Stink is as happy as a pig in slop. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Stink is as happy as a pig in slop. He and his friends, Webster and Sophie, are on a class field trip at the science museum --- and the exhibit is called "Gross-Me-Out: The Wonderful World of Smelly Stuff." Stink starts with the giant nose, where he gets to gawk at enormous nose hairs and learn how boogers are made. He loves it!

But when Stink's teacher, Mrs. D., dares him to experience the "Everybody Stinks" exhibit, he has to summon up his courage. After all, no one else will even go near it. One whiff of the B.O. scent almost does him in, but he recovers long enough to sniff more smelly odors, including dirt, rotten eggs, skunk scent and perfume. It appears that Stink has a real talent for smelling. He can smell better than anyone else in his class. In addition, he learns tons of smelly facts.

At lunch, the kids read flyers about a stinky sneaker contest the museum is putting on. Naturally, Stink must enter. Others are interested as well, so he'll have plenty of competition.

At home, Stink demonstrates The Nose and even impresses his big sister, Judy Moody. Stink is confident that his Nose will make him famous someday. When he researches the science of smelling, he finds information about the corpse flower, the world's stinkiest blossom, rumored to smell worse than outhouses, dead elephants and rotten fish.

Stink is inspired to create some terribly stinky perfume and sets up a Franken-stink lab. He and Sophie work up a recipe (including toilet water, dead-flower water, pickle juice and more), but he's distracted when Sophie tells him she's planning to compete in the stinky sneaker contest. Stink is determined to win.

He's positive that his reeking old sneakers have a great chance to win the competition. But his plan is foiled when Judy deodorizes them with sweetly fragrant powder. What is he going to do? He can't pour anything (like his stinky perfume) in them since the rules say the shoes must stink from being worn. Can his entry be saved?

In a startling turn of events, Stink saves the day when misfortune strikes the contest. He also gets to meet a professional smeller who has actually sniffed a corpse flower. It all makes for a happy (or at least smelly) ending.

This is another enjoyable book in the Stink series, sure to appeal to young readers (especially to boys who are enthralled with the grosser aspects of life). As always, author Megan McDonald manages to tickle readers' funny bones, slip in a little subtle education and tell a good story.

"Stink is a delightful protagonist, and McDonald cleverly imparts information on smells. . . . A funny book for almost any collection." — SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL

Soon Stink is engrossed in toilet water, corpse flowers, and all things smelly. But is his fetid footwear foul enough to win a Golden Clothespin Award? Loyal fans will be holding their breath for Stink’s latest outrageous solo adventure.

The many fans of Judy Moody and Stink will adore joining the Moody clan for the holidays 5 out of 5 stars.

Christmas is zooming up on the Moodys' calendar. Stink is glued to the Weather Channel hoping to get good snow news. When he meets the new mailman, Mr. Frost, Stink is told to call him Jack, as in "Jack Frost." Jack Frost has a big white beard and a round tummy. He also has a great sense of humor (he tells Stink that if a dog bites him, he'll get "frost bite"). Stink immediately puts two and two together and pleads for Jack Frost to deliver snow since that is all he cares about this Christmas --- even as Stink's sister Judy informs him that it never rains in Virginia, so he's out of luck.

But Jack Frost claims he might be able to arrange a snowstorm. He seems to know quite a lot about weather and reminisces about a huge snowstorm in 1980. This gives Stink hope, although Judy teases him unmercifully when he tells her that Jack Frost is their new mailman and might help them get snow.

Meanwhile, Judy is busy composing her T.P. (totally presents) list, which she actually writes on toilet paper. Her list is very long, but when she tells Stink to write his, he prints out one word: "SNOW." Later, when Judy informs her mom about her class's Hawaiian Christmas party, Stink tells how his class made a snowflake field guide and learned about the famous snowflake photographer named Snowflake Bentley. At the school play, the parrot in Judy's class makes everyone laugh by belting out "Mary Had a Little Lamb" in Spanish, while Stink stuns the audience (and his teacher) by not appearing as the "Night Before Christmas" mouse, but as a blinding white snowflake.

