stories Julian Tells is a book that has six stories. You should read all the stories! One of the stories is about a father that makes a pudding!

Catalog Cats 3 out of 5 stars.

I didn't like this book because it doesn't have good stories. I reccomend this book to someone who likes girl books. I did not like the stories in the book because they were confusing to me. I was confused on the pudding story because they said, "You ate some, so I have to eat some, I ate some," over and over again. That's all I have to write.

The Kidnapped Prince 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"The Kidnapped Prince" is about Olaudah Equiano, an African prince who was kidnapped into slavery in 1755. Equiano was caring, honest and brave, and that is why I admire him a lot. These qualities helped him become a free man.

What I learned from his story is to be more brave, more honest and more caring. These things could help me have a better life. I recommend this book to people because I want people to read it. It is a good story.

The Kidnapped Prince: The Life of Olaudah Equiano 5 out of 5 stars.

The following reviews are excerpted from book reports written by a 5th grade class in Oakland, CA.

Jamar:
This book is really good and interesting, but sometimes is difficult to understand. I admire Olaudah because he was extremely hardworking and brave. I would like to read this book again because it is very authentic.
Edwin:
Olaudah learned many things. He learned to speak English well and he learned to read and to write. He also learned to fire the gun on the ship and he learned navigation. Olaudah helped his master a lot. That's why he won his freedom at 21.
Da'Quan:
The main characters are Olaudah Equiano and the slave masters. The main idea is about an 11 year old boy who was kidnapped and taken into slavery in 1755 and who won won his freedom when he was 21 years old. I admire him because he he is spiritual and hardworking.
Rattana:
Olaudah is an example to others because he is smart and loyal. This is what led him to what everyone, of any race wants: FREEDOM.
Rudy:
I really liked this book because it actually felt like I could picture what was happening at times. The book seemed like an action/adventure kind of book.
DeSean:
I liked this book because it showed real events going on in the 1700's. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in adventure books and books about slavery.
Mayloni:
Olaudah is brave because he stood up for himself in some places. He is strong and hardworking. He is honest because he has never tried to run away from his masters.
Tyler:
Even though he was a slave, Olaudah worked hard for his masters. He worked harder than the free white men who got paid for their work.
Clayneisha:
This story started in 1755 when Olaudah and his sister were kidnapped from their home in Africa. But early in the morning he was separated from his sister and Olaudah cried and cried. Olaudah was scared. People stole his fruit and stuff and he wondered why they would do that. And he wondered about his sister. After awhile he learned not to be scared and he was always honest and hardworking for his masters.
Robert:
In conclusion, Olaudah Equiano is a good man. Throughout all his travels he still was strong. His sprituality did not fade but got stronger. Olaudah is my hero. I love him as a friend.
Carla:
Oluadah bought his freedom by buying and selling goods. He was also hardworking, honest and persistent. These are the reasons he was able to gain his freedom when he was 21 years old.
Mercedes:
Olaudah Euiano was smart and honest and his masters liked him so he bought his freedom. I liked this book a lot because I learned a lot about slaveery.

Perfect for family read-alouds 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As a children's librarian, I had known that Ann Cameron's books about Julian and Huey, beginning with THE STORIES JULIAN TELLS were modern classics, but I hadn't read them until just recently. I was charmed and delighted with these sweet, lovely stories about a group of African-American children and their adventures.

GLORIA'S WAY, which features Julian's friend Gloria is another jewel in this series. In the first story, Gloria spends a long time crafting a beautiful, intricate valentine for her mother. She hangs it on the outside of the door to surprise her when she comes home, but much to her horror, the wind steals her valentine. Gloria gives chase, but the valentine ends up in the cage of an insulting and slightly scary parrot, who destroys it. Angry and upset, she walks back down the block, but as she goes by Julian's father's auto shop he stops her, and helps her find a solution to her problem.

In other adventures, Gloria helps cure Huey's dog of un unhealthy squirrel obsession, learns more about her hard-working father, and finds out that it's not always a good idea to ask your best friend whether or not he likes you best.

Cameron's stories ring true--never cloyingly sweet, the children are real individuals, not cardboard cutouts. My favorite thing about GLORIA'S WAY, as well as the other books in the series, is that it portrays a wonderful view of community--two parent families who care about their children, and about their children's friends. I love the fact that Julian's dad has a shop in the neighborhood, and that he would stop his work to comfort Gloria when she was upset.

I highly recommend GLORIA'S WAY to everyone. This would be a perfect read-aloud for a school classroom for families, as well as a good book for 3rd-4th graders to read alone.

