I absolutely love this book. It was a quick read, it was interesting, and it was fun! Maguire left it open-ended, and it enables you to imagine your own result, or to hope for a second book! I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good twisted fairy tale!

Editorial Review:

From the author of the best-selling WICKED, a transporting tale-within-a-tale about the strange world of skibbereen — aka tooth fairies — and the universal need to believe.

A terrible storm is raging, and ten-year-old Dinah is huddled by candlelight with her brother, sister, and cousin Gage, who is telling a very unusual tale. It’s the story of What-the-Dickens, a newly hatched orphan creature who finds he has an attraction to teeth, a crush on a cat named McCavity, and a penchant for getting into trouble. One day he happens upon a feisty girl skibberee who is working as an Agent of Change — trading coins for teeth — and learns that there is a dutiful tribe of skibbereen (call them tooth fairies) to which he hopes to belong. As his tale of discovery unfolds, however, both What-the- Dickens and Dinah come to see that the world is both richer and less sure than they ever imagined.

To Be Swallowed 4 out of 5 stars.

What is it with this guy? I'll tell you something, he found a niche and is really working it. It's a good thing he works it well!!

Gregory Maguire (author of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister and Wicked, among many others) turns well-known fairy tales on their heel (or hoof, paw, sticky digit...whatever) in Leaping Beauty, and Other Animal Fairy Tales. This book, recommended for youth 8-12 but really enjoyable for all, tells us the untold stories of characters like Goldiefox and the Three Chicks, So What and the Seven Giraffes, and Leaping Beauty herself. There are 8 stories in all, and certainly best enjoyed read aloud.

Though Maguire tones down his acerbic wit for the young crowd, these stories leave plenty of opportunities for uncomfortable conversation with your child. For instance, they may ask you, "Exactly what is a hot toddy?" or "Why would the bad guy make someone wear concrete boots?". Then again, the actual fairy tales from Brothers Grimm were pretty controversial in their own way, too. It's all just good fun, though, and a great way to show kids that every story has two (or more!) sides.

Editorial Review:

Who better to wreak havoc with eight beloved fairytales than Gregory Maguire, the brilliantly funny author of the adult novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, as well as of the hilarious middle–grade series, The Hamlet Chronicles.

Zany animals of all species run through these fractured tales with alarming speed and dexterity. Who would have thought that Sleeping Beauty, that most regal of all fairy– tales, could be twisted into the story of a frog with a most unusual and promising dance career? Get ready to meet a gorilla queen and a psycho chimp, seven giant giraffes; and one very bad walrus.

Pasha and Lisette ask Baba Yaga to help destroy Blood Prince 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This wonderful novel written by Gregory Miguire is sure to enchant. The basic idea is for Pasha and Lisette, two village kids, to destroy the Blood Prince as it reeks havoc in nearby villages and on trains. This story is magical, but some people may not enjoy all of the dialogue. I really like the characters because you get to know the story behind them. I also think it is good that the author made it a girl and boy team. Pasha is a very brave boy ,yet he knows he can't do too much thanks to his short tempered grandfather. Lisette always thinks about her mother even though she has to be the one in her house who cooks, cleans, and takes care of her baby brother while her father does his best to earn money for his family. I really enjoyed the story. I know if you read it you'll like it too.

Editorial Review:

Once every generation or so, a great wolf called the Blood Prince, who not only devours bodies but also steals souls, stalks the northern forests of Russia. Rumor has it that he has set his sights on the forgettable little village of Miersk. The wolf"s evil runs so deep that past survivors refuse to believe in him, and so it is up to the newest generation, two children named Pasha and Lisette, to save the village. But how can a young boy and girl stop such a beast? This mesmerizing tale draws on Russian folk stories about Vasilissa the Beautiful, Baba Yaga, and the Firebird and is filled with quirky details and memorable characters that could spring only from the imagination of Gregory Maguire. This new edition includes a prologue and is illustrated with striking cut-paper silhouettes.

