Kiss Good Night (Sam Books)

As my grandson started wanting to be read to before bedtime. I found this book. He fell in love with Sam and has picked up the phrase" I'm waiting" when he wants a good night kiss. Also, Now all teddy bears are named Sam. I've told him he has to have his mommy take him to Sam's House now that he's started asking to go visit Sam & grandma is old and forgotten the way. He loves the book. He wants to play with sam.

Editorial Review:

"The finale is so satisfying that it calls for an encore. 'Again!' Sam says, as will readers of this cozy story." - CHILD magazine

It was a dark and stormy night on Plum Street. In the little white house, Mrs. Bear was putting Sam to bed.

Outside, the wind blows and the rain comes down. Inside, it is Sam's
bedtime. Mrs. Bear reads him a story, tucks him in, and brings him warm milk. "Are you ready now, Sam?" she asks. "I'm waiting," he says. What else does Sam need before he'll go to sleep? Could Mrs. Bear have forgotten a kiss? Now this NEW YORK TIMES best-selling story by two of the most beloved picture book creators is available in a board book edition suitable for the youngest listeners.

A joyful, feel-good book! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Little Sam Bear just can't fall asleep; the cough in his throat is keeping him awake. When the love and cuddling Mrs. Bear shares don't work, she knows Sam needs medicine. Not wanting to take the cough medicine, Sam tries everything to convince his mom that he does not need it. "I don't have a cough!" Sam cries. "Taste bad," he explains. It's only when Mrs. Bear explains to Sam that after taking the medicine, they can go downstairs and wait for snow. Excited and brave, Sam swallows the syrup. All warm from the hot tea and cuddling, Sam is fast asleep when if finally snows.
The short tale of a sick cub and his loving mama is a wonderful book for all young readers. The way in which the author describes the setting is very inviting. Sam's red blanket is cozy, and his mama's belly is soft and wiggly as they snuggle in the big, purple chair while it snows. The pleasant setting will make any reader feel warm inside. The illustrations support this warm feeling. The soft colors bring out the best in both Sam and Mama Bear. This is a joyful, feel-good book!

Editorial Review:

But the syrup tastes bad, and there’s too much of it on a too-big spoon, and it’s too hard to swallow. What will make Sam feel better? Acclaimed picture-book creators Amy Hest and Anita Jeram revisit Sam and Mrs. Bear as they share a quiet moment of comfort that is enough to conquer the coldest night.

We've read this book over and over and never tire of it 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book three years ago and my kids (4 yrs. and 7 yrs.) still love to read/hear it. I was surprised to see two reviewers describe the text as awkward and "strangely repetitive." The text is repetitive, but it's poetic and emphasizes certain concepts. Typically children like repetition of words and themes. Regarding a previous reviewer's comments about spending more time on the "you can do it" aspect, I'd argue that the part about mama bear and her little cub working together to bake and prepare the packages is as important to the story as the actual delivery. What's not to like about a mom spending time with her son and teaching him how to serve his neighbors? The text of this book is charming and the illustrations are beautiful. We own all three Sam books and regularly give them as gifts. I highly recommend the entire series.

Editorial Review:

A timeless tale of friendship by New York Times bestselling author Amy Hest.

Once there was a small dog with

crooked ears. He belonged to no one.

And once there was a wisp of a girl

named Lia. . . .

The dog who belonged to no one spent

his days quite alone. . . . He longed for a friend.

No one takes notice of a small dog with crooked ears who doesn’t have a home. He explores the narrow streets and wide boulevards every day, while across town a little girl named Lia pedals on her bicycle alone, delivering breads and cakes. Both dream of finding a friend, until fate brings them together.

With lyrical text by New York Times bestselling author Amy Hest and tender watercolors by illustrator Amy Bates, The Dog Who Belonged to No One introduces readers to two timeless characters who will touch hearts as they discover how they belong to each other.

Kiss Goodnight is my favorite book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who loves their children and loves reading should purchase this book. This book is so warm and loving that renting it from the library just won't due...we read it over and over and over again. A true classic.

