This book is outstanding! It is the best book I have ever read. I like it because it is gross and very funny! I give it five stars.

After two or three of these books, the plot becomes dull and loses its humor. Also, I would not recommend these for children learning to read and write as they are filled with misspellings (picher for picture and shurely for surely). I don't quite get why this is supposed to be funny, but it's confusing and ultimately detrimental for my 8 year old.

Finally, parents take note: Pilkey has created a lucrative business based on potty humor and his inability to draw above a 3rd grade level. This is the junk food of the children's book industry. Many young children will find these books funny, but just as we don't allow our kids to eat candy and chips all day, these books should be limited.

For an elementary-school-aged child, these books are great. My son needs no prompting to read them.

There's a bit of 'potty talk' in there, but I find them hilarious!

Captain Underpants Wipes Out the Competition 5 out of 5 stars.

My son, Jacob (age 7.5) has just finished reading Vol. 8, "Captain Underpants and the Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People" to me out loud. It is the latest and last (so far) in the Captain Underpants series. The author and illustrator, Dav Pilkey, is an awesome talent. All the C.U. books contain sci-fi adventure built for children and are filled with super power juice, hypno-rings, time travel, alternate universes, evil teachers and principals, grandparents, robots and so on. They are also filled with humor (most of it, despite the titles, in exceedingly good taste) that appeals to the kids as well as to their parents (mean teacher Miss Anthrope), albeit perhaps at different levels. I laughed out loud consistently as my son read these to me. The dialog is snappy and cute, as are the illustrations and the books within books (comics drawn by the main characters, Harold and George complete with little kid illustrations and misspellings) that punctuate all the entries in the series.

A reasonable reading skill level (2 grade and above) is required for these and they are definitely better read BY children than TO children but are as enjoyable to adults as to their kids. These are great. Highly recommended.

ESP. with thanksgiving coming up... a good book to read with young ones to emphasise the imprtance of doing our part to protect the animals and realize that thanksgiving can be about family and love and being thankfull to be alive rather than a dead bird on the table.

At first my seven year-old son, a devout Captain Underpants fan, was doubtful as to whether or not to get this book. He saw the so-so ratings on Amazon and didn't think he was going to enjoy it. But upon purchasing a used version of the book, he found he loved all the activities included.

Inside he found stickers, crossword puzzles, word finds, jokes, a comic: "The Bride of Harry Potty," and step-by-step instructions on how to draw the Captain Underpants characters. It runs about 96 pages, but it's chock full of fun.

Now, don't buy this expecting another Captain Underpants adventure; it's an activity book. If your child is looking for something to ease the wait for the next Captain Underpants book, give this a try.

Move over, Captain Underpants! There's a tiny new superhero in town. Undaunted by Principal Krupp's insistence that their essay assignment on good citizenship not be another comic book about the briefs-clad warrior, fourth graders George and Harold decide to invent a new superhero. Super Diaper Baby is born! It's up to our fearless infant hero to save the planet from diabolical Deputy Doo-Doo and his reluctantly evil pooch, Danger Dog ("I'm not really evil. I'm just in it for the kibbles."). Several robotic battles, intergalactic digressions, and "flip-o-ramas" later, Super Diaper Baby has done his duty, and George and Harold are in trouble yet again with their principal. Still, it was worth it, as any fan of Dav Pilkey's lowbrow, scatologically inclined "epic novels" (The Adventures of Captain Underpants, Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman, etc.) will attest. My 7yr old son borrowed the first book in this series from the school library and it was the first book he had borrowed that he read all of it and loved it. So I then wanted to hunt them down for him as he is not an avid reader and these books really grabbed his attention. I highly recommend them for any young reader who can just read chapter books as this will boost there reading and interest. My son absolutely loves this author and I wanted to get some books he and his younger sister could enjoy together. They love this series! My son even took them to school and his teacher read the entire series to the class, all the kids loved it. Some potty humor, yes, but irreverent and innocent as well!

My son is an expert on good children's books. He is now 8 years old and has been listening and/or reading children's books all his life. His sister, too and she is 12. If he likes them - you should read them, too. Since my daughter also likes this book - you should buy an extra copy for a niece or nephew, too!
