Great for Nonconventional families! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We read this book all the time (in the top 3) to our 15-month-old daughter, even though we do have a conventional family. But I wanted to write this review so other people will know that it is a perfect child's book for a non-conventional family.
There is no gender reference to Small. There is no gender reference to Large. There is not even a reference of Large being a parent. There is no reference to any other family member. This would be fabulous for single parents or for guardians who are not "mom" or "dad".

Love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter received this book from her Nana when she was about 14 months old. It's one that, happily, I was able to recite by heart soon after. We read the book almost every night for about a year. And then we read it at least once/week for the next 2 years. When her brother was born, we started reading it to him. It is one of his very most favorites also. He knows if I accidentally skip a page or if I say something the wrong way. The other preschool book of Ms Gliori's that we love (and have loved) is Polar Bolero. My son LOVES that he can see a Little Small in Polar Bolero. Ms Gliori's illustrations are just wonderful.

My daughter was extra thrilled when we discovered that Ms Gliori has also written chapter books! We're anxiously awaiting to start the last book in the series - Pure Dead Frozen.

We are BIG GIANT FANS of Ms Gliori!

Editorial Review:

I’m grim and grumpy,” says Small to Large, “and I don’t think you love me at all.”But nothing could be further from the truth--and Large knows just how to reassure Small in this warm and tender story about a child’s biggest worry and a parent’s endless capacity for love.

Adorable book for siblings 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My kids love this book, especially when I replace the bunnies names with my kids' names. It's an adorable story about how an older sibling makes an effort to comfort his little sister and she returns the love. Very sweet with "cuddly" illustrations. Perfect for bedtime!

My favorite children's book 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book breathtakingly beautiful. I love the way it is written as well as the illustrations. It is written and illustrated by women which is a plus. It is a pleasure to give this book as a gift to little ones.

How 'bout happier? 3 out of 5 stars.

I, as a non-artist, can think of much more inspiring reasons for a small child to be happy at bedtime. Disappointing and shallow.

bed time best 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is one of our favorite bed time stories! It was originally a gift to our eldest and has become one of our favorite books to share with new parents. This story shows caring, compassion and love so beautifully.

Fun read, with a twist 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My 2 year old daughter likes this book, but like some other reviewers, I initially though the names were a bit repetitive and the writing stilted. Still, it was a favorite so I toughed it out. Then one evening I was in a strange mood on the second or third reading and started using a funny deep voice for Willoughby. The voice ended up a cross between Rod Serling from the Twilight Zone, Laurence Fishburn from the Matrix, and a sprinkling of William Shatner from Star Trek. The book is even more popular now and I need to try hard to keep from laughing every time I read it.

Dead? Check. Magic? Check. Pure? Um... 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Beware the books that proudly display blurbs using the word "meets". On the paperback copy of Deb Gliori's, "Pure Dead Magic", kids will learn that the book they hold in their hot little hands is both "Harry Potter meets Lemony Snicket" thanks to "Booklist", as well as "Mary Poppins meets the Addams Family" thanks to "Kirkus". I try to avoid the word "meets" when I write a review, but quite frankly I think "Kirkus" had a far better grasp on the book. An odd combination of fantasy-laden technology and sci-fi Dadaism, "Pure Dead Magic" is sure to prove popular with a whole assortment of kids. Whether it deserves its praise or not is entirely dependent on what kind of books your average child reader enjoys.

The Strega-Borgia family has been having a rough time of it. Not too long ago the patriarch of the family disappeared without leaving so much as a forwarding address. Now Mrs. Strega-Borgia is taking witchcraft lessons and hardly has any time at all to watch her three growing children. Fortunately, the answer to her prayers comes in the form of one Mrs. Flora McLachlan. Smart as a whip and not about to take any guff, McLachlan whips the house into shape and knows just how to deal with computer-obsessed Titus, rat-loving Pandora, and little baby Damp. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean the family still doesn't have problems. Apparently the kids' missing father has been taken hostage by his half-brother, a grand Mafioso. Also, the ancient ancestor currently cryogenically frozen in the basement freezer is thawing out, baby Damp has been accidentally shrunken and sent over the Internet via e-mail, and Pandora may have to swim with the family crocodile soon. Just add in the killer in the bunny suit and the fact that Mrs. McLachlan isn't all that she appears to be and you've got yourself a wacky tale with farce, large animals, and good timing.

The book doesn't have any qualms about channeling "The Addams Family". Heck, the butler in the story is named Latch (a switch of a vowel and a consonant) and the first thing out of his mouth when he answers the door is (I kid you not), "You rang?". But beyond that the only similarity comes in the form of creepy/extraordinary things. "The Addams Family" never employed a yeti and the Strega-Borgias would frown on dumping hot oil on visitors. Dragon poo on the other hand...