Editorial Review:

Every child has his or her own personal repertoire of rationalizations for avoiding bed, and every parent has a stockpile of counter offensives. In Kiss Good Night, Mrs. Bear covers all the bases: "Hmmmm...Book, blanket, friends, milk...," but her son, Sam, isn't ready. "I'm waiting," he keeps saying. Could there be anything Mama Bear is forgetting? Amy Hest's sweet story, gorgeously illustrated by Anita Jeram in warm, earthy greens, golds, browns, and reds, provides a rhythm to the bedtime ritual that will soon have sleep-fighting tots relinquishing their day to night. The comforting manner of easygoing Mrs. Bear as she comes up against her son's quiet resistance--even while the wind blows and rain comes down outside--is an antidote to nighttime anxiety. A perfect read-aloud from Hest (In the Rain with Baby Duck) and Jeram (illustrator of Sam McBratney's bestselling Guess How Much I Love You). (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Another great Sam book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This series of books is wonderfully illustrated and each tells a simple story of Sam & his mother. Appropriate for the very young (my 14 month old loves them) and older children as well (a nod of approval from my 8 year old). My only concern is there is no father figure in the story line but they are told more to show a mother's love for her little bear/boy.

ADORABLE artwork; somewhat weak storyline... but still cute. Short & sweet. 4 out of 5 stars.

I LOVE the artwork in this book. The storyline is a little weak. I would have liked a little more descriptors about what's happening when Sam says "Again!" because it's awkward reading this part... just one word to the page. And I'm not crazy about the text on page 13. I just can't relate to the Mommy bear walking out and saying "kiss good night" in a mantra. But hey, that's just me. You get to decide for yourself because I've typed all the words out for you. I typed out the text because I'm going to read this to my daughter while I am away on business. (I picked this one because it was relatively short compared to her other books & quick to type!)

Kiss Good Night [text]
1. It was a dark and story night on Plum Street.
2. In the little white house Mrs. Bear was putting Sam to bed. "Ready now, Sam?" "Oh, no," said Sam. "I'm waiting."
3. Mrs. Bear sat on the bed beside Sam and they read his favorite book and they both knew all the words.
4. Afterward, Mrs. Bear pulled one side of the blanket way up high under Sam's chin, and the blanket was red. She pulled the other side, too, tucking it under his toes like a nest. Outside, the wind blew. Whoo, whoooo. "Ready now, Sam?" "Oh, no," said Sam. "I'm waiting."
5. Mrs. Bear arranged Sam's friends in the bed and they all snuggled close in the blanket that was red. Outside, the rain came down. Splat! On the roof. Splat! Splat! On the windows. The wind blew. Whoo, whoooo. "Ready now, Sam?" "Oh, no," said Sam. "I'm waiting."
6. Mrs. Bear poured milk in two glasses and they both drank milk and it was warm sliding down. Afterward, Mrs. Bear yawned. "You must be ready now," she said. But Sam shook his head. "I'm waiting," he said.
7. "Hmmmm," said Mrs. Bear, "let me think. We've read a book and made a nest, arranged your friends, and had warm milk. Sam," she said, "what did I forget?" "You know," said Sam.
8. "Hmmmm," said Mrs. Bear. "Book, blanket, friends, milk...Book, blanket, friends, milk..." Sam waited. He waited and waited.
9. And then, at last, Mrs. Bear said, "Oh, I know! Kiss good night, Sam!" And she bent way down, kissing Sam once and twice and then twice more.
10. "Again!" cried Sam.
11. And she bent way down kissing Sam once and twice and then twice more.
12. Outside, the wind blew and the rain came down.
13. In the little white house, Mrs. Bear was taking out the light, whispering, "Kiss good night, Sam... kiss good night..."
14. And Sam went to sleep. On a dark and stormy night on Plum Street.

