The Hire Wire Act Over the World Trade Center 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful story of Philippe Petit and his walk between the Twin Tower of the World Trade Center. It is done in a very moving way and the story is truly touching. I can't believe he did it! Since the towers are no more, the story is even more eloquent.

Great tool for the classroom! 5 out of 5 stars.

Love this book! My partner teacher and I use this book each year to teach a lesson to our 5th graders on September 11th. What better way than to give them some background of the towers and to draw their attention in...Then, to let them ponder on the thought as it ends that now the towers are gone. Wonderful book!

Editorial Review:

In 1974, French aerialist Philippe Petit threw a tightrope between the two towers of the World Trade Center and spent an hour walking, dancing, and performing high-wire tricks a quarter mile in the sky. This picture book captures the poetry and magic of the event with a poetry of its own: lyrical words and lovely paintings that present the detail, daring, and--in two dramatic foldout spreads-- the vertiginous drama of Petit's feat.

Perfect, uplifting story for age 6+ explaining death and rebirth 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Gorgeous illustrations and a truly beautiful story make this book a rare treasure in Children's literature. A valuable addition to the book collection of Buddhist parented children. Explains the process of death and rebirth/reincarnation in a gentle and interesting way. Not weird at all and so suitable for children of non-Buddhist background as well as it provides an valuable insight as to how Buddhism/other belief systems explain death and the afterlife.

Editorial Review:

‘This story of the death and reincarnation of a Tibetan woodcutter is a beautifully gentle look at one human being dealing with life’s choices and possibilities.’ —SLJ. ‘The impact of its peaceful message will reverberate long after the last page is read.’ —H.

A Beautiful Book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The text and illustrations combine to make a wonderful, beautiful book. Recommended as a great gift for an artist.

Charming and captivating story 5 out of 5 stars.

This book caught my eye as I was leaving the bookstore because it does have a lovely cover illustration. However after glancing at a few pages and seeing the boy painting an empty cage for his bird, I knew this was a keeper and got it without even reading through it. When I got home and actually read the book I was even more impressed. The illustrations are warm and expressive and the story draws you in. I read it that night to my four year old and it instantly became her new favorite book. She liked it so much we must have read it two dozen times or more in the first week alone. Now I will find her sitting on the bed or floor and reading the book to herself, getting excited about the bird singing and talking about the bird flying home out of the painting. I really am sorry that another reviewer expected a how-to book and didn't page through it first. I am surprised that they didn't like the story but to each his own. We have now given this book as a gift for birthday parties of two friends as it is a lovely addition to a youngster's library. It will continue to be a favorite book and gift idea standby for years to come.

Editorial Review:

A GIFT FOR EVERYONE A child wakes up, puts up an easel, picks up a brush and paints--paints a perch, a tree, the warmth of the sun and the sound of the summer breeze, and eventually a bird comes and sings.  This is both the most personal and the most universal of books from Caldecott Medal winner Mordicai Gerstin: a fable about art, wonder, and creativity that has a meaning and a message for every reader.  Universal appeal and illustration rich in warmth, color and feeling make this jewel of a picture book a lovely choice for the gift-giving season.

Very Amusing 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I chose to read this book for a Children's Lit. class in college. It was one of the most amusing alphabet books I found. The pictures are absolutely great. The book contains tons of volcabulary words (ie. ferocious, jabbering, and quizzical) for those who already know their ABCs. It could be used in the classroom by having kids make up their own monsters using letters assigned to them. Then they could all be compiled to make an alphabet book written and illustrated by the whole class.

Overall, I loved this book. Kids will have a lot of fun with this one!

Our 20 month old boy loves this 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'd have to agree with the previous reviewer that this is a great book.

I really enjoy reading it to our son, who, with this book's help, has articulated his first letter (O). It is enjoyable for adults and captivating for children.

The pictures are great, and I am very impressed that the letters drawn in the title are drawn differently to those throughout the book. Just detail is quite unusual in this digital age. The Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck books these days use the same pictures over and over again, just cut & pasted into different contexts.

