Military families beware 1 out of 5 stars.

The book had a few clever bits of writing which might appeal to young readers, however the format made for very fragmented characters. It does not deserve the Sunshine State award. I also object to the paragraph written about Sam's father: "He died for nothing." The paragraph is only a few sentences and is really the only reflection of feeling from the characters when this major event happens. It is an abrupt explaination of a very complex situation and completely inappropriate for this reading level. If the author wanted to venture into the subject of US foreign policy then he should have either written it with less cruelty and more background information or written a book for a more mature reader. It is possible for our young students to understand the seriousness of war and the political areana that surrounds it, however, we must educate them with facts from all sides of the issue and encourage healthy debate. This cruel paragraph was clearly the author's simplistic hostility or at the very least a lazy author not able or willing to fully handle a sensitive and important subject.

Editorial Review:

Doing homework becomes a thing of the past!

Meet the D Squad, a foursome of fifth graders at the Grand Canyon School made up of a geek, a class clown, a teacher's pet, and a slacker. They are bound together by one very big secret: the homework machine. Because the machine, code-named Belch, is doing their homework for them, they start spending a lot of time together, attracting a lot of attention. And attention is exactly what you don't want when you are keeping a secret.

Before long, things start to get out of control, and Belch becomes much more powerful than they ever imagined. Now the kids are in a race against their own creation, and the loser could end up in jail...or worse!

My daughter, who was in 2nd grade, couldn't get into reading.
We found the series "Weird School" and she LOVED them. She read the
entire series. Now with this follow-up series "Weird School Daze" she
is thrilled to be able to keep reading!!

Mr Granite is from another Planet by Dan Gutman 5 out of 5 stars.

This series is so funny. It is about 2nd grade children and their days at school. Each book is about a different teacher. My grandson is 8 and laughs about something in each chapter. I love the books as much as he does and I am a Grandmother. I would recommend this book and the other ones in the series to every child since the book's main character are both boys and girls so funny for both genders. GREAT SERIES - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! We have read all 21 books in this series and they are all hilarious.

Editorial Review:

It's the start of a new school year, and A.J.'s third-grade teacher, Mr. Granite, is out of this world! He's a supergenius who talks weird, acts weird, and looks weird. He knows everything. Is he a computer posing as a person, or does he come from another planet?

continues the weird school tradition 4 out of 5 stars.

My 8 year old son loved this book. It is interesting in that it takes place away from the school, but still has most of the familiar characters. The reader gets a fun introduction to Mr. Granite, who makes an appearance in another book, later. If your child likes the weird school series, don't pass this one up!

CLASSIC!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Okay. I am not 13 years old, more like Jack Benny's 39. I have a brain tumor and I am very, VERY slow. But this book was GREAT.

The book is called "Mr. Sunny Is Funny" and it takes place at the beach near the ocean and there is a shark! This was a CLASSIC! Believe it or not, there were lots about Shakespeare --- even the real stuff! At the last chapter, it says "The Big Surprise End That Will Completely Shock You, Unless You Already Guessed It". Does this sound like George Kirgo? (He was an author, wrote books, movies, etc.) His book was called "How to Write Ten Different Best Sellers NOW in Your Spare Time -- and Become the First Author on Your Block, Unless There's an Author Already on Your Block, in Which Case You'll Become the Second Author on Your Block, and That's Okay, Too AND OTHER STORIES".

Thanks, George.

Editorial Review:

A.J.'s family rented a beach house for the summer, and you'll never guess in a million hundred years who rented the house next door. Well, you have to read the book to find out. So nah-nah-nah boo-boo on you!*

*Okay, okay, it's Andrea and her family. And she has a monster crush on Mr. Sunny, the hunky (but weird) lifeguard. Ooooh! When are they gonna get married?

It's the end of the school year, and Mrs. Daisy's class is going to "graduate" to third grade. A.J. and the class just found out that Ryan's mom, Mrs. Dole, is the new PTA president, and she has big plans for the celebration. Did you know you can Rent-A-Anything, even Blue Angels?!

MRS. DOLE IS OUT OF CONTROL is the first installment of the "My Weird School Daze" series, which follows the 21-book "My Weird School" series. The story is told from the point of view of A.J., a rambunctious boy who has a lot in common with Dennis the Menace.

The writing is on a young boy's level, but some parents may not appreciate the occasional name calling and A.J.'s attitude. A.J. isn't a great example of how to behave. On the other hand, a lot of A.J.'s perspective is typical of the average elementary-school boy. The best way to get someone interested in reading is to give them a book that speaks to them. Chances are, this book will relate to boys everywhere.

Editorial Review:

A.J. and the gang are graduating! But the out-of-control PTA president is turning the whole thing into a huge ceremony complete with fireworks, a petting zoo, and a flyover by the Blue Angels! Is moving up to third grade such a big deal? And what could possibly go wrong?