Any comparison with Lemony Snicket (which was done by "Booklist", "Kirkus" AND "School Library Journal") has to contend with the fact that whatever the flaws of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" may be, at least that series didn't engage in out-and-out potty humor. No such luck here. If the thought of a dragon killing a man through diarrhea doesn't disgust you particularly then THIS is the book for you! I gotta say, I've a pretty high "ick" tolerance, but there were times when this puppy definitely turned my tummy. Gliori also gets a bit sloppy on her finer details. We know right from the start that nanny McLachlan is a witch who tells herself at the start, "You want to forget the past?....Here is your chance to put it behind you". If we are to assume that the nanny ever has any qualms about using magic, however, that is quickly done away with the moment she needs something done. Gliori never says why McLachlan doesn't want to perform magic anymore. Perhaps that's a detail she's put on hold for a future book. Still, it's rather lazy giving the audience a big piece of information like that right at the start without caring to elaborate on it later.

You know, logic dictates that I should've really disliked this book. It had all kinds of things in it that I just don't care for. It's as if Gliori wanted to cram in as much craziness and characters as possible in as short a novel as necessary. But when at I look at its goofy little cover, I just can't do it. Yes, it's gross and not particularly inventive or new. But it has a kind of joyfulness to it that's hard to get past. Gliori is having such a good time writing this book and the kids who pick it up will have such a good time reading it that I'd have to be some kind of a cold-hearted ghoul of a wretch not to let some of that joy rub off onto me. The fact of the matter is that "Pure Dead Magic" accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. It tells an amusing story with some new ideas and amusing characters. Not the best-written or smartest fantasy out there, but perfectly readable and acceptable for your young `uns.

Editorial Review:

Things are not right at the Strega-Borgia castle. Signor Luciano Strega-Borgia has been kidnapped. Signora Baci Strega-Borgia is struggling with her spells at the Advanced Witchcraft Institute.Titus and Pandora don’t like their suspiciously cheerful and fearless new nanny. Baby Damp has been accidentally shrunk, e-mailed, and lost on the World Wide Web. And to top it off, there’s a gangster in a bunny suit lurking about. . . .

This seriously over-the-top, gothic romp is sure to have readers clamoring for the next Strega-Borgia adventure.

A Home, An Owner, and a Name..... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

That poor pesky rat. There he is living in trashcan number 3, Grubby Alley. He's all alone in the world wishing he was a real pet, with an owner, and creature comforts, and a name. His friend Pierre, the chinchilla, has a glamorous life eating chocolates, and Nibbles, the lop-eared rabbit, has an exciting life working in a circus. Even Andrew, the scottie dog, has a nice, quiet life with Miss St. Claire. She makes him wear a coat and hat when they go out, and that's embarrassing, but as that pesky rat tells us: "I would do almost anything to be somebody's pet." So he decides to take matters into his own little paws, and write an advertisement for the pet store window. He waits and waits and waits, and then one day old Mr Fortesque, with the very bad eyesight, stops by and reads..... Award winning author and illustrator, Lauren Child, has written a charming and humorous story that will have kids rooting and cheering for this unlikely and endearing want-to-be pet. Her engaging and witty text wraps itself creatively around her cleverly exuberant collage artwork, and children will enjoy all the colors, textures, and eye-catching details as they explore each playful illustration. With a satisfying, feel good ending, That Pesky Rat is perfect for youngsters 4-8, and a wonderful additional to all home libraries.

Editorial Review:

"How can someone so small make so much noise?" wonders Mr Bear. Mr and Mrs Bear and their woodland friends try everything, but nothing, it seems, will quieten the baby -- until her big sister has an idea ...Every parent will smile at Mr Bear's familiar predicament, read with warmth and delight by Paul McGann. The CD is accompanied by a wonderful newly packaged picture book, illustrated with warm, glowing artwork and a tender story and featuring Mr Bear - one of Orchard's most successful characters. >

sweet new baby book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The main character in the story a cute tiger cub. He has just gotten a new baby in his house. He wants to know where it came from so he can take it back. He's upset by all the attention it gets. He also says all it does is cry, pee and poop, and spit up! He's had it with this baby. That is until one day when the baby is crying and he goes over to it to try and calm it down. The baby smiles at him and he starts to like the baby.

The pictures were fun to look at. The story moved at a fast pace as well.

We would recommend this book to families who are getting ready to have babies. This would make a great story to read and discuss with young children about the way they feel about having a new baby in the home.

Editorial Review:

Where did that baby come from?

From the creator of the beloved No Matter What, this exuberant take on the chaos surrounding the arrival of a new baby is sure to be a welcome addition to the lives of bewildered older siblings everywhere.

What a treat!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My children (9 & 12) listened to this on tape and LOVED it. It's funny and intelligent, acccesible to children but full of jokes for adults as well. There's a little magic, a devoted family (and both parents are alive!) whose ancient castle (with Granny frozen in the freezer) is under attack by a villainous builder, Hugh Pylum Height, and a wild combination of the new (laptops) and the old (Nanny) to ensure that all will end happily. How can you resist a book with a baby named Damp, a son who conjures up tiny clones who won't behave, and a pet Yeti who takes direct action against the villains?

