Violets are blue i like this book and you should too! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The moral of the story is really good because it teaches kids to always be nice to peole no matter what. Even if people are are mean to you it is important to always be nice and polite and this book does a great job of teaching that. It helps kids see what can happen when people dont treat other people like they would want to be treated.
The illustration in this book were very cute. They were very creative and they kept kids interested.
This really is a great book and kids would really like to listen to this story. They would enjoy the illustations and they would remember the characters long after reading the book.

Our 4 yr old daughter loves this book. She has requested this book every night for the past two weeks. The illustrations keep her attention while the story teaches lessons at her level of understanding. We look forward to more books from this series.

Book Review
By London Stoll

I read "Jingle Bells, Homework Smells" by Diane de Groat.

This whole book was about a kid named Gilbert and how he does not like doing his homework. He would rather go outside and play or help his mom decorate cookies. He gets homework over the weekend and he gets so distracted by doing fun things that he forgets to do his homework. Monday morning when he gets up for school he remembers that he didn't do his homework and wants to stay home. His mom makes him go to school. Gilbert and his friend make a snowman outside the classroom window for their homework project and are disappointed when the teacher makes them do the project over. Gilbert learns an important lesson.

I liked the book because Gilbert is a lot like me. I would rather do fun things then do my homework.
Gilbert says, "I can do it later" and that is what I always say too.

I give these book 5 stars, because all the details and descriptions this is a quote from the book throwing snow balls at widows. I recommend this book to my family.

Editorial Review:

No time for homework!

When Mrs. Byrd gives the class homework for the weekend, Gilbert just can't seem to find the time to do it. That's because it's almost Christmas, and Gilbert has other important things to do, like decorating Christmas cookies, ice skating with his friends, and helping his family find the perfect Christmas tree. What will Gilbert do when Monday morning comes?

The joyous holiday feeling around Gilbert's house comes alive in this funny, festive story that's perfect for anyone who's ever put off a chore.

A Winner! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

We just received this book as a gift a few days ago and my 2-year old son has asked Mommy to read it no fewer than twenty times already! The sing-song rhyme pattern is lots of fun, somewhat similar to Boynton in Barnyard Dance, another of our favorites. We get loud and crazy when we read this one! The illustrations are lovely and provide lots of scope for discussion and I Spy games. This is a terrific book and I would be surprised if your child didn't enjoy it tremendously!

A Cute Story for your 10 month to 18 month old 5 out of 5 stars.

This book can be read very quickly for the impatient baby, or savored for the older toddler. The pictures are cute, and the main adult in the story is the father. My toddler liked the presence of the dog and cat. She enjoyed the book since she was 8 months old. It is not one of her favorites now at 2 1/2 but we still read it occasionally since it only takes about 2 minutes to get through. The rhythm and rhyme flow well.

This would make a great baby gift!

Liar Liar pants on fire 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a book that has beautiful big illustration. The characters are animals (which I think children relate to better) and the story revolves around the idea that Lying is a bad habit and you get in less trouble if you tell the truth rather than lie. The story inside the story is about a teacher teaching her children about Presidents Washington and Lincoln (Mainly President Washington). The main character Gilbert is the one who learns a valuable lesson. This book would be great to read to a elementary history class especially around presidents day. I would recommend this book for kids over the age of four. I don't feel that most children under age four would understand the way the story teaches the lesson as it makes reference to the story of the Cherry Tree.

Gilbert 5 out of 5 stars.

Let me tell you a feel-good story. It involves love - the love of a mother for her daughter, and a child's passionate, exhilarated, uncomplicated love for books. This is the true story of Deb Raymer, and her daughter Sabrina, and how I came to know them. This holiday season, I am grateful that Deb has shared parts of her story, and that through her mom, Sabrina has shared a wonderful cast of characters previously unknown to me.