Mr. Klutz is Nuts 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you like to laugh, then you have to read Mr. Klutz is Nuts by Dan Gutman. It is a humorous fiction book. This story takes place at a school during the school year. A.J. is a lazy amd unmotivated student at school. He is always saying that school is a waste of time. Mr. Klutz is a wacky and crazy risk-taker. He is always doing dangerous stunts. A.J. doesn't want Mr. Klutz to get hurt. Throughout the school year, Mr. Klutz tries to get the students invloved and interested in school. In the book, A.J. tries to problem solve. He tries to stop Mr. Klutz from doing crazy things. Mr. Klutz climbed the flag pole one day and couldn't get down, so the school called the fire department. My favorite character was Mr. Klutz, because he is a very cool principal. He tries to get the students to enjoy school.

I cannot relate to the characters in the book, because they do very silly things in school. At my school, we take school more seriously. I've acted like Mr. Klutz before. I like to motivate the boys on my baseball team to do well. This is my text-to-self connection. Mr. Klutz motivated the kids to do well in school.

This book was so exciting. I loved it. I would not like to change anything in this book, because it was well written. I think any kid with a sense of humor would enjoy this book. I believe third and fourth graders would really enjoy reading this book.

Editorial Review:

Something weird is going on.

Principal Klutz was hanging upside down from the school flagpole! He kissed a pig on the lips! He painted his bald head orange! And now he wants to bungee jump off the roof of the school, dressed like Santa Claus!

I discovered Dan Gutman's Weird School series from tutoring a second grade boy who "hated reading." Not only did he like the books, I loved them!
Second graders are the crazy ones, and these books remind me of when I taught second grade. In fact, I think Dan Gutman must really be a second grader in disguise as a grown-up...

This book is really cool. 5 out of 5 stars.

I've read all of the Weird School books and enjoyed them. They are all funny. Dr Carbles is Losing his Marbles is a great book because it's really funny. I liked the parts involving a toupee (wig/fake hair). It gets yanked off of Dr. Carbles head in front of the students at recess and it's hysterical! I would reccomend this book.

I teach 2nd grade and have met Dan Gutman. I have read most of his books and loved them. The Weird School series has been a hit with my class this year. I have read each one orally to them and they beg for more. I pause at certain places in the stories because they know what lines come next. I'm going to begin the Weird School Daze next.

my grandson is an advid reader and likes silly titles and books. he had this book read in one day and asked if he could get more of the series. I told him I'd get them for him. he has a wicked sense of humor and to watch him read and giggle though a story is heartwarming.

Editorial Review:

A.J. thinks that nothing can possibly be as boring as a sleepover in the natural history museum. But anything can happen when Ms. Krup is in charge. The tour guide says that dinosaur skeletons come to life in the middle of the night. Is she right?

Ms. Hannah Is Bananas 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Hannah Is Bananas by Dan Gutman. This book is about AJ's teacher Ms. Hannah. The characters are AJ, Ryan, Mrs. Hannah, Ms. Daisy, and Andrea. Mrs. Hannah does not have a garbage can, because she never wastes anything. She puts it in a ball. For instance, AJ's friend, Ryan, blew his nose on a tissue and Ms Hannah took it and stuck it on a newspaper ball. It was nasty.
Dan Gut man grew up in New York and his birthday is on October 9, 1955. Dan Gutman wrote a lot of books like Miss Roopy Is Loopy and Miss Daisy Is Crazy. They were good books. I like this book because it is funny and mysterious. It was funny when AJ rode his skateboard and fell off.

Great for making kids get the habit of reading 4 out of 5 stars.

'Miss Holly Is Too Jolly' will leave readers ho-ho-ho-ing long into the night! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Miss Holly is one weird teacher. For one, she teaches languages in what is called a language lab, yet there are no mad scientists hanging about. Two, she's constantly wearing a bowl of fruit on her head and dancing around in a very strange, and embarrassing fashion. And three, she's decided to hang mistletoe about all over her classroom, which must mean that she wants all of the boys and girls to kiss. A.J. isn't having it. After all, there's no rule that says you have to kiss underneath the mistletoe, it's just there if you want to kiss someone underneath it. But Andrea refuses to take that into consideration, and, being a stickler for rules, feels that everyone must kiss underneath the mistletoe - even reluctant students. Luckily, when the class learns that there will be a Secret Santa present giveaway, thoughts about mistletoe go out the window, and suddenly everyone's scrambling to find the perfect gift for their Secret Santa, otherwise they'll be present-less on Secret Santa day. But when they discover that they also have to put on a holiday recital, the Weird School kids decide that Miss Holly is taking the holidays way too far, and acting much too jolly for her own good.

I have never read one of the books in the MY WEIRD SCHOOL series before. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Dan Gutman's holiday offering. MISS HOLLY IS TOO JOLLY! vaguely reminds me of THE BAILEY SCHOOL KIDS series, dredging up some crazy teachers to run amok, and leave the school virtually in the hands of a bunch of childish, immature, yet extremely likable, children. Miss Holly is an entertaining character who is sure to leave young readers laughing. Between her crazy antics, and kind nature, she provides the picture of a perfect teacher - aside from the fact that she has a tendency to teach her students very strange phrases in Spanish. The children, on the other hand (A.J., Andrea, Emily, Ryan, and Michael) are your typical students - making fun of one another, misbehaving, and laughing at the most inappropriate moments. Dan Gutman certainly knows kids, for he's written personalities for his characters that shine like the brightest star on the Christmas tree; that will leave readers ho-ho-ho-ing long into the night!
