Comedian, actor, and director Billy Crystal’s ode to his first grandchild will strike a chord with every expectant grandparent (and parents, too). Readers will feel the sweet anticipation building as Grandpa Crystal dreams about the baby’s upcoming birth. While the writing is at times awkward, the sentiment behind the text is genuine and universal, " I want to feel your heart beat as you lie upon my chest, bait your hook, fly your kite, help you study for a test." The narrator envisions peekaboo, horsey, and visits to the beach with a red-haired tot--his love virtually bubbles over. Pastel illustrations (reminiscent of the dreamy, soft-focus drawings in pregnancy books) by Elizabeth Sayles show the rugged, gray-haired gramps beaming as he partakes of the imagined pleasures to come. Crystal concludes with another awkward yet heartfelt verse:

Your mom is my daughter, and your dad is his mom’s son. You lived within your mommy, but now the time has come. Get ready, sweet little one-- Your life will be just great. I’m going to be your grandpa, and… I can hardly wait.

AS a first-time grandfather to a granddaughter, when I saw this book three months after my granddaughter was born, I knew I had to have it come her first birthday. Luckily, Amazon had it, while local booksellers didn't. I don't care how well it's written. I don't teach English. What I love is that it captures much of our first year together, it's from me (unlike Grandma usually buying stuff for her), the pictures are great, and she can snuggle up on my lap while I read it to her, changing the words to personalize it even more to fit just the two of us. Billy Crystal did a great job capturing in words and pictures what I can't. I hope this special gift for my beautiful granddaughter will help her know in the years to come just how special she is to her grandpa! I'm betting she'll focus on that and not if the rhyme is forced (per another reviewer). Grandpa DR

In "I Already Know I Love You," author Billy Crystal shares the excitement that comes with the anticipation of the arrival of a new baby from a grandfather's perspective. From wanting to "play horsey" to sharing "spaghetti, wontons, and ice-cream pie," there are so many fun moments ahead!

Max: (after I read the title) "I love you too mom!"
Cayden: "Max you are funny! She was reading the name of the book!"

Cayden: "The baby is in that lady's belly still. Is that the grandpa?"

Max: "Play baseball!"
Cayden: "And fish too! I fish with grandpa and dad!"

Max: "Play peekaboo! See you!"

Cayden: "Laugh like a goon?!? Goons are in the Bunny Foo Foo book."
Max: "Funny goon!"

Cayden: "Look, they are flying a kite!"

Cayden: "There is the baby!!"

"I Already Know I Love You" by Billy Crystal is a sweet book celebrating one of the most special times in life, the arrival of a new baby. The book is told from the grandfather's point of view so besides being a great book for children, it is also a great book to give to grandfathers-to-be! My children loved looking at all of the things that the grandpa wanted to do with his new grandchild and found that a lot of the activities they already do with their grandpas.