This is an excellent story. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this because it was recommended by a book club I'm part of; it turned out to be a great investment. The story is written like music ~ there is a rhythm in it that is just really enjoyable. My son (4.5 y.o.) particularly loves the end -- "Tappitty-boom, tappitty-boom..." Although the underlying message (you're never too old to learn) is lost on him at his age, I have no doubt that eventually it will stick. For now, he usually just enjoys the beauty of the illustrations and the musical flow of the story's words.

Editorial Review:

George can't read. A hundred years old, and he never learned how. "That must be corrected," says George. George Baker and Harry don't seem the likeliest of friends. But sitting together waiting for the school bus in the morning, the hundred-year-old musician and the young schoolboy have plenty in common. They're both learning to read, and it's hard. What's easy is the warm friendship they share. In an inspired pairing, a best-selling author and illustrator pay quiet tribute to the power of language and intergenerational bonds.

A beautiful, touching story 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Even though it breaks her heart to be separated from her beloved grandmother, Jessie leaves her small town when she is offered a trip to America. She vividly describes the wonder of living in the new world and finding a new love. She works hard and uses her sewing skills to save toward purchasing a ticket for her grandmother.

This 1998 Kate Greenaway award winner uses lush paintings to portray a realistic setting of the story. The illustrations complement the story, but they are so beautiful that they almost overwhelm the story.

I enjoyed this beautiful story and its beautiful illustrations. Though at times heartbreaking, the story of Jessie and her trip across the sea to America is very inspirational.

Editorial Review:

"Hest simply and faithfully holds a mirror to the milestone event for millions of turn-of-the-century immigrants."— PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (starred review)

When a young girl from a poor eastern European village learns that she must leave her beloved grandmother for a new life - and a new love - in America, they both feel that their hearts will break. The sure and inspired narrative by award-winning author Amy Hest is paired with paintings by P.J. Lynch that glow with warmth and carefully observed detail, creating an unforgettable tribute to the immigrant experience.

A lesson about trying something NEW 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I first saw this story read on Reading Rainbow when I was a child, and was so intrigued (as much as a child can be intrigued) by it that I had to go to my local library right away to check it out! Even years later, I appreciate the lessons that this book has to offer ... teaching children and their parents that trying something NEW can be rewarding. Going against tradition and discovering new things is an adventure for Gabrielle in this beautifully illustrated tale.
I wouldn't recommend it for children younger than 6 years of age, because of its wordiness. But a young reader with a love for books would eat this right up!

Editorial Review:

Every year, in the fall, Gabrielle gets a new coat. And every year her coat looks the same -- navy blue with two rows of buttons and a half belt in the back. But this year Gabrielle wants something different -- a purple coat.

"Purple?" Mama laughs. But Gabrielle is quite serious.

Alone with Grampa in his cozy tailor shop, Gabrielle does some fast talking. Still, even Grampa is dubious. His solution makes The Purple Coat a very special book, just right for every child who has ever wanted to try something different.

perfect for a rainy day 5 out of 5 stars.

A great book for young children... beautiful illustrations, simple yet delightful story about a duck who dislikes the rain (until Grampa helps out). I've read it over and over again to my two preschoolers and they never tire of it (me neither!) Especially fun to read on rainy days.

One of my favorites 5 out of 5 stars.

My son received this book for his 2nd birthday, and loved it. And it's one of my all-time favorites, too. It captures very subtly and lovingly the complex relationships between toddlers and parents grandparents. I never tire of reading it to my son.

We sure got our money's worth! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Well, we FINALLY bought this book after my 2-year-old checked it out from the library week after week. Each time we returned it, she'd ask for "That Duck book" at bedtime. It has a delightful story & illustrations that allow pre-readers to "read" the story to you by just looking at the pictures. I suggest getting the hardcover because you'll read it so many times, that you'll want it to hold up for years.

Editorial Review:

It's a rainy day and Baby Duck hates rain. But Grampa Duck knows how to resolve the problem. So he goes up to the attic and comes back with a little umbrella and rubber boots.