On Christmas Eve, the Moody house is a scene of wild gift-wrapping and pizza eating. The doorbell rings, and Jack Frost appears with a package. But Stink answers the door, and so he is the only one to see him. The package is addressed to them but has no return address. When Judy and Stink tear it open, they find a pair of mittens for each of them. Stink is intrigued by the mystery, while Judy thinks it's silly.

Judy returns to decorating the entire house in a Hawaiian holiday motif with pink flamingo lights, a blow-up palm tree and paper surfboards, while Stink stares longingly out the window, hoping and wishing for snow clouds. He bets Judy that it will snow by midnight; whoever loses has to eat the terrible fruitcake that Grandma Lou makes and sends to the family. The two siblings determine that they will stay up until midnight to see who wins the bet.

They try everything in order to stay awake: sips of coffee (blech!), loud Christmas carol CDs, reading out loud every book about snow the family owns, and playing card games. Their mom and dad even let them crawl into their sleeping bags in the living room. Unfortunately Stink falls asleep. Judy manages to stay awake until she hears something completely unexpected.

THE HOLLY JOLIDAY is another fun book in this series, with an additional enjoyable smidge of holiday magic and wonder. The many fans of Judy Moody and Stink will adore joining the Moody clan for the holidays and will root for Stink's Christmas wish to come true.

Judy Moody is making a list and checking it twice, but all her brother, Stink, wants this year is snow. It hasn’t snowed on Christmas in Virginia in more than a hundred years, however, so what are the chances that that will change? Enter the new mailman, Mr. Jack Frost, who not only looks like a jolly old elf but also seems to know a lot about weather patterns, has a fondness for the cold, and works looooooong hours during the holiday season. Plus it’s the best time of the year, when strange packages and lots of surprises are swirling around, so isn’t it possible that Stink might get his wish? Fans who curl up with this new Moody comedy can be sure that their bellies will shake like a bowlful of jelly.

Harry Potter yes, but this is a great series to interest children in reading more at a younger level and with more variety. Back to the old days of a lead female character, a great inspiration for girls. Especially "tweens."

"Like big sister Judy, Stink sports a talent for self-expression. . . . The quick-witted dialogue will keep readers entertained." — BOOKLIST

When Stink buys a huge jawbreaker that doesn’t break his jaw, he writes to the manufacturer — and receives 21,280 jawbreakers for his trouble! Soon he’s so obsessed with getting free stuff that he misses an envelope in the mail pile, until his best friend starts looking as mad as a hornet. Thirty-six idioms are sprinkled through the story, inspiring a search that’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Shrink, shrank, shrunk!

Every morning, Judy Moody measures Stink, and it's always the same: three feet, eight inches tall. Then, one day, the ruler reads - can it be? - three feet, seven and three quarters inches! Is Stink shrinking?

In Stink's first solo adventure, his style comes through loud and strong - enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the book. These very funny, homespun sagas reflect the familiar voice of a kid who pictures himself with super powers to deal with the travails of everyday life - including the occasional teasing of a bossy big sister!

My third grader just LOVES Judy Moody. These books really got her back into the habit of reading.

Entertaining and educational! 5 out of 5 stars.

Beautifully done pen and ink drawings set the mood for this light read with a serious story.

Judy Moody meets a girl whose name also rhymes, and also shares her dedication to offbeat interests. With Judy suddenly feeling that she's lost her identity -- she's no longer one-of-a-kind -- we all wonder if Judy will make this girl her nemisis, or become her pal!

Young readers will read Judy Moody: Around the World in 8 1/2 Days over and over again. Kudos once again to Megan McDonald for a great read!