Well done Mordicai Gerstein! 5 stars! Thoroughly recommended!

Editorial Review:

The alphabet never looked this way before. These letters have drippy noses, scratchy hair, and green teeth. They belch and drool, and stick out their tongues. Zany art gives each letter a spectacular new personality, and the humorous, alliterative text is sure to stretch young readers’ vocabularies.

EIGHT WONDERFUL HANUKKAH STORIES - ONE FOR EACH NIGHT 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 24 people found this review helpful.

While the real city of Chelm is in Poland, the Chelm of Jewish legend could be almost anywhere - it is the traditional town of fools. But, as is the case with many fools, they're often wiser than we realize. After all, when dreidel is played in Chelm everyone wins!

Caldecott Honoree Kimmel has created eight hilarious Hanukkah stories filled with memorable characters such as Monke Fool, and Feivel Bonehead. Add the smile-provoking, colorful illustrations of Mordicai Gerstein and you have a book that is both spirited and poignant - very much like Hanukkah itself.

Wisdom for sale 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As Eric Kimmel explains in the afterword of another book, he hails from a long line of storytellers. That may be why he is particularly adept at telling these eight delights from Chelm, one for each night of the Festival of Lights.

Now Chelm, as you may know, is the mythical town of fools somewhere in Eastern Europe. And every book of Chelm stories offers a different explanation of how they got there, usually involving God, angels--and a giant slip-up. Kimmel's variation ascends to the level of Isaac Bashevis Singer (who also wrote magnificent tales for children), maybe because he retells a Yiddish version of the story.

Kimmel has a neat way of taking stories from one tradition and mixing them with others, a feat he pulls off with aplomb in three of these tales. I especially like Berel Dunce and Motke Fool in The Magic Spoon, a Chelm rendition of Stone Soup.

He can also magically pull original stories out of thin air, as he does here with three Chelmnick firsts. One, The Soul of the Menorah, introduces us to the menorah at the Grand Synogogue of Chelm, with a blessing from the Seer of Lublin himself.

It came to Chelm, many years ago, on the back of a hay wagon, in the shape of a hay fork. Anyone who dared to question that God threw it down from heaven was greeted with the rejoinder, "Dolt! Mooncalf! Since when does a hay fork shine like silver?"

Sparks of holiness can be found in the most common, ordinary things, the Rabbi of Lublin told the people of Chelm. "A blind beggar singing in the marketplace might be an angel. An old boot may hold the key to a cosmic riddle. We must constantly search for the hidden sparks so that we can uncover their true holiness."

Maybe these Chelmnicks are no fools. After all, they were smart enough to let Kimmel bind their wisdom between the covers of this book, and offer it for sale. Trust me, this book is rich. (But then, I never met a Chelmnick I didn't like.) Alyssa A. Lappen

Editorial Review:

Drawing on traditional Jewish folklore, these Hanukkah stories relate the antics of the people of Chelm, thought--perhaps incorrectly--to be a town of fools.

This book is a tongue-twisting, ham-it-up with funny voices and sound effects, must for anyone who reads to children. The words themselves roll from the tongue in sheer joy; and although there may be deeper messages in the book, it's just plain fun to read. I've seldom found a book I enjoyed reading out loud more than this one, and I can't wait to read it to my granddaughter!

Is Fletcher responsible for Aniken's disappearance? 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I started reading chapter books for my cousin's children, and we decided to pick out "A Hare-Raising Tale" by Elizabeth Levy as one of our books.

The story is about a sleepy-eyed basset named Fletcher, whose fur spots are uniquely shaped like the continents of the world. He narrates the story to us, and starts off by saying that when he was a pup, he was put in the pet store, but because no one bought him, he was thrown out the back door and had to live in the streets. He makes friends with a flea named Jasper, but soon afterwards they are caught and put in the dog pound. While living in the pound, a girl named Jill comes and adopts him, and Fletcher goes to live with her. Jill and her friend Gwen decide to use Fletcher for show and tell, but things start going bad for Fletcher, when he is accused of doing something to Aniken (a mean rabbit), who is found missing after show and tell. Fletcher must prove that he is innocent by finding out what happened to Aniken.

