Wonderful Read 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I used to dislike books about talking animals. Kate DiCamillo has totally changed my opinion. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was such a touching story that I could absolutely not put it down. I read this one immediately after finishing Ann M. Martin's A Dog's Life and I think I must have gone through a whole box of Kleenex between the two books. The people that Edward meets as he is passed from one person to another are so well-defined. Even though he is with everyone a short time, the reader really connects with everyone and wondering when Edward will finally arrive "home."

I must admit that the ending was a little cliche. ***SPOILER ALERT****

The possibility of the little girl who lost Edward in the beginning stumbling across him with her own daughter is wonderful, but the probability just isn't there. Considering how far he traveled it is amazing they connected again and no stars were lost because as a children's story this was the ending that just had to be there.

Editorial Review:

This is a magical story about a china rabbit from an award-winning author.Abilene loves her blue china rabbit, but Edward Tulane is extremely vain and only loves himself. On a voyage to London, Edward falls overboard and from there embarks on an amazing journey. He travels with hobos, works as a scarecrow, comforts a dying child and finally learns what it is to truly love.

This is an excellent book to be read to prereaders and for early readers on up to adults. Ms Dicamillo has another book 'The Tales of Desperaux' that is fantastic and will be a full length animated feature motion picture being released on December 19th.

how a stray dog wins friends and influeces people 4 out of 5 stars.

Name your dog Albertsons because you found him there?
A lonely little girl finds a stray dog who can smile.
This preacher's daughter has been to India ( was named after it), but lost her mother very early.
Sadness and loneliness give way to new friends and
good times as Winn-Dixie wins friends her in the Florida summer.
The book is well written and a heart string plucker.
Most children and grandparents should enjoy the stories here.

Straight up without the fluff 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have to hand it to Kate DiCamillo for this one. After reading Because of Winn-Dixie I was expecting much of the same "fluff" that I found DiCamillo using to make Winn-Dixie the so called "perfect kids book." Nothing bad ever seems to happen, and if it does - fear not - it gets resolved and wrapped up with a neat little bow a few pages later . . . Welcome to the land of Make Believe (or California, whatever).

Much to my pleasant surprise, Tiger Rising is nothing like it's predecessor. Instead of "feel-good fluff," DiCamillo develops realistic emotions and experiences of two young distraught children who slowly (and intensely at times) find themselves reaching out to one another.

The characters have flaws, baggage (enough for a 777), and pure raw emotion that seems to reach out of the page and smack you in the face. DiCamillo isn't afraid to show the reader how this affects the characters, often quite painfully.

This isn't a fairytale, it's real life. There is a beautifully orchestrated climax and a conclusion of sorts - one, I found, that left me with a deepened sense of caring for the characters as many loose ends are still left untied and I was left to seriously contemplate how these experiences would impact their lives.

Editorial Review:

The National Book Award finalist from the best-selling author of BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE - now in paperback

Walking through the misty Florida woods one morning, twelve-year-old Rob Horton is stunned to encounter a tiger - a real-life, very large tiger - pacing back and forth in a cage. What’s more, on the same extraordinary day, he meets Sistine Bailey, a girl who shows her feelings as readily as Rob hides his. As they learn to trust each other, and ultimately, to be friends, Rob and Sistine prove that some things - like memories, and heartaches, and tigers - can’t be locked up forever.

She longed for adventure. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

When you're young, it still feels like anything can and might happen to you. Adventures peek out from under the horizon, big and fantastical ones that could make you feel more in control of your own destiny, more seasoned as a person, or like you're having more fun than you would be just sitting at home.

Louise is like that. She's a chicken who wants to experience "true adventure" and leaves home to discover what it really is. Her adventures are familiar in theory (pirates, the circus, faraway lands) and yet full of the unexpected when actually realized. There are dark moments and funny ones, often on the same page and in both the text and illustrations. The reader is privy to an understated version of the emotions and thoughts that run through Louise's mind as she seeks out "true adventure". Without a lot of exclamation points and hardly any exposition, Louise's story is quietly satisfying.

Editorial Review:

She longed for adventure.

So she left her home and ventured out into the wide world.

The pleasures and perils she met proved plentiful: marauding pirates on the majestic seas, a ferocious lion under the bright lights of the big top, a mysterious stranger in an exotic and bustling bazaar.

Yet in the face of such daunting danger, our heroine . . .

She was brave.

She was fearless.

She was feathered.

She was a chicken.

A not-so-chicken chicken.

Her name?

An Inspired Duo . . . 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Kate DiCamillo and Chris VanDusen are truly an inspired duo. This book, like the others in the series, is chock full of odd and entertaining characters brought to life by VanDusen's brilliant artwork. It's always great to see what new character DiCamillo adds to each new book. This is a great read-aloud for kids of any age, but with a caveat: be prepared to have a strong craving for hot buttered toast with a great deal of butter on it after reading any Mercy the Pig book.

Editorial Review:

Can Mercy Watson outwit . . . Animal Control? The porcine wonder’s on the lam in her latest tongue-in-snout adventure!

Eugenia and Baby Lincoln may live next door to a pig, but that doesn’t stop them from living a gracious life. And the amiable Mercy Watson is equally determined to follow the delightful scent (and delicious taste) of the pansies her thoughtful neighbors are planting to beautify their yard. "Where have all the flowers gone?" shouts Eugenia, who is finally ready to take extreme measures —- and dial Animal Control! Has Mercy’s swine song come at last? Or will her well-pampered instincts keep her in buttered toast?

