Wonderful Read 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I used to dislike books about talking animals. Kate DiCamillo has totally changed my opinion. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was such a touching story that I could absolutely not put it down. I read this one immediately after finishing Ann M. Martin's A Dog's Life and I think I must have gone through a whole box of Kleenex between the two books. The people that Edward meets as he is passed from one person to another are so well-defined. Even though he is with everyone a short time, the reader really connects with everyone and wondering when Edward will finally arrive "home."

I must admit that the ending was a little cliche. ***SPOILER ALERT****

The possibility of the little girl who lost Edward in the beginning stumbling across him with her own daughter is wonderful, but the probability just isn't there. Considering how far he traveled it is amazing they connected again and no stars were lost because as a children's story this was the ending that just had to be there.

Editorial Review:

Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: he was owned by a girl named Abilene, who adored him completely. And then, one day, he was lost. . . .

Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis. Along the way, we are shown a miracle -- that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again.

Amazing illustrations, awful story 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have so many issues with the text of this book. As a picture book it is lovely to look at and has a very satisfying aesthetic. As a story, it is so unfinished that it leaves me cold. I had the chance to ask the author, at a talk, what happens to the man and the monkey after the pageant. She said "nothing, who knows, why does it matter". I understand that in some of her other works, like Because of Winn-Dixie, the readers are older children at an age to deal with ambiguity and either make up their own end, or move on. Explain to a 5 year old why the man and the monkey live on the street, explain why they have no home, tell your child why the indigent have no where to go after the pageant and while warm for now, the man and monkey will go back out to the cold after and sleep in the snow.

I am not saying picture books must be easy, trite and tied in big bows at the end...leaving things unresolved or open to interpretation is fine but it seems like a lot to bring up in so short a space, with no denouement or even brilliant enough verbage to justify the imperfections

Again, the illustrations are ethereal and dreamy. Very beautiful.

Just don't read it aloud, or read it at all.

Editorial Review:

In her first picture book, America’s beloved storyteller Kate DiCamillo
reunites with Bagram Ibatoulline to offer readers an unforgettable holiday gift.

It is just before Christmas when an organ grinder and monkey appear on
the street corner outside Frances’s apartment. Frances can see them from
her window and, sometimes, when it’s quiet, she can hear their music. In fact, Frances can’t stop thinking about them, especially after she sees the man and his monkey sleeping outside on the cold street at midnight. When the day of the Christmas pageant arrives, and it’s Frances’s turn to
speak, everyone waits silently. But all Frances can think about is the organ grinder’s sad eyes — until, just in time, she finds the perfect words to
share. Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo pairs once again with acclaimed
artist Bagram Ibatoulline as she presents a timeless story of compassion
and joy.

Editorial Review:

In celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s two hundredth birthday comes this breathtakingly illustrated picture book about the president and his two youngest sons. Tad and Willie Lincoln were mischievous pranksters who treated the White House as their personal playground. They tormented nearly everyone they encountered—except their doting father. Even when they demanded a full presidential pardon for their soldier doll, he was happy to oblige. For him, the boys were a welcome distraction from the looming Civil War. Based on true events, Mr. Lincoln’s Boys reveals a playful side of one of history’s greatest presidents.

A Lovely Book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I bought multiple copies of this book for neices, nephews, godchildren and young cousins. It's a great antidote to the overly commerecialized Christmas season. The writing is elegant but straightforward, and the illustrations glow. Although it has a strong spiritual message, it is not overtly regligous, so is suitable for all children who celebrate Christmas.

A poignant holiday story benefits from Bagram Ibatouline's warm and lovely drawings. 5 out of 5 stars.

A long time ago a poor girl named Claire learns to knit by her mother's side - and knits her Christmas dreams into the wool. An order for six stockings could save her holiday; but on the way she meets a boy even poorer than herself: how can she share her dreams of warmth? A poignant holiday story benefits from Bagram Ibatouline's warm and lovely drawings.

First Christmas Stocking- great new Christmas book. 5 out of 5 stars.

I am always looking for good books with lessons or messages- this is one of those books. The idea of giving is always a good idea. It has many words on the page making it more enjoyable as a read aloud or for older children. It is definitely one of our "read at Christmas time" each year books! Hope you'll give it a try.

Grieving for her dead mother, a poor girl finds all her dreams fulfilled when, on Christmas Eve, she hangs above her hearth a stocking she has knitted.

I thought that this was an excellant book! It was sort of like a mix of several stories, put together in a unique way. I especially like the part when the "Worthy Knight" (or was it the knight?) came riding out onto the battlefield and...

A reimagining of Cinderella that departs from the original in some interesting ways.

When Bella is born, her mother dies. Her father, a cruel and unpleasant knight, can't bear to look at Bella and sends her to a wet nurse. He abandons her there for many years, until he remarries.

Bella is raised by peasants to be good and hardworking and her closest childhood friend is Prince Julian, who is fostered with the same wet nurse.