Truely Wonderful!! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This edition of Baum's "Marvellous Land of Oz", "Ozma of Oz" and "The Emerald City of OZ" is great for those reader's only familiar with Baum's first Oz novel. The book is well compiled with the original illustrations by John R. Neill.

The introduction by Gregory Maguire (author of "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West) is informative and it is really interesting to read why and how these three texts interest an author whose biggest selling book is a novel based on these children's books.

This edition also includes a brief biography of Baum, suggestions for further reading and a reading group guide.

This is a marvellous edition!!!

Editorial Review:

For more than a century, L. Frank Baum’s kingdom of Oz and its delightful denizens have enchanted readers of all ages. In this illustrated Modern Library edition, the bestselling novelist and children’s book writer Gregory Maguire takes readers on a guided tour of Oz, gathering and introducing us to three of Baum’s beloved stories:
The Marvelous Land of Oz, the sequel to The Wizard of Oz, is the adventure-packed tale of a Gillikin boy named Tip who flees Old Mombi the witch in search of the Emerald City.
Ozma of Oz, set mainly in the strange land of Ev, features the clever and beautiful new ruler of the Emerald City, as well as Dorothy of Kansas, the mechanical marvel Tik-Tok, and the dreaded Nome King.
The Emerald City of Oz recounts Dorothy’s trip to Oz with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, and the Nome King’s terrible plot against the kingdom.

Really Really Nice Book! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I really loved this book from the moment I laid eyes on it ... The Oasis is so real that it could be any old motel off the side of the road. Each character has an important part to play in the story, from the poetic Ms. Fernald to the secretive Uncle Wolfgang. Hand, the boy in the book, is trying to get the truth of how his father died, and trying to accept his mother after 3 years of never knowing where she was or how she was. This definitly counts as one of my favorite books. The author has a terrific mind for making everything come together into a nice circle, everyone playing a part, everyone making a difference.

Very Gregory Maguire 4 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for my 12 year old daughter. Together we had read WICKED and Son Of a Witch by Gregory Maguire so I knew she enjoyed his literature. I was looking for a book she could read to complete a required book report at school. I found Oasis. While she said it started out a bit slower than she had anticipated when it did pick up she was mesmerized. She enjoyed it very much and found it to have strong characters with interesting lives, just as the books we had read together. Oasis was an easier read, great for her age group. She found the mix of mystery and fantasy entertaining. She received and A on her book report and highly recommended it to her peers.

The Adventures of the Spiders 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed reading this book because it was interesting and it was weird in a way because the spiders had fallen in love with humans but in a way the spiders were mad because the humans had killed their siblings. The spiders wanted revenge but didn't want to hurt the humans because they had fallen deeply in love of them. Besides that, the book was good it kept on getting better each time I read it.The book was good and I know why because reading is not my thing and I read the whole book without getting bored.

Bedlam, and one of the funniest, creepiest, ickiest middle-grade Halloween books ever written! `Demon spiders, lover spiders, greedy spiders, sensitive spiders—they all go on heroic quests that get entangled in classroom rivalries and local soap operas. . . . Everything is part of the comic brew, from the nightly news and Spidergate to Dracula, The Wizard of Oz, Charlotte's Web and Little Miss Muffet.'—BL. `A fast, delightfully entertaining romp.'—K.

A lively story with many unpredictable twists and turns 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Kids seeking light humor and fun will find this a whimsical story of a different kind of newcomer to class: one Thud Tweed and three genetically altered eggs. Add drama and a cover-up of intent and you have a lively story with many unpredictable twists and turns.

Editorial Review:

Trouble is brewing in Hamlet, Vermont, when a new kid named Thud Tweed enrolls in Miss Earth's class. He's an oversize lug with a bad attitude that soon starts affecting his classmates—especially after he tinkers with the outcome of the spring egg hunt and pits the rival Copycats and Tattletales against their own members. When three genetically manipulated eggs appear on the scene and begin to hatch, the children begin spinning lies to keep them a secret. Soon they are caught in their own web, and they realize that they must all join together—even Thud—if they want to find a way to right their wrongs. With themes ranging from the ethics of gene splicing and nature-versus-nurture to bullying and parenting, this fifth installment of the Hamlet Chronicles explores dark territory. At the same time, it introduces outrageous new characters and sparkles with Gregory Maguire's patented tongue-in-cheek humor and hilarious one-liners.