Editorial Review:

Gloria is best friends with Julian and his little brother Huey, and she has as much to say as they do. There's the parrot that ruins the Valentine for her mother; Huey's dog, who needs to be cured of his squirrel obsession; and what happens when classmate Latisha tricks Gloria, Julian, and Huey-but they don't know until it's too late! Fans of Ann Cameron's best-selling chapter books about Julian and Huey will love Gloria, too.

"This is where peace begins-in an ordinary neighborhood where children learn to address their problems with the help of wise adults who offer them good counsel while respecting the children enough to let them work out their own solutions . . . . Sparkles with humor." (The Horn Book)

From the author, March 4, 2,000 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

An excerpt from this book, about African-American characters, was used January 31, 2,000 in a state-wide Illinois third-grade reading standards test. 70,000 Illinois children got this test excerpt, in which the testers reillustrated the story without permission and changed the characters to Causcasians. I wrote the book with great care, and with the hope that many children will identify with my characters who are courageous and successful and well-liked. Over 200,000 copies of the book have been sold. I know from my fan mail that many children of all races do identify with the characters. It must have been painful for many of them to see their heroes turned white on a test--and for others who know the book, it must have been distracting at the least. One of the testers' three new illustrations shows the brothers in the story playing baseball. Eight books about the characters have been published to date (there will be a new one next year)--and in none of them do the characters play baseball. The testers developed their test questions based on a 3-page excerpt from the book; they had never even seen a copy of the entire book (thus the error in race), much less read it. It's quite possible that a child who had read the book would give different answers to the test questions based on his knowledge, and that the testers, in their ignorance, would mark it wrong. In many states, statewide tests are very serious these days--children are stigmatized for low scores, and teachers lose their jobs. But it appears that the tests are hastily and thoughtlessly constructed and penalize good readers. Parents and all of us concerned with education need to know what kind of tests children are being subjected to. --anncameron@guate.net

I never thought that boys are afraid of bicycles but it seems that we have one here. And that is Julian!! Bicycles scare him more than tigers and lions! Oh,my gosh! This book is about a boy named Julian. He detests bicycles more than anything. His friend,Gloria owns a bicycle and wants to teach him how to ride.He refuses and makes up a fib.But the fib gets him into more trouble than telling the truth.Like the proverb,"Honesty is the best policy".If you want to find out what happened, read this book.Fibbers will always be fibbers but I hope Julian wouldn't be one after he tells this fib.

Miss McCabe's Class Loves Julian! 5 out of 5 stars.

Our class read Julian's Glorious Summe by Ann Cameron. We feel that the book was fabulous! Julian tells many lies in this book to hide the secret that he's scared of bikes. Ms. Cameron wrote the sentences in a fun and interesting way. At the end, Julian got a surprise and he was successful. Julian learned an important lesson. Overall, we think you should read this book too.

Editorial Review:

Bicycles–shiny, whizzing, wobbly bicycles–scare Julian more than lions or tigers. But how can he tell that to his best friend, Gloria? She can already ride with no hands. So instead of telling the truth, Julian makes up a little fib. And he almost gets away with it–until his fib backfires and Julian finds himself in the biggest, most confounding fix ever.

It’s Dad’s birthday, and Julian is having a hard time coming up with a special present. He wants it to be something Dad has always dreamed about. But first Julian has to figure out what that is. When he does find out,
will he be brave enough to get it? Dad’s dream is pretty unusual–not to mention scary. Luckily, Julian has help from Huey and Gloria, and together they stalk the woods in search of Dad’s present.

My daughters enjoyed this book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's has been very difficult trying to find books for my twin 8yr old daughters.

I wanted a series of books with the star character being an African American girl just having fun and doing kid stuff. A book that will make them know that reading is fun. This book does just that and more.

If you're looking for a great chapter book for an African American girl, then author Ann Cameron's "Gloria Rising" and "Gloria's Way" is it.

Also, try Valerie Wilson Wesley's series of "Willimena Rules".

Editorial Review:

Gloria is thrilled when she goes to the store to buy an onion and meets Dr. Grace Street, an astronaut. It’s there that Dr. Street tells Gloria to have confidence in herself and that the big things aren’t always as big as they seem. But Gloria doesn’t really understand Dr. Street’s advice. Right now her problem seems gigantic. It’s the beginning of fourth grade and Gloria can’t do anything to please her teacher, Mrs. Yardley, who roars and hisses like the Dragon of Doom. When Gloria writes a report about meeting Dr. Street, Mrs. Yardley doesn’t believe her. Gloria knows she’s telling the truth. How can she prove it?

It isn't easy being Julian's younger brother. When Huey has bad dreams, Julian says his are scarier. When Huey wants to study animal tracks, Julian says he's too young. But Huey isn't a baby.