Editorial Review:

"A humorous peek at the world through the eyes of a precocious third grader. . . . This entertaining journey will have easy-chapter-book readers lining up for the trip." — SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL

Judy Moody cannot believe her ears. There at the lunch table, a girl called Amy Namey is interviewing Judy’s best friends. Even worse, Amy is dressed like Nellie Bly, daredevil woman reporter. Is this girl with the rhyming name destined to be Judy Moody’s new best enemy —- or new best friend? Judy finds some unexpected potholes on the path to friendship as Class 3T takes a tour of the globe, exploring everything from tooth-brushing sticks in Yemen to an Italian "spider dance" along the way. Fans will cheer as Judy masters the challenge of making new friends and keeping the old, for sure and absolute POSITIVO!

My 8 year old daughter devours the Judy Moody and Stink books. Megan MacDonald cannot write them fast enough. These are excellent readers for those who are reading independently but may be hindered by smaller typeface. The books read quickly ( good for kids bad for moms who have to wait for the next book to come out). My daughter also thinks the books are hysterical. I always catch her laughing out loud in her room. Mrs. MacDonald has captured the attention of the younger reader with exciting and humorous text that kids can identify with while maintaining the the innocence of this age group! Two thumbs up! Highly reccomended.

My 9-year-old daughter couldn't put this down. She loves all the books in this series, and said this one was as good as all of the others. You won't be sorry with this one.

Editorial Review:

It's her funniest adventure yet! A few sessions with a college-age math tutor turn Judy into a jargon-spouting polygon princess. Crucial!

Judy Moody is in a mood. Not a good mood. And definitely NOT a math mood. The substitute teacher in Class 3T thinks Judy's math skills need improving. So Judy has to start meeting with a math tutor. Does this mean flash cards? Does this mean baby games? Does this mean school on weekends? But when Judy meets her tutor — a sick-awesome college student with an uber-funky sense of style — and gets a glimpse of college life, Judy's bad math-i-tude turns into a radical glad-i-tude. Pretty soon, Judy's not only acing her math class; she's owning it. Time to say good-bye to Judy Moody, old skool third-grader, and say hello to Miss College! Small-tall upside-down backward non-fat capp with extra whip, anyone?

Compassionate and Considerate 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Author Megan McDonald and illustrator Robert Hunt have created a memorable character in Julie Albright, a considerate, passionate young girl who is ready to make changes and take changes as they come.

Julie is one of the American Girls, books which offer realistic glimpses into America's past through the eyes of young girls. The Julie books begin in 1974, when Julie is nine years old, and end in 1976. There are six Julie books in all.

The first book, Meet Julie, begins shortly after her parents get divorced. Julie moves to another part of San Francisco with her older sister Tracy and her artsy mom, who opens up a shop called Gladrags below their apartment. Although Julie gets to see her father (and her rabbit Nutmeg, and her best friend Ivy) every other weekend at her old house, things just aren't the same.

By the end of the first book, Julie is a little more confident and a little more content. Though still sad about the divorce, she settles nicely into a pattern with her parents, and she enjoys her new home and her school.

Throughout the course of the series, Julie grows more optimistic and thoughtful. In the second book, Julie Tells Her Story, she is assigned a "Story of My Life" project in class and conducts tape-recorded interviews with her family and friends. Happy New Year, Julie shows how she always finds things to celebrate and appreciate, while Julie and the Eagles finds Julie raising awareness and money for injured feathered friends. Julie's Journey follows her on the wagon train that celebrated America's bicentennial. The sixth and final book in the series, Changes for Julie, considers communication and politics when Julie befriends a hearing-impaired classmate and runs for student body president.

Now I'm happily picturing a grown-up Julie working in politics or education, and wishing there were more books in this delightful series. Like the other American Girls books, each of the Julie books includes vignettes explaining and depicting real-life events that happened in that girl's time period. The vignettes in the Julie books were written and compiled by historians and writers such as Susan McAliley and Nika Korniyenko. With Julie's books taking place in our recent past, parents can easily bring up their own childhoods while discussing these books with their kids.

Editorial Review:

The perfect way to learn about Julie Albright is with a complete set of her six books in an attractive slipcase. Set includes "Meet Julie"; "Julie Tells her Story"; "Happy New Year, Julie"; "Julie and the Eagles"; "Julie's Journey"; and "Changes for Julie".