Six Haunted Hairdos: A hair raising tale 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The book I reviewed is called Six Haunted Hairdos. This book was written by Gregory Maguire. Six Haunted Hairdos is a fictional book, and it is sort of a mystery, but at the same time it is an adventure.
A group of girls and a group of boys are always trying to outdo each other. When the girls cook up a wonderful plan to scare the boys, things start getting out of hand. Thelka Mustard, the empress of the girls club, who call themselves the Tattletales, tells the boys that six beauticians were recently killed on a nature trip. Though none of this is true, the boys are not sure whether they should believe this story or not.
Meanwhile, the boys who call their club (...), are having ghost troubles of their own, without Thelka Mustard trying to scare them with her crazy ghost story. Sammy Grubb, who is the emperor (...), thinks that they all saw a baby elephant, though this was no ordinary elephant, it was ghost.
The Tattletales are planning to scare the boys in their "Six Haunted Hairdos" costumes. Thelka leads the boys into the woods so that the "ghost beauticians" can do their jobs. The plan works out great and the boys got scared. Now the boys are even more sure that the baby elephant was a ghost. You should read this book to find out what happens with the ghost elephant and the "Six Haunted Hairdos".
This book's strengths are that it has good details and it is very compelling. It is a good book. The book's weakness is that at times, it can be a little bit confusing.
I think the author Gregory Maguire is a good author who knows how to use details. He writes good books. I would recommend this book to any reader who likes suspenseful, mysterious, and spooky books. If you enjoyed reading this book, then you should read the rest of the book series!

Editorial Review:

A sequel to Seven Spiders Spinning, with fake ghosts of hairdressers and real ghosts of mastodons.

Editorial Review:

Writing for children is serious work. Thankfully, there are writers up to the task. In these essays, which originated as Children's Literature New England talks, "notable writers for children consider how literature, memory, and moral passion serve the writer." Gillian Cross (The Great American Elephant Chase) uses the story of Jack and the Beanstalk to explore the import--for author, reader, and sometimes protagonist--of entering a fictional world. Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) illuminates a current running through his books having to do with survival. "How do children survive under the best conditions with loving parents," he wonders, "or worse, with unloving parents--how do kids make out?" Susan Cooper (The Grey King) explores our motives for reading, as children and as adults. "More often than not," she determines, "[the child] is on a voyage of discovery, seeking out new worlds. Not us; we tend to look for the familiar." And Pat O'Shea (The Hounds of the Morrigan) tells us what children get from books. "As children read," she says, "they learn about the dangers of the world, but ultimately in a safe and strengthening way, a way that tells them that weak and vulnerable as they may be... they and their own lives are of value, have importance, that they make a difference to the world and to the life around them." Other contributors include Ursula K. Le Guin, Gregory Maguire, Sarah Ellis, and Madeleine L'Engle. --Jane Steinberg

Editorial Review:

On the night before Christmas, something is flying over Hamlet, Vermont, but it isn't a sleigh with reindeer. It's a UFO bearing five aliens on a mission: to free this planet from its evil dictator, a fat man in a red suit and a long white beard. Disguised as Earthlings--well, elves--they meet Mayor Grass, fresh from his annual appearance in Santa Claus costume, and capture him. It's up to Miss Earth's students, the Tattletales (all the girls except Pearl) and the Copycats (all the boys), to set aside their differences and concoct a rescue scheme. In this Yuletide sequel to Seven Spiders Spinning and Six Haunted Hairdos, visitors from the Planet Fixipuddle join the familiar folks of Hamlet--Miss Earth, Grandma Earth, and the rival Tattletales and Copycats--in a comic extravaganza that is literally out of this world.