Amazing illustrations, awful story 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have so many issues with the text of this book. As a picture book it is lovely to look at and has a very satisfying aesthetic. As a story, it is so unfinished that it leaves me cold. I had the chance to ask the author, at a talk, what happens to the man and the monkey after the pageant. She said "nothing, who knows, why does it matter". I understand that in some of her other works, like Because of Winn-Dixie, the readers are older children at an age to deal with ambiguity and either make up their own end, or move on. Explain to a 5 year old why the man and the monkey live on the street, explain why they have no home, tell your child why the indigent have no where to go after the pageant and while warm for now, the man and monkey will go back out to the cold after and sleep in the snow.

I am not saying picture books must be easy, trite and tied in big bows at the end...leaving things unresolved or open to interpretation is fine but it seems like a lot to bring up in so short a space, with no denouement or even brilliant enough verbage to justify the imperfections

Again, the illustrations are ethereal and dreamy. Very beautiful.

Just don't read it aloud, or read it at all.

Editorial Review:

Just before Christmas, an organ grinder and his monkey appear on the street corner outside Frances' apartment. Frances can see them from her window and, sometimes, when it's quiet, she can hear their music. She can't stop thinking about them, especially after she sees the man and his monkey sleeping outside on the cold street at midnight. Even when it is her turn to speak in the Christmas play, all she can think about is the organ grinder's sad eyes. Everyone is silent until Frances finds the perfect words to share, just in time.

Mercy Watson (and Kate D.) to the rescue 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What a great addition to the early chapter book category. Humor, great characters, real linear storytelling and eye-popping illustrations make these books a real breath of fresh air for early readers. My young (struggling) reader was bringing home thin, uninspiring early readers until her teacher added Mercy Watson to the read-alouds. I knew we had a hit (and a breakthrough) when my child brought them on vacation, raced through them reading silently to herself. Just one problem, we've finished the series and will have to wait six months for the next one. If you're child is having difficulty getting "into" books, these make make a big difference.

Editorial Review:

Mercy Watson brought home a real treat — a 2007 Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor! And now readers can collect a trio of her adventures in one beguiling boxed set.

Pig hero. Porcine wonder. Fan of toast with a great deal of butter on it. Mercy Watson’s disarming personality and hilarious hijinks are captivating early chapter-book readers everywhere. Now it’s easy to jumpstart a Mercy Watson collection with this enticing boxed set combining the first three adventures of the series: MERCY WATSON TO THE RESCUE (an American Library Association Notable Children’s Book), MERCY WATSON GOES FOR A RIDE (winner of a 2007 Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor), and MERCY WATSON FIGHTS CRIME.

Editorial Review:

Mercy’s in the pink for her fourth adventure!

When the Watsons decide to zip their porcine wonder into a formfitting princess dress for Halloween -- complete with tiara -- they are certain that Mercy will be beautiful beyond compare. Mercy is equally certain she likes the sound of trick-or-TREATING and can picture those piles of buttered toast already. As for the Lincoln Sisters next door, how could they know that their cat would get into the act and lead them all on a Halloween "parade" of hysterical proportions? Kate DiCamillo’s beguiling pig is back in a tale full of treats, tricky turns, hijinks, and high humor.

Can visions of treats entice a porcine wonder to wear her princess costume? Hold on for some Halloween havoc, Mercy Watson-style!

Decent but not Great 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Mercy Watson is a "porcine wonder." She's a pig who lives with Mr. and Mrs. Watson. She has her own bed in her own room, loves buttered toast, and enjoys her Saturday routine with Mr. Watson.

Every Saturday, Mercy and Mr. Watson go for a ride in his convertible. Mercy always wants to drive, but Mr. Watson always tells her pigs can't drive. The Watsons' neighbor, Eugenia Lincoln always grumbles about the folly, and her sister, Baby Lincoln, always appreciates the folly.

When Baby sneaks into the car one week, wheeled silliness ensues, a police officer gets involved, and Mercy is in the middle of it all.

The illustrations are as fun as in MERCY WATSON TO THE RESCUE, and Mercy is still fixated on heavily buttered toast. While the Mercy Watson series is a cute concept, MERCY WATSON GOES FOR A RIDE falls a little short of expectations from the author of BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE. Children that are more inquisitive will be left wondering why the police officer didn't write the speeding ticket he was going to give to Mr. Watson, why Mr. Watson was taken home in a police car instead of driving home, and so on. Parents who plan to read this book to their children may find the logic issues annoying enough to make them not want to read it more than necessary.

While this isn't a brilliant read, it certainly isn't bad for young readers. This book will appeal to some kids but not others, rather than appealing to a broad audience. The illustrations are super, and I think that will be a redeeming feature for many potential readers.

Editorial Review:

The New York Times best-selling porcine wonder finds herself behind the wheel in this hilarious new adventure!

Mr. and Mrs. Watson’s porcine wonder, Mercy, loves nothing more than a ride in the car. It takes a fair amount of nudging and bribing and a "You are such a good sport, darling" to get the portly pig out of the driver’s seat, but once the convertible is on the road, Mercy loves the feel of the wind tickling her ears and the sun on her snout.

One day the Watsons’ motoring ritual takes an unexpected turn, however, when their elderly neighbor Baby Lincoln pops up in the backseat in hopes of some "folly and adventure" – and in the chaos that ensues, an exuberant Mercy ends up behind the wheel! Soon there’s a policeman on her tail, a struggle for the brake, and a blissfully airborne Mercy. Of course, it’s nothing that an extra helping of buttered toast can’t fix!