My niece and I found this book exciting from start to finish. In the beginning of the book, Fletcher is very concerned about how he looks, and feels that he will not do well like other bassets because of his short tail and his unusual spots. But later, he finds that he has other special qualities, which he uses to solve the mystery. This provides a very nice moral for children who are concerned about what others think of them, and tells them that they should not lose hope even when things look bad.

Author Elizabeth Levy has used simple grammar and Mordicai Gerstein has drawn nice illustrations which children will find amusing and interesting. All in all, this is a fun chapter book to read which children and adults will find amusing to read.

Editorial Review:

Ready-for-Chapters

Who's Got The Bunny?

Fletcher's no ordinary basset hound. In the first place, his markings form a map of the world. In the second place, his best friend is...a flea.

Fletcher and his flea pal, Jasper, have survived a lot together -- life on the streets, incarceration at the pound, even a flea bath. But now Fletcher has a new home with Jill, and things are looking up. Until Jill and her best friend, Gwen, take Fletcher to school for show-and-tell, and the class's pet rabbit disappears. Everyone knows hounds and hares don't mix, and Fletcher is accused of having done the bunny in. Can he, with a little help from Jasper and Jill and Gwen, sniff out the real rabbit-napper before it's back to the pound for Fletcher?

Another Awesome Book by Ms. Levy! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As a 4th grade teacher, I use a lot of Elizabeth Levy's books in my classroom. My students absolutely LOVE the "Something Queer..." stories. They get very wrapped up in the mysteries and they enjoy the Gwen and Jill characters. There is ONE character that they love above all others, and that is- Fletcher the Bassett Hound.
We were all very excited to learn that Elizabeth and Mordicai would be working on books told from Fletcher's point of view. This book is delightful and funny--a great read aloud. I would also reccommend, "A Hare Raising Tale" and ALL of the Something Queer books. Not just for kids, but for dog lovers and mystery lovers alike!!!

WARNING: Reading May Be Hazardous To Your Health

The principal of Kill and Gwen's school promised to spend the morning on the roof if the kids read one thousand books during their reading marathon -- and they did! Now he's on the roof, and he's going to read an original science fiction story Gwen wrote.

But he could fall off the roof is he doesn't stop sneezing. Is it a coincidence that Gwen's story is about aliens who live on roofs and make humans sneeze? Fletcher knows that Gwen would never pull a dangerous practical joke just to make her story come try. But can he prove it before Gwen's in big trouble?

When elders take charge... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The Eastern mind reveres its elders. An important point.

"Three Samurai Cats: A Story from Japan" retold by Eric A. Kimmel and illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein emphasizes this point.

A rat walks into a dog's castle and basically assumes control. The dog daimyo goes to a distant shrine where samurai cats are known far and wide for their skills. He asks the docho to send his best warrior to defeat the rat. A samurai of flash and beauty is soundly defeated. A second tougher samurai cat is sent. He is heavily armored, but he too must show off his skills and is defeated.

At last, a master samurai arrives, but insists on fighting the rat in his own way. He sleeps, eats, sleeps, eats. The rat grows bolder. How the samurai cat defeats the rat is so easy. He uses the rat's own vices against him.

Children never fail to understand the lessons, love the art, and clamor for more stories about the Samurai Cats!

Editorial Review:

In this energetic story set in medieval Japan, a nasty rat has invaded the castle of a canine lord, and it will take a trio of fighting samurai cats before he's defeated. Humourous, finely detailed pen-an-ink illustrations bring this timeless tale to life.

I remember this book from the fourth grade, and think the series should be reprinted. This is an engaging, well-illustrated detective story with a duo of clue-chasing heroines and their floppy dog. They start a business then must find out who is sabotaging it.

It must be a good book when it pops to mind 20 years after the intial reading!