Editorial Review:

Just when the Strega-Borgias think it’s safe to relax in their ancestral castle . . . it isn’t.
First their roof collapses, forcing them into the Auchenlochtermuchty Arms–the only local hotel that will accomodate three mythical beasts and one crocodile. Then Titus accidentally creates 500 tiny naked pink clones. And 500 tiny naked pink clones are not easy to manage. But not surprisingly, this isn’t the biggest Strega-Borgia dilemma–there’s also a few evil contractors plotting to destroy their home forever. Perhaps the miniature kilted warriors arising from the spilled magic potion can help. . . .

Beautifuly written with a wise message. The new Lorax! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Reading this reminded me of the Seuss classic The Lorax. It's an important and updated addition to any picture book collection. It's also a wonderful choice for anyone who wants to share the importance of caring for the environment with kids. The illustrations are beautiful, playful yet serious, and I love the rhyming text. Great for children of all ages.

Editorial Review:

The world is populated by some beastly dragons who care nothing for how much they mess up the oceans, chop down the trees, gobble up all the food and use everything up without stopping to think. Those dragons need to wake up to what they are doing to their world before it is too late. This is a delightful and energy-filled picture book that addresses concerns about the environment in the most child-centric and delightful way possible.

A WONDERFUL story for Children who lose a loved one 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

We checked this book out at the library. My daughters had lost a close friend and out of all the books we checked out, this one was the very best. The reason why is because this book focuses on the people left behind. It is not about where the person who died went, or questions regarding death. It is a book about the grief process of the people who are left behind that love that person. Because the characters in the book are animals...it feels less "real" and allows a child to explore their own feelings with you and relate to this story in a non-threatening way. Most books that we read seemed to either upset them or make them angry and withdraw even more but this was one of the few books that helped them to talk about how they were feeling. I highly recommend this book if you need to use a story to show that grief is normal and that eventually they will be "o.k.". We bought a copy for our family to keep because death is a part of life and I know that we will go through this again.

Editorial Review:

When Fox dies, Mole, Hare, and Otter are devastated. They feel they will never get over their great sadness. How can life go on without him? Then one day Squirrel comes to visit. She reminds Fox's family of all the funny things he used to do. And as the friends share dinner and tell stories, they realize at last that in their hearts and memories, Fox is still with them, and he will be--always and forever.

With thoughtful, delicate illustrations by acclaimed artist Debi Gliori, this gentle story is just right for anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one.

Telll Me What Its Like to Be Big 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Remember what it was like to be little and wanting to be big! A time when everything would be better if only you were bigger. This heartwarming story is about a bunny named Willa who is very curious about growing up. She gets up very early one morning by herself and realizes she is too little to get breakfast on her own. Willa decides to wake up her brother, Willoughby, who agrees to help her. As he helps her with breakfast, she starts to question him about what it's like to be big. Willoughby patiently answers Willa's questions with older sibling wisdom. The painted illustrations make you feel warm and comfortable. The endpapers remind you of a cozy quilt. All of which remind you of home. Children K-3 will love this story for it's illustrations and the wonderment of what it's like to be older. Adults will love reading it for the nostalgic memories of wanting to be big and knowing what it's like when you finally get there.

Editorial Review:

Early one morning, Willa gets up and tries to make her own breakfast. But she's too small to reach anything. Luckily, her older brother, Willoughby, is there to help--and to tell her about the many things she'll be able to do all by herself once she's big.

A cozy companion to the bestselling Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep, this gentle and reassuring story about growing up is just right for every child--big or small.

A Boy Who Wants A Dog 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This story is about a boy, Edward Frost, who wants a dog to make the neighborhood bully, Martin Hastings, stop bugging him. When Edward's Uncle Josh comes with his dog Argess, Edward's dreams of having a dog start to come true. There is a big adventure at the end of the book. The ending is very exciting and I don't want to spoil it for you, so read this book!

A Real Good Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read this book nine times. Edward becomes attached to a collie dog brought to his house when his Uncle Josh comes for a summer visit. Edward thinks about the life of his Uncle, a hobo; about the bully, who makes him cry Uncle; and about his friend, who is an Uncle. The collie helps Edward become strong and thoughtful, and be better than Martin, the bully.

A follow-up book, The Bully of Barkham Street, is about Martin.

Editorial Review:

AS USUAL, THE Strega-Borgia family can’t seem to get a break. They’ve just welcomed a newborn boy into the world, but before they can give him a name, he’s snatched and replaced with a demon baby. Mrs. McLachlan is back, safe and sound—but so is Isagoth the demon, and he hasn’t forgotten what he wants from the Strega-Borgias.

The family’s got to be ready, because this will be the final battle, where the winner takes all. And they’re going to need all the help they can get. . . .