When Bella is finally summoned to her father's house, she finds out that the loving family who raised her are not related to her. Her new stepmother doesn't want her around and her father has not mellowed over the years.

When Bella finds out that the life of Prince Julian is in danger, she sets out to save him, and to avert a war if she can. I loved Bella because she doesn't sit around waiting to be rescued--she rescues herself and many others along the way.

Hooray for girl power!

Editorial Review:

Bella has grown up thinking that she was just a simple peasant girl. But suddenly, Bella's world collapses. First, her best friend, Julian, betrays her. Then she finds out that she is, in fact, Isabel, the daughter of a knight who abandoned her in infancy. And now he wants her back. Bella is torn from her beloved foster family and tries to accept her new life with her deranged father and his resentful wife. But when she finds out about a terrible plot that threatens the kingdom, she sets out on a journey that will lead her to a destiny far greater than she could have imagined.

ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO comes to life more than your usual elementary-level biography. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Russell Freedman's THE ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO covers all the controversies surrounding the legendary explorer who claimed to have seen rocks burn and met bandits who could conjure up sandstorms. Marco's vivid, often fantastical descriptions of his travels shook Europe: was he a courageous adventurer, or a fake with a vivid imagination? In exploring the rumors surrounding Marco Polo, ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO comes to life more than your usual elementary-level biography.

Editorial Review:

He claimed to have seen rocks burn, bandits command sandstorms, lions tamed with a look, and sorcerers charm sharks while divers gathered pearls on the ocean floor. Marco Polo shook Europe with descriptions of the world he'd seen on his epic journey to the court of Kublai Khan. But was Marco Polo the world's most accomplished explorer? Had he really seen the "Roof of the World" in Central Asia, and the "City of Heaven" in far-off China? Or was he a charlatan who saw nothing more than the conjurings of his inventive mind? Join Russell Freedman as he tackles a centuries-old mystery.

Editorial Review:

It's one of childhood's most time-honored pursuits: counting cars while waiting at a train crossing. Celebrated poet Philip Booth has captured its appeal and unmistakable cadence with precision and wit, backed by the vibrant, nostalgic illustrations of Moscow-trained first-timer Bagram Ibatoulline.

The poem "Crossing" first appeared in Booth's 1957 debut collection, Letters from a Distant Land, so parents and grandparents might have an easier time than kids recognizing some of these freight carriers: "B&M boxcar, / boxcar again, / Frisco gondola, / eight-nine-ten, /Erie and Wabash, Seaboard, U.P., / Pennsy tankcar, twenty-two, three." But the rhythms remain the same, and even if the automobiles stopped at the crossing look like they hail from Havana, kids still won't be able to keep from counting the tankers and boxcars on this old-time steam engine.

Booth still lives in his childhood home, and he's clearly hung onto that wide-eyed perspective in his fast, loose language. Lucky for us it's been preserved and revived--and even enriched, thanks to Ibatoulline--in this sweet and well-executed adaptation. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

Editorial Review:

Drawing on a true story, an award-winning author and illustrator present a picture-book tribute to the beauty and mystery of the ocean, and to the mesmerizing creatures that may frolic there.

It came from the sea, from the lonely sea,
It came from the glittering sea.

In a small Massachusetts fishing village in August of 1817, dozens of citizens claimed to have seen an enormous sea serpent swimming off the coast. Terrified at first, the people of Gloucester eventually became quite accustomed to their new neighbor. Adventure seekers came from miles around to study the serpent and aggressively hunt it down, but the creature eluded capture. The Gloucester sea serpent was then, and remains now, a complete mystery.

Reviving the rhythms and tone of a traditional sea chanty, M.T. Anderson recounts this exhilarating sea adventure through the eyes of a little boy who secretly hopes for the serpent's survival. The author's captivating verse is paired with Bagram Ibatoulline's luminous paintings, created in the spirit of nineteenth-century New England maritime artists.

Hana in the Time of the absent parent 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I loved Hana because I sympathize with her. My Dad is obsessed with his job and never seems to have enough time for me. I even asked him to read this book and he told me he was too busy. This story may be about tulips but it could be about any parent I know. Dr Phil should feature this book on his show. I just want to thank my teacher Ms Miller for giving me this great book to read.

Editorial Review:

With stunning artwork reminiscent of Rembrandt, this tender tale harks back to the days of tulip fever to illuminate the enduring love between father and child.

Hana and her father used to love to walk in the garden in the evening and play their favorite game — the one where Hana is a Renowned Physician and Papa pretends to faint dead away on the bench. But ever since tulip fever struck Holland, Hana's father has been consumed by greed. Soon he is too busy to walk in the garden or kiss Hana good night or even realize how lovely the tulips are. Even worse, the tulip market is crashing, and now Papa is falling into despair. It's up to Hana — with a little help from the painter Rembrandt, a family friend — to find a way to remind her father of what's truly valuable and bring him back to his family. Luxurious illustrations by virtuoso painter Bagram Ibatoulline bring seventeenth-century Holland to life in this poignant portrait of the persistence of love.