A couple of months ago, Deb asked me to help her find a series of books. All Sabrina wants for Christmas is "Gilbert". Deb needed to order multiple copies of each book in the collection, she explained. Sabrina loves the "Gilbert" books so much, that she reads them to pieces. Literally. While I am always thrilled to see someone who loves books that much, that's not even the best part of the story. Sabrina is mentally and physically handicapped. She has a job at Partners in Progress that she enjoys. Whenever she rides to work on the bus, she has a "Gilbert" book - or two, or three - in her bag, and she "reads" them to the other passengers. Sabrina has memorized her favorite books. Her mother needs to keep buying new copies of them because Sabrina pages through them so much and so often that they fall apart.

Gilbert, the hedgehog, and his sister Lola, are creations from the paintbrush and pen of Diane de Groat. This author/illustrator started working in children's literature by doing the artwork for some well-known children's authors, such as Lois Lowry and Eve Bunting. De Groat started on her Gilbert series in 1996 with "Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink", which is still Sabrina's favorite.

I hadn't heard of de Groat, and Deb gave my literary ego a boost by reassuring me that I'm not alone. Often, when Deb and Sabrina have searched for Gilbert in libraries and bookstores, he is nowhere to be found. So, it's time to spread the word. Diane de Groat has created a fun, inexpensive series with sympathetic characters, situations that kids can relate to, and a little lesson that doesn't come across like a 2"x 4" to the forehead. The titles themselves produce a smile for kids and adults alike. Now there's a Gilbert for every season in a child's life. A reader can start school with Gilbert in "Brand New Pencils, Brand New Books" and end the school year with the companion volume, "No More Pencils, No More Books! No More Teacher's Dirty Looks!" In these final months of the year, we have been enjoying "We Gather Together, Now Please Get Lost" for Thanksgiving, and "Jingle Bells, Homework Smells" for Christmas.

The Gilbert books have been so successful that now his sister Lola has her own series, books for slightly younger children, that often include Gilbert, but from Lola's point-of-view. When Lola can't decide what to be for Halloween, she finally decides to be "a Gilbert", because she knows he's an original. I think Sabrina and Lola are on to something good.

I love Dr. Ruth. A rational approach to sexual development and an excellent investment.

This is a great book. 5 out of 5 stars.

When my daughter was about 10 I realized that my technique of answering questions she asked but not going into more detail than she asked about no longer worked. She suddenly knew just enough to be embarrassed to ask about anything! She really hated it if I brought The Subject (sex) up, so thinking that she just didn't want to associate The Subject with her mother (I can certainly understand that!) I got her a book that she could read privately. She refused to even look at it. So I read it to her as a bedtime story. We shut the door and read it over three or four nights. It's a pitch-perfect book. I'm so glad my daughter wouldn't listen to me -- hearing it from Dr. Ruth, with her open-minded, loving yet clinical, detached, scientific yet human perspective was truly informative, interesting, and empowering. That was three years ago and my daughter is very calm and realistic as she, and her whole 7th grade class, surf through puberty. I'm buying it again because I raved about it so much that I lent it out and haven't seen it for two years and now the little sister needs a turn.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Ruth's forthright and always engaging discussion of growing up begins with the physical and emotional changes that take place during adolescence, and then explores such topics as homosexuality, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, as well as conception and birth.

Writing Witty Enough For An Adult 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this story to be witty and full of humor. The story of Marla practically mimicked my life in a small town with no other Jews. The unknown holiday I celebrated and the massive overly merchandised holiday of my neighbors and friends was exactly what I felt. Marla's character was me, seventeen years ago.

Editorial Review:

Marla Feinstein, the only Jewish kid in her fourth-grade class, hates December. While everyone else is decorating trees, she'll be forgetting to light the candles and staring at a big plastic dreidel. The holidays couldn't get much worse. So Marla decides to find out what Hanukkah's really about-and soon she and her family have made the Festival of Lights the biggest party in town!

This story struck me by surprise. The cover of this book looks like a traditional Thanksgiving story, but the title proves differently. I enjoyed the in-depth message portrayed by this story. Its message is of one that promotes acceptance and respect for all students. The illustrations in this book are outstanding. The colors and facial expressions bring the pages of this story to life. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a book that provides a modern twist to a general Thanksgiving story.
